Hi.  If you're dealing with a batch of notes that need sorting I'd suggest simply tagging each note with the name of the notebook,  then select a group of notes by tag or by Shift- or Ctrl-click and use the pop-up menu to assign them to the correct notebook and apply any additional tags or remove the notebook one.  Also right-clicking a single note pops up the move option,  as does clicking to the right of the notebook icon in the header or the three dots menu in a single note.  Drag and drop is also an option.

Thank you for the workarounds. Will give it a try.  But it still seems to be more keystrokes as the legacy version... :(

  2. I finally 'upgraded' to Ver 10. The convoluted way to move notes to other notebooks is a PITA. Also, the help files posted by EN are wrong. One (https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/209004807-Keyboard-shortcuts-in-Evernote-for-Windows) lists the 'shortcut' to move notes as 'Ctrl+Shft+M' which does not work on my Win 10 Ver 10.74 computer. The 'Alt+Shft+M' does.

But having to method is still flawed compared to the Legacy method. Filing is not a fun task but needs to done. EN has turned it into even more time consuming job. Sadly, I have no idea how to implement the 'AutoHotKey' script generously shared by Mike P.

For me I can say no.
     downloaded it directly from Evernote.com

I have the same problem that Evernote will not launch. I have recently installed the new version and all the updates. In working with Evernote today, the opening a note filled the entire screen and could not be resized. I followed advice from this forum dated in 2021 (Pink Elephant suggestion) to logout and choose the option to 'remove my data.." or something similar. Then restart the computer. Evernote now does not launch.

    Any help greately appreciated.

This is easiest way if you follow what I did you'll be up and running in no time.

Go into C:\Program Files(x86)\Evernote . In there right click and copy Evernote Legacy and paste it there it'll create a new folder called "Evernote Legacy - Copy" You'll be using this to access legacy moving forward for the side by side situation...

So after you paste, you'll have two folders one without the - Copy.. The original folder without the copy, will be removed when you update to v10.. but the "Copy" will remain as it's not included as part of the v10 clean up wizard.. it'll remain intact and this you will use for running the side by side with v10.

Don't worry about copying anything to desktop,  I didn't do that and in fact , even if you copy the database to desktop, you'll delete it later.. it's of no use. it's just backup, but you don't need it.. Just make sure in Legacy EN you move the database elsewhere PRIOR to the upgrade...

So go into Evernote Legacy > Tools > Options > under General at the bottom. Select a different drive and move the DB. This takes very little time and is automatic don't worry.. It'll move the DB to wherever you specify.

    image.png.be0092647b90a0824a7cf5c4a76894d4.png

Once you've moved the DB to a different location, and I would move it into a folder like I have , don't move it at root level or you'll complicate matters. Create a folder called Evernote on a different HDD/SDD and move it into that to be safe.

Once that's done, go to https://evernote.com/download > this will download the latest installer.

Double click the installer, it'll say we need to a cleanup/uninstall of the old version etc .. yes don't worry about this because we've created a copy which will be excluded from that process.

If you read above you'll know where the v10 install will reside, in %appdata%\roaming\evernote..

Let it do it's thing. And when you want to run side by side go into c:\program files\(x86)\evernote\Evernote Legacy - Copy create a shortcut to the evernote.exe and put on your desktop or wherever you'll be launching it from as to not waste time having to navigate into that folder constantly.. and that's it.

Legacy is a grey icon and v10 is a white and green icon :

    image.png.49e9005202638ee5bd55a31e2ab65784.png

Good luck it's not difficult at all trust me. I was worried to.. I'm happy so far with v10.. way way WAY more features and it's very smooth after it replicates etc!!!

I may even incorporate my calendar today and where have Tasks been all my life!!!! Damn!!

P.S.. Create a backup real quick before you do anything. Click file top left of Evenote > Sign Out > on the splash screen press Ctrl Shift E > export all notes desktop. this won't take long, depending on your DB..  I'd DO THIS FIRST.. it'll backup everything in their respective notebooks as ENEX files and then at least you have an entire copy of ALL your notes in their respective notebooks.. then carry out the steps above..

    Peace

My point was that (IMHO) in the last few months we've had more new features and service improvements than the previous few years.  And if you actually start using the new app you'll be fully up to speed with its capabilities when Legacy finally closes down forever.  As it is,  you'll have all the joys of learning new processes thrust upon you at some future time...

Apologies for the very basic questions here. Looks like I will finally have to update to V10. I use Evernote to organize information that becomes historical files for future reference once the project/topic is completed.

