"EvernoteSpotlight quit unexpectedly" repeatedly

Recommended Posts

The pop-up displays "EvernoteSpotlight quit unexpectedly." repeatedly. So annoying. How can I stop this? It's ok Spotlight not targeting Evernote contents, just want to kill that message.

This is happening to me also.  This is clearly Evernote code that is breaking:

Process:               EvernoteSpotlight [15227]
Path:                  /Applications/Evernote.app/Contents/PlugIns/EvernoteSpotlight.appex/Contents/MacOS/EvernoteSpotlight
Identifier:            EvernoteSpotlight
Version:               7.11 (457847)
App Item ID:           406056744
App External ID:       831700955
Code Type:             X86-64 (Native)
Parent Process:        ??? [1]
Responsible:           EvernoteSpotlight [15227]

Date/Time:             2019-07-08 08:26:06.222 -0700
OS Version:            Mac OS X 10.14.5 (18F132)
Report Version:        12

Please say how i can disable (while broken) /re-enable (when fixed) Evernote from spotlight search

Thanks

I'm getting this a lot too. It seems to be usually happening in the morning, 7:30am or so Taiwan time. If I'm on the computer at that time it happens again and again, eventually stopping after 5-10 times, with maybe a few seconds between quits. If I'm not on the computer at that time I see the alert when I start using the computer later in the day, and it doesn't seem to recur.

I'm in 7.1.1; this happens whether or not Evernote itself is actually open.

This has also come up towards the end of the "Evernote Spotlight wants to use your confidential information" thread:

This issue has been ongoing for several weeks. See:

No fix for it yet as far as I know. Happens to me several times a day.

True, but it's sort of a different issue from the one in that thread. The "wants to use your confidential information" problem has apparently been fixed with 7.1.1 (or at least it hasn't come back for me). The "EvernoteSpotlight quit unexpectedly" problem has definitely not been fixed.

Both issues are mentioned in that thread. I've been having the spotlight issue for weeks. But yes, you're right - has not been fixed.

Yep i have too & for more than a couple of months i should add... If it helps i am on a MacBook Pro running Mojave 10.14.5 with Evernote Version 7.11 (457846 Direct)
Editor: 69.1.8237 (1f0aea9)..

When i refer to Evernote no matter what i do it pops up every 30s to 1m making using Evernote unbearable to use.. If i am not using evernote ie not even open the error message still pops up but i leave it open in the background so i don't have to keep closing the Report Problem window down..

Just trying to figure out if this has happened since the last Evernote update & if possible to roll back until its sorted..

I will post my update if i do - if no update then the Evernote Spotlight from Annoyance city is hounding me like Patrick Swayze singing " I'm Henry The 8th i am " in Ghost........ Just for clarity of how annoying the popup is..

PS i've only just managed to find the time to dedicate to his error outside of my 24x7 workload in case your wondering....

B-Rgds

Jimbo :)

Update - i can roll back but with it comes many issues- mainly security & database stuff pending on which thread you read.......

I am still getting abut 5 EvernoteSpotloight crashes a day, I am not sure what causes it or if they are random. I wish Evernote would fix this.

Same problem here, since I upgraded to the latest release (7.11) for Mac, on a MacBook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6.

It's concerning that there is no way to submit a bug report to Evernote without purchasing an upgrade to Premium. Log contents can contain personal information and shouldn't have to be posted to a community site.

Hi.  I agree - log information should not be posted to a public site.  However individual support is a subscriber-only feature.  You may get some help from a fellow HS user here,  or you could try the Twitter feed at @EvernoteHelps,  which - like the name suggests - is open to all.

How long will it tak to fix this bug with "EvernoteSpotlight quit unexpectedly"? It has been reported ages ago and still not fixed. Thats very poor service

I've had this problem now for ten weeks. So much for the new Evernote leadership making big changes to customer support.

Sometimes it takes a while (and discussions with other software companies) to find the cause of a specific issue.  Fixing it is usually pretty routine - once you actually find it...

It's very odd, I use Evernote throughout the day, and it seems I always have 6 crashes every day. I wonder if it's tied to some sort of an event, system activity, etc. that disrupts it. It's weird - ALWAYS 6 times a day.

The quitting has shifted for me. It was around 7:35am (Taiwan time), every morning. If I hit "OK" when it appeared, it'd reappear a bunch of times. But in the past couple of days the time has changed - now it's around 8:20am every day. So ... I dunno. No idea if it means anything, but it's weird.

Mine happens at around 10:30pm (+/- 5 min) every day. I don't have any scheduled tasks that run around that time, and I never shut down my Mac. It's a really weird bug. To me it feels like there's some process from the "cloud" that is triggering a script to run locally and that is crashing Spotlight. I know that EN has some scripts that can be remotely updated and executed -- almost like a remote control from their side. So I suspect this is what is going on.

Idle curiosity: what time zone are you in? For me the bug is currently around 8:20am Taiwan time, so that's, let's see (looking at app): 8:20pm New York time, 5:20pm Pacific time.

Evernote support: doesn't the post up above about "This is a known BUG" indicate it's already been filed?

I am having the same problem. It started about a month ago. Every time my Macbook Pro wakes up from sleep, the crash popup shows up at least about 4 times, really annoying. It is hard to understand why has Evernote not fixed the issue yet.

I sent a support request in about 2 weeks ago, I got this reply back then:

Please know that this is a known issue and we're planning to address it soon. Unfortunately, there is no workaround but Spotlight search and Evernote's performance is not affected.

I just asked if there was any update.

I am starting to consider my options to move to another platform and stop my subscription. This is ridiculous, on top of very little communication from Evernote. Is this the Support I pay for as a premium user? Disgraceful. There are too many other viable options these days, it's very telling when we need Evernote to fix this annoying issue they are silent.

