  1. Synching of Evernote Legacy on my Windows 7 32-bit computer, which hasn't been working for many days, is now working again. Those with a similar problem might try their luck and see if it's also working for them.
  2. 6.25.2.9198 works fine on Windows 7 32-bit. The only changes I've noticed from the penultimate version are the gray icon and the branding as Evernote Legacy.
  3. Shane, it'd be nice if your installer checked to see if the user was running Windows 10 BEFORE it blew away the existing Evenote installation. I'm on Windows 7 32-bit, and your installer deleted my entire Evernote installation AND THEN decided it couldn't install Evernote 10 (giving only a cryptic message that no appropriate file-association was set), leaving me with NO EVERNOTE AT ALL. Fortunately, I'd set a Windows restore point before doing the install, but sheesh.
  4. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, everyone! I've updated my instructions at the comments in the EN-color.txt file. The new instructions are now the VERY FIRST message in this thread: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/topic/86645-solution-to-not-having-white-background-for-notes
  5. Hi, @Shagun. You don't get SFK to run the batch file; it's the other way around, you run the batch file and it in turn runs SFK (a batch file is a batch -- a bunch, a group -- of commands you want the computer to execute in the order they're listed in the batch file from first line to last). Hare's a draft of the bullet-list instructions you've asked for. NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD DOWNLOAD EN-color.txt AGAIN FROM THIS MESSAGE, as I've made some changes to it (mostly adding extra documentation inside that file, but also a couple of important things). Once a few people have tried this procedure out and given it the thumbs up or told me what to correct, I'll move them into the first message in the thread. ==== Provided as is with no warranty of any kind / use at your own risk. For use with Evernote for Windows only. This procedure changes the on-screen display of the background color of Evernote notes (without actually altering the note in any way) and also changes the on-screen display of the background color for the note list as well as making the highlight color and divider lines in the note list contrast well with the new background color. [ * ] First, don't forget to set the Dark theme for Evernote's Left Panel display -- the only part of a night mode that Evernote's developers actually give Windows users. You can do that at this setting inside the Evernote client: Tools | Options | General | Left panel theme | Default (dark) [ * ] Initiate an Evernote sync by clicking the Sync icon in the Evernote tool bar and wait until it is complete. [ * ] Exit the Evernote program (File menu, and then Exit). [ * ] Also close the Evernote tray icon (the elephant symbol) by right-clicking on it and selecting "Quit Evernote". [ * ] Download the file EN-color.txt attached to this message. [ * ] Rename EN-color.txt to EN-color.bat (Windows may give you a warning about the danger of changing a file type; ignore the warning). [ * ] Place EN-color.bat in you Evernote program folder, which is probably "c:\Program Files\Evernote\Evernote" but might be "C:\Program Files (x86)\Evernote\Evernote". If your Evernote program folder isn't in either of those two places (only one of which should exist), you can find out where your Evernote.exe is located by right-clicking on the Evernote icon, then selecting properties, then the "Shortcut" tab, and looking at the value in "Start in" field; that value is the folder that contains your Evernote.exe file. [ * ] THIS BATCH FILE REQUIRES THE FREE UTILITY SWISS FILE KNIFE, WHICH YOU CAN DOWNLOAD FROM HERE: http://stahlworks.com/dev/swiss-file-knife.html [ * ] Place sfk.exe in your Evernote program folder, which, again, is probably c:\Program Files\Evernote\Evernote but might be c:\Program Files (x86)\Evernote\Evernote NOTE: If you are running a third-party antivirus program (something other than Windows Defender, which is included with Windows), you may get a warning that sfk.exe is unsafe. What that means is that the antivirus program has (quite rightly) detected that