  1. I prefer the Applescript developed by Veritrope. It is well maintained and the developer is excellent, publishing a number of other scripts as well. It is well-written, and easy to modify to suit your needs. See Evernote Import Folder Using AppleScript from Veritrope.com
  2. LOL, you know that's a gross exaggeration Gaz. But we do need solid, basic, rich-text editing -- which is a far cry from word processing. EDIT: correct typo
  3. Really??? How can you have an effective Business system without a decent communications? I'm pretty sure they (EN) have advertised EN Business as a great collaboration tool. Just do a google on "evernote business collaboration" and you'll get lots of hits.
  4. Well done David! Thanks for posting the Microsoft Windows UX Design Guidelines. I do hope someone will pass this on to the EN Dev team. So many developers today have forgotten that following these guidelines is one of the key ingredients to making the app intuitive. They seem more concerned with looking cool and being different than they do with actual usability. BTW, I'm not sure if it is in the guidelines, but CTRL+W has been a shortcut for closing a window for many, many years.
  5. Gaz, that's the beauty of the clipboard. It provides a means to exchange data in standard formats for that platform. It is the responsibility of the app which pastes data to the clipboard to put in in one or more of these standard formats. Plain text, Rich text and HTML are three of the very standard clipboard formats. Each app does NOT have to know or care about the internal format of any other app. To be compliant with Windows standards and Mac standards, each app should support that platforms standard clipboard formats. BTW, I don't know what you mean by "I think Evernote does its job when translating faithfully(ish) from dozens of different display formats to its own note structure". Evernote does NOT do this. It simply pulls data off the clipboard that is in one of the standard formats. Even the capture of web pages is done using a standard format: HTML. I have never seen the problems that Evernote has with using the clipboard in other apps.
  6. Gaz, I agree with the OP. This is really a common, standard feature amongst all apps I know of that support rich text. When you COPY from Evernote to another app that supports rich text, the formatting shown in Evernote is often not retained. While it could be the other apps problem, I have observed other apps that support paste of rich text with out issue from every other app except Evernote. It seems to me that Evernote is NOT putting the right information and/or the right format onto the clipboard when you do a copy. BTW, it has NOTHING to do with whether or not Evernote is a layout/design tool. Evernote supports rich text, and therefore it should handle the copy and paste of rich text properly.
  7. elux, I strongly agree. I have been pointing out features found in EN Win but NOT in EN Mac for a long time. Thanks for reminding us of this.
  8. Find and Replace is sorely needed when using Evernote to support Projects and Business tasks. Often times, one may start out with one identifier (acronym) for something, then change or spell it different later. It would be soooooooooo helpful to have F&R, at least within a Note. IF Evernote really wanted to shine, then you could ALSO make it work across a selection of Notes. F&R has been in even simple text editors forever, so the technology must be well known.
  9. I know this was a Windows thread, but for any Mac lurkers, CMD+ and CMD- work to increase/decrease selected text size. Technically, you can actually just use the "=" key as in CMD= instead of CMD+ since you do NOT have to press the shift key to get the "+" in order to increase size.
  10. Chris, I have found the AppleScript Import to work very well, and it has never been broken for more than a few days. For those few days, it is easy enough to drag-n-drop the file from the Mac Finder to either an existing EN Note, or to the EN icon in the Mac dock.
  11. This is a very old debate within the Evernote community. Suffice it to say both hierarchical and flat (tags) systems have their advantages. Perhaps more important is that different people can think very differently. What is difficult to some is easy and logical to others. Personally I find the combination of hierarchical organization and cross-cutting tags to be the most powerful approach. If Evernote would just add a minor enhancement to their search engine to include child tags in a search for a parent tag, then the Evernote hierarchical tags would be extremely powerful. For example: adding a plus symbol to a parent tag name would tell Evernote to include any of the sub-tags in the search: tag:HW+ would mean the same as: any: tag:HW tag:Computer tag:Router tag:hub where "Computer", "Router", and "Hub" are sub-tags to "HW". Currently we have to apply both the parent tag and the child tag to a Note in order to find all notes whose child tag is a sub-tag of the parent.
