why can't we paste an image?

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have a feeling we are in a web 2.0 era for many years now, so why is it such a problem for evernote web client to handle basic operation like paste an image? Taken by windows snipping tool for example? I have to save it as file, browse for it and insert it. That takes long time.

Hi.  Which web client are you dealing with?  There's currently an old version,  a newer one,  and a brand new Beta.  The thing is being updated,  so you should see some changes this year...

I am not sure how can I see the version, but my URL is https://www.evernote.com/Home.action?login=true

Anyway does it work in any of the versions or these feature is yet to come?

Don't think the beta has a copy/ paste option yet.  Actually I was sure that one of the versions did,  but after a quick test it appears that none do as yet.  Like you,  I tend to use the 'save to desktop' option and upload it from there.

I tried the beta and the classic web versions (not the old old version). I found that if I copied an image from a web site or using the Evernote screen clipper, I could paste into a note  in both versions. But if, from Explorer, I right click on an image and select "Copy", that will not paste in either version. Using the ClipSpy clipboard utility, I can see that the clipboard contents are different in kind. The copy from File Explorer doesn't appear to have the image bits; it uses a reference to the original file. Copying from a web site or via an Evernote screen clip does have the image bits on the clipboard.

Jefito really? What about windows snipping tool? Please try that.

By copying image from file explorer you mean click on a file icon and copy? I wouldn't expect this to copy an image ...

How about copying between notes in Evernote?  I never had a special need to make the process as efficient as it could be,  but right-clicking a web image (in Windows) gives me a drop-down that includes "Clipper > clip image to Evernote".  If you get that image into a note,  could you then copy/ paste between notes?  Since it's not possible to select multiple notes in (some?) web client versions,  merging is not possible,  but note links or title and tag keywords could be used to keep the content together.

yes it is possible to right click - copy some image already in evernote web note and right click - paste into another note.

So at least you have an easy way to clip images into separate notes,  even if there may be a need to tidy up afterwards...

This works fine. I use it fairly often. Just checked again, to make sure: it worked.

I would. That works fine in, say, MS Word, and also the Evernote Windows application.

Thanks for sharing. I use the installed client on my Mac - it is no problem either to drag and drop a picture into a note, or to right-click, copy and then paste.

Even better (because it has more options and lets you tailor the note it will create) is using WebClipper, if you want to get more content.

We are talking about web client here. The app is better of course, but it's not always available if you are on a different PC for example.

Isn't this thread solved? I can drag and drop into a web note,  and download image easily from a web note...  (it depends on which version of the web app you're using,  of course...) - but what exactly is missing now?

My flow is next, press printscreen, it launches lightshot, I am select the screen I want and press ctrl + c. After this I can insert the image with ctrl+v in some programms, f.e. in skype or in slack, or in ms word, however it is impossible to paste it with ctrl+v into evernote. I found this feature, to create paste screen whenever I want with just ctrl+c, ctrl+v, extra comfortable, and think it would a great improvement to implement it in evernote as well.

Hi.  It sounds like Lightshot presents its image in a format that Evernote doesn't recognise.  I've used several other browser add-in screen shot apps which do work with Evernote,  so it's not a bug of some sort- it's probably a glitch with Windows clipboard.  You may find that pasting into Word (or any other receptive app) and then copy and pasting from there will give you the image.  -And if these images are from other applications or web pages,  Evernote has some built-in clipper / screenshot tools of its own...

@gazumped  You can download an image from a note in the web client? As an image? How?

When I right-click on an image in a note using the Web app it only gives me an option to save as an HTML or MHTM file.

Since I can't use the installed program (can't install it on my work laptop and wouldn't want all my Evernote data saved on my work laptop anyway) for long period of time, I need to use the Web Client.

My inability to just download a file is forcing me to use other methods to capture images into the cloud for downloading later and is causing me to re-think my continued use of Evernote after 11 years of use. I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious, which your post seems to indicate I am, but I just can't figure out how to do it.

Okay, looks like I can drag an image from a note in the Web client to my desktop or a directory open in File Explorer. Not ideal, but workable.

That's the workaround I've been using on the desktop version as well. EN need to realise that it is just as important to be able to easily get stuff out of EN as to capture it in the first place.

It's not true. When I tried to paste a image from the Snipping Tool (from Microsoft) to Evernote Web Classical and New version, doesn't work either. I tried Lightshot (a software installed on PC, not a browser add-in*) too before that and still doesn't work. Probaly Evernote Web Classical and New dosen't know how to handle these images. When I copy a image from a web source I could paste on Evernote web, but when I need to take a screenshot from anything using these tools doesn't work on Evernote Web.

*a browser add-in is not usefull for me because I need to screenshot things on my desktop and other systems on my PC

If you're trying to paste the content of a web page with multiple images I found a lucky two workarounds that fix the missing pasted images.