Like Kozz I am quite nervous about the update. I have used EN for more than 14 years & depend on it to maintain an organized, searchable database of my work, leisure, & volunteer life. I would like to find the step by step directions for using Legacy & V10 side by side.
One comment was to 'use new version as the web client'. The meaning or how to implement that is unclear.
Anopther suggestion was to 'copy the databases folder to the desktop as well as the installation file for legacy'. Then installing V10 will be easy... Sooooo - the V10 install will create all new program files (will not overwrite the legacy program) & empty databases etc?  How would I then be able to go back to the legacy program to access information if there were to be a problem?

I am sorry to hear that you are still having this problem @betnel. I hope you can reach out to Evernote and submit a ticket. I guessed that whatever it was, was over yesterday afternoon. Sorry to hear that I am wrong.

@PinkElephant, I forgot to mention I did check the status web page and it added to my confusion as nothing was reported as wrong on the server side. Therefore, I first reinstalled the legacy version and then installed the New Coke version.

I also checked the status and it reported that everything was running just fine. However, using downdetector showed reported problems but not a huge number. I still haven't updated to the 'new' evernote. There are so many commands that I use that were not available during the initial launch. I just haven't bothered to check if EN ever got around to adding them back. I've been a paying customer for over 10 years and the whole 're-write' of the program and it's launch was done completely ignoring the base customers. Also, their focus on iOS & their style of apps leaves us PC users out.

@denebly, where are you located? It could be some kind of regional issue. Every once in a while, Evernote's servers do go down briefly. I'm in the southeastern United States, and I can connect to evernote.com. In any case, it's liable to resolve itself in awhile, and there's not much you or we (and maybe not even Evernote) can do about it. (There is no direct email or phone support, sadly.)

I am located in the southeast as well. Today (Saturday)  I am able to at least login to this site & Evernote on the web. I had the same problems of errors on the 'server side' that started on Thursday. No page reload, etc.

My Legacy Evernote windows 10 does not sync - 10:31:09 [ERROR  ] [6796] [15788]  error: " (ENML_VALIDATION)" This started on Thursday with the above noted server side issues. All the notes entered have this same error.

Any thoughts on how to fix this without having to uninstall Evernote?

  8. Tavor - thank you for the apkmirror. site. Found it & selected download of the pre- v10 apk. My Samsung S9 will not install the apk. I get 'Do you want to install an update to this existing app?' Select Install. It looks like it is working but then it displays 'App not installed.'

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong here. I accepted 'install unknown apps' in settings. Turned off Google play security, etc. Any thoughts would be appreciated...

A 'forced' update is more to do with the Play Store than Evernote - you'll need to find the settings in your version of Android to turn off automatic downloads of updates for Evernote.  https://gizmodo.com/keep-specific-android-apps-from-updating-behind-your-ba-1683748216

(Don't just turn off updates for everything!!)

I blocked Evernote updates as soon as v10 came out on desktop,  so I still have my original set-up.  You'd need to re-download the APK and install it without using the play store,  so you need these links... http://cdn1.evernote.com/win6/public/Evernote_6.25.1.9091.exe and https://www.androidauthority.com/how-to-install-apks-31494/

(The install an older version link above is just for desktops)

I did find the auto update setting for the app after much messing around in Google - only available through the android app, not on a pc. I have found 2 sites that claim to have the old apk for EN but they both have terrible reputations for malware... Any thoughts on where to find it on a trusted site?

I'm a big fan of the v10 clients. For me they are feature-rich and quick. Yes, i've found a couple of bugs (the web client has trouble resuming when I open my chromebook and it crashes when I delete a top-level tag).

The new clients have so many really important features which were lacking before:

    1. Tables on Android! This was impossible before
    2. tag hierarchy
    3. text formatting
    4. ability to insert files from google drive
    5. support for the entire evernote query language.
    6. ability to create templates

What EN client have you been using? Android/Windows has had templates, tables, tags, & formatting in the previous version. It also was fast to load and quick to search... Two things that can't be said about the new Android app.

🤣 Defend them?  Defend them?  Evernote are responsible for the most ham-fisted, misjudged and unproductive product "update" of the century,  which is still leaking users all over their competitors.  I wouldn't wish to 'defend' their actions to anyone - just pointing out that in the grand scheme of things,  getting the heading on a welcome email wrong seems like small beer!!

Your details say your are working with the 'old' Evernote for Android. Can you tell me where I can get the 'old' android app  to replace the forced update from last week?

  12. Android App forced update. I contacted EN to try to go back to the 'legacy' android app that worked, was intuitive, & didn't take too much time to load, sort, search. Here is their response:

So we are stuck with the android app that is not quite beta quality and EN made no accommodations to allow us to undo this forced update!

