  1. Hi all -

I made the jump to V10 - Windows and honestly it's worked better than expected. That said, I miss the way I could search for a Tag (using Ctrl-Q, iirc) and have Evernote find the tag in the tag list, navigate to it, and allow me to work with notes with that tag. V10 does most of this, but does not navigate the tag list to synchronize it with the tag for the notes being shown.

No biggie if all your desired notes are in that tag, but if you often have related notes in sub-tags, you are out of luck.

Any way to do this in V10?

    TIA

  2. Ok, I give up: When am I supposed to use App v. Web Links? It can't possibly be that I need to select one or the other based on a guess whether I'll be clicking on the link from the EN app v. a browser. Forget for now that the links don't (for me and others) seem to work (they bring me back to the Home display in the Windows EN App), which do I choose just to get a link so I can jump from one EN to another the way I always did in legacy?

    TIA

  3. It is, imho, unfortunate the "legacy" way of simply picking the tag you know the note(s) you want to work with are in, then (in case there are lots of other notes also using that tag) typing in search text and having the list shortened to just those notes in that tag that have that search text is no longer the way it works. That was clean, efficient, logical and precise.

    Progress, eh?

SAME ISSUE - ITS A BUG PLEASE FIX IT !!!

    MacOS = Sonoma 14.3.1 (23D60)

    Evernote = 10.78.8

    Notes for Devs:

At the top of the page the pop up shows up, but when scrolling further down its IMPOSSIBLE to decrypt the encrypted text because the pop up is nowhere to be found, yet you can not click anywhere else on the page, or app, so its almost like its 'locked up' since you can not click out, or use the keyboard to escape\tab\etc.   The only two choices are:

    1) as 'jcnassoc' described, have to restart the app

    2) can go to 'Evernote' menu then -->Settings-->Preferences-->Notes-->Note Width (section @the bottom) --> Switch between the two choices to 'Fit to Windows' OR 'Optimize...' to get the app to respond back.

    Bon chance!

    Excellent work-around. Thanks!

Hi.  That's just the way Evernote's very basic encryption works I'm afraid...  you could maybe use a password-protected word processor file attached to your note for those with several confidential sections - just add an 'executive summary' in the note to feed the search index.

    https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209005547-Encrypt-text-in-a-note

Howdy, and thanks for the reply.

True, I can work around the issue, but it's just I would think if they tested a note with two encrypted blocks... the first one "up" so far in the note that it can't be seen while accessing the second encrypted block, they would see this is a major defect. I can move all my encrypted blocks to the "top" of the note to resolve this, but I mean the software should be a bit more professional than this. I mean, as a fellow software developer I feel the user experience does need to be taken into consideration.

    Thanks for the reply though!

  6. Hi all -

The following text, which I included in my ticket to Evernote support, describes what I am seeing. Have any of you experienced this?

    Hello,

I'm experiencing an issue with accessing encrypted text in Evernote, both on the web and Windows versions. When I try to access encrypted text, a blue popup appears. If the popup is on-screen, I know I need to close it before I can do anything else in Evernote.

The problem arises when I have multiple encrypted text scattered throughout long notes. If I click on encrypted text that's further down in the note, the blue popup appears next to an encrypted text block higher up in the note. As a result, the popup is off-screen, and I'm unable to click the X to close it. This forces me to terminate the app and restart it.

To resolve this issue, we need to either disable the blue popup or ensure that it appears next to the encrypted text I clicked on. Can you assist with this?

    Thank you.

Wondering if anyone else is seeing this, and if anyone knows of a work-around.

    Thanks!

v10 will install into it's own path, it does not use any resources employed by legacy.

It is up to you to decide to purge legacy first, and then install v10, or install v10 right on top of legacy. Usually v10 will remove the legacy version.

If you decide to keep a legacy copy, it will double the space needed for your local database copy. v10 will download it all again.

Thanks for the info PE; much appreciated. My biggest concern is if I don't uninstall Legacy and wait to do that post-install of V10, would Legacy's eventual uninstall affect V10.

Based on your post it sounds like there's no risk, so that gives me the option of keeping Legacy for a bit (though I guess I can't use it side-by-side with V10, so may be moot). I've experienced some software where the uninstall of the older version clobbers the newer, so just wanted to check.

    Thanks!

@jcnassocThere is a documented limitation that Joplin only implements 1000 files at a time. It is not clear if that is 1000 notes in a collection of ENEX files or 1000 notes or attachments in a collection of ENEX files. I think it is the latter, as each of those things has to get a UUID.

There is a Joplin plug-in that will strive to restore links between notes as more and more Evernote content comes in.   Seems to be pretty clever and about the best that can be done.

    Hi Dave.

Thanks for the info... I actually ran out of disk space after importing two of my five ENEXs... Will try again later and see if that 1000 note limit makes this a no-go for me.

    Appreciate the help!

  9. Alternatives and Encrypted Blocks

    Hi all -

Background: I have lots of encrypted blocks in Evernote, so at least for now I will remain a paid subscriber so I can retain access to that content. IOW My primary plan is to transition to EN Web and EN Windows version 10.

That said, my experience and reading some of the issues reported here tell me I need to have an escape plan ready and set the stage for a quick getaway to some other alternative. I've narrowed down the candidates to Notion, Obsidian and Joplin

Question: Have any of you played / used any of these three and do any of them support encrypting or otherwise protecting sensitive data.

