  1. Hi, I do see high CPU use when these problems are occurring. Typically when EN is misbehaving the CPU time is between 35% and 85%. Sometimes when I’m not doing anything with EN the CPU is elevated and sometimes it’s only ~1% or 2%. I've been leaving EN running all the time to give any background conversion the chance to complete. Now it’s been almost 2 weeks and the problems are still occurring. My PC is running Windows 10 ver. 22H2 and has an Intel i5-6500 3.2 GHZ CPU with 16 GB of memory and all drives are SSDs. Everything else works fine. I have more problems. At random times I get the message Window is not responding: Relaunch or Keep Waiting. If I relaunch sometimes the message pops ups again, and sometimes it just keeps popping up. If I choose Keep Waiting the message usually pops up again, although occasionally it doesn’t. Meanwhile the app is completely unresponsive. Maybe once or twice a day I get the message Something went wrong and we were unable to sync your latest changes. This typically happens when I go back to view a note that I haven’t touched for a day or two so I generally have no recollection of what was lost. It seems there’s no way to find out what was lost or recover it so I’m faced with losing some of my work and I don’t even know what. It occasionally happens on my phone too. This is terrible! No app should be randomly discarding my work! I can’t keep using EN if this can’t be corrected. I tried the web browser client. I see even worse performance with larger documents with max CPU usage around 35%. I don’t see performance problems with smaller notes or random spontaneous high CPU usage. Also I haven’t seen the Windows is not responding message or the weren’t able to sync your changes message. I wouldn’t be able to use the web version regularly in any case because I often have multiple notes open simultaneously and the web version doesn’t support that. I submitted a support request on 4/2 and so far have received no response. I provided the best description of the problem I could muster and included a log, screenshots, and mp4 of the typing test. Can anyone advise what I can do to get the attention of support? I’m at my wits end dealing with this. I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Mike
  2. Hi, I decided that large files might be causing the problem. Performance was so sluggish on v.10 that I couldn't work there to test. On a laptop that still has legacy EN I made a bunch of notes starting with the note that had problems on v.10 with each one half the size the size of the previous one down to a 150 KB note. I exported them to enex format, moved them to my desktop, and imported them into v.10. I then tested to see how size related to performance hit. To my surprise every one of them ran fine with no significant problems, and the original file worked fine too. For now I'll watch to see if the problem returns. I'll try leaving EN running overnight to see if that makes a difference. In any case it's comforting that I can keep legacy on a different PC to edit a note that can't be edited on v.10. So I might be fine and I might not, depending how v.10 acts. Thanks for the github backup reference. I looked at it before and gave up (without trying too hard) when I found that you needed to install and learn about several apps just to support the EN backup app. Now maybe I'll try it again. Thanks, Mike
  3. Hi gazumped, I've been busy with other things and so am just getting back to this. I've found that tiny documents seem to work ok but larger ones often don't. Beyond the typing echo delay other things aren't right: a note takes a long time to appear and then it's another min. or more before it's responsive. The whole app seems sluggish and nowhere near as responsive as legacy. Not to mention the "Something went wrong and we were unable to sync your latest changes" message which happens maybe once a day. And since the sync process is now hidden there's no way to ensure that changes have been committed. And since they've hidden the sync process there's no way to ensure that changes have been committed. I wanted to backup my notes before uninstalling & reinstalling. With legacy I backed up by selecting all my notes and then exporting, but now I can't because the new EN only allows selecting 100 notes at a time! Since I have over 2,800 notes that's not very helpful. Is there any way to export everything all at once as with legacy? Doing 29 exports doesn't sound like a reliable or safe way to backup. I finally exported the last 30 notes changed, but that's not a long term solution. I uninstalled and reinstalled as you suggested. Immediately after it still ran slow but we'll see how that works out. I'll leave it open all night. Thanks, Mike
