What Happened to Location?
Thorz replied to Eli Gillespie's topic in Evernote Teams Technical Issues
@Jon/t @agsteele Why does Evernote remove features we have paid for without giving us any warning? Do they think that if they keep quiet, users won't complain or notice? The same happened with the ability to pinch-to-zoom in a note on mobile. They just decided to scratch this function before the summer. Then, some months after, released a half-baked “Note content size” function in settings that, when enabled, just breaks the use of all types of links in Evernote mobile. We that need zoom while using the product got screwed by this move. -

What Happened to Location?
Thorz replied to Eli Gillespie's topic in Evernote Teams Technical Issues
I was wondering the same about notes location today because this info was always present for notes created on iPhone before, and I couldn't find it anymore. @Eli Gillespie Did you receive an answer from support about this? I am afraid this feature was silently removed, on the same line as others that were killed this year like pinch-to-zoom for example. iPhone 15 Pro Max here with iOS 17.7. -
It looks like the behavior is very inconsistent. At times when you open a random note just for viewing it the updated date is changed. But many other times when you do this the date isn’t changed. Anyway, what made me start this post was not exactly this random bug that affect a small number of notes, it was that EN decided to arbitrarily change the updated date on hundreds of my notes without my intervention. It most probably happened after the reinstall of a Windows EN client around April 2024 and changing this back appears to be impossible now after what their support AI answered to me.

Just coming back to post that this bug is still there. If you haven't edited any note since you opened the app, it switches seamlessly between light and dark modes when the phone automatically switches, but if you edit any note and go out to the note list, Evernote stops following what the phone does and just stays stuck in the mode it is. The only way to make it change modes is by manually going into Settings > Dark Mode and chose what you want there, or closing Evernote from the iOS app-switcher and open it again.

I wanted to come back and update this topic with new info. As iOS users maybe already know (cannot comment for Android, but I wish it's the same there) BS implemented a new setting around August that lets you change the size of the font used to display notes. It is located under Settings > Notes > Note content size. Here you can chose between 2 modes: 1. Controlled by your phone settings (Match phone settings toggle ON, this is the default setting): This option changes the size of the fonts everywhere in the Evernote GUI, including the note list, settings, notebook page, etc. You have to make the changes you want from the Accessibility menu in iOS and then restart Evernote. I am not using this option, but have tested it and it works as expected. 2. Controlled by the menu in Evernote settings (Match phone settings toggle OFF): This option only changes the size of the font inside notes, it doesn't change the size of the rest of the Evernote GUI, like the note list. This is my favorite option. You can choose between 3 sizes Normal, Large & Extra Large. I am using Large and it feels ok for my eyes. This new setting doesn't offer the freedom we previously had with pinch-to-zoom inside notes, but it works as a band-aid to cover the wound. What I miss the most from pinch-to-zoom is the ability to edit text with the content zoomed-in, with a cursor always following the text input point, just like you have in Safari, Word and many other iOS apps. There is a caveat though, the use of any of these new options introduces a new bug in Evernote that has still not been corrected. You will lose the ability to tap and open any link inside your notes (internal Evernote links or external web links). This bug is explained in this thread: I agree that this workaround can work on specific situations, but it is extremely limited when you are in note edit mode as you lose control of the text insertion point, something you have with pinch-to-zoom. In addition, when using the iOS screen zoom you have to manually change the zoom focus in the note all the time with the three-finger gesture, this becomes very tiresome after a while.

I created a ticket and received an answer from the support AI: It appears that the changes in the 'updated' date metadata for your notes may be related to the significant update to Evernote's syncing infrastructure called RENT (Remaining ENTities), which was released in August 2024. (...) The RENT update ensures real-time synchronization across different accounts and devices, which might have led to the observed changes in the 'updated' dates of your notes around March-April 2024. Unfortunately, if the original update dates have already been altered, there is no way to revert them back to the original dates. So there you have it, it appears they have seen this issue before and it's something at their end. It sucks.

Thank you. Yes I am aware that doing those things changes the updated date, but I haven't done anything like that with my notes. I have seen the bug you describe, that at times just viewing a note changes the update date. This doesn't happens all the time but I have definitely seen it happening. It's frustrating, but it had never happened before with a huge number of my notes. I see hundreds that have got the update date changed to April 22, 2024

At some point this year, Evernote changed the “updated” date for lots of my old notes. There is really nothing to do with this now, the damage is already done, the update dates have already been changed, they are now lost, and I don't see any way to get back to the real ones. The notes' content and creation dates are thankfully intact. This is very noticeable, especially when viewing old notebooks I haven't touched in years. Many of the notes inside them now have updated dates of this year, something that is incorrect. Looking at many of these new dates, I guess whatever happened took place around March-April 2024. I don't know if it was something at their end on the database kept at the servers, or if it was something on one of the clients that changed the dates. I use Evernote on Windows, Mac, web, and iOS and my clients have been reinstalled several times this year trying to solve different issues. Reinstalling has involved the fresh downloading of all note content from the server at some point. Reinstalling Evernote shouldn't affect the notes' metadata though, I have done this many times before without consequences. I have checked the “note history” on some affected notes to see if the date changes were registered there, but as there was no content change, just the date metadata change, nothing was registered. Not all the notes were altered, there are still thousands that preserve the correct update dates. This is extremely annoying.

Don't hold your breath, at my end, support hasn't answered any of the 8 tickets created this year. It's a pity, but it is what it is.

I'm not against auto-update. I just came to comment about something I encountered today and saw the title of this thread. Today, the gust of updates on macOS was out of the normal. I've never seen something like this before with Evernote on Mac. The client received three update alerts, almost one after the other. Usually, I install the updates immediately when I see the alerts and don't let the message sit there waiting, so all these updates had to be released in the past 24 hours. Updates don't bother me, but today's frequency was up to the roof. When I see something like this, I wonder how much testing and QA is Bending Spoons running before releasing these patches into the production environment.

After your reports confirmed that you weren't having this issue, I decided to troubleshoot with the usual steps that sometimes work on iOS to fix some problems. I ended up erasing Evernote, rebooting the iPhone, and installing it again. Dark mode/light mode automatic switching are now working as before. Thank you for posting.

I guess it's for the same reason why millions use their phones for filming and taking pictures, but a more specialized group still prefers/needs to use an external device like a good camera. In my particular case, I prefer to use other apps when capturing audio from critical meetings or a course. They offer features that are important for me on those occasions that EN doesn't, for example, syncing of audio with notes. If I just needed to record good-quality audio with zero interruptions regularly, I definitely see the appeal of using an external device.