TIA! If I leave EN I don't think I'll miss the software as much as I'll miss the community and how helpful you all have been over the year!

    Enjoy the journey!

    1.) No

    2.) No

But they do work hard to make sure the app is worse than old versions, so there's that.

LOL I do find it helps us to keep our sense of humor.

I feel like I'm in a relationship that I know is bad for me and I should walk away from, but I just can't break away from it. I mean, everything will be back to the way it was tomorrow, right? I don't need to go find someone else that will remind me of how Evernote used to be, do I?

  11. Hi all -

1.) Does Evernote Web (on Chrome) support the ability to select text and have it encrypted?  If so, how? I don't see any options for this.

2.) When Evernote Web displays a note made in Legacy that is "HTML Content", it appears I cannot "get to" any encrypted blocks within the page. In other words, when I try to click on the encrypted text to get to the "Reveal encrypted content..." popup option, the menu does not appear.

                     image.png.5ee79c3114d568d8dba02a85265e5df2.png

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Thanks!

  12. Hi all -

I've been using Legacy up until recently and starting to make the switch out by accessing Evernote via Chrome, and have noticed some odd behavior related to the screengrab attached.

    image.png.a7ddcd3dc16906cb4d59c8523d914bb5.png

    Among my observations are:

    • The blue pop-up appears every time I click on an encrypted block.
    • Until I click the X to close said pop-up, I cannot select either option from the dropdown menu.
    • If the encrypted block is the lone (or first) encrypted block on the page, no problem. However, if I've scrolled down the page and there are other encrypted block "above" the current page, Evernote becomes unresponsive and I must refresh my browser to unfreeze Evernote.
      • My theory is that the blue pop-up always appears next to the first encrypted block, and if that's off screen I can't get to the X to close it.

Are others seeing this as well?

FWIW I haven't yet installed the latest Windows Evernote app, as I am of the opinion there's still lots of stuff not working and am waiting for at least another week to pass to allow the Evernote team to publish updates as people are forced to move over and report issues. This theory seems reasonable, as there has been two or three updates in the past week alone.

    Thanks all!

Hi.  Yes (probably).  I was using Android Legacy until this week because I have an old phone,  but it stopped syncing with the server a week or two ago.

I've now uninstalled it - I took the failure to sync as a sign that more server work has cut me off,  and it isn't worth spending time trying to fix it.  I mainly used the phone as a way to add images to my notes,  and I can still take the pictures and now email them to the server.

Asking to continue using Legacy is like wanting to buy your videos on Betamax because you still have a perfectly good player and prefer the format.  Evernote is about to retire Legacy permanently because there are better and more efficient options out there - I sympathise that you may not like them,  but that will be the only option soon.

I've been saying for weeks that its better to adopt v10 now than have to scrabble to adapt when the old servers stop working - we'll be happy to try to help with any issues,  and you can (for the moment) always dip back into Legacy for a quick familiar fix.  I know the 'help' here is sometimes snarky,  but that's usually because the initial request comes in with attitude and aggression.

Somebody here has probably found a way round any problem you may face,  and I'd hope we'll be as helpful as possible...

Although I don't fully agree with the analogy you present, gazumped, I commend you for your post and what you are saying. I wish more postings--from those asking for help as well as those offering help--would tone down the "attitude" and just try to work the topic through for the benefit of the greater good. Thank you for posting what you did!

I would move to a newer Legacy build in the near term, and Evernote 10.x in the long term.

A newer Legacy build than what you have currently can be downloaded from here: https://cdn1.evernote.com/win6/public/Evernote_6.25.3.9348.exe

    I hope that helps!

Thanks for that info and link, macfixer. Will be difficult but I'll have to think about why I am not on the latest EN Legacy build (I always stay current with all my software unless there's a reason not to). I do sort of recall having to revert back once, but I think that was when I tried to go to the then-current non-legacy app and found it to be a disaster.

Thanks again to you, and all who have or will reply! Great community!

Actually they are synonyms IMHO. The architect in your example would probably be the project/product manager in the case of a software, the ones who link between the clients & the devs.
Well, I guess they're the one to blame if they're not even reviewing these forums to collect users' feedback.

As a certified Project Manager I wish I could push back on that, but alas...

"In the old days" a true developer wouldn't rely on what a PM, BA, etc. are telling them is needed--they were one with their user community so as they are coding they "know" what users really find valuable. Again, alas...

Let's hope for the best once legacy goes bye-bye (and that they give us a final "okay... as of mm/dd/yyyy you can no longer use legacy" warning so those of us waiting till the end for a miracle will have time to make a final choice and implement it.

Hi.  I asked the AI search "how many of my notes are encrypted?" and got a quick response... from a rapid check they all seem to qualify.

Some care is required in phrasing.  I first tried "how many notes contain encryption?" which got me a lot of notes containing that word,  but which were not,  in fact encrypted.

The 'new' encryption is actually slightly enhanced from what I remember before - it asks for a clue word or phrase that will be included in the note,  but not encrypted.  I previously did that manually.

EDIT:  and then of course I looked up Evernote search terms,  and just typing encryption: in the normal search gets me the same answer....

Oh... I hadn't thought about using the newer Android app's AI feature--cool thought! That said, encryption: works like a charm (apologies for my not finding that on my own).

    Thanks!
