Undocumented keyboard shortcuts in v. 6.15 (Windows)

Recommended Posts

I've finally bitten the bullet (and a chewy bullet it is too) and updated to v. 6.15 of the Windows program, skipping over the bugginess of versions 6.8 and following. One thing I knew was that some keyboard shortcuts had changed in the interval, so I just went through the whole set. I found that there are several that are still undocumented in the online Help article on shortcuts. Here are the ones I found:

  • Application-wide: Ctrl + Shift + I = Display Note Info (no longer starts a new Ink note)
  • Application-wide: Shift + Alt + T = Search Tags (not Jump to Tags, as the documentation says, unless that's meant to be the same thing)
  • Editor: Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow / Down Arrow = Make selected text superscript/subscript (see a post by @emerick here)
  • Editor: Tab at end of table to insert new row (not documented in the Help article on tables either)
  • Left Panel & Note List: use of Tab / Shift + Tab to move among panels
  • Note List: Ctrl + Alt + L = Copy Internal Link to the clipboard
  • Note List: Not really a keyboard shortcut, but really useful info that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere (except this post by @CalS): Right click a note and press Ctrl when selecting Copy Internal Link to copy an external link to the clipboard, that is, a link that will open the note in the Evernote program from elsewhere in Windows (e.g., a desktop shortcut or a link in a document)

@Shane D., sorry to flag you down, but I wonder if these could be passed along to whoever works on documentation and help. Evernote has a great set of shortcuts, but undocumented ones aren't too useful.

[note] F4: apply the latest formatting option used.
[note] shift+click on tag: refine the list to show the notes tagged only (and keep context).  shift+click again on the tag to toggle the behavior.

How does Shift + Click on a tag differ from just clicking on a tag?

Because you keep the context (the current notebook or the All notes view). Just to be clear I am talking of the tags visible in the note (below the title) not the tags visible in the sidebar.

@Dave-in-Decatur Thanks so for much for this!

I've reached out to our specialist to update the article.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Click or Shift+Click seem to do the same thing for me for tags not in the search, that is adds the tag to the existing search.  However, Shift+Click will remove a tag that already exists in the search.

Thank you, that clears it up completely! I see that when viewing a particular notebook, it shows notes with the same tag only in that notebook. I still don't make much use of tags, but this will be useful as I add them.

I don't remember have seen in the doc :

ctrl + click on the help button of the menu to show hidden options for advanced users.

You're right, that's not documented. It's often been mentioned in these forums, so I was aware of it. But I'm not sure it's mentioned anywhere in Evernote's online Help. However, that could be because these are options that Evernote does not want users to find easily and play around with, except when instructed to by technical support people. That's just my guess.

well I know EV love to give unclear or incomplete info to their audience but .. the shortcut should be listed ... with a detailled page explaining every items of this advanced menu (+ a big red warning if they are worry for the beginners).

This wrong habit to hide the info or publish minimal docs (and changelog) must stop. (imho ;)). Only the promotional side seems fuuuulll of details..

Thanks Dave.  command-shift-i also works on the Mac

Did not know about this. To me, super convenient. Thanks