    Hello Betnel,

Thank you for contacting Evernote Customer Support.

I apologize for the delay in response. We have been *experiencing a higher-than-normal volume*  of tickets. We are working extended hours and handling tickets in the order they are received. We hope to return to our normal wait period as soon as possible.

I understand that you wanted to * install the previous version of the app* because the new version of the app was slow. I respect your decision.

We actually don't have a way for you to be able to install back the previous version of Evernote for Android. We actually want to be sure that you and other customers are getting the latest features, bug fixes, and security updates.

Let me know if you still have more questions.

    Respectfully,

    Jesh P.

It's very annoying when the Evernote CEO and Mr. Designer try to fool you, by basically only sharing their perspective https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nggD3PMO0EM Who uses 5 devices with different operating systems? This is presented as the major problem that had to be solved. Most use 1 device the most by far and occasionally watch through another device (no problem there). The fact that the user interface had to become more uniform was a problem for the manufacturer, not the user !! Everyone understands that this is a problem, but predominantly for the manufacturer! That great sacrifices had to be made from the user perspective for this is unforgivable to be honest. Make sure you only release something when it's all right and not a pale shadow of what I am used to as a user. But the worst part is that the gentlemen in their 'discussion' state for everything that is experienced as a problem that it only concerns 'a small percentage of the users' (tags for example) and that only that group finds it annoying that the tags were moved to the bottom. Everything that is a problem is made small and Mr. Designer goes to 'Polishing' as second step when the number of missing or poorly implemented functions is still enormous. After 12 years as a daily premium user and over 12000 notes, I am about to say goodbye to Evernote. I can endure too little too late, because I can still use the old app, but that they try to justify the fact that they are offending the most loyal users with a badly defective product is unacceptable.

Absolutely very well said. There is a technique taught to customer service representatives to attempt to control the complaining customer. It centers on minimizing the complaint by suggesting that 'you are the only one' complaining or having this issue. Therefore, you are the problem, not the product or service. It seems like Evernote management & staff have all gone to that class!

I was being somewhat facetious, stemming from my astonishment at how Ian/EN managed this current/past upgrade & implementation.  Perhaps moving forward and in future they will realise that 'money talks' in a free economy and not just their ability to save a buck by more streamlined operations.  I mean on one hand Ian said they didn't plan and just got stuck into it, and on the other they surveyed 300,000 users.  How does that reconcile... How can they do that much research and not slice and dice the resulting data to reveal the top 10-20 features/functions desired and used, then make a detailed plan for its implementation ensuring whilst ever possible a coherent/consistent experience... and come on 3 months to do a plan... what a lot of BS.  1-3 days to get all the items mapped in a think tank, and entered into a project plan.  Seems my vent/rant continues 😉

IMHO you are entirely correct about Ian/EN comments and actions. However, this latest interview (thank you DTlow) gives some hope that functions that I use will be added back to the program. I do worry though that my work flow is not shared by a 'majority' of users and that I am delaying the inevitable requirement to find another personal productivity product. Ian clearly states that EN has used their capability to track what functions get used by how many users (unclear if it is number of users or number of uses). Those are the functions that will be 'added back'. It does beg the question - why weren't they included in the initial release?

A little history here: In a Oct 2017 interview with Cnet then CEO Chris O'Neill stated that the EN editor would be rewritten to standardize the code for all platforms. As I remember, there were some updates in early 2019 but mostly for the IOS community, not so much for PC versions. In 2018 he raised prices for premium users which allowed EN to end the year with positive cash flow and and money in the bank. Perhaps the research that Ian references was done in this time frame and perhaps there was an actual plan that was stripped down to get the product out the door. The Board replaced him in Nov 2018 with Ian. Guess his plans were not moving fast enough.

It may not be that simple. Maybe in short term yes, but in a longer perspective probably not.

Power users usually stays with a service for longer. They evangelize others about advantages of an app. They provide valuable feedback on forums. Power users are also more willing to choose the premium versions of subscriptions.

What seems to be missing here is the possibility of a revised pricing structure to recognize the different levels of users & usage. Small claims that the next 12 months will see 'shipments' equal the past 5 years cumulative 'shipments'. It isn't clear if he is talking about 'units' or 'dollars'.  A carefully analyzed price increase to minimize customer loss could make that within reach.

  16. So glad that I found this thread. 'Upgrading' to the new version is no longer an option. Several years ago EN 'improved' their product by removing several functions that I used regularly as well as did not have a working extension for Firefox. I gave in & started using Chrome and continued to request/complain about the missing functions. Some of them were reinstituted and I stopped my search for an alternative.

With this change I must find an alternative that can handle a rather large database. Please post your recommendations!
