  1. Please add a 'format painter' as per MS Word, and "show formatting info" also as per MS Word. Currently formatting often out of control, eg. when pasting in from web, and no way to get rid of bad formatting issues locked in (undo fails) other than clear formatting which wipes the whole note. At least make 'clear formatting' apply to selection.
  2. Hey guys, Apologies for adding ANOTHER buggy formatting complaint to the pile - I am aware these problems are tricky and well-discussed already, but can't find a solution to my now longstanding annoyances with copying and pasting text to and from Evernote. Specifically, I am finding frequently that pasting text from .pdf documents into Evernote (which I always do with shift+cmd+v to adjust to EverNote format) will sometimes look fine in the OSX editor, but then when I paste it into another editor (in my cases usually Pages), there will be weird formatting issues -- most commonly line breaks between words, which are impossible to delete. So I'll paste a paragraph into EverNote, copy that paragraph later and paste into Pages, and there will be big gaps between words that defy all logic! I've also realised that the spaces that appear correspond to the line breaks on the original .pdf (see attached files) Pasting the text into TextEdit and converting to Plain Text does not resolve the issue, the gaps are still there even on TextEdit. Forgive me if this is a frequently-cited issue, I couldn't find a similar forum post. Also forgive me if this is a basic error, I'm no expert in the terminology and code of text formatting. Thanks! Callum I've included files of the copy and pasted paragraph in its original pdf, on Evernote and on TextEdit, to show how the formatting changes
  3. Hey! As I am taking notes with Evernote, I have to manually create headers and sub-headers for my paragraphs. Normally I do it by copying previously created text. Although this works for me, it is not really convenient as it involves making some extra clicks&hits, i.e. scrolling and changing formatting back to 《normal》 style. Any chances of getting some simple styling options soon? Thx, Andrey.
  4. Hello, I'm Evernote user for quite some time already but it's my first post on this forum simply because I didn't have any issues before. Evernote has very useful option to convert any note to PDF file. Unfortunately created PDF page has almost no margins and font is always few sizes larger than in the original note. Both issues together make the document look quite ugly. I use those PDFs for example as cost estimate documents that I send to customers. Is there any way I can make PDF look as beautiful as the original note? Thank you!
  5. [I submitted a support ticket on this but am also reporting this here for greater visibility and others' comments.] There are problems with Outlining that only 'Simplify formatting' has been able to (partially) fix. Those problems (which I've also previously submitted support tickets on) include issues of simple cut and paste in outlining. Replacing Simplify formatting with 'Make plain text' makes Outlining unusable. I have many thousands of notes with Outlining and will have to now move away from Evernote unless this is restored. Please restore Simplify formatting ASAP.
  6. When copying content into Evernote, it retains the source formatting automatically. This is nice, but sometimes you want the content to come over as plain text and adopt whatever formatting is in use at the 'paste' spot or as plain text. This option is perfectly exemplified within Microsoft Word, and Evernote would benefit greatly from adopting this feature given that notes take content from varying sources; We should be able to designate whether we want to import the formatting or not. Evernote Web has a button in the editor to 'Remove formatting', but it doesn't always work correctly, I believe it is more geared toward removing formatting that was created by the editor itself rather than as a tool to convert imported content to plain text. My current solution is to paste into Notepad and re-copy from there. It'd be nice to see this baked into Evernote to spare me my pain.
  7. Is there any way to turn off the formatting that puts the giant letters and blue band into notes when you merge them? It gets really annoying when you don't want to change the formatting you have, and I haven't figured out a way to automatically set things to what they were before the merge happened. Thanks!
  8. I am new to Evernote (Android on a Samsung Galaxy TabS) and I just entered a neww note with some text. Now I want to format some parts (bold, underlined ...). But the formatting tools do not appear! What am I doing wrong? Please see attached screenshots showing the formatting switch green or not green and no tools anywhere. BTW switching the format switch from ON (green) to OFF and vice versa doesn't always work: sometimes it does not react. Help anyone? Thnx
  9. I am trying to copy really simple text to Evernote. The text has single tabs to separate different parts of text. Like this: However, in Evernote, it results in: With lists longer than two lines, it results in a huge random zig-zag, which takes a few minutes to put everything back to how it was. Why is this, and how do you fix it? Regards.