  4. Hi Gazumped, Thanks for the offer. However for now the worst problem has mostly gone away. The fonts seem bigger and the interline spacing is still excessive but the worst problem, line spacing didn't change when font size changed, is gone. I looked around and couldn't find any way to fix the interline spacing. I still find it frustrating that Evernote windows (list pane and note pane) waste so much space while all my other critical apps (Thunderbird, Excel, Word) use conventional spacing, but I'm guessing that this is not configurable. If it is I'd love to hear about it. There’s another problem that is intermittent but extremely aggravating when it happens. Sometimes the echoing of text just stalls, sometimes for up to a minute or more. I have no idea when it will happen. Luckily I just tested and it happened again. The echoing got so far behind that if it had been real work I’d have just had to wait 30 or 45 sec. to see or edit what I typed. Every other app I run echos typed text instantaneously. An mp4 file is attached. I'm running Windows 10 ver. 22H2 build 19045.4170 and Evernote ver. 10.81.4. Thanks, Mike Evernote Typing Test 2024-03-27.mp4
  5. Hi, I just was forced to switch away from legacy and am adjusting to the new product. The first thing I noticed was that the fonts display larger in the new product, which is surprising since I thought that size of the legacy fonts were accurate. I also notice that the interline spacing is much greater. Should be no problem I thought, I'll just decrease the font size. To my surprise I found that reducing the font size reduces the size of the characters but DOESN'T reduce the height of a line. If I change the font size from my previous 13 pt. font to 10 pt. I save no vertical space at all, the space between lines just goes from extreme to useless. The overall effect is that I see much less information for a given screen area. I estimate with 10 pt. font I loose 33% horizontally 33% and vertically. Consequently for a given screen area I can view only 44% of the information I could with Legacy. I already wish I had a bigger screen and spend time moving around windows to see multiple notes/documents my screen. Seeing 56% less makes this problem worse. Please tell me there's a way to make fonts behave as they did in legacy (not to mention other text editors like MS Word and other products that allow specifying fonts). Thanks, Mike
  6. Since v.10 I've had sync fail much more often. Sometimes it takes more than an hour or more for sync to be successful. And sometimes after I make a change on v.10 on Android it takes several hours for any images in the note to come back on Legacy on my PC, or worse yet they never come back. I could go on but my point is that sync has gotten unreliable in a lot of ways (I won't bore you with the others). Hopefully it's because they didn't pay enough attention to legacy users to ensure they didn't just sort of break legacy, and with all v.10 apps these problems will go away. However re your problem I just synced my 6.25.2.9198 Legacy EN and it worked fine, and I've had no problems today.
  7. I don't have time to track down the source now, but my understanding is that with v10 if you export a notebook you get only some of the notes, and the reason is that only recently referenced notes are stored locally. If that's incorrect, or if using that option ensures that ensures all notes are exported, then that would be great.
  8. The notice says that "older APIs" are being removed. Does that mean that the ability of other note apps to import notes from Evernote will no longer work? Does it also mean that backup tools that use Evernote APIs to create full backups (e.g. Backupery, cloudHQ, Evernote-backup) will no longer work? As I understand it v10 enex export doesn't export all notes in a notebook, just the ones stored locally, and so we'd loose the ability to fully backup our Evernote data.
  9. This has happened to me several times since May, then once in September, twice in October, and again today, and is completely unpredictable. I know, I can recover my documents from a previous version, but that's getting old. This is infuriating! I've given up and now and will use a link to the file on my desktop. I haven't seen that fail yet. That works only on that ONE device as long as I never delete the file or change it's location or name, but it's better than having documents randomly disappear. I'm tired of using a tool where I work for it instead of it working or me. I really wish that Evernote would do a little more testing before releasing a new feature into the wild. New features (instant update here I assume) are fine but not if established basic features are broken and information lost. It's hard to see how Evernote can survive if it continues this behavior.
