  1. Does anyone have any insight or can point me to documentation on EN functions within MacOS’ Shortcuts app?

I used the app to create a Shortcut to create a new Evernote note.  This may sound inconsequential - but when run off Siri, it is a way to create an Evernote note while I am hiking or driving.  I simply say, “Hey Siri, create an Evernote note”.  I then get asked for the note’s title followed by the thought I want to record.

This is all really neat but now I want to append to that note.

Fortunately, there is an Append function in the EN library within Shortcuts.  However, rather than trying to remember the exact wording of the note’s title (an input to the Append function), I want Shortcuts to use the last note created.  To do so, I was hoping to leverage EN’s Get function.

I just can’t find documentation on the EN functions within MacOS’s Shortcuts app.

    Thanks in advance.

  2. From my selfish seat, I'd like to see sort and column specifications saved with a saved search.

Different repeated searches that generate list views deserve different columns and sorting.  Saved searches save the filter.  Saving the columns and sort with the filter is not difficult and easy to test.

(And yes, I submitted this request via Feedback@evernote.com.)

  3. While I appreciate the frequent bug fix updates, I would like to see an EN v11.  Wouldn’t you?

Also, for how I use EN (my second brain and GTD), I don’t place a high value on AI with EN.  Sure, there is a cool factor but as far as what I would like in EN in terms of new feature/functions…AI is not tops on my list.

    Thoughts?

  4. Thanks for this post as I too have that dot.

All web searches assuming it was coming from a Safari extension function has turned up nothing.  Within managing extensions, I've turned the extension off and on again, and have toggled the Private Browsing checkbox - all to see no change in the dot appearance.

As Don0819 says, the clipper appears to work just fine.

...I just would like to know what it means.  :)

  5. While I agree with the comments that it depends on what you are using it for, I contend that regardless of the use, I would not consider a note taking app unless it has:

    • Numerous ways of getting content into the app (e.g. web clipper)
    • A robust tagging mechanism to promote notes in many locations
    • A feature rich search function to find that needle of a note in your haystack pile of notes.

OneNote is poor, to say the least, at tagging and search compared to EN.

On a tangent, the debate in EN circles on when to use notebooks vs tags illustrates the great flexibility with EN as there is no right or wrong answer.

  6. Hello.

I've been an EN user for a number of years and have experienced its growing pains and maturing as a product.  I've configured it for GTD purposes and find it works more than well.  Sure, there are feature/functions I'd like to see added (saved column/sort with saved searches for one) but find its ability to collect AND my ability to retrieve information most useful.

So, I don't understand the bad press I see for the product in my news feeds - in terms of its functionality.  I'm not talking about the business of or around EN (e.g. pricing).

I've looked at alternatives - Notion, Obsidian, OneNote (whose use of tags is pitiful!) - and don't see how I can (currently) do better with getting information in and just as importantly, getting it out.

Can you share what feature/functions is lacking in EN that makes people leave EN?  Or is it the business side of the product that is turning people off (e.g. pricing)?

  7. I can't help but think, "Of all the feature/functions (f/f) they are gong to add to EN, it is AI to clean up notes?"  What about looking at what the user community is asking for?

On the other there's a quote by Steve Jobs, "People don't know what they want until you show it to them."

Ultimately, I guess what I really would like to see is a few of the highly requested f/f added along with a "one more thing" - the one I didn't know what I wanted.

  8. Hello everyone. Is the 'any' advanced search operator limited to just text comparisons or can I compare other advanced search operators?

For example, I know <any: A B> returns notes with A or B in it.  However, can I do <any tag:A tag:B> to return notes with Tag A or Tag B?

Yes, I have the Personal level so Booleans are not in my version.

I've tried this on my pile of notes and I am not understanding the results I see which is why I am posting the question.

    Thanks in advance.

  9. I don't know about you but I am very much looking forward to seeing new features from EN under the new owners.

I'm confident there was a feature/function queue when Bending Spoons did their due diligence before purchasing EN.  And I would bet that queue was at least influenced by the many great suggestions from us - the customers.  Add to that the increased competition in this genre...

So, I'm looking forward to the next EN release..

  10. Confirmation request...

When adding something to EN on mobile, is the difference between "Camera" and "Scan" the OCR'ing of the scan (assuming your account offers OCR'ing)?

    Question...

Assuming the above is true, can a captured image that was not OCR'd originally be submitted to EN for OCR'ing?

Please share. Would love any hints, tips, and short cuts, you use. New to Rocketbook just purchased new fusion plus for 2023 organization

The best tips that come to mind are:

    • I title each page when I begin taking notes.  I place ## both before and after the title.  This results in EN using what’s between the ## as the title of the note.
    • In addition, I put the date under the title.  I do this because the when I bring over RB pages into EN is not the same day I created the note.  As a result, the date/time stamp in EN is not the same day I created the note.
    • I also *try* to write clearly as RB transcribes the page and brings over the translation to EN.
      • It is this translation that RB adds value.  While EN does OCR scans, it does not put the translation in the note body resulting in the inability to select the text.  So, to increase the accuracy of RB’s transcripts of my notes, again, I *try* to write neatly.
    • I bought a supply of pens because when they run out of ink - boom!  They are out of ink.
    • I bought a cover on Amazon so I can keep papers with the RB if/when needed and with the pen holder, I never have to search for the pen.
    • I bought a water brush to deal with small erasing as opposed to erasing the whole page.

