Being held hostage until update

william1843

Idea

I am not very happy that evernote made me upgrade from basic to PAID account.

They held my account hostage (removed) until I signed up for paid access.

When someone in one of my user groups would ask about evernote. I world say I like the BASIC option.

Now I will let everyone know that they will make you upgrade to paid option.

I have flagged the renewal date and will be canceling at that time. This will give me time to find another option.

Explain, please. I have a second basic account, and I've never had to upgrade it to a paid account.

Payment is not required; users always have access to their data via a Basic Account.
There is a limit of two active devices; web access is not counted

I barely use Evernote for fancy stuff. And now I regret switching. Why? For the same reason I switched here from apple ios notes. I need to be able to find and backup my thousands of notes (writing mostly). I used to be able to find them on the mac laptop.. but as a former mac tech guru.. I tried for hours but failed. Seems apple wants control of your data and to make it hard to leave their neglected app also.

So i was a little incredulous when evernote  said I passed my monthly data limit about six months ago. But I had to just pay to upgrade to premium $7 a month or so. As I needed access to my notes while at Home Depot. Ugh. I guess they and I too figured we would forget.

Like I told the Toyota salesman who kept my pregnant wife & I until midnight... we would have paid for the extra tint.. if you were upfront about it. But now you can keep your car and a bad yelp review which will cost you $100k likely in lost sales. Honesty is key. Tell us up front. No sneaky stuff. I don’t mind paying. Few of us do.

Now I see I’ve paid that fee for half a year or more. It’s the principle. I could care less about the money.

But i fear I will lose all my writing when I downgrade from premium to free again. I’m sure this is the game  if this tech is unsure and might continue paying a app subscription out of fear of losing years of my notes.. can you imagine a busy person figuring all this out? Ca Ching! Another billionaire tech elite who will soon also usher in socialism out of his lottery-wining guilt? I’m sure destroying all freedoms will ease your subconscious pain and anger at the country which made the sole offense of.. not checking you more? (I’ve lived in such a place where the unchecked become unbalanced.)

Well.. did I know it was recurring payments? Did I not have an option for one time upgrades? Did I forget to downgrade the account? Hmmm.. I don’t recall so it’s my fault for sure.. but.. we are tired of this game.

So instead of just going back.. I see there is a whole procedure to backup your files just in case? But it’s not a real backup you can control. Unless you do ten steps and I frankly don’t even want to do this now. I want to work. Not fix tools.  That’s like using windows back in the day. Or now I’m sure also.

They want you like the mafia. For life. Hmm..  good products don’t need this forced unconditional love. They meet the adult conditions and get the best form of love for adults.. conditional love. I predict doom for all who receive the other, childish form of love. Unconditional love. Unchecked always leads to the unbalanced eventually.

my tip: shut off background app refresh. I bet that was the data overuse which started all this wasted time.

Confirmed; Each account tier has limits  https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209005247-Evernote-system-limits

>>As I needed access to my notes while at Home Depot.

For offline access, Mac/Windows maintain a full copy of our data; for the other platforms Offline Notebooks are a paid feature.

>>But i fear I will lose all my writing when I downgrade from premium to free again.

No, you won't lose access to your data when downgrading.

>>Well.. did I know it was recurring payments? Did I not have an option for one time upgrades?

No option for one time upgrade.  The solution is to immediately downgrade, which will take effect at the end  of your  paid subscription.

>>I see there is a whole procedure to backup your files just in case?

I use the export feature (html format) for my backups.   This is automatically scheduled on my Mac; completely hands-off.  The  manual process is simple; select notes > export

>>They want you like the mafia. For life. Hmm..  good products don’t need this forced unconditional love

Before I started with Evernote, I confirmed I could export my data.  Its a simple process; takes about 20 minutes for my weekly full backups.
