  1. I want to encrypt a note. I have 2 step verification, but when I right click on text, I don't see the Encrypting Selected Text option. I've tried loggin into my account with both Firefox and Chrome in Windows. Is this function only available to premium users? By the way, the help document below makes reference to a "passphrase" for which I don't recall any setup. Thanks, Jeff
  2. Hi folks, I'm interested in learning more about encryption in Evernote. I've downloaded the OS X client and figured out how to go about encrypting some text within a note, but I'm concerned about the fact that Evernote uses insecure HTTP to transfer the contents of any given note from my local machine to your servers. First off, that's just plain bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Bad. Shame on you. You need to get with the program and use SSL/TLS *everywhere*. No exceptions. This makes you look amateur. So my questions are: If my note syncs in-between the time that I type the string that I'd like to encrypt and the time that I complete the encryption, then the string of text would be transmitted to your servers over insecure HTTP? In one of your help docs I read in the comments that you only offer this to your premium clients. Is that correct, or has that changed? The reason that was given for only offering SSL to premium clients is that it's "too expensive" to offer this as a default feature. That's bullshit. And you know it. I'm okay with the idea that you just hold it back for premium clients, but the idea that it's going to burn so much more infrastructure that you couldn't possibly afford it because it would be a huge cost to your bottom-line is both greedy and economically impossible. It also creates the unnecessary intonation that SSL is some sort of luxury, which is detrimental to the on-going process of locking down the internet in general. As a major app, you should have a better policy in this regard. You're in a position to lead and educate your massive user base, instead you're making it out like SSL is unnecessary and expensive. And you know better. I guess that last one isn't much of a question, but it's hugely disappointing to find out that you're so careless with how data is transmitted and that you're using cost as an excuse for a rotten security philosophy.
  3. It appears that encrypted text and shared notes are not compatible each other. Take this example note. The encrypted text icon shows up, as does the passcode hint if any when the icon is hovered over. However, there is no way to decrypt the text whatsoever, making the presence of the icon and its corresponding decryption hint useless. Would it be possible to incorporate text decrption from a shared note URL in the foreseeable future?
  4. Yesterday I opened Evernote on my iPhone to look up something in one of my encrypted notes. I tapped the string of dots & started typing my pass phrase. After 3 taps I noticed that I didn't have the decrypt prompt and I was simply appending text. Tapped backup, and tapped one too many. The dots disappeared. I shook the phone to undo, more and more frantically, but apparently Evernote didn't recognize this as an undoable event. Shaken, I went to my iPad and iMac, finding that synchronization had worked too well and too quickly. The entire encrypted text was gone. Undo didn't work. I hadn't deleted the note so it wasn't in the trash. A lot of valuable information was gone with just a tap. After feverishly searching FAQs and forums I found that Premium subscribers like me could access backups of their notes. I downloaded the 2nd most recent backup, imported it, decrypted it, and found disaster had been averted. Suggestion: If someone tries to back up over a block of encrypted text, get their pass phrase first.
