Saferoom - A serious issue: "Encrypted" and "Decrypted" folders are gone after Evernote reinstall

Recommended Posts

Good day.

I trusted my most sensitive information to Saferoom encryption service. Saferoom creates two notebooks in Evernote: "encrypted" and "decrypted".
I had to reinstall Evernote on my Mac (10.14.6) yesterday.

For my dismay, after reopening Evernote both "enc/dec" notebooks were gone.
I contacted Evernote support and they informed me that the notebooks were not in their servers and suggested me to track them manually.

I have a backup of Evernote files (User files, Library, Application Support etc.) but now I don't know what to do to restore Saferoom's notebooks.

It's a serious bug. What's the point of using Saferoom if the information is stored locally?

What should I do to solve this problem?

Thanks

As you found out, Local Notebooks are not uploaded / backed up by Evernote.
Users must implement their own backup/restore process

Saferoom is a tool to encrypt your data.
Using a Local Notebook ensures unencypted data is not uploaded to the Evernote servers.
After encryption, it's your choice of notebook to store the notes.  I wouldn't use a Local Notebook

Did you backup the Evernote database folder?
On my Mac, my database folder is ~/Library/Group Containers/Q79WDW8YH9.com.evernote.Evernote/CoreNote/accounts/www.evernote.com

I'd recommend talking to Saferoom Support for starters - they should be able to tell you what to look for at least... or where to look in your backups...

Yes. Everything inside "Users" folder.

Is it possible to use these files to restore the notebooks?

Best,

Yes, the Local Notebooks are stored within your database backup

Run sync to make sure your online notes are uploaded
Log out of Evernote and close the app
Restore the database folder - this will restore the Local Notebooks

Start the Evernote app and log in
The sync process will run to bring your online notes up to date

It worked! The notebooks are back.
For future reference: trying to delete and restore the entire "Q79WDW8YH9..." folder didn't work.
I just copy-pasted and replaced the files, following the rest of the above mentioned instructions.

Thanks for the attention.

Glad it worked out for you

Kudos for having backups of your database.

The actual database folder is Q79WDW8YH9.../nnnnnnn  where nnnnnnn is a unique number assigned to each userid

As posted above, these are local notebooks; not uploaded to the servers or backed up by Evernote

They were designed for the temporary storage of notes during the encrypt/decrypt process

Do you have a data backup you can use for recovery?
