  1. I'm sure that's it... I was preparing to uninstall everything Evernote... I got the non-legacy version uninstalled; removed startup Evernote stuff and started to work on the Legacy after I rebooted. Was messing around with other stuff for a few when suddenly I realized that Legacy was running and behaving nicely. I verified that every notebook was backed-up to an enex type file and did the search that prompted me to start up Evernote to begin with... I also removed the clipper. It's been running for 36 hours now with no issues. I will start the migration over to One Note soon. There is a program around that is supposed to convert enex files to One Note. I haven't tried it yet but hopefully that will suffice as I convert one notebook at a time. Failing that, I'll try to clear out stuff I no longer want or need and move stuff over manually... one notebook a day or so.

    Thanks for your help.

Actually I am running both clients side by side on my Mac, and have the same installed on my PC (which I don’t use much any more). No such thing on both - legacy and v10 coexist without any problem.

Looks like a bad install has happened, makes no sense to speculate why.

Because traces of each installation will persist when uninstalled using the regular uninstaller (as is the case with most programs), it is recommended to use an uninstaller app to do a thorough job. For PCs Revo Uninstaller is recommended in the forum.

If you run any local notebooks in legacy, make sure to have them backupped yourself before you uninstall.

Well I uninstalled the Non-legacy version and now my legacy version is trashed - actually the program file folder has nothing in it. I may have lost everything... sigh

  3. I'm getting a strange UI so I may not be responding to PinkElephant as is my intention. I am definitely using the Legacy version as it is so marked when I open it.

It seems as though I should uninstall Evernote completely from this computer and be sure to ONLY reinstall the Legacy version. I have stopped adding notes to Evernote as I am switching to One Note for anything new. Hopefully I can get most of my EN notes moved over, but I have 10 years worth (over 20,000) so this is going to be a major chore of filtering out stuff I don't want. I'm chin-deep in Red Cross work preparing for the upcoming hurricane/fire season so this won't happen quickly.

Thanks to both of you for your help.

Is the program trying to launch our its it attempting to install?

From your description it seems that you have both versions installed. In that case, if you don't use Evernote 10, best to uninstall the new version.

That may be the problem... I'll check. However this only started a month or so ago and if it got installed, it wasn't intentional on my part. I've been using Legacy on this computer for a few years... ever since Evernote came out with their so-called "new and improved" edition a few years ago. I had hoped I could continue on with Legacy, but this latest phenomenon ends up taking over my computer so not only can't I use Evernote, but I can't use any other application. I'm using a recent Intel processor, 32 GB of memory and an SSD 1T drive so this behavior is quite alarming.

  5. I really tried to figure out how to utilize LN for personal info and tasks, but once I was no longer a (then) IBM Business Partner (2001) and thus no longer getting free software, I had to abandon that dream. If you ever come across something similar (esp with workflow included), please post here. I've followed you. As a Red Cross volunteer, I'm looking closely at the MS Sharepoint suite of inter-related products and I think I'll be able to cludge something together with them although I can't have my personal data store on the ARC servers so I'll have to see what's available retail. It is so bizarre to be using MS products again after being so critical of their pathetic attempts in the 90's to compete with Lotus Notes! Here we are 25 years later!

Why is this a concern for today?
I'm currently using the Legacy product and have no switching to an alternative for the immediate future

First off, the legacy app has so many bugs, TMTC, and obviously they won't be fixing any.

Secondly, it is only a matter of time before it will no longer be available. I use the premium version which requires a subscription and certain functions that they could drop at any moment; In fact the entire sync function is totally dependent on their servers and their support. You're in a dream world if you think EN, the company, will lift a finger to ensure that these services go forward.

I believe the reason is the emotional bond many folks have / had with evernote. the frustration we all hear - besides the legitimate criticism of the stripping of many features, the general sluggishness of the V10 apps and the communications ***** up around it - is part of a grieving process and a feeling of loss. I know this clearly sounds odd for a piece of software / a service, but it also shows just how dangerous evernote's ***** up could be to its economic base. only time will truly tell, but what's been going on here since the release of V10 is troubling to say the least...

It has to do with how much time and effort we have put into EN to have it really alleviate a lot of pain in handling our information needs and desires.

It also has to do with the tremendous challenge of researching and choosing an alternative and then moving 10's of thousands of documents, notes, etc. over to a new system.

I was a Lotus Development Business Partner before I retired. I loved Lotus Notes; consulted with clients; developed various workflow/business processes with it. If there was any way to use it as a personal tool, I certainly would today. But, sadly, it isn't affordable for personal use. Then I found Evernote and it satisfies my information needs. Now, after years and 20,000 notes, I have to go through that process all over again. I'm sad and really pissed off.

