  1. Several ongoing editing bugs stem from one more fundamental problem I believe. Each has been discussed separately, but never fully resolved, so I'm making one post to draw attention to the bigger problem. Here are a few examples I've experienced for years: The "Quantum cursor" - cursor location after a paste is randomly above or below the inserted content Bullet list start/stop - item in a bullet list may include 0, 1 or 2 LF, sometimes you can end a list with 2 CR, sometimes it just keeps making more bullets Paste w/o formatting, sometimes you get the formatting of the line above, sometimes below removing formatting - sometimes it's impossible to remove formatting of a section of text, it's like tar stuck to your cursor, and every line it touches gets infected by it I've come to accept Evernote's core line editor is just 'quirky'. Apparently, so have others, since no one's screaming about it, and as basic as it is, release after release it just NEVER gets fixed. My Theory: The core line editor functionality isn't based on a solid, adequately formalized and characterized design. It was probably hacked as one of the first bits of code at the very beginning and it is long overdue refactoring. Normal issue when developing a complex codebase. e.g. Paste. Insert XYZ into the sequence of characters ABC\rDEF<cursor>GHI\n at the cursor. do you get ABC\rDEFXYZ<cursor>GHI\n or ABC\rDEF<cursor>XYZGHI\n. This is a problem addressed since the very earliest line editors from IBM ed, Edlin, Wordstar, WordPerfect, vi, Emacs, and implemented in the editor used by this very forum. The other issues listed, and several more not listed, suffer from the same lack of formal definition. Perhaps, when moving the cursor, we are inadvertently placing it before or after hidden format markers, and sometimes invalid or inadequately terminated formatting, leaving dangling bits: <b>this text is bold \r is this text still bold? If this is an accurate conclusion what the editor needs is a fomal definition: for all editing function: character entry, cut, copy, paste, delete, (including the more complex ones: image paste, table paste, Web clipping, etc.) cursor location, rules for CR and LF, formatting start/stop, does the end of the line include or not include the CF (e.g. in MSWord moving cursor to left margin guarantees you're selecting the entire line including LF or CR) Proper Bracket Matching on formatting markers. e.g. HTML editor or Web browser parses nested formatting: <li><b>text</b></li>. A helpful workaround would be "View Formatting" that exposed the underlying formatting structure so we could delete extraneous LF, CR, or unterminated formatting.
  2. Hi. I'm running Evernote version 6.7.5.5825 Windows 10 Home on a Dell laptop. The problem seems to only occur when I am working in the Notes section of a scanned business card. As I'm typing, and especially if I pause briefly, the cursor jumps back to the top-left corner of the Notes field. In this case that would be just before the word "Hi". I usually do this in the panel view mode (not a separate window), but I have tried opening the card in its own window and still have the same problem. I have not found a work around for this. I suppose I could type the note in another program, then cut & paste it into Evernote, but that seems silly.
  3. Hi, I have the newest free evernote version for mac (Version 6.12.3). Whenever I am typing in a note, especially if the note is a business card from scannable, the cursor keeps jumping to the start of the tab or note or any other area I am typing in. It has been driving me crazy. I saw a similar post that had solution for the problem, however, it was related to windows. I cannot work-out a way to fix this. Do you have any ideas?
  4. Hello I'm using Evernote almost on a daily basis. I have Evernote Premium and since a while the cursor is jumping from wherever I'm typing back to the Title of the note. This is extremely irritating. I have version 6.5.4.4720 304720 public on a Windows 10 Enterprise machine. This also happens on my Windows 10 Pro with the Creators Update, so it does not seem to be a Windows issue.
  5. In Windows Evernote I'm in a note and the cursor is giving me the finger, that is, showing the finger/hand pointer even when I am not pointing to a link. The cursor works correctly as a text cursor but appears as a link pointer. I can right click and the "remove link" is grayed out indicating I am not over a link. When I click, the text cursor appears and the finger mouse pointer still shows. Anyone else? This appears to be only on some notes.
