  1. I'm facing a problem in search my article in EN and dont know why it happened. I have 2 article as in screenclip1.jpg. They're tagged as !ppl-m-n0-mid and !ppl-m-3-mid. Then I did find: tag:!ppl*, EN returned to me 2 results. This is awesome! However, the strange thing happened when I find: tag:!ppl*m . I expected EN will show 2 results, just bcoz the tag are !ppl-m-.... But EN only returned the one tagged !ppl-m-n0-mid (screenclip2). So why? After that, I found tag:!ppl*-m. At this time, EN returned the 2nd article which is tagged as !ppl-m-3-mid. Well, is this a bug in EN? Or just bcoz of my tags? I wanna try this before I putting all my big library in EN.
  2. Hi, I use Evernote on both the desktop and mobile phone android. Yesterday I renamed some tags on my Evernote desktop. Then I did the sync and I noticed that some tags have not been updated on mobile phone. Some tags have been renamed while other tags have retained their former name. For example, I had a tag "Articles", than I have renamed in "Article" on my desktop. After sync, the name on the mobile phone has not changed.I also checked the whole list of tags on both the desktop and on mobile and I realized that some tags on the desktop were not present on mobile. It's a strange behavior.Any suggest? Thanks for attention Luigi
  3. Newbie learning to understand EN, and arrive at my preliminary approach to use. Plan to minimize Notebooks and use Tags instead as my primary organization approach and means for retrieval. Searching: 1) It seems that you can NOT search for a match to a portion of a Tag name. The only partial Tag search one can do is that the Tag must start in a certain manner, but can be followed by any other characters. This is done by tag:xxx* 2) Can you use the "any" operator when searching using tag: and if so, please give a couple of examples of the proper syntax and what it would find. Tags: I am considering a tag structure all at one level (no nesting) that would be like this. My questions are really about the usefulness (or lack of it) for numbering Tags; the particular choice for the Clusters of Tags below is just an example ... 00PERSONAL 01skills 02health 03motivators 04inspiration 10WORK 11xclient 12yclient 12project 20FAMILY 21spouse 22daughter 23son 30HOME 31project 32dreams 33time savers 40FINANCES 41investments 42retirement plan 43taxes 50RENEWAL 51creativity 52travel 53hobby 60READING 61productivity 62pleasure 63health 70ARCHIVE etc. Ok, you get the idea. The cluster starts at a new numeric ten-spot and is in CAPS. For clusters that might be quite populated 3 digit prefix would keep it within that cluster. Would memorize only the 10 cluster (life focus) areas and when entering a Tag for a new Note by simply typing "6" EN would show me all of the choices in the READING cluster, and arrow keys if needed could navigate deeper into that cluster from the dropdown. 3 This seems to be how it functions in Windows desktop app, would it behave similarly in other clients? 4) It'd seem that a search tag:6* would bring up any Note tagged with something within the 6? cluster tag:6* tag:0* should bring up Notes that were tagged both with something from Reading cluster and from Personal cluster - Is that right? 5) It seems that a drawback to nested tags is that Parent tag name does NOT appear. If I have nested Tags of Michael under a Parent Tag Work clients and a nested Tag Michael under a Parent Tag Family things would get very confusing. While my tentative approach avoids this, it looses ability to collapse Tags, but to me that seems like a small price. What am I not understanding about Nested Tags? What are some of their advantages? It seems that if you use Ctrl+Alt+T to get at and assign Tags to an existing note, that you only see the child-tag without the context of its Parent; to me it'd be a lot better if EN used approach like Quicken to show Parent:child when it displays Tag. Thanks for any of your thoughts and helping to cut my learning curve further.
  4. Easiest if I explain the scenario: Lauch the Evernote Mac client. Define a tag. Let's call it "mytag". Assign the tag to 10 notes. Sync. Look at each note to confirm that the tag is assigned. Yep! Look at the tag to confirm that it's count is "10". Yep! View all notes. Search for the tag (tag:mytag). Evernote finds some of the notes with the tag, but not all of them. Has anyone else seen this behavior? Tech support suggested I delete the Evernote client and reinstall it from the website, not the Mac App Store. I have done that, and there is no change in behavior. If this is indeed a problem and not user error, it seems pretty serious.
  5. I have a parent/child tag hierarchy like this: Parent 1 - Child 1A - Child 1B - Child 1C - ... Child 1Z Parent 2 - Child 2A - Child 2B - Child 2C - ... Child 2Z etc. Is there syntax to search for notes that are not tagged with any child of Parent 1? (That is: notes that do NOT contain Child 1A, Child 1B ... or Child 1Z...)
