I've been regularly and intensely using the workaround recommended by @BSR on Nov 10 and have had no issues using any type of annotation (Sierra on 13" MacBook Pro mid-2012). I will be grateful, however, to see normal functionality restored.
Thanks much! I just came here to vent because I desperately need to annotate. I was freaking out that I will have to find another sorting/filing system for my 100+ literature review papers that need to be annotated. I scrolled up and saw the workaround which works for me!
