  1.  , but it appears it's not a priority for them

Regardless of your opinion on Gaz's replies, right there is your answer. It's Evernote's product and if they choose to not implement any stronger/better encryption, it's certainly their choice, If it's a deal breaker for anyone, then it's the user's choice to use an app that better suits their needs.

  2. @ab1kenobee, thank you for the congratulations!

Yes, I've become jaded wrt Evernote and realize this is just a part of life. But I'm not a negative person in general. I've been coding for the past 40 years. I've been very "computer bound" in the past 20 years due to work and doing more things on a computer (like most of us) such as bill paying, meal planning, grocery lists, photos, social networking, budgeting, etc. But I'm looking forward to being less computer bound, now that I am retired. And the time required to migrate back to Evernote (should I ever want to) is not something I envision wanting to do because I'm enjoying life beyond sitting in front of a computer. ;-)

    Thanks again!

  3. I can't believe this has NOT already been posted in this thread!!!

That may be an indication of how apathetic many of us have become wrt to Evernote.

Good chance Chris is the kind of lead to breathe new life into Evernote... this could be exciting... we'll just have to wait and see!

I'm not going to get my hopes up. I do keep haunting the board to kind of monitor what's going on at EN. I suspect for me, it is too little, too late. Because if they were to address my main point of contention (scalability on all platforms), it would take a major overhaul and at least a year or more. Since I am newly retired, I will be spending less time on my computer and less willing to migrate back to Evernote. When I started my first migration to Evernote (June 2009), I really thought that would be the last time I'd have to do this (after years migrating from various PDAs and their associated desktop apps to another).

Onenote is not nearly as useful to me as Evernote (before EN became totally useless due to the scalability issue). But...Onenote WORKS and 60-70% useful is better than zero percent useful.

  4. Sorry I meant locking it down. I am working and multitasking so not always using the correct words. My computer locks after a few minutes. As on my phone - I wanted to source an app locker to lock certain apps whilst leaving other things on my computer available for the family. Despite you not being able to imagine why, you have recommended an app that does just that. i suggest you google Gameprotector and read the list of reasons it gives as to why it might be useful.

I have not misremembered a password I thought of literally 30 seconds before using it. I used the app to lock Evernote as soon as it was downloaded and then used the password I had , only moments before, set up, to unlock it again. Oddly some apps are rubbish and go wrong.

Can you please stop calling me ridiculous and silly. The fact that my lifestyle isn't one you can "imagine" doesn't make it "silly", thus the existence of apps such as Gameprotector and the CM app locker on my phone.

I got some genuine good advice from Gazumped, thank you very much for recommending Gameprotector.

i suggest if you have any more insults for me you don't stick them on here to make an already stressful work afternoon more so, but go shout them to your cat or something.

First, I did not call you silly.  I did say leaving an unattended computer running w/o locking it down...is silly, if you have concerns about someone getting into the data on it.  And it is.

Second, I did not say I could not imagine why an app locker was silly. My statement above clarifies this.

Third, if you could set your emotions aside for a moment, you might be able to see that I am not insulting you.  I am offering suggestions. And since you seem to be confusing so many issues in this very short thread, it would seem to be even more probable that you are misremembering the password.

I don't make this stuff up.

    Once again...good luck.

  5. Mine shuts down after so many minutes as well. I'm not talking about shutting down the PC, I'm talking about password protecting one particular app. I need to have my PC open at times with no access to certain apps. I'm sorry your imagination cannot accommodate my particular lifestyle.

I shall google Gameprotector. Thank you

I'm not an idiot and do memorise my passwords, the app I downloaded has decided the password I memorised is incorrect.

I hope you do not take such a hectoring tone with all the comments you moderate - I am merely looking for help.

    M

We are not talking about shutting down your computer. Locking it does not turn it off. It simply requires a password. This prevents any guests in your home from being able to access the apps and it's silly to not do this, if you leave a computer running.

FWIW, it's more probable that you are misremembering the password rather than the software has decided the correct one is incorrect.

    Good luck.

  6. Please search

Thank you, I wanted more like an individual app locker, its impractical for me to lock down the family computer :/ I downloaded an app locker now and it's locked Evernotw and WONT LET ME BACK IN - so Im miserable :/

I can't imagine why it's impractical to lock down your computer. Mine shuts down after so many minutes of inactivity. It takes about three seconds to sign back in & IMO, it's ridiculous to leave a computer running in your home and not have it lock after a while or not lock it when you walk away. Authorized family members can easily & quickly unlock it in a matter of seconds.

Another option is Gameprotector. It's free. Please Google it or search the board on it. I have posted about it in the past.

As you can see, when using a password/PIN, it's important to make sure you know & remember the password/PIN.

    Good luck.

  7. By the way, if we're talking about cloud data lockers, Amazon is now down to 60 dollars for unlimited data.

I have been using Amazon S3 servers via Jungledisk UI for many years now (at least 7). IDK offhand how much space I use, but I think it's safe to say I use more than most of the average Joes b/c I tend to be a "virtual hoarder" and have documents, files, photos and even home movies I've been collecting for about 25 years now. What used to cost me ~$90/month is now down to $40.

