    Evernote for Windows 6.15 GA

Today we released Windows 6.15 GA. It's available here! (Link has been updated and now includes a hotfix) What’s in 6.15? Updated: We tweaked the More menu icon to match its look on other platforms. It’s the little things. Fixed: Error message for Template limit does not show the correct limit Pasting into a numbered or bulleted list would remove the list text between any images. This was less than ideal, but on the bright side, we fixed it. Turning bold text off then pasting something into a list would turn bold back on. We really like bold, but that’s taking it too far. Pasting text into Evernote from a coding text editor messed up the formatting, but it should be smooth sailing now. When you pasted bulleted lists from Word into Evernote, the bullets didn’t line up the way you expected. You could say it was a big mess. If you annotated an image using 2-byte characters (for example, Chinese or Japanese characters), the annotation would look garbled. And that was no help to anyone. When you restarted the app, any words you’d added to the dictionary would be flagged as misspelled. Opps! Wer’e sorrry abuot taht! If you shared a note with someone in your Evernote Business account, the sharing list unhelpfully showed you their UserID instead of their name. We’re looking at you, user #24601. If you shared a business notebook from an “invite-only” space, it wouldn’t show up in the Move dialog box, but we took care of that. The About dialog layout looked all wrong in languages other than English. And that’s not what it’s all about. We also fixed a few specific issues that might have caused the app to crash, like quickly clicking multiple notes in the note list. But that’s all in the past Sometimes the app wouldn’t respond if you were editing a note with five or more attachments, but now you can throw everything you want in there. You might have wondered what the “Attachment Status” field in the note info list meant. It showed you when images you attached to a note were been scanned for handwriting recognition, but it didn’t apply to Office docs and PDFs (because they’re not images). That was confusing, so we changed it to “Image Status” instead. Hopefully, that clears things up. Sometimes the app would crash when it should have been syncing, but no more
  2. UPDATED Monday, October 22, 2018: There's been a slight change in the Evernote.com code, which rendered the previous version of this fix unusable. The version in this message (message #1) will now work with newer versions of Evernote (6.16.2 and later), as well as older ones, going back to September 2017). You must have Swiss File Knife (SFK), a free program, to make this patch; see below for how to get it. WOOHOO! As of September 19, 2017, forum member Ashetty has got this working again! Get a copy of Swiss File Knife here, then see this comment for instructions and kiss those glaring white note backgroungs goodbye! THANK YOU, ASHETTY! If you've used versions of my patch before, here's the tl;dr: after backing up your Evernote.exe file and closing Evernote, this command will do the trick; feel free to substitute a different hex color string for #b2b1b3, which is a shade of gray (I'm partial to #c0dcc0 myself, which is a pale green), leaving the semicolon and two spaces before the slash intact; whatever hex color you specify will appear as the background color for your notes: sfk rep Evernote.exe -firsthit -text "/-webkit-touch-callout: text;/background-color: #b2b1b3; /" -yes sfk rep Evernote.exe -firsthit -text "/-webkit-touch-callout:text;/background-color:#b2b1b3; /" -yes You may require administrator privileges to make this work. As of Evernote for Windows Prerelease, which came out on or about 21 May 2017, a new editor is used for the Evernote desktop client. The technique described below NO LONGER WORKS WITH THIS NEW EDITOR. All the more reason for Evernote itself to finally give us proper dark theme! NOTE: April 2016: This technique also works fine with the new Evernote for Windows 6.0 client. I find the glaring-white background of the Windows Evernote client impossible to use for extended periods. I solved the problem for the Web version by writing a custom style sheet, which you can get here: https://userstyles.org/styles/110978/evernote-with-less-eyestrain But I really needed a solution for the Windows client, the entreaties of many users for a dark/nighttime theme having fallen on deaf ears at Evernote for years now: https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/45681-please-dark-theme/ And so I went spelunking and found where Evernote.exe actually codes for the white background in the display of notes. This doesn't affect the actual content of the note (if you export it, the .enex file is identical to what it would have been before you made this change), or how other people see your notes (they'll still see them with a white background). It only affects the display of notes on your own computer. However, this ONLY changes the display IF you have the following checked in your Windows Evernote client: Tools | Options | General | Enable beta features and updates The attached batch file will automate the entire process of making the change, but you'll need Stahlwork's free Swiss File Knife to run the file, or, if you're savvy with a hex editor, just read the comments in the batch file to make the changes by hand: http://sourceforge.net/projects/swissfileknife/files/ I've attached the batch file as EN-color.txt, but you'll need to rename it to EN-color.bat before running it (the forum software here doesn't allow uploading with files with the extension. bat). Look over its contents with any text-file viewer so you can see precisely what it's going to do. You'll have to re-run this batch file each time you install an Evernote update (which is why I automated the process), but it only takes a second to run. The net result will be as in the photo attached: a light-gray background for notes against a darker gray workspace (you can adjust the colors to other values by editing the batch file, if you wish). I've tested this on Windows 7 Pro 32-bit and Windows XP Pro 32-bit. Before running it, you will need to edit the batch file to have the proper pathing for your files. And you need to quit Evernote before applying the patch (exit the Evernote program, then right-click on the Evernote tray icon and select "Quit Evernote"). Note: if you have trouble applying the patch (you get error messages when the batch file runs), do a Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Windows Task Manager and close all Evernote processes, which might include Evernote.exe, EvernoteClipper.exe, and EvernoteTray.exe, then try the patch again. All best wishes! Rob EN-COLOR.TXT
  3. I'm unable to find the shortcut for highlighting text in the Windows Desktop based application. Kindly someone tell me. Thanks.
  4. Since one of the latest EN for iOS updates, I regularly experience that notes created and looking perfectly fine on my iPad show on my PC with various font sizes. This behaviour seems truly erroneous, I can't detect any regularity. As an example, compare the first bullet-point in note attached: as created on iPad and as synced to Windows.
  5. Hi, I have an paid plus account and have no interest in the premium account, so I want to permanently remove the Upgrade-Button from the sidebar. I removed the Upgrade-Button from the sidebar a few times, but it reapears after a few minutes. After googling I found that this had been an issue before in 2015 topic 1 topic 2 The solution there was to update to the latest version. But since I have the latest version, I don't see any other way. What could I do, to permanently remove the Upgrade Button from the sidebar? Thank you so much
  6. Hi everybody, suddenly I'm not able to annotate images anymore. Whenever I try I just get an empty window: It seems this has to do with the latest Windows 10 Update as before it was always working fine. I already updated Evernote as well as my display driver (Intel HD 5500) to the latest version and deactivated hardware acceleration for Evernote in the registry without any success. Any idea what else I could do to make this work again? I really need this functionality. Best, Jan

