(Archived) Can't forward email to account or save Web page

Michael Hyatt

Idea

The Evernote site is painfully slow this morning. Perhaps my issue is related to it.

I have tried several times to forward email messages to my Evernote account. I have double-checked the email address. I am using the correct one, as specified in my account. This feature is indispensable to me, and one I use all the time.

In addition, I can't save Web pages to my account. I am using the Chrome extension and have done this successfully scores of times in the past.

That's certainly your choice.

Good luck.

Are you not lost without access to your data? It says you would be in your sig...

Anyway, whilst it would be nice to be able to rely on just one service it's clear that there are some times when it fails to work as expected. It seems sensible to look for alternatives that can support each other in times of difficulty - after all if Evernote did disappear for a while would you continue to merrily send all your data to it without considering the potential difficulties that might ensue if you are unable to access the data later?

Evernote's a great service, I use it frequently, but to be totally reliant on it could be a bad thing for my business. I need a plan B - that's what most of use considering other opportunities are doing even if it appears that we are moaning...

It's late, time for bed. Hopefully it'll be back to normal in the morning.

perspective?

You don't have access to new clips and emails to your Evernote account for a few hours - as I understand it no data has been lost.

This is such a storm in a teacup.

Good luck with all the other apps that you are all going to rush off and use, I'm sure they are all completely bug-free, up 100% of the time and the CEO also emails you personally to ask you how your cat is doing each morning.

2:45 PT and still no emails (sent at 9:25 PT) arriving for me. Anyone have anything make its way through.

No- nothing getting through for me (2:55 PST) over the last 15 minutes, goes to show how much we 'users' have grown to rely and need Evernote as a service when there is a blip in the works.....

We've been investigating this problem all day, and we think that we've narrowed this down to an intermittent issue on one of the routes that people can use to hit Evernote's servers.

If you see this problem, could you please run the "traceroute http://www.evernote.com" command (it's "tracert http://www.evernote.com" on Windows) and post your results? We're suspicious about connections that include "internap.te1-3.ar1.snv2.gblx.net", which seems to be used in (e.g.) routes from Comcast.

Absolutely. But today's problem is relative. I still have access to over 31,000 of my notes on my desktop. The problem is the ~200 that I've either not received today (that were sent directly to my EN account) or synced from one computer to another. Cramped my style but didn't make things come to a screeching halt.

Evernote's a great service, I use it frequently, but to be totally reliant on it could be a bad thing for my business. I need a plan B - that's what most of use considering other opportunities are doing even if it appears that we are moaning....

I don't use it "frequently"...I use it A LOT...at least once per every computer hour I'm on the computer (minimum 8-10 hours per most days) & probably more. Like I said above, I also have Plan B's...Critical information is not stored solely in EN. Doesn't mean I'm ready to bag EN entirely b/c of today's problems. EN is still my "go to" app for saving, "clouding" & retrieving information.

Hopefully it'll be back to normal in the morning.

Indeed.

I really can't understand why people are so willing to throw their toys out of the pram over a couple of hours of reduced service. If you want 100% reliability and uptime then I suggest you print off all the web pages you need and keep your notes in a nice A4 pad.

That's a really helpful comment?

What's wrong with considering the options available? Some would say that its sensible to have a back-up plan so you can recover from a disaster such as finding your data is failing to reach your account as expected. Being able to respond to such disasters quickly will mean that those with a plan B will still be here when those without have gone to the wall.

None of my emails from this morning have been delivered to my client as yet.

On the other hand, my other notes are syncing. What I did at work has been synced to my home machine.

I too am having the same problem - it's been all day. Man I wish they could warn us a bit better because it certainly does put into perspective that things CAN HAPPEN to your notes. Funny syncing all day.

Problem is this is the exact kind of problem that made me freak out a few years ago. Thinking the problem was on MY end I tried everything to fix it, and in the end I just ended up deleting the notes some how some way........and sadly could never retrieve them. That REALLY sucked.

So here i am again in the SAME situation patiently waiting for a fix? Everybody else still having problems?

I'm getting this message when I try to sync: SYNCHRONIZATION FAILED Evernote is unable to connect with the Evernote Service. This may be due to a network problem or service maintenance. Please try again later. If enabled, automatic synchronization will resume once the Service becomes available.

Dam & I just went Premium 2 days ago.... :)

24 hours after first reporting this, I am getting mixed results. Sometimes Evenote will sync; sometimes not. A moment ago, I tried to upload a Web clip. The sync failed three times (or at least said it did). Then, five minutes later, three copies of the clip appeared in Evernote.

I think this is progress, but we aren't out of the woods yet. You never know how dependent you are on a tool until it suddenly stops working!

I've seen a status update that indicates they've added extra resources to help overcome the issues of syncing.

Like you I am still missing e-mails that I sent yesterday - about 24 hours ago - but have received e-mails that were sent later. Not sure if that means the others will turn up eventually or whether I should write them off, and resend them.

I think this is progress, but we aren't out of the woods yet. You never know how dependent you are on a tool until it suddenly stops working!

And it always seems to happen when you need to use the service: a bit like when you think you're going to be late arriving for a meeting but the traffic appears to be slow, or the train takes a long time at each station. It's not the end of the world, it just feels like it - or as someone once said, "It's not a matter of life and death, it's more important than that."

Update: after posting this I couldn't access Evernote at all - not via desktop, browser or Terminal. Bother! Reminds me a bit of the problems Twitter had as it became more popular.

Link to comment

Thanks for the link.

Interestingly, just after the brief period of being unable to access Evernote, my desktop client updated and shows one of the missing e-mails - the first one. So there's hope the others will turn up.