  6. Hello Evernote team Number of cathegorization levels is very limited in Evernote. I can see tagging as the only one manner to substitute at least one more level for cathegorization. But this manner is not very practical if there is need to scrool down all possible tags when trying to filter notes in selected notebook and to "enter another cathegorization level". This would become more usable if "tags menu" showed only tags that are available for selected notebook as shown in picture. Would such feature be possible in future in Evernote? Thanks RastyG
  7. I'm using sort of inline tags in text of notes. If I want to "tag" some part of text i am writting "[my tag]" in text. Then I can find all notes and lines which are tagged with "[my tag]" - it's cool and useful! But I have a problem. When I search "[my tag]", search also matches notes with "my tag" (without brackets). For example, search for "[funny]" will match note with "As my grandfather used to say, - I'm your grandfather. [funny]", as well as note with "He said it was funny, but it wasn't." I tried hard - basic search - funny //74 results - basic search - [funny] //74 results - search with quotes - "[funny]" // 73 results, but yet wrong matches there (check big screenshot) - search - "\[смешно\]" // 73 results I've readen http://dev.evernote.com/documentation/cloud/chapters/search_grammar.php http://dev.evernote.com/documentation/cloud/chapters/searching_notes.php Please help. How to search "[word]" with brackets?
  8. After I copy text from a web page to Evernote -- by use of a hot key -- I click the popup to bring up that note, and then add tags. However, whether I "click to add tag" or use F3, there is a long delay before I can enter the first tag. During this delay there is a lot of disk activity. I use Evernote almost exclusively without syncing to the web. The database is 1.9 GB, and I have about 100 tags. The computer, which runs Windows 7 Pro, is top of the line with lots of memory. The disk the databse is located on is not fragmented and does not spin down. The delay occurs the first time that I clip something to Evernote. Adding tags to notes created soon (within 5 minutes) thereafter goes without delays. What can I do to fix that initial delay?
  9. How can you tag a group of documents? Doesn't seem logical to have to label a hundred of them one at a time. The 'edit tag" is gray when I pick a group of documents and can't see a feasible way to drag a tag on top of them. Thanks
  11. Your tagging and archiving system is crucial and here is how Evernote could greatly improve it: Evernote must implement something like this:http://handytag.elitwork.com/home.htmlhttps://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/handytag Explanation from me (and the Firefox add-on author):It makes bookmark tagging easier, by providing a complete set of most relevant keywords. These keywords are retrieved from many different sources :the tags you already gave to one of your actual bookmarks.the keywords the webmaster gave to his webpage.the tags given by del.icio.us users for the same page.the tags the keyword extractor found using KGen (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4788).and finally synonyms for the above found keywords. You no longer would need to make a brainstorming session each time you want to add a new bookmark. It will do it for you! Please forward this feature request to Evernote. If this becomes part of Evernote I will move my complete bookmarking system from a certain competitor over to Evernote and become a Premium member. I'd be happy about a short reply. Thanks!

  13. Hello, Lately, I cannot create new tags anymore. Is there some kind of limit (I have 33 existing tags)? I use the android app. Thank you
  14. Hello, I'm new to Evernote...we'll I've had it a while but never had the time to look into it properly but now I'm all set up & ready to rock! MY PROBLEM: Keeping (new) tags tidy. My system uses nested tags with various non-alphanumeric characters to keep everything in order. The problem is that there will always be new 'random' tags; tags I might not use that often or do not belong to my main groups. POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The ability to set up an automatic default parent tag for all new tags. Very similar to the "By default, place all new notes into the following notebook" option. This would keep the tags tidy & out of sight - ready for a weekly clean! Thanks...and thanks for a great product!
  15. How do I pull out all my notes under say 5 selected tags? What I am doing now is to click on a notebook, then click on "Create Saved Search" icon with the magnifying glass and a Plus sign, and go a manual: note: Abc tag:"volume" tag:"less than 100USD" tag:"etc" As i used up to 5 tags or more, it is very tedious to do a saved saearch, save it and check it only to see that i have no items under this 5 combo. then i repeat and try a different combo which is very time wasting. Is that an easier way to do this, like a drag and drop tag to somewhere? thanks much!