  9. I'm not sure when this broke, but I used to be able to click a note link when one was shown in a web page link, and it would open in my locally installed app. It used to be that the first time I would click an Evernote link in a web page, if the computer had the Evernote app installed, I would get a notification page in Chrome that would prompt me to choose whether to open the links in the Evernote web page, or in my locally installed application. I could choose the local app and make that the default. Now, when I click a link, the web version of Evernote pops up, and I can't get it to open in the app. I found an article related to this from about a year ago, and it said to remove all Evernote cookies from Chrome. I've tried doing this, but nothing has helped to make it work. Is this how things are going to be from now on? Or did someone break this functionality with the latest update? I would be happy to use the web version of Evernote, but it has so much functionality missing from it that I need from the local app. If the web version was on par with the app, I wouldn't care about this. But I really want my links to open in the app, not in the web page.

    Evernote Desktop won't open

Whenever I try to open Evernote, the program just shuts down altogether. It opens for a second and then automatically closes. No error message. I'm using Evernot v 6.4.2. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, uninstalling with Revo and reinstalling and nothing seems to work? Any idea what might be happening and how to remedy this?
  11. I am using Evernote on Windows and the iOS version on my iPhone and iPad. Here is a problem I have been experiencing for quite a long time: I keep a small number of shortcuts to frequently used notes. Some of the shortcuts never change, some others I change daily. Whenever I add a new shortcut in the Windows version and open the iOS version some hours later, the recently added shortcuts disappear, while the shortcuts that have been around for a longer time are not affected. This behaviour can be reliably reproduced. I suppose it could be a timestamp problem in the sync process of the iOS version, maybe connected to the time zone I am in (UTC+1), because only recently added shortcuts are affected. Did anyone else also observe this behaviour?

