About Stefan

  1. In case you're interested: I wrote a small tool that syncs Evernote notebooks with IMAP-folders in a GMail account. Tags in Evernote are reflected as Labels/tags in GMail. The tool is open source (and of course free of charge). Some more info about the tool (named EvImSync, short for EVernote IMap SYNC): http://tools.tortoisesvn.net/EvImSync.html Download available here: http://code.google.com/p/evimsync/downloads/list I wrote the tool so I always have a backup (or two, I sync some notebooks with multiple GMail accounts) of all my important notes, and I can always access my notes even if I don't have EN installed. Of course, EN premium is much better with syncing, but I like to have my own backup of my notes.
  2. Using EN3 3.0.0.582 (28915) on Vista Ultimate: Today I found a file named "Evernote.ini" in my drive root (D:\Evernote.ini). After some testing, I found that this file is written every time I change something in Account->Properties->File Auto-Import (I assume the file gets written on other setting changes too). That file does not belong there! Please store setting files (and others too, like the database files) only in %appdata%\EverNote3 - that's where it belongs and nowhere else! Storing a file in a drive root is the worst of all locations: I know some companies which prevent normal users from having write access there, so storing the file there won't work in those companies. Also, that location does not roam, that's why you should use %appdata% (that folder gets roamed).
  3. Request for enhancement: Currently EN3 can only sync with an EverNote account. But there's imap support (still considered alpha) for the mobile version, so there is an imap library which EN3 (the 'grown up' client, not the mobile one) could also use. I'd like to be able to store and retrieve notes from an imap account (one I can choose myself, not a special EN account). Since all notes are html anyway, that should be possible. And hey, if the imap lib could handle attachments, that might even lead to the often requested feature of attaching files to a note! I've been using EN2 for a long time and came to really like it. The search and tagging features were what I liked most because it allowed me to find notes fast. In EN3, the tagging feature is a major step back from EN2, so for me, the whole advantage over other solutions is pretty much gone, especially considering that other solutions (while they have their own disadvantages) usually have features EN2/3 is missing (attaching files, encypting whole notes or databases, ...). So now, I'm using a combination of Thunderbird (i.e., mails=notes) with some custom scripts, GDS and IMAP to store my notes - even though the search in TB is slow and doesn't work always as expected, I can use GDS for searching. And I get free sync with my IMAP account, can attach any files I like to a note, can encrypt the notes/mails, ... While I still use EN3 for gathering info quickly, all notes I want to keep for longer (not just the same day) I move over to my IMAP account and handle them with Thunderbird.
  4. After using the latest version for a while (on XP SP3 and Vista Ultimate SP1), I'd like to report what I found so far: * while Shift-F10 now works (thanks a lot btw!), it still doesn't work properly: - select a note in the note list (tab there, use key-up/down to navigate to a note) - since when working without a mouse, my mouse cursor is usually somewhere at the border of the screen - press Shift-F10 --> the context menu should show up somewhere in the note list near the selected note, but instead it shows up where the mouse cursor is (usually at a completely different place, sometimes even on a different monitor!) * navigating the side pane with the keyboard is only working partly: - tab to the side pane - use key-up/down to 'mark' a tag - pressing enter does nothing, only space will select the marked tag (enter should work too, but not just 'select' but select and deselect all other entries) - if you have multiple notebooks, it is not possible to select one: neither space nor return does anything * navigating through the different panes with tab doesn't work properly. - select the side pane - press tab (the note list is selected) - press key-up a few times to select different notes - press tab (now I'm not sure what exactly gets the focus, but it seems to be the notes) --> hint: make it UI wise more clear what has the focus! - press key-up a few times to go through different notes - now suddenly the note list is selected again * send-by-email didn't work in the last version at all, now it's back to the same I reported here: http://forum.evernote.