  5. This applies to all OS versions, but, at present, for me, the issue is for a Mac and Android phone and tablet. I'm am aware that Evernote cannot encrypt a whole notebook for various reasons of lost functionality. I dont really accept these reasons. Its like saying "a car would be easier to start, share with unlimited people, if only we didnt have those key thingies". Anyway, I accept that I have not been able to find a way to do it with my limited skill level. Please dont anyone mention the encrypted text - it does not meet my needs in anyway. I am currently a premium customer until 11 February 2015. I have cancelled my rolling subscription and wont resubscribe if Evernote are not going to allow some way of a client side encrypted notebook; I filled the feedback form with the following "I need encrypted notebooks". 1. Is there a way that I can encrypt my notebooks, notebook at a time, on a Mac and use them on an Android? 2. What are the best Evernote alternatives, out of Beta (Turtl looks promising but carries a Beta warning) that people are thinking of using to secure their data, when their current premium subscription runs out? It's a real pity because I've really come to rely on Evernote, with multiple OS access seems to future proof it against changing hardware by users. Pommy
  6. Hi, I've seen other post about encryption or more importantly the lack of encryption in Evernote. But I've not seen any response from Evernote in those posts... perhaps I just missed them, perhaps they don't bother to comment here. And yes - you can encrypt some text in a note. But ... The list of 'hacks' occurring is getting longer everyday and using unencrypted solutions is starting to seem foolish. I have been using Evernote since 2009, it is my brain backup and I'm feeling a bit vulnerable. I'm nearing a point where I need to decide to stay with Evernote or find a more secure solution. I truly love using the product, it is part of my daily routine and it is where I store everything. Which is exactly why the lack of complete system wide encryption is becoming really concerning. Yes it is hard. Yes I would pay more money for it above what I pay for my premium account. Based on some of the technical details I've gleaned about Evernote, my guess is that full system encryption would be a search performance hit at a minimum. Got it, tough technical problems. But what I need is a company/product that is solving these tough technical problems and has the ability to project when they will have solutions in the market that I can use. Or I need to start thinking very prudently about finding another product that is solving these hard problems. So ... to anyone who may be in the know ... Where is Evernote at with encryption? When is full system, every bit of my data going to be as safe as they can reasonably make it? (all data fully encrypted in transmission and encrypted at rest wherever rest may be). What does the product road map look like?
  7. "Evernote is your extended brain" - that's what marketing says. And it's true - notes can be quite personal. So it should be possible to encrypt whole notebooks on the computer or smartphone to protect them against any unwanted access from government, evernote staff, hackers, etc. Even if that means that it's impossible to access that notebook via web app. It's easy to have two notebooks - one for personal stuff and one for general matters (which can remain unencrypted). Actually, I'm surprised that doesn't exist alsready. I know you can encrypt texts, but it's a hassle to do that again and again.
  8. How do you encrypt the content of a Note when you're using Evernote on iPad? Right click and control click are not available.
  9. Encrypted portions of a note cannot be opened For what it's worth, this "new Evernote web application" is many steps backward. Please give us back the very good product we had! Thank you! I do NOT want to be involved with Beta testing... just give me back the excellent web app that we had before. Thank you! Mark
  10. Hi, Today I noticed that I can see encrypted text in Snippet view (on snippet itself) as plain text. If I switch to Card view, encrypted text or encrypted parts of the text are hidden on Cards as should be but on Snipped view the text is visible. I am using Evernote for Windows and running Windows 8.1 and Evernote 5.6.4.4632 (272632) Public. Regards, Deworn
  11. Can't access encrypted text in web beta (encryption link in note non click-able). Unusable for me at the moment as all my text has to be encrypted. Please fix.
  12. I used to be able to see encrypted parts of notes on my Android phone. I still CAN see the data with my IPad and Windows client (so I know the password is still the same ). Im guessing decrypting notes on Android is no longer supported ? Or is it nit supported on Android where the whole device has been encrypted via Android security? Its annoying because Android on Evernote keeps reporting an error message telling me Ive got the wrong password - when its clear that I have entered the right password.
  13. Hi, I am using evernote on my windows7. I want to know how to change the encryption password or hint question?
  14. In Adobe Acrobat Professional, I can encrypt a PDF by choosing Properties | Security | Password Security. If I bring that file into EN it disappears into a black hole, leaving only a thick horizontal black line in the event horizon. If I bring in an unencrypted file, it displays properly. If I encrypt it within EN, it also goes into the black hole. Running 5.4.1.3962 for Windows (271962) Public. Fortunately it was my own file that disappeared, thus I can recreate it. I don't use this feature often and can't say what happened to any prior encrypted PDFs in my database, if I even had any. Thanks in advance for fixing. Right now very clearly EN can't deal with PDF text it can't display, and encrypted PDF files are commonly used even as copyright protection. Thanks, Lena
  15. I'm a huge, raving fan of Evernote - I rely on it to a huge degree - and I'm hoping that the Evernote team is working on some improvements along these lines: 1) The method of encryption is clunky. It's so bad that I've taken to putting all of my data into one card and encrypting the whole thing. When is notebook-level encryption coming? 2) The Windows application needs to have the same security as the mobile apps; an additional layer (PIN code, etc.) 3) After being abandoned by SafeWallet, I'm eager for a digital wallet solution that will be around for the long haul. Evernote could add simple templates, and the above-mentioned notebook-level encryption, and add a whole new level of functionality to their service (without being a distraction from their core mission) Anyone else been asking for the same things?