    Any Way to Edit Dictionary?

I accidentally added a misspelled word into my EverNote dictionary. Is there any way for me to remove this word? Where is the dictionary stored, and how do I review and change its contents? I am using the latest Windows version under Windows 8.
  13. Hi, anyone has a problem with the word count on windows? I have to do the procedure twice each time in order to have the right informations...
  14. Hello everybody, I wanted to know if any of you have an idea how to get the total number of notebooks and tags, especially for checking the limits of every Evernote account (250 personal notebooks & 100.000 tags per account.) Thanks in Advance. Carlos
  15. In Evernote for Windows 5, if I press the Escape key when a note is open in its own window, the note window is closed. This behavior is unexpected -- no other windows application I know of uses the Escape key to close a window. This has bitten me a few times. The only shortcut keys that make sense are ALT+F4 and CTRL+F4. The Escape key should only be used to stop or cancel a task. From the Microsoft Windows UX Design Guidelines: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa511331.aspx#keyboard Don't assign different meanings to well-known shortcut keys. Because they are memorized, inconsistent meanings for well-known shortcuts are frustrating and error prone. For the well-known shortcut keys used by Windows programs, see Windows Keyboard Shortcut Keys. And also: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms971323.aspx#atg_keyboardshortcuts_windows_shortcut_keys Windows Shortcut Keys As noted in the Designing the Keyboard UI section, it is important for applications to be consistent with other applications when using shortcut keys. This section introduces a series of shortcut keys that are used in Windows. To be consistent with other Windows-based applications, it is recommended that you map shortcut keys in a similar way. For more information, see General Shortcut Keys for Applications. -David

How do I add code blocks

I could have sworn there was an option at the top of each notebook to add a code block but I cant find it now and searching online it seems like i'm the only person experiencing this problem. I feel like I jumped into a timeline where the codeblock format never existed or I'v gone mad. Please does anyone remember there being a code block format option and more importantly is there a way to add codeblocks now that the option seems to be gone?