  10. I have a note that is primarily in Checkbox format, although I have added bulleted paragraphs in between as well. When the note initially displays in non-edit mode, when the words wrap, the subsequent lines are flush left with the cheekbox. FYI - When you go into edit mode, the formatting is corrected and the paragraph wraps with the proper indentation. I believe I am at version 7.6 (Android), Evernote Basic. This is just possible minor bug. Overall, fantastic product! Thanks.
  11. Hi All, Apologies if this has been asked before but i could not find a thread that matches with what I am looking for. I have integrated IFTTT with EN to post to my WP, this recipe works correctly. But the format is off, any amount of paragraphs are join to be one big block of text. Is this a known bug or is there a way to resolve it? I'm using both web and iOS app.
  12. I've realized that I spend as least as much time fixing the formatting of my lists as I do writing them. Evernote apparently has no intention of addressing this issue, so I'm moving on. I know I'm not adding anything new to this forum in saying this; people have been complaining about it for years. This is intended purely as feedback, as there doesn't appear to be any other feedback mechanism.
  13. I know there's a form for submitting issues to support, but it's easier to describe in a RichText box like here, and including screenshots. I'll submit a link to this post to support. Most of this bug is minor, but I am building up to the more significant, annoying bug that I can only partially reproduce. It seems almost everywhere I read about frustrated Evernote users considering OneNote, Evernote supporters jump in with arguments about what features OneNote lacks, or what Evernote handles better (e.g. tag search). But I don't care about features. I just want a working editor; one that doesn't trip me up every several copy-pastes. I hope this report brings Evernote one step closer to a smoother experience for everyone. I am using the latest release on Windows, version 5.9.6.9494 (277494). Instructions: Create a new note. Type "Hello, world!" and Enter to create a new line. Copy the text including the new line (alternatively, Ctrl+A and copy). Paste into the the new line. The new line isn't pasted, and the caret appears to move to the end of the previous line: Now, if at this point you try to click to check if there is a new line under the text, then you see that you cannot click there and the caret moves to the end of the second "Hello, world!" so you see there is not a new line. However, if instead of doing anything else (including clicking anywhere) after the initial four steps, you type a character, e.g. "a",then the "a" appears with the new line where it should! Now, here's a little variation on the above. Add a linebreak between the two "Hello, world!"s: Now, paste again. This time, the phantom caret is at the beginning of the first line, instead of the end: And as before, typing a character, e.g. "b",magically creates the missing new line as well as the "b": Next, we're going to repeat the above, except after changing our font, i.e. create a new note, set the font to something else, e.g. Georgia, set the font size to something else, e.g. 24, and repeat the "Hello, world!" steps from the previous section. The first thing to notice is that when you paste "Hello, world!" (with the linebreak) for the first time, besides the phantom caret, the font and font size change back to their defaults: But did they really change? Well, not at the phantom position. But if you immediately type the character "a",you see that the font has indeed changed: This is one of the most annoying bugs for me. Seems innocuous, but here's why: Try backspacing twice (erase the "a" as well as the linebreak): Looks like it's fine, right? Georgia, 24. But try typing anything, e.g. "foobar". That caret position is now "cursed." It will only type in the default font henceforth. Even if you click away and come back. Now here's the part I can't reproduce right now from scratch. Sometimes (actually, almost all the time for me), even if I continue backspacing, the caret position continues to be "cursed." That is, if I erase more of the "Hello, world!" and try typing, I get this: (Smaller screenshot due to attachment limit. Also, again, this is a faked "reproduction.") This has been happening to me for many months now, on a daily basis—I just can't seem to reproduce it from the simple "Hello, world!" example, yet. But I'll continue trying after this post. Anyway, what happens in my longer notes is that, whilst copying and pasting sentences back and forth, paragraphs here and there, moving lists around, etc. I end up with cursed positions all over the place. There is no way to remove a cursed position by backspacing, or even deleting characters to both sides of the cursed position (which is the really weird part). The only thing I can do is select the area (or Ctrl+A) and manually set the font and font size again to what they should be. And for long notes, this can take up to 10 seconds (another bug I will report). It's profoundly annoying when I'm trying to take notes very quickly and edit the organization of my lines for the font to keep resetting to a default that doesn't match what's around it. (For example, sometimes I use a larger font size because I have the note on an external monitor that is a little farther away—and then when the default font kicks in, I can't see it because it's too small.) I hope someone at Evernote can solve at least the reproducible steps above, and after I install the update I can follow up with whether I continue to see this last unreproduced annoyance. I'm certain I'd know within a few days. Thanks for reading.
