hi. welcome to the forums! as i understand it, all notes are backed up every few hours (8?) and there are note histories (assuming your note is more than 8 hours old). if you are a premium user, you can see the old versions. if you are not, you can upgrade ($5 per month / $45 per year) or contact support and see what they can do for you. it is entirely possible that they have a backup and can get it to you. if you have been doing time machine backups (i think you ought to be doing this at least daily -- storage is so inexpensive these days, and all you have to do is plug it in) then you can easily go back and find the note content on your own. just do a spotlight search (i prefer the app houdahspot) using the keywords you know are present in the note.

hi. welcome to the forums. i made this request for a narrower view a few times in the past as well. i tend to open a bunch of notes in their own windows and hide the left panel to get as much on the screen as i can. but, 13" gets used up pretty quickly. i really like the suggestion of tabs. several people have made it, but the idea hasn't gained traction yet.

yes, there is native support for viewing pdfs, and the viewer appears if we click on a pdf. as evernote already takes a bit long to display my notes, my own preference would be for evernote to work on further speeding up and streamlining the app. also, unless you have your pdfs in an offline notebook, evernote would have to download each one as well. that takes several seconds already. i'll be interested to hear what the develors have to say.

hi. well, i guess we have different impressions of the ipad. i could be wrong, of course. at any rate, it would be nice to have a choice.

hi mic. i don't know the answer to your question, but my guess would be that such a feature would slow the ipad down. it would be nice if we had that option (as we do on the desktop versions).

What do you mean? People say "I think there is something wrong with adding more levels" and you conclude that it's not a disagreement? Or that no one said that there is something wrong so no one is disagreeing? You used a paradoxical form of syntax, do you see it? We can interpret the meaning in both ways (the word "by" is ambiguous). I'll just comment the end : if 3 millions or even 3 billions of people are fine with a system, it does not mean for me that this system is valid or better than an other. No, that's why I said it was just a picture. Can we see a dev here? How can we submit an idea and see them admiting/rejecting it? Thanks jefito, for your patience even in my darkest moment. There is not enough light because, IMO, the approach of hierarchical tree VS tags implicate a real complex questioning about our way of thinking. It's about brain, it's about thought, it's about cognition, semantic, etc. My conviction is human are uncomfortable with thinking/calculating and always prefer the easiest way. Our time is proving it, by deploying much more technology based on an irrational structure than a rational one. Everybody adulate Search Engines, Tags, etc, and people have a serious problem with the "traditionnal method" of building theories, models, hierarchical, pathes. But for me, the only method wich belongs to human is unfortunatly the rational one : we can't cheat, we can't run away from it, it always came back. That's why I ask you to bring here some screenshots of your tag lists, and why I pointed the fact that => imo this list as to be, soon or later, displayed in an ergonomic way ! You can't avoid it ! You can't watch your tag list like you watch a thousand words written on little pieces of paper, chaotically scattered on your desktop, and select them (for a search function or to attribute them to a note) in a mysterious way you don't want to know neither modelize => The modelizing, the gathering, is called a rational model : concepts are gathered BECAUSE of the meaning, of the PATH you CREATE. Just keep in mind : 2 Systems : rational VS irrational, tree VS tags Paradoxical where the 2 systems are complementary. It has been realized before : it's called Hard links. Moreover we're talking about a little improvment of a yet existing feature. Now, here is how I see it : We can merge the tree and the tag : categories of the tree ARE the tags ! When you create a cat/tag in a branch, if it already exists in an other branch => it is connected. Ticking a checkbox near a cat/tag, or typing his name on the search function will display only these sub-folders, in their respective branches. When you add a note in such a cat/tag/sub-folder, if there is many occurences of the tag, it ask you if you want to connect the note with the other tags (you can select eah one). Extra : We could have several sets of tree, to display the tree in different orders of sorting, depending on different path we create in our mind. I know what you're thinking : "he does not understand that tags actually avoid this kind of autistic conception and laborious work". Well, what you perhaps don't understand is the interest of doing it I guess. Hard link model is something much more intelligent and complete. Seriously, can you give me a screenshot of your tag list ! i don't see the paradox in what i said. i guess i just don't get it. sorry. about all i can add is to say that sure, it would be nice to have more sub-levels (for people who organize using notebooks). but, we don't have them. and, i am not even sure you need them. i appreciate your requesting it, and i see that it is very important to you, but it isn't a feature that i am terribly enthusiastic about myself.

It sounds like experience has taught you different lessons than it has taught me. It is certainly your prerogative to persist in the belief that 1) developers don't listen or just pretend to if they don't agree with you, 2) showing respect to others is less effective than ridiculing them, and 3) I am mad/angry about your posts. I think I will have to disagree with you about all three! I am not sure you will find much debate here about your points. I don't think anyone is disagreeing with your main point by saying that there is something wrong with adding more sub-levels to the notebooks. Rather, I think I hear them saying they are fine with the current system.