  18. After copying some text from GMail to Evernote, the text has large (wasted) space between lines. How do I edit the line spacing after the paste. Please, no work-arounds like passing through NotePad or paste as text-only. I want to be able to modify the linespacing in the Evernote editor. Thanks, --Myles
  19. It seems that every time I update to the newest versions of Windows, thinks keep getting worse. I am running this version - (306770) Public (CE Build ce-1.39.4387) Every time I start up windows, I keep getting the "lets get started" display. I click off of it, but it comes back. Also, used to be able to double-click an expanded PDF to open it, but now I have to right-click and select open. Finally, the last release completely compressed my listing of notebooks and tags on the left with a smaller font (see attached). There is no option to put it back to a more reasonable view. Anyone see the same issues?
  20. I've finally bitten the bullet (and a chewy bullet it is too) and updated to v. 6.15 of the Windows program, skipping over the bugginess of versions 6.8 and following. One thing I knew was that some keyboard shortcuts had changed in the interval, so I just went through the whole set. I found that there are several that are still undocumented in the online Help article on shortcuts. Here are the ones I found: Application-wide: Ctrl + Shift + I = Display Note Info (no longer starts a new Ink note) Application-wide: Shift + Alt + T = Search Tags (not Jump to Tags, as the documentation says, unless that's meant to be the same thing) Editor: Ctrl + Shift + Up Arrow / Down Arrow = Make selected text superscript/subscript (see a post by @emerick here) Editor: Tab at end of table to insert new row (not documented in the Help article on tables either) Left Panel & Note List: use of Tab / Shift + Tab to move among panels Note List: Ctrl + Alt + L = Copy Internal Link to the clipboard Note List: Not really a keyboard shortcut, but really useful info that doesn't seem to be documented anywhere (except this post by @CalS): Right click a note and press Ctrl when selecting Copy Internal Link to copy an external link to the clipboard, that is, a link that will open the note in the Evernote program from elsewhere in Windows (e.g., a desktop shortcut or a link in a document) @Shane D., sorry to flag you down, but I wonder if these could be passed along to whoever works on documentation and help. Evernote has a great set of shortcuts, but undocumented ones aren't too useful.
  21. Created a few hotkeys using AutoHotKey and figured I'd share. Feel free to share your AHK scripts. Each hotkey is prefaced by a description of what the hotkey does. For those not familiar with scripting, you can change the hotkey assignments and inputs like notebook name or tag name to suit your setup. If you have questions, just ask. I think there are a number of users on here who are familiar with AutoHotKey. ^e = CTRL + e #n = WIN + n As mentioned, those can be changed to whatever you want. ALT is ! and Shift is + ;make Evernote active ^e:: IfWinExist, ahk_class ENMainFrame WinActivate return ;Evernote - local hotkeys (Evernote must be the active window) #IfWinActive ahk_class ENMainFrame ;Create new note in default notebook without inheriting any tags (from whatever filter may be in effect). I used WIN+n as the hotkey, so it's CTRL+n when I want a new note to inherit tags and be added to whatever notebook I'm in; and WIN+n for a new note w/o any inheritance. #n:: Send, {F6} Sleep, 10 Send, {LControl Down}{n}{LControl Up} return ;Insert timestamp preceded by "_Completed: " which makes it easy to search for 'completed' notes. Hat tip @csihilling #c:: Send, _Completed:{Space} Sleep, 10 Send, {LControl Down}{;}{LControl Up} return ;Move to Main notebook #m:: Send, {LShift Down}{LAlt Down}{m}{LShift Up}{LAlt Up} Sleep, 100 Send, main Sleep, 100 Send, {LAlt Down}{o}{LAlt Up} WinWaitActive ahk_class ENMainFrame return ;Toggle !!Daily tag #d:: Send, {LAlt Down}{n}{LAlt Up}{t}{!!daily}{Space}{Enter} WinWaitActive ahk_class ENMainFrame return #IfWinActive More hotkey scripts in this thread: Simulated internal note links Hotkey to access Reminders function (I got sick of using the mouse for this as EN does not provide keystroke access to this function)
  22. So Evernote for windows updated to (303048) Prerelease yesterday, and it has a new (to me) bug that makes Evernote effectively unusable for note taking. Every time the note Autosaves, the cursor jumps to the top line, column zero (upper left corner of the note), so if you're typing at the time, you end up typing at the very beginning of the note, often in the middle of a word. I've experimented with this - it appears to happen 100% of the time on Autosave. As far as I can tell there doesn't seem to be any way of turning off autosave for notes. Just to be clear, I'm not talking about Evernote syncing - this is the note you're typing updating in the main Evernote window. I actually positioned the new note window so I could see the note list in the main Evernote window and I could see that the preview for the note updated at the same time as the cursor jump (in other words, autosave). I did a quick experiment where I created a new note and then just started typing until the autosave happened to illustrate the effect. Screenshot is attached. Please look at this ASAP - this is a showstopper bug for Evernote for windows, makes note taking effectively unusable. I'll have to take notes in Evernote web until it's fixed.
  23. I'm running Evernote 6.13.12 (Beta 3), but this behavior also occurred in the latest non-beta release. Windows 10 Version 1803 Build 17134.81 ********************** After copying an image from Snagit 2018 to the clipboard, I attempted to paste the image into a note. Regardless of whether I use the shortcut key or the Edit menu paste options, the image does not appear. The cursor moves to the right the width of the image, but then just stays there. The image is not visible. This problem is new, and may be related to Windows 10 Version 1803 because the problem did not exist prior to that. Also, the default hot key for paste (Ctrl-Alt-V) does not paste, but causes a new blank note to be created. If I reassign Ctrl-V to the paste operation, I get the same result: a new note gets created instead of a paste operation occurring. If I save the Snagit image to disk, then drag-drop it to Evernote, that works. But it's annoying that clipboard operations are broken. <rant>I am so annoyed at common things that break whenever an update occurs that I'm thinking of giving up on Evernote altogether.</rant>
  24. Could anyone check if any of the following characters display correctly in a Notebook name or Tag name after updating to the Windows 10 October update that was released today? ❢ ❞ ★ ⍮ I had to roll back to the earlier Windows version, because these characters are not displayed correctly and caused sync problems. I guess it has something to do with Windows 10 updating to Unicode 11.0 combined with un-updated fonts. Thanks.
  25. After trying to indent a code block, every line become seperated block.
