I just downloaded the new Mac version (146398) and it fails; prev versions worked fine (and I really miss not having Evernote)

I'd first try this to make sure the binary application isn't corrupted:

Quit Evernote from the elephant icon in the menu bar (if it's running)

Drag the Evernote application to the Trash

Download and install a clean new version: http://www.evernote.com/about/download/

... and maybe even reboot your Mac to be sure.