Hi Romarain. I appreciate that you are passionate about your position, but I wonder if people (including the developers) understand what you are saying, have put thought into the product they have devoted their careers to, and reached a different conclusion. In other words, rather than saying everyone who disagrees with you is wrong because they suffer from some kind of deficiency (humans, lazy, whatever), you may want to consider the possibility that they just don't agree with you. Regarding your point about how easy this is, in my experience, even small changes with a program can cause havoc. And, I only program on a single platform. Evernote has to match everything across eight major platforms, and they have millions of people depending on them to do it well. So, I think as users we certainly ought to suggest things (it is great that you are), but we also ought to show some respect to the developers for the hard work they have done, and refrain from ridiculing them. There are people at the other end of your post. Besides, they might be a little more amenable to your suggestions if you rhetorically hug them instead of kick them

i get it that you want hierarchical organization, and you don't see why evernote doesn't have more options available, but i think you know that the people who developed an app adopted by millions of people around the world probably have a fair bit of intelligence. they are, after all, the only corporation i know about that has a robot with lasers in charge. true story. i think they have chosen a different model of organization than you are suggesting. that's all. people have suggested hierarchies since i started using evernote years ago, so they are aware of the concept. you can google around to find out more about why they do what they do. maybe it will change in the future, but at least for now, evernote is what it is. it's always good to get suggestions for features (i think), but take a look at the links i posted and see if those don't appeal to you.

hi. welcome to the forums! thanks for posting on this topic. personally, i use no hierarchies (no notebooks or tags), so it isn't a concern for me, but i know it is of great interest to many users. i don't know if evernote plans to add more hierarchical possibilities to notebooks. in the current system, there are some workarounds (i actually prefer some of these to traditional folder hierarchies).

Heh. Options are for developers who are afraid of making choices... Balderdash! (yes, I know who you are quoting) Developers have to make choices one way or another when they design the default UI. That reflects their decisions, and if they did a good job (Evernote usually does), then most users will never have to mess around with any settings. Giving users the ability to customize their experience is a choice as well, and it is pretty rare that I hear someone complaining about being able to do what they want to do Taking away the user's ability to customize their experience, or deciding not to offer a feature is a choice as well, and I think a lot of customers complain when they cannot do what they want to do! It is especially painful when a feature Evernote developed to perfection is removed or radically altered, when a toggle would have satisfied everyone

I like BNF's idea. Even though I am not terribly concerned about deleting stuff, since I never empty my trash, I do accidentally modify the wrong note on occassion. Early drafts of things get re-worked, and then I realize that I had a newer draft already, and I am wasting my time. Not only that, but I have ruined the early draft by messing around with it (deleting things here and there, moving stuff around, etc.). The scary thing is that I sometimes reproduce the same stuff! But, not always It would just be nice to know that old stuff is locked. Unlocking is no big deal compared to the hassle of recovering stuff. And, you know I am going to say it: you could give us the option to toggle this auto-lock on/off

LaTeX is pretty nerdy, and probably only relevant for a small number of users, but it would be very cool if Evernote could provide support. I could say the same for MultiMarkdown as well

no way to do this on the ipad, and i imagine it would be somewhat difficult to implement. do you know of any other apps that enable users to merge files? if so, this might give the developers a concrete direction.

i certainly wouldn't have anything against it, though i wonder if our ram / processors could handle a search of everything (if evernote got it, then so would everyone else). i do pretty much everything on the iphone/ipad in evernote, though, so i don't see much point in using spotlight. in fact, to be honest, i think i might have used spotlight twice. siri gets about the same amount of love. i wonder if i am missing something here...

How many have you sent?

50 email per day limit? it is 250 for premium users. i wouldn't do auto-forwarding, because of the limit, the 100,000 note total limit, and the accumulation of *****. in my experience, most emails are things to do now, and only a handful each week have lasting value.

the more parity we have the better! my priorities would probably be something like: 1. ability to link notes 2. ability to change font style and text size (especially useful for copy/pasting) 3. ability to edit all of the metadata, including dates

yep. you never know, and it never hurts to ask. links, though, are pretty widely supported across platforms inside apps and, of course, in browsers. this is just a guess, but i think outlining is tricky beyond the basics that you can get with something like <ul> or <li> in html. nevermind any of the evernote app-specific obstacles that might exist. if evernote can pull it off, it will put them well ahead of a lot of competitors. if not, i'll be ok. as suggested above, there is always copy / paste from other apps if complicated outliing is really necessary.

I totally agree. One of the things I like about Evernote is that it doesn't have feature bloat and it does what it does well.

Not to poo poo this topic, but whatever the usefulness of having this kind of outline functionality, I think it's pretty unlikely that this kind of functionality would work across platforms, so I don't see it happening. Anyhow, I think it is fair to say that a lot of people want Evernote to do outlining