  10. Hi, Using the Android app exclusively I created a note about how another app works. I typed some into the note, switched to the app to see how it worked, switched back to note, watched the note reload, clicked Edit again because the edit mode had been lost, typed some more, and repeated that a bunch of times. At one point I saw an error saying that there was a duplicate note. When I was done I noticed that I had 8 notes with the same name. Apparently each time I switched between apps a new note with the same title and contents was created. I'm guessing this is a bug, right? Or does this serve some purpose for someone? In any case I'd like to get it to stop. Thanks, Mike
  11. Hi, I've been avoiding moving to the new EN on both Windows and Android because of the features that were dropped. However I recently got a new Pixel 7 which forced me to move to the new Android app. I mention this because I don't know if it affects my problem. I created a new note using the legacy Windows app that included pdf documents and pnc images. When I viewed this on the new Android app the pdf and pnc documents and images did not display. I tried syncing both apps, verified that I had a fast internet connection, and fooled with it for a while but couldn't get it to work. Just now maybe an hour later when I started writing this note did I find that the images and documents finally showed up. Is this a regular problem with the new app? Do the images always show up eventuality or do they sometimes never make it? Thanks, Mike
  12. Earlier someone suggested that you can use the Legacy and new versions side by side. You can, but be aware that if you edit a note in the new app all the image indentation information will be stripped out of the note. When you edit again with the legacy app all your images in that note will be moved to the left edge.
  13. Hi agsteele, Please share! How can this be done in v10? I've been using Legacy because of this (and one other missing feature) and would love to get a step closer to upgrading to the current version. Thanks, Mike
  14. I disagree. Say what you will about Windows, it's done a great job of maintaining compatibility with earlier OS versions. I'm still using MS Money from more than 10 years ago and it works fine. The end will come if they decide to change the protocols they use for interaction between the servers and clients and they don't want to maintain support for the current protocols. That's a complex enough task that they may never decide to undertake. Of they may just decide to kick us to the curb for some other non-technical reason.
  15. Personally I'm not concerned about the Win11 upgrade. I've been running MS Money on Windows since 2009 with no problems. One thing Windows is good at is maintaining compatibility with earlier applications. In any case I backup everything every night to multiple media using multiple products just to be ready for the next catastrophe from the blue that is always a possibility. I'm much more scarred that EN will just arbitrarily pull the plug on the older versions (Windows & Android) and provide the same helpful and generous warning that they did when they released v. 10 which still lacks features that have been around for years that people rely on.
  16. CalS, Thanks. That's just what I was looking for. I can't check it now but when I get back I'll make sure the file and folder you mention is on the P: drive. When I leave the machine I log out so P: has to be reconnected when it's turned back on. Mike
  17. gazumped, I used the option "Evernote Local files" on the Evernote General tab which apparently specifies the location of some local files. It takes a path that by default is set to something like "C:\Users\Mike\Evernote". There is no external volume involved. I use the VeraCrypt feature to create an encrypted pseudo-drive that has a drive letter (I use P: for private) assigned to it. The encrypted information is stored in a big file that I can put anywhere on my 😄 drive. When I start the PC I enter the password that allows P: to be accessed. The "Evernote Local files" option is set to "P:\Users\Mike\Evernote". If someone starts my PC or removes the hard drive and views it they can't view anything on P: if they don't know the password. When I poke around looking for Evernote files I see lots of them in P:\Users\Mike\Evernote and also at C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Local, C:\Users\Mike\AppData\LocalStorage, C:\Users\Mike\AppData\LocalLow, and C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming, and there may be others. My question is if the various files on 😄 contain notes or portions of notes that could allow someone to view information in my notes. Mike
  18. Hi, I want to improve security on a Windows laptop that has Evernote installed to reduce the exposure of my information if the laptop is stolen. The best approach would be whole disk encryption but the machine is so old and slow that I don't want to slow it further. One thing I've done is used the Evernote Local Files option to store Evernote files on a VeraCrypt encrypted volume. That will protect information controlled by that option but I see that some information is stored in other locations on my C: drive. It's not clear what is stored where and so I don't know what is protected and what isn't. Can anyone tell me how effective this approach is? Specifically what information is controlled by the Local Files option and what is stored on C:? Thanks, Mike
  19. AFAIK there's no way to do this. I have auto update disabled, and every morning I go into Play and individually install every update except Evernote. It's a pain but it beats the alternative.
