Collapse stack option for Search Notebook

Robert_L

Idea

It would be nice to be able to collapse the stacks in search mode. I use search mode for quick notebook swaps because it takes up minimal screen space when taking notes. Currently other stacks take up plenty of space when they aren't being used in this mode.

When I write notes in EN I enjoy having both the list of notes open as well as the smallest possible way to switch to a different notebook. I usually have a lecture opened to the left and EN on the right for a given screen. For this reason, I collapse the Left Panel, where you can collapse stacks and jump between notebooks.

Not only there. If Evernote were to fully implement stacks, the list of stacks would be expandable and collapsible in the general view of notebooks. One can collapse and individual stack, but not all stacks. Alas, I think stacks are a pasted-on feature created by a development team that wants us all to do it with search and tags. They fundamentally don't believe in hierarchical organization as one essential tool for info management.

Stacks are certainly a pasted-on feature; they barely exist at all in the Evernote architecture (they're just a text string in a notebook), but of course they loom much larger in the Evernote UI. It seems doubtful that they are will be expanded on any time soon, as they're more or less going to be replaced by a feature called Spaces, currently being rolled out in beta form in the Business product but eventually aimed (we hope) at the Personal product as well. See discussions here: https://discussion.evernote.com/forum/305-spaces-for-evernote-business/, specifically the topic here: https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/111082-how-are-you-using-spaces/. Stacks will probably stick around, at least for now., since people do use them, but it looks like they're more interested in putting development effort behind Spaces.\

Update: Evernote is at now publicly thinking about implementing nesting notebooks; see https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/96180-nesting-multiple-notebooks-creating-sub-notebooks/?do=findComment&comment=496455. But there's no timetable, and Spaces come first.