sfk.exe has the ability to modify program files -- which is exactly what we're about to use it for. Disable your antivirus program and try again. [ * ] If your Evernote program is not on Drive C:, edit line 71 of EN-color.bat , which just says C:, to show the appropriate drive letter. If your Evernote is on Drive D:, for instance, then just change this to D: [ * ] Next, you have to get to a command prompt. Under Windows 10, click Start. Scroll down and expand the "Windows System" folder. RIGHT-CLICK on "Command Prompt," and choose "Run as administrator." (If that doesn't work -- if you don't have administrator privileges on your computer -- then just LEFT-CLICK on "Command Prompt. Under Windows 7, that s "Run" from the start menu, then type CMD and hit <Enter>. [ * ] You'll now see the command prompt, which will look something like this: C:\Users\Username> Your cursor will be right after the ">" sign. At that spot type PRECISELY THIS (spaces matter): cd "\Program Files\Evernote\Evernote" The command prompt will change to: C:\Program Files\Evernote\Evernote> IF AND ONLY IF that doesn't work, THEN AND ONLY then type this: cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Evernote\Evernote" The command prompt will change to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Evernote\Evernote> [ * ] And now it's magic time! At the command prompt, type the name of the batch file: EN-color.bat A bunch of messages will flash on your screen, and you'll end up with a display similar to this: [total hits/matching patterns/non-matching patterns] [001/1/0] Evernote.exe 1 files checked, 1 changed. [total hits/matching patterns/non-matching patterns] [004/1/0] Evernote.exe 1 files checked, 1 changed. [total hits/matching patterns/non-matching patterns] [009/1/0] Evernote.exe 1 files checked, 1 changed. If the FIRST "changed" line says "0 changed" instead of "1 changed," that means the background color for notes failed to be changed for some reason (most likely in this case and the two below, because you've already run EN-color.bat). If the SECOND "changed" line says "0 changed" instead of "1 changed," that means the background color for the notes list failed to be changed for some reason. If the THIRD "changed" line says "0 changed" instead of "1 changed," that means the background color for the divider line in the notes list failed be changed for some reason. [ * ] At the command prompt type: exit That will close the command-prompt session. [ * ] If you disabled your antivirus program earlier, re-enable it now. [ * ] Finally, simply run Evernote as normal, and you should see darker background colors for notes and for the note list. That's it! EN-color.txt
  6. RavBoy, start over with a fresh copy of Evernote.exe and a fresh copy of my batch file AND JUST RUN THE BATCH FILE. Please stop editing it, stop removing things, and stop changing things. THE BATCH FILE WORKS; ALL THE CODE IS IN THE CORRECT FORMAT; CHANGE NOTHING. The best way to get a fresh copy of Evernote.exe -- one we can be sure you haven't modified already -- is to simply reinstall Evernote; all your notes and notebook structure will be preserved. As to the color of the note list, AFTER you've seen what my picks actually look like, you might want to investigate further, but it's not JUST a question of choosing a pretty color -- you have to use one that, when inverted to show the highlighted note, still leaves the text in the note list readable; likewise, you have to pick a divider-line color that contrasts with the background color. I spent a lot of time finding values that actually work; please try them.
  7. RavBoy, sfk.exe is completely free of Trojans, viruses, and other malware. What BitDefender is detecting is that sfk.exe has the capability of modifying other files on your hard drive, including other .exe files. And, yes, it does; indeed, that's the whole point of sfk.exe -- it allows you to edit and modify files, even non-document ones such as .exe or .dll files. In the case of the usage of it by my batch file, it replaces some white or off-white color coding in evernote.exe with different colors; that's the point of my batch file. Turn off BitDefender, and download sfk.exe then run my batch file. All best wishes.