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5905 * create a new notebook. Once created, the new notebook does not have an icon in the side view. Only after restarting EN3 the icon shows up. * select Attributs->created->since->this month --> Even though it's may 10th, I have notes show up way more than just a month. Even if 'this month' actually means 'one month', that would still mean the entry from april 6th should not show up (see attached screenshot wrongdates.png) --> after some more testing, I can see that none of the entries in the 'created since' attributes tree is working properly. I even get for the 'today' entry notes back about two months (those notes showing up have neither been modified or had a subject change ever) --> the same problem happens for the 'last modified' attributes Maybe relevant for this issue: I'm using a German OS which means the date format is DD/MM/YYYY and not MM/DD/YYYY Now to some (still) bad UI decisions made: * while the notebook 'tree' in the side pane properly expands, the sub-notebooks are expanded at the same level as the root node, they're not indented as for example the 'Atrributes' tree. This is very confusing. * the menu entries are always all enabled, even if with the current situation they won't do anything. For example, the Note->Merge entry should only be enabled if at least two notes are selected. If no or just one note is selected, that entry should be disabled. Most menu entries have similar situations where they should be shown disabled. * in Tools->Options->Tape the font selection combo works ok, but I doubt that many users can really chose a font by just seing its name. There's a lot of room just below the font combobox, why not put an example text there which shows up in the font currently selected in the combobox? Or even better, use a custom combobox control which shows the fontname in the chosen font (see attachment betterfontselection.png showing an example of such a custom font selection combobox). * The "Create Notebook" dialog uses a combobox to select from three (!) notebook types. The hint text for each type is only shown once the notebook type is selected in the combobox. Much better would be if the dialog was a little bit bigger, with the three nb types selectable with a simple radio button. And of course the hint text visible below each radio button so it's immediately visible what each nb type is for. * The "change dates" dialog to changed the different dates of notes has links to set the current date. A link is used to open a browser, not to execute an action. Please put a button there instead of a link. * The tags which are not selected are shown in grey. Grey labels indicate that they can't be clicked on, that they're disabled. But of course they can be clicked and selected. This should be changed so that the currently active tag is shown in bold and the others normal (but not grey!). * The buttons in the toolbar don't indicate that their active when the mouse cursor hovers over them. It's not immediately clear that you can click on them. * The default ink tool settings comboboxes show the icons not with a transparent background, which looks ugly. See attachment inktools.png.
  5. IMHO this is unlikely a graphical bug but a problem with the network. The problem most applications don't handle well is that as soon as the OS returns from hybernation/sleep, the network is not ready yet. Especially if you're 'connected' via a wireless card. But of course, the applications start running immediately without realizing that the network is not ready yet. My advice to all application developers is: after returning from hybernation, set a timeout of about one minute before you do any automatic networking stuff.
  6. Using EN 3.0.0.542 on Vista Ultimate In the Properties dialog, auto-import: * resize the columns, make them bigger so that the last one goes out of the window on the right (scrollbar appears) * move the scrollbar so that the last column (notebook dropdown) comes into sight * the dropdown control is not redrawn correctly see screenshot On a sidenote: * it's not good that the columns can be resized to a size of 0 pixels so that they vanis completely * the default size of the columns when the dialog is shown first is also not good: the middle columns are too small so that the column titles are not fully visible
  7. * Shift-F10 still doesn't show the context menu. Reported several times, last time here: http://forum.evernote.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5768 * The UI hasn't improved, so the list here still applies: http://forum.evernote.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=5784 * I miss the ability to lock a note, as it was possible in EN2. * When clicking on an image in a note in the tape view, then scrolling up to another note and clicking somewhere in the text of that note, the whole stuff up to the point where I clicked is selected. This is annoying, because I often click inside the notes when scrolling to 'mark' the point where I last was reading. It's a habit I got from text editors: if you have the cursor set to a position and then scroll, you can go back to the cursor position by hitting the 'cursor left' key. But the way EN3 handles this by selecting everything, this doesn't really work. * Sometimes when clicking on notes in the note list, the wrong note is shown in the tape view. To reproduce, select a note in the tape view, then scroll a little. Then click on a note in the note list. You may have to repeat this a few times, but then you'll get the wrong note, not the one you clicked in the note list. * GDI leaks: - select a note, hit Ctrl-Shift-T (to get the 'tag' dialog), close the tag dialog again. Repeat this a few times: every time the count of GDI handles increases and never goes back again. - print preview leaks two GDI handles (show print preview, close it again) - normal print dialog also leaks two GDI handles * just wanted to disable the "custom height" in the view menu. Didn't work. Until I realized that this is not an option but a choice. Which means yet another 'bad UI' decision. Please use not a checkbox in the menu but a circle indicating a radio-button choice.