  12. An often question asked when using Evernote is, "When do I use a Notebook and when do I use a Tag?"

Allow me to state an underlying principal regarding these two Evernote facets and how that principal shaped how I configured my Evernote structure.  I do so only to share what works for me in case it can help others in this community.

There is a one-to-one relationship between a Note and a Notebook.  This means a Note can only be in one Notebook.

There is a one-to-many relationship between a Note and Tags.  This means a Note can have many Tags.

Since I use Evernote for my version of "Getting Things Done" (aka GTD), Notebooks represent the "state" of a Note as a Note cannot be in more than one state.  And my GTD setup has Notes in one of three states - Action Pending, Action Completed, and Reference Material.  So, I only have three Notebooks (for my 4K and growing Note population).

I use Tags to qualify the Notes.  For Notes that do not have any action associated with them, Tags are used to describe the reference material (which can be multiple Tags).  For Notes related to actions, the Tags indicate what the Note is about (which can be multiple Tags), what kind of action is needed, the priority of the action, and when the action will be addressed in non-specific terms (e.g. Now, Next, Soon, Later, Someday).  Reminders provide specific timing if needed.

This structure generates a data repository that Evernote's search capabilities, filters, saved searches, shortcuts, Home page, and widgets provide me with a work compass I use everyday and a filing cabinet filled with reference material useful to me today and in the future.

I use Rocketbook linked to Evernote to add free hand content.

I use Rocketbook for a good deal of my general note taking. I find writing notes much easier and faster compared to using current electronic tools.  The integration of Rocketbook with Evernote has been great.  The one time purchase of the reusable notebook along with easily found and inexpensive erasable ink pens makes the Rocketbook/Evernote combination hard to beat for my needs.

Going one step further along the praise path, what I find what sets Evernote apart from its competition is the numerous ways of getting data in and the extensive search functionality in getting data out.

On the other hand, my Evernote wish list focuses on formatting of search results (e.g. saved searches with their own column/sort/filter spec) and more flexible export options.

Ctrl+A on my windows desktop will select all the items in that list and I can copy/ paste (in Legacy at least) any or all selected lines into a spreadsheet.

Thanks @gazumpedfor the tip.  However, on my EN version 10.49.4-mac-mas-public (459555), it doesn't work.  I can select all the items in a list and I can Edit/Copy them.  However, the copy does not place them in the Clipboard as pasting to an external container like Excel, does not paste the list.  The paste produces what was last put into the Clipboard - which isn't the content from the EN list.

is there a reason Evernote should re-invent Excel for users' convenience?  (In the latest subscriber versions by the way you can view the content of an Excel spreadsheet from a note to which it is attached.)

My apologies for not being clear.  I am not looking for reinventing Excel.  I was trying to explain my desire to have an export option of a list of notes (which can be seen a a data table) to be compatible for Excel importing.  Your ability to copy/paste is not something I cannot do in my version.  My export options are limited to EN and PDF formats and when I am exporting more than one note, the multiple notes are exported as individual notes.

A section of this forum exists for suggestions like this to be voted on by other users - the more votes,  the more likely it is to be adopted

I have provided my suggestions via the Share Feedback mechanism I have available in my version.

I also use a third-party app called Filterize which maintains my 'to do' dashboards.

Whoa!  I did not know of this and first glance has me thinking how I can take advantage of it.  Thanks for sharing.

  15. Hello everyone.

I use EN for GTD purposes and I consider this in alignment with the EN's "second brain" moniker. I ask because as a second brain, I find certain functionality missing that I consider fundamental.

Now before you consider this an EN rant, it is not.  I like EN and use it all the time.  I am not bothered by what others may consider a nuisance like extra clicks to get to a function. However, functionality that I consider fundamental can be summed up in one word - output.

I see EN as a database with lists being the equivalent to a report.  So why, I ask myself, am I limited to saved searches that all use the same column/sort spec?  Why can't each saved search have their own set of columns, arranged in their own way, with the items in the list filtered and sorted specific to that saved search?  I think this would greatly increase the value of saved searches and therefore, the product overall.

Along the same line of output, I don't understand why exporting EN data is limited to single notes.  Is there a reason why lists cannot be exported?  And why is the export limited to EN and PDF formats?  Since I look at EN as a database, I am thinking of at least an Excel output.  I understand there may be limits due to the content within the note, but still, I think even with the limitations, exporting lists would increase the value of the product.

Taken one step further, I look at combining custom column/sort spec based saved searches with Excel-based list exports as a true winning feature.

Finally, yes, I have submitted these suggestions via Feedback - numerous times.

I am open to thoughtful responses.

  16. Thanks for the advice.

My subscription is via the App Store.  What is the impact of re-installing directly from EN?  Is it a moot question as there is no impact?  Will I need to forgo updates from the App Store and just update via EN directly?  Or is there any other aspect that I am just don't know about?