  14. Evernote is a great experience. Except for making lists/bullet points. They're bulky, waste space, and don't format well. Trying to copy/paste into/from other apps results in a huge mess, so I just avoid using the built in tools altogether. In this sense, it needs more word processing power. A few more settings like the ability to manage lists, control numbering, indent, and spacing to fix this problem.
  15. I've read several related requests to fix the text editor in Evernote. Many ask for further details about what the problem is. I'm sure I'm not the only one to keep hitting these bugs. (1) Cutting and pasting lines: Type four lines of text in a new note (even just "a", "b", "c", "d"). If you select, say, line "b" by moving to the front of the line, hitting Shift+Down to select the whole line, Ctrl+X to cut, then move down to line "d" and Ctrl+V to paste you get a blank line inserted after it! So it somehow copied *2* linebreaks. Why? The only other way of selecting the whole of line "b" before cutting it is to hit Shift+End, but then when you cut you get a blank line left there and when you paste in front of line "d" you *don't* get a line break. Please fix this - it makes it much harder than it should be to rearrange lines. (2) Bullets: Create a note with two bulleted lists, separated by some text. Cut or copy an item from the middle of the top list, and paste it after the second list - you get a weird gap between the two. Why is that? So now paste it in the non-bulleted line before the second list - you get it separated from the second list by some non-bulleted text. That's OK, you think, I'll just delete that line in the middle, but again you get this weird gap between them and you have to concatenate two items and then hit enter to get a bullet in front of both again. (3) Check boxes: What's up with those? Half the time when adding more items to a list of checkboxes I either end up with two checkboxes before an item or none. Sometimes hitting enter after a checkboxed item creates a new line starting with a checkbox, but sometimes it doesn't - I haven't found out why, but it seems to happen when you come back to a previous list of checkboxes - if you enter a list all in one go it generally does what you'd expect. (4) Formatting and paste: A number of times I go to paste some text into a note and the format *should* be the same and everything should line up but it doesn't, and I end up with bullets with slightly different indentation, or slightly different bullet size (has the font gone wonky?). Could a developer at Evernote *please* just get assigned to fixing the bugs throughout the text editor (or could one of them show their altruism and moonlight/do a skunkworks project to fix the text editor for all of Evernote's thousands of users)?
  16. Here's what went into last night's release: Formatting Options - We’ve heard a lot of feedback from our users that the current design is not very discoverable and is getting in the way when editing notes. All formatting options are now all located in one location above the note as they are in the current client. You will see the options once you start editing the note. 17. When I am typing in a note, the formatting keyboard shortcuts don't work. For example, if I press command-I, the italics icon in the toolbar will be highlighted, but nothing will change as I type. I can go back, highlight text with the mouse, and then press command-I to italicize, but not to change the formatting for new text. This feature works without a problem in my iPad app, but not on the desktop version (Evernote 6.0.13, Mac OS 10.7.5). Anyone else having this problem?
  18. With the latest update of Evernote, I'm having some formatting issues that are really affecting the way I take notes on my MacBook. Every time I try to change my text to be bold or underlined by hitting ctrl+b or ctrl+u etc, I start typing but the program immediately reverts back to its normal setting, so I don't even get a single character typed in bold. They only way I've been able to change my text is to type it out and then go back, highlight it, and change it there, which is incredibly inconvenient when I'm in the middle of class. Has anyone else had this problem? Would anyone be able to suggest a solution? I have tried quitting and re-opening the app to no avail.