  12. Here's an even better way on the Mac, using a Mac Automator Service. See Copy file or folder path to the clipboard in Mac OS X Lion Then, after you have the file path on your clipboard (from above), do this in your Evernote Note: select the text you want to use for the link, press CMD+K, enter "file://" and then paste (CMD+V). Click "OK" You should end up with the link looking something like "file:///Users/<YourMacLoginName>/Documents/MyFile.pdf"
  13. You might consider creating just one Notebook called "Clients", and then using Tags to designate each client. I have used this approach with much success. All of my client-specific Tags have a prefix of "CLI." and then a short ID. Anytime I want to apply a client tag, or filter on one, I can just type "CLI." and EN provides a popup list of clients. Hope this gives you some ideas.
  14. I disagree. It may be "smart" from a technical point of view, but not of a users point of view. There is very little correlation between the image size and what image is the most important, or most relevant, to the user. On top of that, the thumbnail often crops the image in the middle, making it almost unrecognizable. Don't see anything "smart" about this. Choosing the first image whose width and height are both greater than that used for borders would be "smart", as well a give the user control over which image is used for the thumbnail.
  15. I think this is a case of the programmers trying to be cool with a "clever" algorithm, yet they did not have a good understanding of the end-user's needs/perspective. We have tried several times to convince the EN team that the current selection process does not work very well, but they don't seem to want to hear it.
  16. For those running the Mac OS, you can just drag the file from the Finder to a Browser address bar and it will enter the file path. You can then copy this and paste into the Evernote Add Link (CMD+K) dialog.
  17. I think the OP is asking how to enter a link to a file on his/her local hard drive, not to another EN Note. This would be useful.
  18. JB, thanks for sharing this "announcement". I had not seen nor heard of anything along these lines. Sounds good. But it seems like a complete reversal of CEO Phil Libin's statements previously that Evernote was and always will be only a "consumer", end-user app, and that he had been down the path of "Enterprise software" and doesn't want to go there again. Did Evernote publish a blog on this? If so, I missed it.
  19. I like your requests. They highlight some of the shortcomings of the Evernote Sharing feature. IMO, Evernote Sharing is really "Sharing Lite", and doesn't come close to providing the features and tools needed for serious collaboration. So, you may want to consider other apps for collaboration. Here is a quote from a similar thread: Evernote sharing is NOT ready for mission critical collaboration
  20. I had not heard of MyNotesKeeper before, but after a quick review of their website it looks like an impressive program. I do like the hierarchical, collapsible folder list in the left panel. So what brings you to Evernote? Are you switching to Evernote from MyNotesKeeper? If so, what Evernote features do you find compelling? Unfortunately, Evernote has resisted all suggestions that they provide a hierarchical folder/subfolder or Notebook/SubNotebook organization. It doesn't look like it is in the cards for the foreseeable future.
  21. This is not currently possible. One workaround is to create the table in another app (like MS Word), copy the table (note the file) from Word and paste into the Evernote note.
  22. Evernote is not well suited to be used as a Code Snippet manager. There are a number of other apps (Windows, Mac, Web) that are dedicated to this function, and do it much better. While Evernote can store the text of your code, it can have problems in doing so reliably since your code is actually embedded in HTML like code. So, you may be better off with another app for this purpose.
  23. I would find sorting of text useful. Sorting is not particularly a "word processing" function. In fact, in the early days of WP, there was no sort feature. It is more of a text or list function. Evernote does provide for list support. I submit it is a fairly common need to sort a list after having spent some time writing/development. Sorting text is a well known (ancient) technology, and I can't image that it would be a big burden on development. IAC, nobody asked for a full-blown word processor.
  24. Most of my thumbnails are so illogical that I pretty much just ignore them in the Snippet view. It would be very cool to right-click on the Snippet View Note, and select "Choose Thumbnail". EN could present a selection of images in thumbnail size for the user to pick from. It would seem that EN has all of the data it needs to do this in a small popup window, since the Note images are all files which EN knows for each Note.
  25. I would imagine that Evernote already has the algorithm for merging Notes based on their design in the EN Win and EN Mac platforms. The only real difference with iOS is the I/O.
