Notes reload when returning to app, resetting cursor position

Recommended Posts

I use a 'master' note to quickly jot down thoughts, todo items, and ideas, on my iphone, throughout the day. It's most effective when I can quickly open the note and my cursor is at the end of the list I've been adding to, and I don't have to scroll or reposition the cursor.

When I leave the evernote app to go to the home screen, other apps, or just lock the device temporarily - and then return - the note reloads. During this reload, the note is hidden, a loading animation appears, and then the note is reloaded, and the previous cursor position is lost. Is there a way to disable this reloading, without losing the ability for the note to sync to the cloud?

Not that I'm aware.  Approaching that situation from the other end,  you may be better off just adding a single short note each time you add a point.  Use a standard tag or title to find them at the end of the day,  and (maybe) merge the notes together in created date order (which includes the time) to get them chronologically.  Delaying or avoiding syncs may be a good way to lose note content if something more critical happens to your phone.

I have this exact same issue but it started fairly recently so it must be something changed in a recent update.

I have a note that I use for jotting down interesting words, often short notes about usage. Over the past few years the list has become very long because one line contains one word (or at most a short sentence) and there's a line break between these entries. So while the total amount of text is modest, there's a lot of scrolling involved. I sometimes return to words already entered to add some new thought or edit, and I'm usually bouncing back and forth between the note in the Evernote app and some other source like wikipedia or an article where I've encountered a new usage and so forth.

Until recently, when I bounced back from, say, wikipedia to the Evernote app, the note I was working in would be just where I left off, with the cursor right where I left it. This was useful and efficient because often I would be pasting in some copied text exactly where I left the cursor.

But now I get exactly what the original poster, Greg, describes: "When I leave the evernote app to go to the home screen, other apps, or just lock the device temporarily - and then return - the note reloads. During this reload, the note is hidden, a loading animation appears, and then the note is reloaded, and the previous cursor position is lost."

It's probably helpful to note that I have all of my notes stored locally on my phone for offline access ("download all notes" is enabled), and I have a newer iPhone with plenty of horsepower, available storage, etc.

Finally, I appreciate the suggestion from gazumped because it at least offers a workaround, but candidly that's not a reasonable solution, especially given that I have have not had the issue in the past. This is something introduced more recently which has (i'm sure unintentionally) thrown a wrench into the works.  As the name implies, Evernote is designed for note taking (in addition to much more), and the use case that Greg and I describe is probably pretty common.

Is this something that we can expect to be addressed in a future update?

Thanks,

Adam

Hi.  Evernote don't (usually) respond to individual queries here,  though you could always contact support to get a direct response.  It is part of the new CEO's policy at the moment to fix the various little "eccentricities" that the different apps seem to suffer from,  so I'd expect some action at some time,  though the scheduling is impossible to forecast.

From my observation, the automatic reset of the iOS app was introduced to solve the „search field not empty“ - freeze problem. Now when restarting or reopening the app, several data containers seem to be initialized to avoid a deadlock between different app functions all starting at the same time.

Since the app is refreshed when starting, the freezing did not happen to me again.

From my understanding of iOS, resetting and then reestablishing aspects like cursor position in a document is not supported by the OS. This is a typical function of full grown desktop or server operating systems, and even there not found in all applications.

From my understanding, it is much faster to open a new note whenever there is something to grab. Depending on the I-device, by force touch the new note can be opened by simply pressing the apps icon hard, no need to even open Evernote as such. This creates a very fast and convenient little note, one for each idea to grab.

By creating a summary note with links to all the individual notes later on, the many little snippets can be grouped together. Or notes can be merged using the desktop clients ability to do so. This could be done for example in a weekly review following the GTD methodology.