  8. RavBoy, please try actually running my batch file. Don't try to do it yourself from the command line. As blakeshpere has pointed out, you're mistyping the commands in the batch file when you're entering them by hand at the command line. You are making this more difficult than it needs to be by NOT using the canned solution I provided. My batch file (attached again) say: sfk rep Evernote.exe -firsthit -text "/-webkit-touch-callout:text;/background-color:#B2b1B3; /" -yes You've added two spaces to it, and so of course it doesn't work. Please use the line VERBATIM as above -- spaces count; lack of spaces count; change nothing. Yes, that means NO spaces after either colon, and, yes, that means TWO MANDATORY SPACES after the final semicolon. EN-color.txt
  9. Hi, everyone. I'm the original poster in this thread. I've figured out how to change the background color for the note list (the pane where you see snippet view, card view, or thumbnail view) in addition to changing the background color of notes (as displayed on screen; no change is made to your actual notes). As before, you'll need the free utility Swiss File Knife to make the required patches to Evernote.exe; you can get it here: http://stahlworks.com/dev/swiss-file-knife.html I've also added extensive commentary to the batch file that makes the patches, so open it up in a text editor first and read it through before your run it. If for some reasons things go bad (they shouldn't!), a backup copy of your Evernote.exe file is automatically created named Evernote.ok, and if you want to start over from scratch, just reinstall Evernote from here https://evernote.com/download You can't attach a batch file to a message in this forum, so I'm providing the batch file with the extension .txt instead of .bat. Rename it to EN-color.bat before running it. I'd be grateful if a few experienced users would test this out to see if I've screwed up in anyway; once it passes muster here, I'll edit the first message in the thread and also put this new version there. Thank you! EN-color.txt
  10. Oh, come on, DTlow. You do this EVERY SINGLE TIME. You've got some compulsion (1) to pretend that votes here in any way, shape, or form influence Evernote's development priorities, and (2) to pretend that a desire for a night-mode / dark-mode (or any subset of it) is something hardly anyone wants. Seriously, I know getting that posting count up is a great high, but these boilerplate poo-pooings of what many, many, many users have been asking for for many, many, many years accomplish nothing BUT incrementing your counter. Let our voices be heard; save yours for when you have something productive and positive to say.
  11. It's not actually a flower, although it's certainly not a cleanly designed icon. It's a picture of a desktop in-box (complete with the finger notch used to dig out papers when the in-box is full to the brim), and an arrow pointing down into it, confusingly and pointlessly surrounded by a rectangle with three rounded corners and one non-rounded one. But what it's trying to convey is: "In the absence of any other instruction from you, this notebook is where I'm putting stuff." So, yes, it's the marker of the default notebook.
  12. Unbelievable, isn't it, Andre? Evernote is simply awful in this regard, a literal pain to use.
  13. I've never seen anything like that. My guess is that it's some sort of virus checker that is noting (quite rightly) that the binary code of the Evernote.exe file has been changed from some previously scanned version. I'm on Windows 7 32-bit; could that be a Windows 10 thing? Are you using a third-party virus scanner? If so, there may be a way to tell it to allow Evernote.exe to run as an exception to its normal rules.
  14. Hi, eric99. Whether or not you have Beta features enabled should make no difference; the patch will work with that feature either on or off. I'm not familiar with the phrase "side by side configuration error." What exactly is going wrong?
  15. Hi, @Don Dz . When playing around with this solution, just make a backup of Evernote.exe -- that one file -- before trying different colors. Then, rather than reinstalling the whole Evernote program, you can just copy the backup Evernote.exe back into the Evernote program folder. My own version of a batch file to automate that is as follow; you can just put these lines at the beginning of the batch file that modifies the program: C: CD \ CD \Progra~1\Evernote\Evernote REM This command makes a backup copy of Evernote.exe, just in case: copy Evernote.exe Evernote.ok As for trying different colors, just put "hex color picker" into Google, and a large number of easy-to-use online tools will be offered, each of which will give you the appropriate numerical value for the color you choose. As for the two sfk rep lines in the batch file, you're right that only one of them is needed, but WHICH one depends on which version of Evernote for windows you have installed. The first line works with versions before 6.16.2, and the second one works with 6.16.2 and later versions. The unneeded line doesn't do anything, as you've seen, in the versions it's not appropriate for, but having both lines in the batch file lets one file work for all Windows users. All best wishes!
