Note conflicts in iOS

Recommended Posts

Does the iOS app no longer support conflicting edits in notes?

I often have examples where I've edited a note on iOS but then closed my phone before the changes were saved to the server, then I forget the note is edited on iOS and I go and edit the same note on my Mac, which gets saved to the server. Next time I open up Evernote on iOS I notice the unsaved changes are marked as not synced to server, they get uploaded to the server, and then immediately overwritten with the version I had previously saved from my Mac. The changes to the note from the iOS app are lost (but can be found in the Evernote Premium note history).

Previously this would have caused a edit conflict to be marked either in the note, or the note moved to notebook of conflicting edits. However, now note conflicts just seem to get silently "resolved" by having the changes in the iOS note replaced by the server version.

At the very least I would expect that we should get a notification that this has happened even if there is no way of resolving the conflict (other than checking the Evernote Premium note history: which is not ideal if you don't have Premium), but I've never seen such a notification in recent years.

I have this same issue.  I continually lose notes made in iOS when I don't manually sync.  It is absolutely ridiculous and a show stopper.  I am switching to OneNote (which I hate but does not do this).

You will "switch back" to Evernote in no time, trust me. Why don't you just raise a support case with Evernote support to help you with this? Evernote and OneNote are completely different things. Just look at the difference in the UI between Evernote and OneNote. I considered the switch too - as OneNote is free and Evernote is a paid service (I am on Premium for many years and will remain an Evernote subscriber). BTW I use Android and not Apple, but do reach out to Evernote support. :-)

Not lost anything up to date in iOS / other clients Mac and Win10.

Are you on regular release or on any beta (OS or app) ?

Evernote support were useless:

Thank you for contacting Evernote Customer Support. My name is Skylar and I'll be happy to help you today.

I understand that you would like to know about conflicting notes on iOS.

Ideally we should prevent the note from being edited on Mac but if the iOS app is inactive then the note is not detected as being edited. That should provoke a conflicting modification if the note is detected being edited at the same time thought. Best thing for them to do is to make sure the changes are synced, and to close Evernote on iOS before editing on Mac. We don’t know yet and while I can't make any guarantees that this will be implemented how it will change but hopefully this type of conflicts should not happen.

I hope this information was helpful and solved the issue. If you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Skylar K.

I have never lost an entire note in Evernote. However, note content of a given note that was not synced to the server from iOS will always be lost if that same note has been more recently edited on another device and that edit was synced to the server prior to the iOS app connecting to the server to submit its edits. In this situation there should be a note edit conflict notification of some sort. This used to exist, but it doesn't currently exist: this is the latest regular release of the iOS app and has been a problem for some time now...

I just tested on my iPad and Mac

The IOS changes sync'd to the server and wiped out the Mac changes

The bottom of the note shows1174558401_ScreenShot2019-09-06at07_41_53.png.0f783ada9fa966b3f97705148acd5b64.png
with the lost version listed below

edit: I see a problem.  The Conflicting shows on my Mac, not on iPad

Subsequent iPad modifications wiples out the Conflict notification

That's what used to happen, but it's not happening to me now... the iOS changes were just lost.

OK, just tried that now and can recreate your experience. It's possible the problem only occurs under certain circumstances, e.g. when a long time has passed and Evernote app has reloaded on the iOS device... or it's a bug that only occurs if you don't have Evernote Premium and so don't have offline notes on iOS?

Offline will sync as well, and to my observation is never used when you have a data link to the EN server.

It is only good for working with your local copies whenever there is no data connection. I use it for example during train rides, when the internet connection is going on and off permanently. Then I can work in a stable environment by cutting off the data links (WiFi and mobile) to EN.

This avoids most of the syncing trouble for me - of course I always sync after before I change clients.