  19. Seeing list formatting issues from content pasted in from Outlook email or word documents. Seems more like an unintentional formatting bug. It's been going on for a while (and I've posted about formatting issues before), but just thought I'd would elaborate more on a specific one where the font "type" is actually changed when performing certain actions from a list that was copied into Evernote from Word (or directly from an Outlook email). This is probably related to other posts I have seen (and commented on already) about formatting problems with lists in general. Here is the original list. When going to Line Item 3 (or any of the sub-lists for that matter), and backspacing to replace the text with something else, the font type is changed for just the text at th every top. Original font is Calibri - font changes to Symbol. Additionally, hitting enter again at the end of any of those sublists (you would think to start another bullet item) causes the whole formatting to go out of whack altogether (see how the sub-lists have been shifted all the way to the left) This is not something I am able to reproduce for lists created in Evernote. I am using Evernote version 5.2.0.2503 Pre-release, Windows 8, Office 2013.
  20. I am attempting to paste text from an exisitng note to a new note. The text includes formatting (fonts, colors, bold, italics). How can I paste text between notes and preserve formatting? Since it is in the same Evernote text language, I presume that it must be possible. Thanks!
  21. Hi all, I have kind of a doozy of a question, so this is probably geared more towards the power users and the code savvy. I recently realized that the notes in Evernote are in XHTML which is awesome because, being someone who knows XHTML, allows me a whole world of formatting possibilities that I can't get through the Evernote application itself. Obviously to do this, I need to open the files in my code editor and work on the actual code of the file. After some poking around in the directory structure, I found where the notes are stored, however finding specific notes is a bit of a guessing game at this point. The notes themselves are not uniquely named(they're all named note.xhtml) but rather it's the directories that they belong to that are uniquely named, meaning each note has its own directory. The names for the directories, however, are long strings of hex code that for the life of me, I can't derive any specific meaning from. This makes finding a specific note that I want to work on basically an exercise in futility. I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to what the directory name hex codes are referring to, or if anyone is a lot smarter than me, if they could figure it out. A directory name looks like this: FF00EA3A-80B3-4F9B-BE8E-9470B8155087 If you compute each hex value you get: 4278250042-32947-20379-48782-163211845652615 So yea, I totally don't know what to make of this, but I really want to understand what the hex values correspond to so I can easily find notes and open them in my code editor to allow me to really get after some formatting on these things. Thanks!
  22. I'm using Evernote (6.0.5) on a Mac (10.7.5), and when I want to type italics, bold, or underlined text I have an issue: When I type [command]+I (or B or U), the 'button' is illuminated blue, but as soon as I start typing, it clears and my text is regular. It does the same thing when I click the 'button'. The only way I'm getting it to work is to type some, select that text, click or [command]+B for bold (italics, etc), then keep typing. I can only clear it doing the same thing. i.e. if I'm typing bold text and want to stop, I have to select some text, and click the bold 'button'. Is there something I'm not doing correctly or a setting I have messed up? Thanks
  23. I'm currently using v5.8.3.6507 on W7 (64). I don't often copy-paste between Web pages and Evernote, but when I've done so in the past, the content from those pages generally keep their formatting (e.g. type, colours, tables etc). When I've tried to do that today the formatting is lost and the content formatting merges with the default note formatting. If I use the Web Clipper, the selection can be clipped and the formatting retained in a note. However, this is not the ideal solution for me as I want to be able to copy-paste from multiple sections and pages into a note. How can I retain the formatting of the content being copy-pasted?
  24. I don't often use Evernote and I am unlikely to commit more to it or upgrade because of the text formatting differences between Evernote and other apps, but that aside, here are two smaller improvements that would get me to upgrade if they are premium only. Offer a view annotations only option. If I am reviewing annotations in a 1000 page document, do I want to review all 1000 pages, or just the annotations that were placed on just 1% of 1% of the pages?! 1000 pages or 1 page, the answer I hope is obvious. Secondly, in the Cleary extension, please let me choose the Notebook it goes into when first synced. I now have to manually edit each time which means logging in via the browser instead of getting on with my work.
  25. Can you please consider adding a formatting painter functionality. Its really a pain not to be able to quickly format multiple sections of font really quickly.