  16. Snowden's documents revealed that the internal traffic between Google's data centers (and Yahoo and others) has been spied by the NSA. Now Google, Yahoo and Microsoft want to encrypt the traffic between there data centers. As far as I know, Evernote has also two data centers and all the data is mirrored. So my question is: Is the traffic between Evernote's data centers encrypted?
  17. Not sure how useful or relevant this might be, and I'm just downloading a trial myself; but for those sending files to the Cloud (and I saw a definition of the Cloud today as "Someone Else's Computer") in a newsletter I subscribe to, Fred Langa is suggesting 'pre-encryption' as the new new big thing. He uses Boxcryptor.com as the example. Note that you're uploading an encrypted, so by definition unindexable and unsearchable, file. But if you really, REALLY don't want to share the contents.. How is this different from all the other encryption software already out there? No clue.
  18. I like to share but sometimes I need to be more secure! Sharing my data stored in Evernote with those who don't use Evernote sounds useful, however is this funcationality any better than publishing the information on your own blog site and linking to that instead? I know Evernote provides a link which cannot be searched by the likes of Google but is that enough? The link can be circulated to any party without sight of who is accessing it. You could adopt a policy of only sharing data already in public domain. Things that can be done to improve data control. 1. Link expiry. If you no longer wish to share, expire the link. Currently doesn't exist in Evernote Business but should be a straight forward win. 2. Use certicates to encrypt. Present an access log to my data. e.g. Reporting back on certificate use and data decryption, when, where and who. The recipient of the link would follow a simple registeration process, create an account, access the data. Now if I no longer wish to share the data I can revoke the certificate and stop decryption. None of these exist in the Business product yet they would improve the security of the service.
  19. In the past I have been able to encrypt highlighted text by right clicking and selecting the option from the dropdown; but lately the option seems to have dissapeared. Am I going something wrong here or
  20. The encryption feature for text within notes is great but I'd like to make two suggestions to improve it on both PC and iOS. On the PC (and other platforms I imagine) there seems to be no way to change the encryption passphrase on text already entered and encrypted. The iPhone has a way of removing encryption but there doesn't seem to be an easy way of doing the same on the PC app. Can we have an option to 'remove encryption' if you highlight either the text or some of it? A bigger bugbear is that in iOS, encrypted text, which is actually black, is shown in grey with a light green background, making it very hard to read. Could we have another way of showing that text is encrypted, either in the settings, or instead of the light green background. The way of surrounding text with a box as on the PC is better, or how about a green vertical line to the left of the text with a padlock symbol? And certainly please keep black text black. Otherwise, thanks for a great app.
  21. Encryption of texts no longer works either on my IOS device or on my computer. Right clicking and selecting or choosing from the menu both do not work. I do not have a premium account.
  22. I've decided recently that I'm going to store some personal information in an EN note, which I've encrypted with EN. If I lost this info, it would suck, but anyone that can log into my EN account (anyone on my phone or my computer) could delete this note. I want to set a passphrase for the note that causes it to be immune to deletion without the user first entering the passphrase. Is there a way to do this?
  23. Hello! AFAIK, EN uses RC2 encryption to encrypt text which is not very secure any more. A post in 2008 said that the reason for this "weak" encryption is the fact that US Government doesn't allow the export of stronger encryption. Do you have any news about this topic? Do you plan to support AES 256 encryption in the future? evernote-fan
  24. I just discovered a rather disturbing Evernote bug. In Evernote 5.0.7 running on Mac OS X 10.8.3, simplifying the formatting of a note (select all, then simplify formatting) deletes any encrypted portions. Sadly, I found this out through losing a rather lengthy piece of a note I had encrypted. Incidentally, is there any chance Evernote has note versioning hidden somewhere? I'd really like to be able to recover the lost portion of my note. Thanks!