  16. I think I have encountered a bug. I want to search within a stack using multiple tags. I click on a stack, and then click on a tag. Immediately, the left panel scroll bar starts flickering up and down. Technically the search worked: I see the appropriate notes come up. However, I can't scroll down in the left panel to view other tags (I can for a moment, but then the scroll bar snaps to the top and starts flickering again). I also cannot select multiple tags (using ctrl click). When I try, nothing changes. I also cannot select a different tag. The flickering just continues. Please note, I CAN perform this type of search in a stack using syntax (e.g. stack:tasks tag:@work tag:project-A) and even save the search, but this is not very useful to me because I often need to move back and forth between different tags inside the same stack very quickly. Clicking is much easier and what I need. I am using Evernote 4.6.1.7860 (free, public version) for Win 7 32 bit.
  17. 1. Is the idea to add enough tags so you never have to go through your list of notebooks and notes on the lefthand side, and you can instead just use the search field at the top? 2. Why would you add keywords to a notebook? Wouldn't you just add them to the notes within the notebooks? Thanks in advance.
  18. (using Evernote for Windows 4.6.0.7670 ) I want to use my mouse and click tags to build a searchs by both adding additional tags AND addiing exculusions of tags These are the mouse and keystrokes for seaching tags Left click mouse - Selects a tag to seach Shift-Click - Sellects all the tags between and including this tag and the previous one sellected Alt-Click - Adds this addition tag to the already sellected ?????? - Excludes notes with this tag from the already sellectedWhat is the quick key for this? It use to be something like Ctrl-Alt-Click. and I can't find it listed anywhere in the forum or wiki. This use to work So to clearify what I am trying to do. instead of typing this: tag:a tag:b tag:c tag:f -tag:mI want to be able to do this: Left mouse click tag:a Shift-click tag:c (picks up all the tags a to c) alt-click tag:f (adds f to the seach) _____-click:m (but exlude tag m)
  20. I am currently organizing notes from a course. Several topics base themselves on one prinsipal, but in different ways, and they do not only cover this principal, but they all relate to it. Intuitively I want to organize the same tag under several other tags, but Evernote doesn't seem to want to let me do that. Has anyone else had a similar issue and found a clever way to resolve it, if not, has anyone got any good ideas on how this can be solved? -Hans
  21. I've created an Applescript to export all the PDFs I have in an EN notebook to an archive folder on my Mac. I've got it working for all the existing notes I have, but as I add new ones, I want it to archive those as well with an Applescript that would run once a day. The problem is in determining what notes are new. I can't simply archive everything with today or yesterdays creation date since I modify the creation date of notes I add (eg when I add a receipt, I change the creation date of the note to match the one on the receipt). A few things I considered include: Having the script add an "Archived" tag to each note after it exports the PDF, but then finding new notes would require the ability to search for all notes that DON'T have the "Archived" tag, and I can't see how to do that. If I used the "Archived" tag option, I also considered finding every note in the notebook, then finding every note with the "Archived" tag, then comparing the two lists and returning the differences, which should be every note that doesn't have the "Archived" tag, but my Applescript skills don't seem to be up to the task (I'm a "copy and paste" programmer, but learning). I could of course manually add a tag to every note I create, and then have the script remove it after an export, but that leaves too much room for user error. Anyone have suggestions on how to accomplish my task?