  6. Bug: After checking a checkbox, it takes two clicks to move a cursor. Steps to reproduce, at least IME: Create a new note. Write a bunch of text. Add a checkbox. Check the checkbox. Note where your cursor is and how it doesn't move when the box gets checked. This is all fine. Use the mouse to click in another area of the text. The cursor won't move. Click a second time in that area of the text. This time the cursor will move. I'm assuming this is a bug since I can't think of any other reason the cursor wouldn't move after one click. P.S. I reported all this in a support ticket 1774871, but that was in the context of Evernote's table bugs. The employee seemed not to want to talk about that bug as perhaps there were too many discussed in that ticket. This thread, though, has nothing to do with tables as I just discovered this problem exists independent of them.
  7. I am having serious problems with my Evernote iOS. I can often not move the cursor. I am a heavy iOS user and I definitely know how to move a cursor on a screen. However, in Evernote, the cursor often refuses to move and if it does, it may jump to the wrong place. Between it's refusal to select, copy and paste most of the time and this cursor problem, Evernote is crippled as a serious note taker. Please advise a workaround for the cursor bug until you (hopefully soon) get this bug squashed. I do not expect this type of quality when I am paying for this product.
  8. I love Evernote and use it extensively. One of my frustrations is that the iOS menus are so hard to read. Visibility is so bad that I literally have to guess which item I am selecting. The menu I am talking about has bullet points, numbers, check boxes and indent and outdent. I am always guessing because they are so hard to see. The menu color is black and the item color is dark green, so no contrast means hard to see. Hard to see means hard to use. The same is true of the text formatting menu where you select underline, bold, italics, etc. The worst menu item are the boxes and indents and outdents. When selecting these, it actually changes the document, so if you make mistakes you need to undo them. A second problem related to the check boxes is the location of the cursor. Many times I try to place the cursor right after the check box, which is quite tricky. Sometimes you can only place the cursor to the left of the box (which makes no sense to me, since I always start my list with a box and put text after it). If by miracle, I can get the cursor after the check box, often times when I start to type the text appears to the left of the box (before it instead of after it). I use the check boxes a lot. And it is so frustrating that I usually have to go and sit down on my PC and iMac to fix the bullet lists there. I would love these seemingly little usability fixes to enhance my Evernote experience.
  9. Currently running EN for Windows 5.9.6.9494 I think this behavior appeared in the last update or one prior, but in pretty much any existing notes, if I add blocks of text for a list, and then select this block of text and click the Add Checkbox tool, it switches to a select-all mode, selects all text directly above as well as the selected text, and puts in a bunch of additional check boxes in empty areas above my selection, all the way up to the top of the note. Kind of difficult to describe. Also noticing that when I copy a "template" I've created and go to edit some text in the copy, the cursor jumps to a spot lower in the note. Anyone else seeing anything like this? Been going on for weeks. I keep checking for updates, but not seeing anything.
  10. Blinking cursor when editing text in Evernote (Mac Version) has been driving me crazy. Is there any way to disable it or at least make it blink less frequently? Thanks!
  11. Running 6.0.11 (451580 Direct). I have a long note (fills the height of the window) and when I press Enter to get a new line, the cursor drops a line, but the page doesn't scroll up until I start typing. To reproduce: Position cursor at bottom on note (visible on screen). Press Enter and the screen scrolls so that the cursor is on the last possible, visible line. Press Enter again. Cursor disappears. Type something and the page jumps to show the text. First noticed on 6.0.10 and upgraded to see if this would fix it, but hasn't. Anyone else able to reproduce? Update: Okay, this is the same problem that lots of people are describing as a scrolling bug in the latest release.
  12. Why when I use Evernote on my iPhone am I not able to view the cursor when I am typing using the keypad? The cursor is typing on the page underneath the keypad or somewhere out of screenshot and I can't see it. If I move the screen and then start typing again, the cursor again disappears and the page moves. This problem comes and goes but it is incredibly frustrating! Has anyone else had this problem? Please help!
