Wow amazing, thanks so much. I just encountered the exact same problem and it was doing my head in! I followed your suggestion to use a really simple password and that did the trick!

I understand that preferences menu is no longer showing after you updated your Evernote. I just want to add my frustration. Just updated my Evernote on Windows and no Preferences menu anymore... !!?? I can't turn off the spell check. This is annoying !!!!!!!
