    Wow, a new enthusiast ...

Anybody thinking about DevonThink (LOL) should think about this: 1) It is self hosted, the Database needs to reside on a Mac. A cloud service is only used for limited syncing to other devices. This means anybody operating DT is responsible for his own data, and access from the road means opening the own home network for access 2) It is Mac & iOS only 3) It relies heavily on code provided by MacOS. There are no plans to open it up to other platforms, like Windows or Android.

Who still says it my sort of app can easily give it a try. I think it is a valid offer, but it is for sure no "one size fits all", and it has a learning curve.

This is largely true—although it's worth pointing out that it now syncs via iCloud (CloudKit), which is quite reliable and the same way Apple Notes syncs.

And while it's true that the DB resides on a Mac, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. It's really a question of whether one wants full control over one's information—as well as full responsibility for data integrity, backups, etc.

One other thing: because DEVONthink is so deeply integrated with the Mac file system, it has the ability to index Finder folders and files, as opposed to simply importing them. This isn't generally necessary for text-based files—but it's indispensable when dealing with, say, a few thousand video files comprising several TB of data.

DT does support AppleScript for those that may want or need that.

Yes. Also, I have had great experience with the DT forums—their tech guys are lightning fast in responding, quickly acknowledge any bugs and fix them promptly, and have even helped me on several occaisions by writing/editing things like AppleScripts when I was stuck.

DT is an extremely full-featured program, with many features I will never use. There is a bit of a learning curve. But its features are amazing, and its handling of a wide variety of material is superb.

That said, as DT freely admits,  it has nowhere near the resources of EN—and the result is that some things, such as its web-clipping capability, are less smooth than EN's.

All in all, I prefer DT—even though the UI is definitely less simple, and having so many options and features does increase the learning curve to some degree, I have a lot more confidence in the company. They are extremely responsive and their people obviously love what they do—that's something money can't buy.

The maximum note size will be restricted to 25MB.  This means that larger notes can still be viewed but not changed anymore.

This makes sense—and is it true of other features?

For example, a Free account can't annotate PDFs—but presumably can still access old PDFs and their annotations?

Or for previous versions of Notes—will those be lost forever, or will they be accessible again if one re-subscribes?

    Appreciatively,

    Wm.

Comments like above are fairy telling, either people are really using an app for a purpose it was neither build for in first hand nor optimized (the EN scanner is in fact very weak in features and performance), or they are placing a misleading information about their real use of the app. The ability to scan something and export it as a pdf is for sure not a key function of EN, even if the app could be used to do this a a certain point in time. If you don‘t believe me, go to the EN web site and search for this „feature“ to be promoted in any way. Not there, no surprise.

Both approaches do not help to solve problems for yourself and other users in the forum, left alone develop the app further.

This seems somewhat disingenuous, given that there was an Evernote-branded Fujitsu ix-500 scanner sold for years—obviously the purpose of the device was to scan and store files electronically, with the native format being PDF.

    Indeed, you've commented on it:

And regardless, I hardly think people are making this up—why would they? I, for one, used to export my entire Evernote database as PDFs as an emergency backup. It's a bit hard to understand why this obviously sensible feature has been discontinued.

I had the same problem.  It was stuck on one bad note which I had to delete
One unknown note out of 13,000
I found the note eventually by repeatedly selecting half the notes and trying the export

    Thanks for this.

And that is insane—I never had this issue before, in 17 years (!) of using Evernote, and I have 12.5k notes.

What did it turn out was "bad" about the note? Just wondering if there's any possible way to find it other than your laborious method above...

No, this is not an Evernote feature
It can be scripted (after Evernote implements Applescript integration)

    >>Is it possible to then uninstall v 10 (without losing any data)?

The master version of our data is stored on the Evernote servers
If fully sync'd; uninstalling v10 will not lose any data

Thanks—good to know! But what do you suppose is going on here, then—I am unable to export my notes because the EN Legacy app is stuck on "Downloading content…" for more than 24 hours now:

    https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/131335-trying-to-use-evernote-legacy-to-export-notes-but-stuck-at-downloading-content…/

  7. I installed Evernote Legacy per suggestions, and am trying to export all my notes—but once I select a name and location for the enex file and start the process, a dialog box opens saying ""Downloading content…" It ran for 24 hours with little progress, so I tried to restart it today—and the same thing. How is this possible? I upgraded to the new version—but did that erase all the data somehow?

This is such a nightmare—maybe the worst ever upgrade to an app I've ever seen—and the fact that it's going to take 10-12 DAYS to even get a response from customer service is just mental…

    Thanks in advance!

Aaah - errr - yes, the forum is full of this stuff since they released v10.

The easiest solution is to go „back“ to the old client, now called „legacy“. I am only running this version, and wait until v10 supports my workflows (if ever ...).

Thanks. Is it possible to then uninstall v 10 (without losing any data)?

And is there some process to export all EN notes, with each folder an individual .enex file? I believe there used to be...

EN should really put this all in a sticky, since everyone seems bewildered by the total loss of essential features (like integration with Mac Services (right-click menu), "Share With", and other stuff completely essential to any note-taking program on a computer.

    Thanks in advance!

  9. This is huge mistake, if true—is it also why PopClip can no longer trigger EN?

I think it's finally time to cancel my subscription—I was a very early adopted of EN, and it's had it's ups and downs, but why they would remove this basic functionality and integration is beyond me.

What good is a note-taking app if I can't right-click text and add it to a note?

Yep, having a similar problem, except web clipping works fine for me, I only get this "

" error when trying to clip a PDF.

even after uninstall, delete extraneous files, reinstall Web Clipper. I'm running Safari 14.0.  Any of the Evernote folks ever respond in the forums?

I'm having the exact same problem with pdf clipping on Safari 14, returning the error:

    Clipper has encountered an error
    Unknown error occurred.
    EDAM/ENML_VALIDATION
Element type "embed" must be declared.

It also offered a link/button to copy the logs, which are:

Just to be clear, this doesn't happen on every pdf in Safari—just some. Example here:

    https://www.thelancet.com/pdfs/journals/ebiom/PIIS2352-3964(17)30164-0.pdf

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on here?

    Thanks!