And as I typed this I got another synchronisation failure message... And can't synchronise from my iPad :-( Ho hum! I'm off to the cinema to watch The Tourist.

I'll check back later.

All my missing notes have FINALLY APPEARED YES! Looks like they are back up for now.......and yes i will echo what he said.......YOU DON'T KNOW HOW BAD YOU NEED SOMETHING TILL IT'S GONE!!!

I guess we also know that many people use the option to email directly to our accounts! ;)

Yes, I've noticed the message board being veeeeeeery slow as well as not receiving my incoming emails. I checked the server status page & there was nothing since 12/22/10. I've submitted a support inquiry. That took about 5 minutes, too, b/c of the slowness.

I'm not sure if that will help bring this to their attention (just in case their other measures haven't already) b/c I've yet to receive the auto reply email with the ticket number. So that may even be affected... :)

Link to comment

Its the same here, thats why I ended up at this thread .. my emailed notes are simply not getting through (yet) after 10 minutes or more.

In fact asking for a preview of this note is taking ages too, so I guess something serious is happening at Evernote

I noticed this rather earlier - probably because being in the UK we're a little a head of you in the time zones :-) I've raised two tickets with Support.

I've also noticed problems with syncing in general as my Mac database is not sync'd properly with the web version.

I've backed up my Evernote database on the main computer here, and I'm looking at ways to import the data into another database app as I'm not convinced that the Evernote servers are a safe place for the data at the moment :-( I've suspended use of Evernote here because of the syncing problems. I'll now be scanning my documents into Yojimbo so I can keep the workflow going.

I pulled this off the Evernote Status page

http://status.evernote.com/

Jan 3, 2011 (9:51 am PT)

Mail delivery delays

The server which handles both incoming and outgoing email for Evernote accounts experienced an unexpected increase in volume early this morning. Due to a misconfiguration, it didn’t automatically expand its delivery capacity to handle the load, which led to a backlog in email delivery.

We’ve fixed the configuration problem, and the server is now catching up on the older queued messages. The undelivered emails should be processed within the next two hours, and then email delivery should return to normal.

Thanks for the update...I was ready to hunt down one of those people in Europe who has the Evernote Batphone number. :)

I never did get a ticket number for my support inquiry, so it seemed like that wasn't a reliable way to contact them, today.

Evernote ran into a similar problem a while ago. So they set up some advance warning alerts in Europe. The website was mentioned in the forum, so I copied it to my Evernote for future reference.

I hope that eventually the Evernote Knowledgebase will have this sort of information.

It is now 1:25 p.m. CST in the U.S. Evernote is still not working for me. I can't email to it or clip a Web page. This make it almost useless to me. I also submitted a support ticket and haven't received any acknowledgment. This is very frustrating.

Also, I checked the box that said “Notify me when a reply is posted.” However, I have not received a single reply since I started this thread. Unfortunately, Evernote has become an integral part of my workflow, so I am way less productive today.

Yeah, I'm still having problems sync'ing notes UP. The other computer (same network) doesn't get a sync error, since it's only sync'ing DOWN. I finally got an auto email reply with support ticket number & emailed them back about this. Also, still don't have any notes that were emailed to my Evernote account, early this morning. But we still haven't hit the two hour estimate posted in the server status, yet, either. Still about 20 minutes away.

Backup plans are always good. I certainly have my share of them. But based upon your comment...

I'm still looking to move to Yojimbo - less reliant on someone else for the storage and accessibility of the data, and it syncs with the iPad.

...it would appear you are ready to jump ship. As I said above, certainly your choice. But either it's an idle threat or else it would appear, yes, you are ready to move to another app. (shrug)

I just had one Web clipping show up from early this morning.

While I am waiting, I am researching moving over to SpringPad.

This is the second Evernote downtime in about a year - if you think any other web service will be more reliable then good luck to you. Even now you can still email and clip, when the Evernote servers catch up all your data will be there.

I really can't understand why people are so willing to throw their toys out of the pram over a couple of hours of reduced service. If you want 100% reliability and uptime then I suggest you print off all the web pages you need and keep your notes in a nice A4 pad.

You're missing the point. I have been a loyal Evernote user for more than two years. The issue is not that the service is down. This happens with every service, as you point out. The problem is that Evernote is not communicating to their customers.

Looks a neat idea. Thanks for the link.

Not sure it will be able to replace Evernote for the way I use it though. There seems to be a limit on the size of e-mails and attachments you can send in. I saw nothing that suggested there was a monthly limit though!

LOL & agree! Probably a good idea to enclose it in a thick plastic bag, too.

They have responded...not sure what else one can expect. I'd much rather they spend their time getting everything fixed than spending a bunch of time hand holding. As long as I know they are aware of the problem & are working on it, I'm good. Yah, it's cramped my style this morning. But style cramping is just part of every day life.

Having been in those situations (where something crucial has gone down & a bunch of people are annoyed/angry/homicidal) , I'm pretty sure the EN office is pretty frantic at this time, lunches skipped, etc, trying to get things fixed.

They are communicating. Here is the 2nd formal posting today:

    Sporadic networking interruptions
We’re also investigating reports of slow downloads and synchronizations from some users. We believe that there are some sporadic networking interruptions that may delay some network connections and slow some transfers. (We believe that this was the proximate cause of the earlier mail delivery backlog.)

Given that this started for me over eight hours ago I anticipate that the solution is going to be some time in arriving.

I'm still looking to move to Yojimbo - less reliant on someone else for the storage and accessibility of the data, and it syncs with the iPad.

I've recently received this from Evernote's support team:

That's certainly your choice.

Good luck.
