  1. I've noticed considerable improvement in speed after switching off Auto-filing, in Personal Settings. Fingers crossed.

Aparently this option was turned on the last version update. It slows down the app, populates your new notes with unwanted tags, and in the case of web and video clippings, it clutters the note with unwanted stuff.

I thouhht it might help others avoid these issues. So check out that Auto-filing is off . (And to EN techies, pls ensure that it does not turn on by itself !)

  3. Boolean searches:

If the feature is not really needed, why bother to implement it and anounce it at the top of the list? Why restrict it to top tier account?

As for examples of searches that benefit from boolean search, I will not delve into it but just imagine I need to collect those notes with words  (A and B ) or (A and C), but not those with (A and B and C). When you've got thousands of notes and want to have a precise group to work with, it comes handy. If can also be done searching for (A and B), tagging them with X, then tagging also (A + C), then do a search with that new tag plus the exclussion of (A + B + C ), but it's cumbersome.

We used to do that, on the assumption that the search engine could not help us for efficiency issues. But now we learn that it is possible, but only if you upgrade. Well, we will not upgrade, in fact some people are thinking about downgrading.

Unfortunately, even migrating has been made more difficult by limiting the number of notes you can export to an Enex file to 50 (Something that has been quietly done and little publicised - maybe it should be advertised as another marvellous feature).

All in all, I see little space for improvement, its as if EN had lost its way.

  4. Evernote in last 6-9 months is UNUSABLE.

A simple ap like EN only makes sense if it is fast and solid. And it should be so in desktop and mobile.

Now it is SLOW and fragile. In Android it was fast, snappy, supersolid, never crashed.

Now it is enfuriatingly slow, and it likes to shut down easily when you docsomething unexpected, like swiping the screen softly, you sometimes have to start it 3 times for a simple task.

I've come to hate it when it tells me Good morning! (Please make this salute optional). I only have a good morning if everything works properly. It sounds sarcastic that the app has turned polite just when it is completely useless.

More nice things... the Android version still keeps telling me it is preparing the new app for me... come on.

Clipping?  Used to work perfectly, solid and fast, now it so SLOOOOOWWWW and buggy: And keeps adding by default 20-30 tags that I chose not. Suppose they are the last tags I've used for other notes in last months.. so it adds the drudgery of having to SLOWLY delete all the wrong tags.

Also, the fact of adding boolean searches but restricting to high level users is, well, I find it shameful. Evernote is all about searching, there's almost nothing else. We used to think that there were huge problems and complexity that prevented boolean searches. Now we learn this is not the case, BUT! we are told at the same time that we are not 'smart' enough to enjoy proper searches.... Thanks EN !

As someone has said here, this app is on the (fast) way to self destruction. I would say that there's some (dark)  interest somewhere in destroying it.

I'll end with two polite demands:

    1. Please give us the option to install previous versions (6 momths ago).

    2. PLEASE PLEASE, tell us what is the cause of the disaster. We can understand anything.

    - Has the central server changed?

    - Is the app now syncing with Google and exchanging greetings with them ? We need to know what's going on during our long waits. And one of the novelties since the revamped disastrous versions is  -together with the Good Morning-  the invitation to use Google Cal.  Is this a clue?

BTW, have you heard at EN about issues with Google and privacy ? Come on !

PS I've been on EN for almost 10y now. I'm still here because I've not had the time to research something else. Sadly.

  5. The issues are so many and wo serious that is difficult to point them out.

New version in slow, unacceptably slow.

Tags are collected and asigned by the program from no-one knows where. When clipping, you must close and reopen the note to erase all those fake tags and add the right ones.

When I clip videos from Youube, there was previously an option to clip 'only the link'. This saves space amd gets faster. You also avoid bad cluttering with incorrect stuff from the long vids page in youtube, and allows you to streamline the clipping of several related vids by joining their respective notes in the PC app afterwards. It was a VERY useful ability from previous version. Well, NO MORE.

Also when clipping Internet pages into Evernote notes, the Android app now assigns a wrong default title. (To make things worse and more weird, the title is in Spanish! though I have as default language English in all my apps).

