Commenting and track changes

rockky

Idea

My deepest darkest wish has always been for Note comments, Displayed as and with UI similar to Facebook....interactive for anyone sharing the notebook. As with the image depicted! !

Would allow for interaction, but more importantly would allow for expansion of the Notes content, additional thoughts on a clipped web site, additional urls , images etc....serving functionally as nested notes

Hi,

We use Evernote Business for document management and Google Docs for commenting and track-changes. Because switching back and forth is not efficient we want to switch to Evernote completely. Google Docs has great commenting and track-changes features. Evernote doesn't. Is there a work-a-round?

When can we expect a decent commenting and track-changes feature within Evernote. I think it's time. People are asking for it for years now.

I know there are already posts about this but I just cannot believe that this is not a core functionality. This is basically what keeps me moving from Google Drive to Evernote. The ability to comment on shared Documents is absolutely key to collaboration. And please don't tell me that this is not the core of Evernote. Give me a break, what is it then? The ability to be able to write something down which then is saved on a server? I coded stuff like that myself 10 years ago... :)

Would love to hear an update on whether this is in the pipeline or whether I can just delete my Evernote account and stick with Google Drive for good.

Thanks

For me, the core of Evernote is a digital filing cabinet; the storage, organization and retrieval of my data

Just as a point of experience; Evernote staff don't usually comment on future features until they're pretty well into the pipeline (e.g., available in a beta or release). So I wouldn't expect an answer, though it's OK to ask, and you never know. But that's been a pretty rare occurrence since I've been coming around...

On the other hand, there's nothing to stop you and your cohort from adding comments to a shared note, marked by your initials or other identifying name; maybe with highlighting. It's not great, but it might work well enough if converting your notes to Google Drive is onerous.

Rather than "comment like FaceBook" I would rather have more of a "Tracked Changes" feature similar to Office Suite of products. WIth the ability to see everyone's collaborative changes exactly where they want them with the ability to accept or reject them as the note owner.

It would be more constructive to start a new topic as a feature request
This will allow users to vote and indicate priority to Evernote

If you're not already, you should be using the voting control up at the top left of the topic header, rather than inserting a "+1" post (particularly if that's the only content you're posting).

There's no specific commenting feature.
If I  needed this, I could add a comment section1794086854_ScreenShot2018-09-11at08_49_31.png.d50a79144ba5a0698e30d6d226db3ee3.png

@mrstevevietnam

Thank you for sharing!

I'm actually going to move this the general feedback/feature request section as this type of feature addition would most likely be implemented across multiple platforms instead of a singular platform like Mac.

Please continue to add suggestions/feedback regarding commenting here!

Yes there are lots of workarounds which all take extra time and slow down the collaborative process unfortunately... and once you start working with evernote tables it is very difficult to export your work as the formatting messes up...

and then there is the matter of timestamping of the comments, whether or not they've been read etc...

with rivals such as Notejoy out now that do seamless collaboration I think it's time for Evernote to pick up its game as they are losing the edge they once had...

Hi.  I don't recall seeing any requests for document management features or version tracking here before,  but maybe I missed them.  If this suggestion gets a large number of votes,  it'll maybe move up (or onto) the agenda,  but until now I wouldn't think it had crossed their mind.  The problem is that (as we've discussed elsewhere) Evernote is some help with lots of things,  but it doesn't specialise in anything - apart from storing and finding.  I use dozens of external apps like Lightroom / FreePlane / MS Office because they're more focused on different tasks - just as you use Google.  I wouldn't want Evernote to include any higher levels of expertise in any area - because it just means extending the menu system with many more levels of options and settings all of which have to be backed up with tons of code that has to be written and tested.

On the potentially positive side,  Evernote are improving their Editor - maybe this is an area they'll develop further.

You are right, it was not a frequent runner in the forum yet.

IMHO for the business environment the feature is needed.

Out of practical reasons when a team works on the same document base. But out of compliance necessities as well.

I agree that commenting and improved annotation are desirable (the beta web app allows different colour highlighting - good; but the Windows desktop still doesn't!!!)

For commenting in the desktop app I find code blocks (SH-CTRL-L) useful. I add comments after a paragraph. Code block is not ideal but it adds formatting automatically that differentiates it from main text.

Marginal comments, or pop-out comments would be be better.

Is there a need to explain why commenting is useful or is it obvious? (I think it is obvious, but evernote may not think so!).

Late to the party here, but I would love to have this feature! I use Evernote in lieu of a paper lab notebook and need it to have at least equivalent functionality. Lab notebooks are written in ink to prevent data manipulation. Therefore, if I record an idea or observation in a lab notebook and later find a mistake, instead of modifying it or tearing it out, I scrawl in the corner of the page, "Update: This is wrong! See p. XX for correction," thus preserving the original data (and its timestamp) while also avoiding misleading other researchers who come across the bad note. A comment feature in Evernote would serve a similar purpose.

I've been looking around for help to see if there's such a function to add a comment in a note for specific terms, if only hoping that I haven't figured out the method yet. I've been juggling between two apps as I really use this function a lot for my lecture notes.
