  1. Check out the new Demand Sync option in the latest beta. If you don't put notes on your local machine, that avoids a lot (if not all) of the issues brought up here.

If you have a Pin or Password, your files are still sitting on your local hard drive. So the IT guy who could reset your password and open up Evernote, can presumable access any of your local files.

Perhaps what you're requesting is for your Evernote database to be encrypted separately (and with a password). In which case I'd guess is a lot do work.

Same thing for the mobile devices. If someone has physical access to your unlocked device, they probably can get to your local files.

  2. This is short sighted.   I can boot ANY windows PC when the owner is away to lunch with a Boot DVD like Hiren, Ultimate BootCD, and many more, get past the login password for windows TRIVIALLY, and then I would have access to ALL the notes on that person's EverNote account.   I find this unacceptable and just plain amateur.   It's no different from saying that you should not need a login for your Banking app, since "If locking the device doesn't protect the contents,  another password won't help."    Um, Sorry.  Plain WRONG.

I was seriously considering buying EverNote to use at my company for HR notes, Payroll notes, Confidential project notes, etc.   All serious information that needs to be protected just like banking info.

Are the people in control of EverNote really this naive?

I guess I will have to keep looking for a similar product that takes the security of user data seriously.

It is Evernote with a lowercase "n"

  3. Hi,

Please evernote can you add a password/code function to the desktop version?

I love and use evernote daily. I'd be lost without it in fact. I use it for many things, this includes sensitive information that I wouldn't want work or family or friends to see. Passwords and such. Quite often my laptop may be borrowed to work purposes to use a program or fix something, or leisure for friends to watch a film on the weekend. I can easily sign out of other private accounts such as my work logins, hotmail or facebook, but my only worry when I'm handing my laptop over to be borrowed is that others can look in my evernote if they wanted to. This gives me anxiety.

My only option is not to store this sensitive info in there but this is very annoying as the adding unnecessary complexity to the way I store things - need multiple apps etc

It's a basic add on to do an optional password on the desktop version. - Or please add function to password protect notes would be very helpful.

    Please add this feature.

    Thanks.

Another point is that all of your Evernote files are on the file system. So even if you could lock someone out of the Evernote program with a password, they can still get to the content of your account. That's a bit out of Evernote's hands.

  4. I have been having this problem and it is getting worse and worse.  I get spinning wheels and "not responding" at least once every 15 seconds.  I often look up from the keyboard and see that I have been typing ahead of Evernote by a full sentence.  There's nothing indicative of a problem in the activity log.  Running on Windows 7 64-bit pro with 8 GB of RAM.  Perfmon shows the CPU, memory, and disk utilization are no where near maxed out.  Sometimes the only program I'm running is Evernote and it still happens.

Performance began to deteriorate with the major release of Evernote that happened late last year (October? the release that introduced the new "flat" looking user interface). Scrolling became jerky.  But the freezing problem is more recent.  It is happening so often that Evernote is becoming unusable.

It's too bad.  My life is in Evernote.  I used to recommend it to everyone.  Now I don't.

I would try opening a Support ticket. If you know how to get to the Debug Menu, I would suggest trying Optimize Database

  5. On my laptop, delete is adjacent to the arrow keys, and I'm constantly "accidentally" deleting notes. Since there's no visual indication that I've done so, more times than not, I don't even know that I should be heading to Trash to "undelete."

And the fact that emptying the trash (at some future point) does remind me to review what I'm doing, it often contains hundreds of deleted notes. I'm supposed to make time to stop and read every one each time, so the developers don't have to take the time to make confirmation an option?

That's a diabolical design oversight in a product that's supposed to help us safely preserve "everything."

I understand why some might not like it, and absolutely understand why some of us must have it (especially with some keyboard layouts). Make it an option, please!

Is this a default configuration? I imagine this causes much of a headache everywhere...

  6. Howso'mever - my point wasn't (entirely) the personal angst, but the issue that Evernote does close you down rather finally once you get to the magic 1024 megabytes. Please Evernote, can we have a bit more warning and a bit more assistance for muppets like me when the usage limit kicks in?

Noted, I believe the Mac client does a better job than the Windows Client. I'll review both clients and see when we can figure something out and schedule it in

  7. Howdy everyone!

I love reading this thread because it hits all the pain-points I've had acquainting myself with the Evernote rich-text-only paradigm.

I've been using mindmapping tools for almost a decade (FreeMind anyone?) and found myself still using it most when I had serious contemplation to do or needed to take a lot of notes really quickly in way that was legible immediately afterwards. Because I'm now such a hardcore Evernote user, using a different mindmapping tool for any note taking felt like I was complicating my life more than I should. Frankly, all of the mindmapping tools that claim to have Evernote integration suck and integrate with Evernote in such an awkward way it's no better than just using FreeMind+Dropbox and occasionally attaching PDF or PNG representations of my mindmaps and hoping OCR would help me later.

I came to the juncture of asking myself whether it was worth just foregoing mindmapping altogether to keep my note-taking life simple.

As a developer, I was intrigued by the problem and set out to fix it. And I think I have fixed this mindmapping+Evernote problem now.

I'll be releasing my app for the world to use in the coming weeks but I'm looking for beta testers right now. I'd like Evernote users ranging from very-little-to-no mindmapping experience and people like gazumped in this thread who seem to be dedicated mindmapping connoisseurs.

If you'd like to participate in the beta of my Evernote mindmapping tool, please contact me via email: jicksta at gmail dot com.

When I launch the tool publicly, I'll also announce it in this thread.

    Thanks!

Make sure you talk to the guys who manage the trunk!

  8. Linux desktop share is only 2% right?

But look on the people behind that 2%, most of them are advanced, techie intelligent users who are more likely to use Evernote than the 80% grandmas and grandpas out there that use windows machine because they had no choice.

I'd expect EN at least to support Nixnote and make sure it's development continues.

Thinking twice before purchasing premium account.

I think that's where I disagree. Not that Linux users aren't techie intelligent users, but I think it is incorrect to assume techies are much more likely to use Evernote than grandmas and grandpas.