  8. I switched to OneNote in the end. Usually not a Microsoft fan (being mostly a Mac user) but they have done an exceptional job on OneNote. If you use it with OneDrive you can get up to 30GB free cloud storage too and no need to worry about taking up space and being charged (for going over) Evernote's limited space. Password protection on sections too.

But anyway, thats's a different discussion.

I switched from Evernote to Onenote last year. I got Office 365 (annual subscription) which includes free updates of the Office suite software and one terabyte of cloud storage. Onenote doesn't work as well for me as Evernote USED to. But Evernote does not scale well. They are aware of this and have continued to not address the problem. It got to the point where EN simply would not work on my PC, iPhone or iPad due to the large number of notes I had (66,000+) I had. So for me, the $100/year for the version of Office 365 I signed up for was worth it, since I had two EN premium accounts. But as you say, that's a different discussion.

  9. Thanks, I did misunderstand. Syncing my notebook makes sense.

I can see the logic for making people pay for the feature when it's unique. But, when I can get it on my laptop or my Mac or my PC but not my phone or tablet, I struggle. Just because I access with a tablet, they want me to pay? I can remote access my PC and bypass all this. I'm usually on a fiber connection so I'd never noticed this before or I'd not have installed it.

I'd always thought that the rationale for pricing structures was offering something unique, special or unusual at various levels.

We try to offer a very rich set of functionality for Free users, which you can use for years without paying us a nickel. But we are a business with employees who like to eat food and pay rent, so we must choose some set of features and capabilities that are reserved for paying customers to encourage some people (approximately 5% of all active users) to cover the cost of writing the software and running the servers.

Adding full offline synchronization to low-powered mobile phones takes many months of engineering to build and tune, so we've put that into the "pay" bucket instead of other options (e.g. charge everyone for the Android client).

  10.

The usual workaround that I suggest nowadays is to make a separate account for stuff that you are afraid that you might mess up by inadvertently editing them. Share the notebooks in that account as read-only to your main account, and you are saved from yourself.

It's an ad-hoc thing.  Fiddling about sharing with myself from an additional account sounds a right PITA.  I just want to click a button "Make Read Only", "Protect from Changes" or whatever.

    KD

Since there is not a way to do what you want & there is no way to know if Evernote will add this or not (since they do not discuss their roadmap), Jeff is simply offering you an alternate way to do what you are wanting to do (write protect notes).  Hence the term "workaround".

  11. I second this request.

The diary application "One Day" requires a password.  Evernote could to.  And should, given what some of us put in it.

Not sure why this entire discussion thread is about "other ways" to keep Evernote data secure.  Why not just add a password feature and move on?

Other ways are discussed in order to inform users of, well, other viable ways that are currently available to protect sensitive information. We are users, just like yourself. So unless & until Evernote decides to add a password to their desktop apps, other methods are all that are available to users.

  12. Yes, yes, I cry out for nested notebooks/notestacks, just like nested file folders in any OS. For a simple reason--it's just so intuitive, logical, and natural way to org the files/notes.

Nested notebooks/folders are anything but intuitive or logical, for the reasons Gaz mentioned above. Jefito's classic example is if I have a red, round, rubber ball, do I file it under things that are red? Things that are round? Things that are rubber? Things that are toys? This becomes more complex the more notes you have. If you have only a few hundred notes, then it may be pretty easy to retrieve them by digging around in nested notebooks/folders. But if you have tens of thousands of notes, it becomes a nightmare. If we came out of the womb knowing to use nested notebooks/folders, then it would seem applications like Mac's Finder or Windows Locate32 or Everything would be useless.

  13. It's hard to say what Evernote will or will not do.

Here are some features, that many said would never happen, but were added after many users kept on requesting them:

    • Stacks (in response to the early requests for hierarchical notebooks)
    • Note links
    • Editing of images within Evernote
For anyone who doesn't think it will ever happen and who don't see the need, feel free to just ignore this thread.

For those who do see the need, feel free to keep on requesting it.

But any post has the effect of bumping this thread to the top of the list, making it more visible.  :)

And after nearly 7 years, there are those who regularly ignore requests to back up what they say.

Wow!  After nearly 7 years, and 715 posts, this thread is still active with many, many users asking for hierarchical Notebooks (sub-Notebooks).  There remain a few users who consistently argue against Evernote providing this feature.

Really? Who? Do try to be specific when making vague claims like this.

Anyways, yawn. Nothing new to see here.

Don't know what you mean by "yawn".  Do try to be specific when making vague claims like this.

If this is boring to you, then why bother posting a reply that adds no value?

If you don't get the significance of many users continuing to request this feature after 7 years, then I don't think anyone can explain it to you.

If there is seven years worth of posts by people arguing "against Evernote providing this feature", surely you can dredge up at least one post...??? Rather than just flapping your proverbial gums.

    YAWN.