  16. Oh, pshaw, @DTLow. The cost of user-support forums -- off-loading tech support onto an unpaid volunteer group of users -- is a cost-saver, not an act of generosity/commitment, on the part of any software corporation (and I say this as a former system operator of the volunteer-run user-support CompuServe WordStar forum from back in the late 1980s). I'm glad to volunteer my services when I can help someone, too, but the existence of this forum is hardly a sign of corporate commitment to its users. Now, if Evernote employees routinely popped up with answers and help, instead of one or two guys showing up once in a blue moon, THAT could be taken as a sign; please point to the Evernote employee who surpasses your own post count of 14,619 posts (Evernote-employed forum administrator Shane D has posted 294 times to date). All best wishes.
  17. With due repsect, @DTLow, do you have any evidence whatsoever that Evernote cares one whit about the respective upvote tallies of feature requests? Can you point to any trend whatsoever in what's being done by Evernote Corporation having any meaningful correlation with feature requests or the number of upvote clicks they receive? I think a lot of users, certainly including myself, have given up playing games here on the forum; to all appearances, our opinions or votes here are given no particular weight, if they're noted at all, by Evernote Corporation. So boilerplate to tell people to upvote something if they want to see it is worse than useless; it actually deflects meaningful conversation. The fact is that INCLUDE and EXCLUDE are basic, fundamental database-search functions; we shouldn't have to vote to have Evernote be a full-featured product in the space in which it competes. Here are the latest release notes for Evernote for Windows; please demonstrate the correlation between this and upvoting on this forum; if you don't like this set of release notes, pick any set you wish from the last two years, and show the correlation ... if you can: Release Notes for Version 6.16 Fixed: We took care of some of the top sync and crash issues that were getting in your way. We squashed some annoying editing and note title bugs that were buzzing around inside the app. Now you’re 100% able to rename hidden tags from the toolbar. Up from 0%, so that’s quite an increase. We had some attachment issues related to YouTube clips, PDFs, and shared notes. But we got professional help and worked through them. There was a problem with dragging and dropping emails from Microsoft Outlook into a note. Things should be back to normal now though. Switching notes would cause you to lose any edits you’d made to a business card. Since you probably made those changes for a reason, we fixed it. We fixedd teh spel cheker. Updated: We tweaked the note list header to match its look on other platforms. That might not sound like much, but trust us, it was super annoying. Now you can export a note with a missing source image (and all you see is that smug little icon instead) and import it back into your account. We’re still questioning the icon, but it refuses to tell us what it did with your image.
  18. Unbelievable that we don't have this basic functionality. I'm a novelist and often attach 100,000-word novel manuscripts to emails to my editors or agents, and have those emails saved to Evernote (via BCC: to my Evernote address). When I search, I want to find, for instance, any email that has the word "American" in it without Evernote throwing up many dozens of supposed hits because somewhere in the 100,000-word attachment the word "American" also happens to appear. I mean really, how hard is that to code? (Answer: it's not.)
  19. Oh, pshaw. We all know that the Feature Requests forum has been utterly ignored in the past (night mode being the most egregious case-in-point). The new CEO asked for our feedback but gave us no way to send it directly to him, as Emmgee pointed out -- but if there's ONE thread that he's likely to read on this entire forum, it's the one ostensibly about him.
  20. Yes, indeed! Markdown support would be fabulous. ( By the way, I'm a paying Evernote user since December 28, 2007, back when it was a Windows local-storage product.)
  21. UPDATED Monday, October 22, 2018: There's been a slight change in the Evernote.com code, which rendered the previous version of this fix unusable. The version in the edited original post (message #1) will now work with newer versions of Evernote (6.16.2 and later), as well as older ones, going back to September 2017).
  22. @Eira, I'm seeing the same problem you report. The native Evernote PDF annotate screen is definitely lower resolution; it's awful.
  23. Make sure you right-click on the PDF in the Note window (the big window at right), not the thumbnail window in the middle. You should see "Annotate This PDF" as an option on the right-click menu.
  24. It seems to be working fine in Canada now. Awesome! Very impressed, and very happy to have this. Thank you, Damian!
