(Archived) Simply drag anything out of Evernote

Idea

Hi Guys,

I've just discovered Evernote and I was getting really excited about the possibilities for improving the organisation of my business information but I seem to have hit a MAJOR WORKFLOW PROBLEM and I hope I am missing something regarding the ability to easily get standard files (PDF, JPEG etc) out of Evernote on the mac. I don't seem to be able to simply drag a file I put into Evernote, out of Evernote - be that onto my desktop or into another piece of software, such as mail.

Surely, I am missing something blindingly simple, and this is not the case?

My current set up revolves around Devonthink Pro Office, a Scansnap S510m and Daylite Productivity suite, which works really well but I saw major bonus in using Evernote in-liue of Devonthink due to its online storage of the information put within it (in my case, scanned documents) which I can then easily access from my laptop and iphone when I'm out of the office. That appears to work as I would like it (at least as far as looking at my information is concerned), however, if I simply want to drag a PDF out of Evernote (put in there by the scansnap for example) I don't seem to be able to do it without some sort of "export to complicated file type followed by find the file within the new directory created" headache.

Again, surely I am doing something wrong and this is not the case is it?

Devonthink allows me to drag files about how and where I like and other than the lack of online database accessibility works pretty well.

I know that Evernote has the ability to email documents etc from within but that doesn't fit in with my Daylite usage which records and files all of my emails via apple mail. For me, I need to be able to scan or print documents into Evernote and then drag the scans / prints out again directly into mail to ensure I have a database of all of my incoming and outgoing messages.

I was just about to sign up for a premium account when I found this apparent workflow problem.

Can anyone out there help?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response. I actually saw that thread on the forum earlier but could't quite believe that what I was reading was accurate and up to date, despite appearances.

I am finding it very hard to believe that in 2010, using the latest version of OSX, a piece of otherwise potentially exccellent productivity software is lacking such a basic feature as dragging out of PDF's etc.

Does anyone know if there is firm plan / date for this "feature" to be added to Evernote as I won't be able to adopt it until I can drag files out that I have put in. Which is a shame.

Cheers

Evernote does not typically commit to firm dates for non-fatal features/problems. Sometimes you get a general indication of priority, but even that's not often. This doesn't seem like a huge show-stopper, particularly since there's a workaround or two, so I doubt that it's a critical priority, but I couldn't say for sure.

One alternative to dragging and dropping, at least in the Windows client, is good old copy and paste. No file operations needed. Does that work in the Mac client? Truth be told, I never thought to drag/drop stuff from Evernote. Of course, when I just tried it, I found an issue. B)

On the Mac client, you can drag anything that looks like an "attachment" within the note and drop it onto the Finder to save that file.

PDF files are the one omission, which you can get out of Evernote in several other ways (e.g. right-click and "Save As..."), but you just can't drag and drop yet. We do, however, plan to add this additional way to save the file from Evernote in the future, for consistency and completeness.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice guys. The right button save as is a big help in the short term but I won't be able to substitute Devonthink with Evernote until drag and drop PDF management becomes a feature.

Thanks again for the help.

This isn't working consistently for me - at least when it comes to many attachments on my 10.5.8 Mac running EN 1.10.0 (91023). From what I have recently discovered after a VERY frustrating Evernote session last evening, I cannot drag OR save many (but not all) attachments to my Finder. At this point, I don't know how else to get the attachments back out. For what it's worth, it appears it's mostly attachments I have emailed into my account that are giving me trouble, but I have found a few that I added "manually" that aren't working either. Also, I AM able to view the content of any of the .doc or .xls files with the quick look feature.

Help!

What happens when you select one of these file icons within a note and try to drag it? Does it fail to drag at all, produce the wrong type of file, etc.?

After a failed attempt, there may be useful information under: Help > Activity Log...

Can you right-click on the file and Save it?

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, so we may need more information from your configuration to help.

When I try to drag it, nothing happens. The icon will turn dark as if I could drag it away, but once I move the cursor, the cursor does not turn to the green circle with the + symbol. A clip of the activity log after trying to click and drag follows:

I also cannot export it via the right-click menu. I can right-click it, choose save as, give it a name and click save, but nothing happens. A clip of the activity log follows:

2010-08-08 18:52:37 0x50d810 [ENExternalEditHelper] INFO: Unable to write data for 'Save As...'

2010-08-08 18:52:37 0x50d810 [ENExternalEditHelper] INFO: source file: /Users/xxxxxxx/Library/Application Support/Evernote/data/51783/content/p14807/xxxxxxxxxxx.doc

Again, I am able to drag or right-click/save some attachments to the finder or the desktop. At first I was thinking I was having problems with attachments I had emailed to the account, but I'm finding some that will not work that I had not emailed.

I can submit this as a support ticket if you think I should.

Thanks,

Brian

Thanks for the report. I'm passing this along to our Mac team lead to discuss.

You may be able to get the content out if you select the notes from the list and use File>Export and then chose HTML for the format. The attachments should all be saved as separate files with the right type of extension.

Link to comment

Hmm.. that isn't working either. When I try, I get a dialog box with the message: Evernote was unable to load the data for a resource on the note titled 'xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx'.

The problem is - I *really* need this file - I've got a deadline coming up and need this file. I'm assuming I can dig through my files on my Mac and find it - but I don't really know where to start.

I wasn't expecting to put a file in and not be able to get it back out.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

Brian

It sounds like there may be some corruption in the data stored on your Mac. Can you access this note from the web in your account? If so, you should hopefully be able to access the file there.

Otherwise, you could try using: File > Export

to export to HTML and then get the file from that export directory.

Link to comment

As per my previous posts, File-> Export does not work.

Thankfully, using the web version DID work. Whew! This is a long shot, but do you have any ideas as to why my local db might have been corrupted? What are some possible scenarios that would cause random corruption?

Should I move my local db and redownload my 5400+ notes to ensure a good local db?

Link to comment

It's a little hard to say what could have caused the local corruption after it's already happened. I certainly can't rule out a bug in our software, but there are a lot of other moving parts in the OS X libraries (e.g. Core Data) and even hardware.

If you don't have any local notebooks, then quitting Evernote and moving the "Evernote" data directory out of its location (HOME/Library/Application Support/) will cause a fresh sync and a new database to be built.

If you have any local-only notebooks, you'll need to select and Export each of them first, and then Import them again afterwards.