  15. The fact is that very little changed after that blog post and Libin's response.

In the last year I haven't seen any of the "sexy" security that was promised and I think overall quality has in many cases collapsed. Penultimate, the new Mac client and the '"beta" web app have been pretty embarrassing and in some cases required huge amounts of (costly) back pedalling. In the meantime they decided (correctly I believe) to stop supporting free users but handled the process terribly.

Libin is great for click bait, you can see why the tech conferences and techy websites like him. I like listening to him on the podcasts. I don't believe a single word he says about Evernote because most of the time it's not true or he simply doesn't have the ability to deliver it.

I still use the product dozens of times a day, but in pretty much every use case it's for a lightweight task. I don't think I would ever be able to commit to completing a really important task in Evernote.

I disagree that very little has changed, for the reasons you mention. IMO, a lot has changed and for the worst. Overall decline in quality, removing key features with no warning (sharing, support for free users - which, BTW was silently implemented with no mention by Evernote for several MONTHS eventhough it was a hot topic amongst users on this board), support for premium users seems to be pretty poor now, too) and overall, divorcing themselves from their users.

  16. ChromeOS isn't a workstation Linux distribution for a sys admin. As far as who needs data locally?

Anyone with a laptop (consultants, engineers, sales engineers) that travel, work in remote sites, secured areas, closed datacenters, subways and tunnels, people who fly.... Just because it's not your need, doesn't mean the need doesn't exist.

I'm pretty sure no one is saying there is not a need. What is being said, is that Evernote has stated publicly they had no plans to make a linux client & there has been no evidence they have changed that opinion.

  17. Windows tells me that elephant.exe is a suspicious file at download

I'm not saying it's NOT a bad file.  But IME, Windows stating a file is "suspicious" doesn't necessarily mean the file is bad.  It just means Windows doesn't know about this file.  I remember this was discussed on the board previously regarding some other third party software. Let's say I write a Windows app that is virus/malware free, but is only downloaded by a (relatively) small portion of Windows users, Windows may not know that it is an ok file & simply reports it as "suspicious". It is then up to the user to do their due diligence (which is what you are doing) an decide to go ahead & download or not. In the case I mentioned above, the developer was a well respected member of the Evernote message board & so we all knew it was ok to download.

  18. OneNote and EverNote are good professional things to have BUT for those of you who are more focused on working with a desktop environment you might take a look at FileOne the email client, note taking organizer. If you google for FileOne organizer you will find its website and a youtube introduction. FileOne is centered around the desktop and is not a real cloud aware app.

There you may find that FileOne organizer with calendar support, is more powerfull and easier to use in a desktop environment. You use a treeview to access and structure all data in it and you can use it as a file storage engine. It can store and play music tracks, online radio stations, movies, images, photes, office files and it allows you to hyperlink anything to anything inside FileOne. All data is stored in a single file that is designed to hold huge amounts/gigabytes of data as well as tiny amounts of data. For small businesses or self employed there is even an invoice generator.

Since all data is stored as in a single file, you can use FileOne as a rich distributable documentation vehicle to Windows and Linux users since FileOne runs in Windows and Linux (Gnome, KDE type of desktops).

Maybe a possible alternative for EverNote (or OneNote)?

In addition to the points brought up by subsequent posts, I would add that probably a majority of Evernote users are not limiting their use to a single Windows computer and not interested in making distributables. (Duh). I'm sure there may be a few...but in general, not so much. Which was the initial allure of Evernote and now Onenote with Onecloud.

And to reiterate, developers are welcomed warmly on the board...so long as they are clear about their involvement with the app. But those who pose as "satisfied customers"... Not so much. So if Regatzo is (the sole) employee/dev of the app he/she is promoting, he/she would be wise to own this.

  19. Is there a way (other than being a premium member) that I can make a request for a feature directly to Evernote? There are features in any software that not everyone uses. That doesn't make those features useless or senseless. I'd like to make the suggestion to someone who has either the power to implement it or the ear of someone with the power. It seems I'm searching for a tool in the wrong drawer. I thought this was the 'here's an idea I'd like to see drawer.' Turns out this is the 'maybe a lot of things' and 'I really don't get why' drawer. My mistake. Can someone direct me to customer service?

No one has said your request is "useless or senseless".  The main point is that that the main determinant is with Evernote.  It's a fact of life with any software.  Those who are responsible for it must make a determination if they want to add it (or not).  And if they want to add it, it must be put into a priority list.

  20.

Or Evernote could make it a feature. iPhoto (Mac) has such a feature: individual photos can be hidden and the hiding for all (hidden) photos can be turned on and off with a hiding master switch. Simple and great.

They could. They could do a lot of things. Whether they do or not is an entirely different matter. It may be they plan to do it but it's a low priority. Or they may decide they simply don't want to add it, for whatever reason.

  21. since it's not implemented yet we have to look for reasons why...

Um, no we don't.  We don't because it doesn't matter why.  The bottom line is it is not.  So what the user needs to do is decide what they need to do.  Use EN for non sensitive info?  Use local notebooks for sensitive into?  Use another app?