  22. Hi all, A search of the forum provided no results to my question...and I'm a bit new to the program: Is there a way to tag only part of a note? For example, if I'm in a meeting and we're talking about what needs to be done on a project and I'm typing what Bob, Mary, and Tom has to do...can I tag just a section of the note with their name so when they go to their computer/device they can enter their name as in the tag search and it brings up only that part of the note? That way they don't have to go scroll through lines and lines of text in the note to find where their assignemnt is? Maybe a hashtag or something? Hope that makes sense. Thanks. Jonathan
  24. ANNOUNCEMENT: using TagHunter is now part of BitQwik, the natural language search assistant for Evernote. All future changes to Taghunter will only be found in BitQwik. Please upgrade to BitQwik now. See this thread: After several years of using Evernote and being an enthusiastic Tag user I have ended up with nearly 4000 Tags in my account. Worse, many of my tags have multiple variations and several misspellings. Plurals, singular, with a space and without, different tense and more, this situation leaves me with an uneasy sense that I'm forgetting the right Tag form whenever I do a Tag search. Being a programmer I decided to fix this so I created TagHunter. TagHunter is an intelligent power search tool that can search your Evernote note store on the Windows platform. It can wade quickly through thousands of tags and can even do simultaneous tag searches, the latter being a critical feature when you can't remember exactly how you tagged an important note. When you find the Tag that you are looking for, TagHunter will open the Evernote Windows client with the correct tag search loaded. TagHunter is amazingly tolerant of tag variations even when the variations are in the middle or at the end of a tag, and knows how to take apart multi-word tags properly to do an intelligent match. Important: Tag Hunter requires the latest Evernote Windows client. If you have trouble, please try upgrading your Evernote client first. Enough said. Watch the 2 minute to see exactly how TagHunter works and how to use it. All the searches shown are real searches against the thousands of notes in my Evernote account and the thousands of tags they are annotated with. Here's the download link to TagHunter version 1.4.2.2b. If you have any earlier version of TagHunter on your system, please uninstall it first before installing 1.4.2.2b. This version, unlike earlier versions, does not require admin right to install it and has several important bug fixes for Windows 7 and some new features! A summary list of updates across all versions is below. Don't forget to follow this topic if you want to be notified when new versions are posted! UPDATE 1 - NESTED TAGS SUPPORT: I just added nested tags delimiter support. If you put something in the new box for entering one, and you enter a search term that contains that delimiter, then only tags that contain that delimiter and share the same prefix will be included in the search for that search term. For example, I created a parent tag called Parent and three child tags called Parent-Child 1, Parent-Child 2, and Parent-Child 3. I then entered the search term Parent-Child for the search. Because of this only the Tags that start with Parent were included in the search. In essence, it's a quick ad hoc filter for those of you that use nested tags with prefixes. The little question mark button next to the delimiter setting box explains it in case you need to remember how it works. See this post on this thread for a screenshot. UPDATE 2 - LIST VIEW: New feature, a simple list view to go with the Tag Cloud view. For those of you that want a linear list instead of the Tag Cloud Viewer, I have now added a simple linear list of the matches that also show the scores. The list is in descending sort order so that the best matches are near the top of the list. See the second screenshot below the picture of the Tag Cloud View. Important: a 100% score may still not be an exact match since TagHunter's search has a built-in tolerance algorithm that treats very close matches the same, so this is not an error. TagHunter's scoring algorithms are complex and somewhat non-linear but be assured, the best matches will be near the top and the weaker ones will be towards the bottom of the list. UPDATE 3 - SORTED TAG CLOUD: The tag cloud is now sorted so that when it first appears, closest matches are closer to you visually and weaker ones are to the back of the Cloud. Here's a screenshot of a sorted tag cloud. UPDATE 4 - CLIPBOARD SUPPORT: The latest version now allows you to select rows in the list view and copy them to the clipboard so you can paste them into other applications. It supports the full Ctrl-Click, Shift-Click selection mechanisms you expect when working with a list box. Thanks to @jbenson2 for the suggestion! UPDATE 5 - SEARCH NOTEBOOKS TOO: Thanks to a suggestion by @BurgerNFries you can now use TagHunter's powerful fuzzy search to search your notebooks too! UPDATE 6 - Copy Notebook/Tag name to clipboard: Thanks to suggestions from @jbenson2 you can now copy a sorted list of either your Notebook names or Tag names to the clipboard. See this post for further details. UPDATE 7 - Log Out of TagHunter: Thanks to suggestions from @Har Garaets and @FactMan you can now log out of TagHunter if you are in a multi-user environment, and also do multi-tag filtering when showing notes in the Evernote client. See this post for further details. UPDATE 8 - Check for Updates and Google Search Integration: Integration with Google Search has now been added thanks to a suggestion from @FactMan. Also, there is a new tab that will tell you if you are running the latest version or not. See this post for further details. UPDATE 9 - Sort by Tag/Notebook in List View fixed: This version fixes a bug @FactMan found with the column sort in the List View. Now, when you click on the column titled Tag, the list will be properly sorted alphabetically by the Tag or Notebook name. UPDATE 10- Note Counts by Tag or Notebook in List View: This version can now calculate the number of notebooks per Tag or per Notebook for each item in the search results. See this post for details and a screenshot. This is brand new software so please report any problems on this thread and I'll answer them. I'm looking forward to your feedback and I hope that TagHunter is as helpful to you as it is to me. Here's a screenshot of the program. I purposely misspelled venture capital, the third Tag in the search query shown, as ventnor capitol to show TagHunter's ability to handle badly formed tags either in the search query or the tags in your note store. The tag it found, ventur capital, is actually misspelled in my account that way yet TagHunter found it anyways during the simultaneous tag search shown in the screenshot: Simple List View with Scores Sincerely, -- roschler