  8. Using Evernote 3.0.0.542 I have Thunderbird as my default mail client. When sending a note by email, the note is copied to the new mail as html-text. Since I have set up TB to write mails in text (not html) by default, the mail contains the html as text. See attached screenshot.
  9. I'm guessing you're still using Win2k? That version of Windows does not have the required version of dbghelp installed by default. You can get a more current version directly from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=CD1FC4B2-0885-47F4-AF45-7FD5E14DB6C0&displaylang=en But I agree that this should not make EN3 throw an error - it should either ship the required dbghelp dll or deactivate the crash handler on Win2k.
  10. The buttons in the toolbar don't indicate that their active when the mouse cursor hovers over them. It's not immediately clear that you can click on them. The tags which are not selected are shown in grey. Grey labels indicate that they can't be clicked on, that they're disabled. But of course they can be clicked and selected. This should be changed so that the currently active tag is shown in bold and the others normal (but not grey!). The "Create Notebook" dialog uses a combobox to select from two (!) notebook types. The hint text for each type is only shown once the notebook type is selected in the combobox. Much better would be if the dialog was a little bit bigger, with the two nb types selectable with a simple radio button. And of course the hint text visible below each radio button so it's immediately visible what each nb type is for. The "change dates" dialog to changed the different dates of notes has links to set the current date. A link is used to open a browser, not to execute an action. Please put a button there instead of a link. The "Tag Assignement" dialog was discussed before for EverNote2.2 already, so I won't add more to that. Maybe you guys should once have a look at the famous "Interface Hall Of Shame" http://homepage.mac.com/bradster/iarchitect/shame.htm. That's a great resource to learn how UIs should look like (the examples of course are there to show you how not to do it). And it could prevent you from having EverNote show up there too. Stefan
  11. Can't believe this is still not fixed (3.0.0.539): Shift-F10 does not show the context menu. As I mentioned before, Shift-F10 is the Windows key accelerator for the context menu. If not explicitely overridden by an application, Windows will send the WM_CONTEXTMENU message to a window if that key combination is pressed. Since Evernote is a note taking application it is predestined to be used on laptops. And most laptops don't have the special windows-contextmenu key as do desktop keyboards. Which means using Evernote on a laptop is basically unusable. Also: the same bug I reported for EverNote 2.2 is still there: if you use the context-menu key on a desktop keyboard, the context menu is shown at the cursor position! Which is completely bogus since I'm using the keyboard and don't care where the mouse cursor is - the only thing I care about are the selected items in the window. (Windows will set the x/y coordinates of the 'cursor' in the WM_CONTEXTMENU message to -1 if it was started with the keyboard instead of an actual right-click. It's the job of the application to then determine the correct position for the context menu by finding the control that is selected/has focus and usually center the context menu on that control). Please fix this soon. I hate using the mouse, I'm much faster with the keyboard... Stefan
  12. Evernote 3.0.0.539 right-click on a note in the tape header, chose "send by email". I have Thunderbird as my default mail client. And thunderbird is opened with a mail window. But: there's no way to actually send that mail. See attached screenshot. Seems Evernote calls Thunderbird the wrong way, it shows the mail instead of editing it for sending.
  13. I can confirm this with 539 on Vista Ultimate SP1. Simply switching to "work offline" makes EN3 use all available CPU, switching "work offline" off solves the problem. Stefan
  14. I can confirm that. The link doesn't work both on XP SP2 and Vista SP1 (XP with IE as the default browser, Vista with FireFox2 as the default).
  15. Using version 3.0.0.525 (25900) on Vista Ultimate (German): There's a GDI handle leak. Steps to reproduce: (you need a tool which shows the open GDI handles, for example ProcessExplorer http://technet.microsoft.com/de-ch/sysinternals/bb896653(en-us).aspx ) 1) Open Evernote 2) show the note list 3) doubleclick on a note to get the out-of-tape view of the note 4) close the note again After 4), the number of open GDI handles should be the same again as in 2), but the number increases by 21 every time a note is opened that way.