The tagging ang untagging actions take way more time than before. I realize now that tagging is useless if you cannot do it fast.

ALL other functions are also significantly slower. I suspect that even searching has become slower amd buggier.

So Evernote, please acknowledge the wrongdoing and return to previous version. Please.

  6. With several thousands of notes, many including searchable long documents, the probability that any ordinary language word is in a given note is close to 100% Of course you can include more search terms, and tags, but the problem is that you sometimes don’t have or don’t know them. And a search condition that is fulfilled by most (thousands) of notes, is virtually useless.

So it should be posssible to make searching ‘intitle’ by default, for those that use it virtually always.

As for the possibility to include and exclude notebooks in your searches, I still think it useful. Tags and notebooks are not the same. Tags are faster and better for notes that are spread over a range of locations and contexts. But they are prone to the ‘too-many-results’ problem. Imagine for instance you have a tag added to all your ‘interesting’ notes. it is a legitimate tag, and one that probably many users have. Well, unless you add further tags or more search terms, it is hadly useful at all, for it could end up hitting hundreds, or thousands of results.

That’s where notebooks come handy. You use notebooks to classify information items that are separate and you will never need to treat as related. For instance, you have a ‘Work’ and a ‘Private’ or ‘Home’ notebook, because you are fairly sure you’ll never need to mix them. When you are working and you search for your ‘interesting’ notes with the corresponding tag, being able to exclude your ‘Home’ notebook is a bonus, since you are effectively reducing the size of the result set by leaps and bounds.

  7. While aknowledging the logical limitations, still the web-based Evernote manager is very important for users’ mobility and for the much underestimated community of Linux users. So please, keep up in you efforts to make it a practical Evernote-managing tool. The main limitation I find most often is the inability to do something to several notes at a time. Clicking on mutiple notes with CTRL- and copying, tagging or merging them would be a nice improvent.

  8. When clipping in iOS, why there is no possibility to select ‘Whole Page’ or just the link with the title, as it does in Android?

The same happens with the in-built iOS browser AND with the Youtube app. I do a lot of clipping from the latter, and it does a horrible job downloading the whole page of un-related, irrelevant videos that clutter my note and make it nearly useless.

  9. Since this is not a relational app, the main limitation for a hard user is the over-abundance of results in most practical searches. A definite overhauling of search capabilities is in order.

Remember this is a database, so it is all about searching.

Many ideas are already proposed, to which I subscribe, but the main issue is to improve its searching capabilities to make up for he inherent limitations bound to the core design of the program. And with an eye on the far-sight purpose: Making search results more succint and relevant.

So a ‘minimal’ set of improvements would be :

    1. Boolean searches overall. Including the property of belonging (or not belonging) to a certain set of notebooks.

    2. A SEARCH CONTEXT MODE, with two options: ‘Global’ or ‘Titles’ should be available, and easily changeable from the search screen. Currently, when you search for the word ‘conference’ for instance, too many results appear, which makes is useless. Again, the main drawback is now that it gives too many (irrelevant) results, due in part to the fact that it searches everywhere, even inside pdfs and pictures... It can easily be checked that most searches are done by current users with the ‘title:’ keyword in front of the searched terms. Making it easy to select ‘Titles’ as the search context (as well as allowing the user to exclude a set of Notebooks) would even decrease the computing burden for the engine (!)  This should be combined with adding an optional ‘global’ keyword in the search string command (analogous to the ‘title:’ keyword, and with opposite effect). So even when you select a ‘Titles’ context for your search, you should still be able to include a global search for some particular string with ‘global:<String>’ .

    3. With the result of a search, you should be able to apply another search that applies only to the particular set of notes you have obtained, to refine and trim the result of the previous search. This is very important, with an impact on the ‘too-many results’ problem and improving the usefulness of the whole application. Of course, it is equivalent to a boolean combination of several search orders, but being able to do it sequentially streamlines the retrieval process.

Additional improvements could be made to empower the notes-linking capabilities. Ideally, from any note you should be able to enter a search mode for locating several notes in your folders’ hierarchy and by just clicking on them (control-click for multiple select) the link(s) should appear under the cursor with the note title as caption. (of course while doing that, you should not loose focus on your working note)