  20. Never mind. My mistake. The list of apps indicates what apps are allowed to sideload an app (typically a file manager), not the apps that can be sideloaded. Once I enabled the file manager I was using to sideload Evernote it worked fine. Sorry for the false alarm. Mike
  21. Hi, This morning I opened my Pixel 3 phone and saw that my Evernote Legacy app was spontaneously updating to the current version even though I definitely DON'T want it because it strips certain formatting information from my notes. So I deleted the new app and tried to install the legacy apk. I was then blocked by a message that says I'm not allowed to sideload apps even though I previously enabled that option and have sideloaded before. I then tried to set the option to allow sideloading (/Settings/Apps and Notifications/Advanced/Special App Access/Install Unknown Apps) where previously there was a single checkbox to enable sideloading. But now there's a list of apps with a checkbox to enable apps individually. Evernote isn't listed and there's no way to add an an entry. Unless I'm missing something it appears that Evernote has just taken away our ability to use Evernote legacy on Android! Mike
  22. Eric, thanks for that, but I don't follow. I do have the left toolbar open. If I've entered search text, what do I do then? When I click (or Ctrl-click or Alt-click) on a tag the search text disappears, so how do I add the tags without clearing the text search? I did find another solution, sort of. You can do the text search first, and then use the Add Filters icon to add tags from a list. That order is unintuitive to me (I prefer setting where I'm searching first) but maybe some will prefer it. However I still don't see a way to use shortcuts with a text search, which is a big loss for me. Why remove the more intuitive (Ctrl-click is a standard for selecting multiple items on a list) method that everyone is familiar with? Any why remove the ability to use Shortcuts with text search altogether?
  23. Hi, In legacy Evernote I commonly select one or more tags (via the tag list or shortcut list on the left panel) and then search for text within those notes to get a list of notes I want to examine. Specifically I click on a shortcut that specifies the tags and then type into the search field. This is very efficient: click the shortcut, click to position the cursor in the search field, and then type my search term. When I naively try this procedure with the new Evernote it doesn't work. If I click on the shortcut I see the matching notes as expected, but when I type in the search field my tag selection is discarded and ALL my notes are searched. If I try reversing the process, i.e. search for the text and then filter via tags, it fails in the same way. The text search searches every note as I expect, but when I specify the tag filters the text search is ignored so I see ALL notes that match the tag filters. I tried using the search field tag: feature to specify the tags in the search field with the search term. That works, but it's not practical because I must type way more and remember all the tags and type them all in. That makes searching so much more work that it's not practical for regular use. I've searched the online documentation but can find nothing about this. Please someone tell me how I can search using both tag and text criteria that doesn't require that I type in all the tags manually but rather lets me select the shortcuts and tags from a list. Thanks, Mike
  24. PinkElephant, I've sent in a lot of support tickets. For the last one I sent 7 emails, tried some things they suggested but didn't help, generated a log, and recorded (using an application I had to install on my PC) the actions that caused the bug. In other situations I've also sent in an Evernote note that I crafted (to avoid exposing personal information) that demonstrated the problem. In this and other cases after a long series of emails and work on my part they've agreed that the malfunction exists, and then said they won't fix it. I think they're making a diligent and competent effort, but nevertheless when I report a problem I have to be prepared to invest a significant chunk of my time and effort and at the same time realize that there's a good chance that the bug won't be fixed. Sometimes it just doesn't seem worth it. Mike
  25. On the Android main screen the number of notes that can be listed is smaller than it could be because there's so much wasted space. On my Pixel 3 even if I turn off all view options (tags, text, images, note size) I nevertheless see only 6 notes listed. This is not enough: I often need to scroll some to find what I want and so I'd like to see as many notes listed as possible. The sad thing is that there are 2 empty lines for every entry, so 6 x 2 = 12 empty lines on the screen, which if removed would allow maybe 2 or 3 more notes to be listed. Why do we need 2 blank lines in the middle of every note entry? Particularly on a small screen device this seems like a terrible visual design choice which is completely unnecessary.