  13. Hi all, There's a little thing that often frustrates me in Evernote. I want to see if others expect the same behaviour as me. When I press option + left, option + right, or option + backspace, I expect any program to modify the cursor so that instead of moving or deleting one character, it performs the operation for one word. The equivalent to this in Windows is ctrl + {operation}. My problem is the way that Evernote cursor interacts with the checkbox. If you perform option + left on the first word of a paragraph, it correctly places the cursor at the start of the line. However, if there is a checkbox at the start of the line, the cursor will skip the start of the line, and go to the first whitespace. A checkbox is represented here by '[]' Place cursor after 'is' Press option + leftCursor should now be located before 'is'. In paragraph content, this is the case, but with the checkbox it skips to before 'test'. Bizarrely, it appears to continue until whitespace is found. Pressing option + left after 'another' will take the cursor all the way to before 'monkey'. Am I alone in thinking this?
  14. Hi guys, I'm using Evernote app on Mac OS X Mavericks. I take notes on Evernote from websites, by either copying and pasting text or by using web clipper for articles that has linux commands. The problem is with blinking cursor on the dark backgrounds. Every time I want to select text in my note and use arrow keys, I could barely see the cursor moving. Please have a look at the attached screenshot. The cursor is somewhere on the last second line. Is there any setting in the Mac OS or in Evernote to change the cursor to a grey coloured block or vertical bar? Thanks.
  15. I am using Mavericks OS with Evernote on my Macbook Pro and have the following problem. Too often the cursor will stay as an i-beam even when I move it from a text location (where it should be this shape) out of the Evernote window up the the menus at the top of the screen, where it should change to a pointer. It will stay as an i-beam until I select one of the menus at which point it changes to the (appropriate) pointer. The only other application where I see this problem happening is Apple Mail. The cursor behaves properly in all other programmes that I use. This is not a knock-out blow to using Evernote but is an annoyance. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a similar issue and of course if they know a solution. Thanks, Kim
  16. Hi there, I've noticed that pasting some text into an Evernote Note window now leaves the cursor at the start of the text, rather than after the end of the text. I'm pretty sure the default behaviour used to be relocating the cursor to the end of the text and that this has just started happening. The version of Evernote is 5.5.0 on a Mac (10.8.5). Has anyone else seen this problem? Many thanks, Jason
  17. This bug happens when you are using multiple monitors with Evernote in fullscreen. If you are active on the primary display and evernote is open in fullscreen on the secondary display and you were previously editing a note the blinking cursor remains there. This can be misleading to the user where the user believes they are active on Evernote on the secondary display when they are not. eg. A user is using Evernote (in fullscreen) on one display and using Safari on the other. When the user goes to edit the note the typing will actually be happening on the safari window and not Evernote like the user may think. This is just throwing me off thought I would let you know.
  18. Hello guys, Ever since the last update, the default setting of where the cursor is, has changed. When I open a new note now, the cursor is at Tags. If possible I would like to change this back again to the Title of the note. Does anybody if this is possible?
  19. When creating a new note, I find it a little annoying, that the cursor automatically defaults to the "Note Content" field. I would rather it go to the "Note Title" field. Maybe its how my mind works, but when creating a text note, I first try to give it a title and then add some text to the Note Content field. In many cases my notes consist of just the Title with nothing ever added to the Content field. On a very related note, I don't like how the Note Title auto-populates to whatever is on my calendar at that moment or my current location. This only seems to happen when using the EN Android app on my phone and tablet.
  20. Evernote has two annoying features that drive me crazy as editing Evernote notes is almost as difficult as using Mail Note: 1. When editing a note, the UpArrow key will sometimes move to the beginning of the previous line although I was in the beginning of the line. May be it just LOOKed like I would be in the beginning of the line before pressing the key. This might be due to some invisible formatting in the lines. Thus, Evernote does not ALWAYS behave consistently by keeping the corresponding position. Because of this, I need to use trackpad to point where I intended to go after moving to the previous line. Even this post is easier to write as the arrows work as they should. 2. Anotherher annoying feature is that when bringing text from my Thunderbird, Evernote copies the formatting style from the email message. Can I switch off the style copying permanently?
  21. Using: Evernote for Android v4.0.1 Sometimes I come across sections of text deep in the body of notes which need editing. When I tap the pencil to enter edit mode, the cursor is inserted at the top of the note, and the screen, of course, starts there as well. Am I being dense, or is this a feature request? Can I enter edit mode, and have the cursor be inserted, at the current scroll position in the note body? It's a bummer to need to scroll all the way back down the note to find the place I was just at. Thanks for your time.