Actually that's not true. Spotlight does NOT work. Only note titles are searched- content search from Spotlight is not returning results.

I heard back from support - they basically gave me detailed instructions to uninstall/reinstall Evernote to fix this problem! I was very skeptical at first and said so, they insisted to do this exactly as they instruct below. So I followed their steps EXACTLY, and guess what - I have been a full 24 hours with no crashes! I was getting 6 a day so this is very encouraging. I thought I would pass on the steps if you want to try too. I didn't want to believe it but I am very hopeful this bug is gone!

From Support:

I recommend you export any local notebooks and unsynced notes as a backup because they have not been synced to our server and will be unrecoverable after this procedure. For detailed instructions on exporting your notes, click here.

Then follow these steps:

  1. If Evernote is running, press Command + Q to quit the Evernote application
  2. Download App Cleaner from the App Cleaner website
  3. When the download is complete: open the zip file, then open the App Cleaner app (Note - I saw no zip file, the web site lets you just download the latest .dmg file, which I did).
  4. Open the ‘Applications’ folder in your Finder and drag Evernote to the App Cleaner window.
  5. After App Cleaner searches for and lists all related files, click Remove (Note: Please scroll down the list that app cleaner finds and check every box so everything is removed.)
  6. Right-click (or Ctrl + Click) on your Mac’s Trash and select Empty Trash
  7. Reboot your computer
  8. Download and install Evernote for Mac from the Evernote website
  9. Drag the Evernote icon into your ‘Applications’ folder
  10. Open Evernote and log in to your Evernote account

Can confirm. I had to go through this process twice because the first time I neglected to pay enough attention to "check every box" in App Cleaner. Once I repeated the process and ensured every box was checked (there was one relating to spotlight waaaay down the bottom),  I haven't had the error for over 24 hours, which is a relief.

Ok well that sure was a waste of a few hours. I did this on my 2 Macs (both running 7.12 Final) and it didn't do anything to fix these EvernoteSpotlight crashes. @Nick L. Please is this being looked into? Who can I send logs to or how to figure out what's going on here?

It took you a few hours to do this? Wow - took me 10 minutes tops. Anyway, I am Into second day for me, no crashes yet! Be sure and do the steps exactly, including checking the extra items in the Evernote uninstall that are not selected by default when AppCleaner runs.

From my experience, the last sentence is really important. The AppCleaner Windows is a little too small, you have to scroll down and actively select everything that belongs to the previous installation.

Did a total cleaning job some time ago, and had no trouble since.

Did you do a complete (!) uninstall back then ?

Are you on regular software, or running any beta on your Mac ?

@PinkElephant,

Yes I did a complete (!) uninstall back at the beginning of August (I actually ran through the process twice to make sure) - and there have been no errors since - until 24 hours ago.

On regular software. No beta that I'm aware of. This is my production machine.

OK

I‘ve send a direct mail to EN asking to look into this thread. We have 2 new posts here about it, they get input via Support as well, so maybe they have more to work with.

I did never have the issue strongly on my MacBookPro, just once, back then before the new version got released, and I suspect there may be some weird interaction going on between EN and some other stuff that creates the problem. But as a user, I am happy when my machine is running. I did the uninstall-reinstall once, it did solve the issue, and I have no further idea what to do if this doesn’t help.

Maybe open a support ticket yourself ?

I posted above that the problem came back for me too, I went through the same uninstall/reinstall and so far I have had no crashes. So it appears that something gets corrupted, for some reason, and the uninstall/reinstall fixes it (through replacement/reinitialization etc.). That sounds to me like something that needs to be fixed in software (Evernote) otherwise we will be faced with periodically having to uninstall/reinstall everything, to get a couple of months of crashless days in.

@PinkElephant Thanks, I did open a support ticket with them a couple of months ago about the same issue and they told me it was a known issue but they didn't have a proper fix. I assume nothing has changed since then. So I've done another clean and re-install, I'll see how that goes. 🙂

Maybe things have changed so far that there were releases on the Mac app in the meantime.

But if you plan to upgrade to Catalina soon, probably it makes sense to wait for this OS and app to release, and upgrade both then. This is not to say the current SW should not be fixed (IMHO it should), but probably everybody in the Mac/iOS section at EN is right now occupied with getting this new stuff to the ramp and off.

As I say, I have send a message, and wait to see when they are back to work tomorrow Californian time what will happen.

"EvernoteSpotlight quit unexpectedly" has been popping up on my iMac for several weeks now - several times a day.  Is there any progress in fixing this problem yet?

I have uninstalled / reinstalled several times. To be clear, it does not fix the problem. If anything, all it does is temporarily reset some timer or cache but inevitably the bug returns.

In the meantime I had contact with support. They told me the issue is known and EN is working on a solution.

Since I do not have the issue, maybe anybody here who has the problem may contact support as well and help them with activity protocols or other information if requested.

I also contacted Evernote support a few weeks back and they said the same thing to me.  It is a known issue and they are working on a solution.

The solution detailed by @Don0819 worked for me on all three of my machines that were showing this behavior. All machines are running macOS 10.14.6. However, the fix only lasts between a few days and a few weeks (varies by machine and usage level from what I can tell).

One of these days, I'm going to make the solution permanent and stop at step 7!

I too found success by applying the corrective measures @Don0819 learned from support.  However, since I have done that, the web-clipper is gone and EN has pulled it from Safari Extension page due to the 32 bit vs. 64 bit requirement of the upcoming macOS release.

I would love to have the clipper back.  Am I missing something?

For me WebClipper stopped, but came back 2 or 3 days later. However, I did not have to uninstall before.

Support told me to use the EN Helper tool, or switch to another browser like Chrome or Firefox.