Now are they actually stored in Evernote or are they just links to the original page? I don't know.  If that original page goes offline will I lose the images?

1 - Quickest fix:

They may seem to be missing but as soon as you save and reopen the note the images are there!

2 - What I found by accident:

  1. Copy and paste the web page contents including the images. Yes they'll be missing, and you'll just see a broken image link icon and the name of the linked file.
  2. From the same source web page save just one of the images to the computer.
  3. Drag the saved image to the end of your Evernote Web note, and hey presto the other images magically appear!
  4. You can now remove this duplicate image.

UPDATE:  I just checked the img links in the page, and they're definitely stored in Evernote  😀

Sometimes, sometimes not.

Older clients sometimes had bugs, too.

I'm not sure whether that depends on the source. I tried various sources, and copy/paste, drag/drop. It also freaks me out that it's not easy to see whether pictures are in the note or just references to the original page, other than clicking on each picture and see whether it can be annotated.

Currently on

web v 10.13.4 web 249
Editor: v123.0.15939
Service: v1.34.4

I'm attaching Test2.enex (pictures somehow are just links) and Test3.enex (pictures are embedded), both created today with the web version, copy/pasting and drag/dropping images, Test2 from the Wikipedia main page, Test3 from this forum.

Test2.enex

Test3.enex

I did raise a support ticket now.

Note that sometimes other clients may have done that as well; I think it was the Windows client. Sorry if I don't know more exactly; I first encountered the problem a couple of years back when offline and facing several "broken" images. I reported it, to support and in this forum, but that didn't really lead anywhere.

Other people may have encountered the problem in the context of "... cannot annotate an image....". Obviously, these images may be lost when the original source ceases to exist, but they cannot be annotated, are not indexed, don't turn up in thumbnails, etc.

Note that embeded images can be found in the search syntax with the "resource:image/*" search syntax; these "referenced" images not, at least not as far as I know.

Note that in the ENEX file these images turn up as "<img .... src="http.....>". Check your exported ENEX files; you may be surprised how many you find.

Yes, would be a fan of this functionality. But what I've done as a workaround is paste it into gmail and then email it in to my evernote email address. Realize that's not ideal if you're combining text and pictures. But it's helped me.

In the past, I have been able to copy and paste screenshots into evernote.  Since the last upgrade, I cannot copy and paste screenshots to evernote.  Why is this an issue now and when will it be fixed?

Hi. I don't think anyone else thought it was an issue... see comments above.

I have reported the problem several times over the years to support. As mentioned above, again with the new web client.  After being handed through several people I was assured the problem was relevant and had been discussed by the team etc. Thereupon, I guess the problem was closed since I got an invitation to rate the quality of support.

While waiting that a solution to finally address the issue, I can assure the problem still exists in the latest version still exists in the latest web client. Two additional points

  • While the classic windows version reports the number of images in a note in the status bar and in the note info, that information does not appear in the V10 web version. (I don't know for the Windows version, since  will wait some more before using it). You get only:

image.png.c3c0121790a1b3d765985b2d9f166d64.png

  • An interesting issue is that, besides showing the pictures as if they were part of the note, the web client even gives you an option to rename them. However, nothing happens, as the image is not in the note.

image.png.c2ff1f2242b5e729e2c94d580f7344fb.png

In my legacy version, the images are not reported as part the note, and looking at the note size, indeed they are not. I'm wondering whether I should go again through the trouble to report it....

First I can copy & paste or drag & drop images into a note in the web client without a problem. Sometimes it takes a few seconds to import, which is shown by a spinning wheel.

Second when I rename it, it gets a new file name. When I save the picture from the note, the new file name sticks. So the rename function for attachments have a use.

3rd I usually don’t stick that much pictures into a single note that I would need a counter. If I want to have all pictures nice & neat, I put a table into the note, and insert each of the pictures into a table cell. This automatically resizes the pictures (without changing the original) and places them in a sequence.

Good for you. I can and it looks OK, but the images are not part of the note itself. Therefore, I can't rename, either, although the menu shows. I like tables, too, but first I want to make sure I have the image in the note.

I had the problem on Windows with Edge Chromium. What are you using?

Mac/Safari

When I add an image, it keeps the file name it had before it was imported. The rename does in fact assign another file name to the embedded picture.

When you save the picture from EN, this new file name will be used.

That may be the explanation, and is how it should work.

It may be a challenge to get drag/drop/copy/paste to work on all  browsers and platforms.

Thanks!

Funny - maybe it is because I live in 2022, not 2020.

When I pick a picture from my desktop and drop it on a note in the EN web client (Safari, Mac), it says it is importing it, and that it does. Tried with JPG and PNG picture, no problem, The pictures display after the import as part of the note. With an SVG vector graphic it did not work - EN can not render SVG, so fair enough.

Another thing that works - as the web client has improved in general a lot compared to older versions.