I agree with many of the complaints about the new Evernote. During this 10.x experience, I have tried a number of Evernote alternatives for the Mac.  None of them have a decent web clipper (it's the first thing I test).  Evernote's web clipper is the absolute best that I have found.  But Evernote has not abandoned us.  I just re-installed Evernote Legacy for the Mac and I am weeping with tears of joy!

Evernote Legacy feels much faster. I can search all my notes from the main window.  I never have to open the Sidebar which takes up valuable screen real estate.  Links in notes open with a single click.  Legacy opens new notes with the cursor in the Title field.  Legacy lets me change notebooks in two clicks without having to open the Sidebar.

If you have issues with the new Evernote, reinstall Legacy.  I have been a Premium customer for eleven years and Evernote is crucial to my workflow.  I  migrated 8000 journal entries from Day One (a Mac-only app) in April 2020 to Evernote.  I am now journaling every single day in Evernote on Windows and Mac.  I just wanted a single place for all my notes, web clippings and reference material.  Evernote is that place for me, a university instructor.

The good news about Legacy is that you don't have to migrate all your Evernote notes to use it.  It runs alongside the "new" Evernote.  Speaking of "new", I liken the new Evernote to "New Coke", if you get the reference.

Evernote is receiving a lot of criticism about their new app, and frankly they deserve quite a bit of it.  However, in their defense, Evernote is still the best at what they do, they gave us a way to escape the tyranny of Evernote 10 with Legacy and it is still quite easy to export all your notes when it is time to leave.  I am grateful for Evernote and continue to use it every single day.  I have tried most of the others.  Most of them don't hold a candle to Evernote FOR ME.

I say that while we provide honest and useful feedback to Evernote about the new app, we must give thanks and applaud them for the greatness of the Legacy app.

    Thank you, Evernote Legacy!

I appreciate your post and agree re: the web clipper.

I read a post from an EN employee that said it was impossible to install the legacy version, but then, by chance, I found a link to it so that's what I'm doing. I already had it on my other computers (but getting rid of two of them). I'm a long time Premium user so I was shattered by the idea that I had to suddenly switch to another tool. I would love to know what template you are using for journaling.

    Thanks for your valuable post.

Hello, and welcome to the forums. Please search in the forums dedicated to v. 10 regarding performance, notebook colors, etc., which are already under discussion there: https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/forum/720-evernote-for-windows-issues-versions-100-and-above/ and https://discussion.evernote.com/forums/forum/731-evernote-for-windows-requests-versions-100-and-above/.

Why? because I didn't find those in a search... What I'm wondering is why wasn't it easier to get to them.

  10. What really shakes me up is this: how is it that Evernote, the company, didn't know that it had a user base that tolerated crappy, buggy releases for nearly a decade and who would cry when they realized they had to get a divorce?

Didn't anyone there realize how valuable having a user base like that was? My immediate thought was that another company had taken them over.

    Maybe we were a cult?

I'm now going through the stages of grief.

The only scenario that makes sense for Evernote spending people and money capital to produce such an abysmal product such as 10.x is that they were taken over by an investment group that wants to see its demise... reminds me of what happened to a superlative computer manufacturer, TANDEM, a few decades ago. That computer ran circles around IBM and others. Now just a few grey-hairs like myself remember it.

I'm not sure how this can relate to the Processor, RAM or internet speed. I'm using the same machine and same internet to compare V10 and legacy. (Ive got a good machine. Internet is average at best)

Ive been working with V10 some more this morning and its only confirming my initial reactions. Slow, clunky and missing a lot of features that I have previously relied on.

To be fair the actual note taking function seems much improved and the rendering of web page notes and pdfs seems better. Overall its not an improvement for me though.

I'm sure different users will be impacted differently as there are so many use case scenarios for Evernote.

For now I have reinstalled the legacy app and am running it alongside V10. I'm remaining hopeful that Evernote will improve with coming updates  (I really don't want to change app) but I'm also now keeping my eye open for alternatives.

    Found this earlier.

This guy is brilliant and offers great insights on the future field of note taking; thought organizing, and collaboration. Along with pointing out the obvious DOWNGRADING OF EVERNOTE in its 10.x release, his major criticism is that Evernote, the company, DOES NOT LISTEN TO ITS USERS. To me, that is a death knell. The whole point of a product like Evernote is to enable the productivity and effectiveness of its users and if it is making decisions counter to that principle, then it might as well start making kid's video games. I poked around last night and every time I found a post from an Evernote "leader" I found them saying "Tell us what you think." and then closing down any opportunity for user feedback (i.e. the reply option was locked). That says it all. Plus 10 weeks to get a response from the tech support staff. Be Patient? Are you f'g kidding me? Hire more people or release a product that has been adequately tested. I spent 40 years in software development from being a lowly programmer in 1965 (yes, I'm an elder - 78 yo woman) to leading project teams developing major systems for major firms. I'm totally clear what it means when you can't keep up with customer complaints and technical issues. Give me a break!

How do you reinstall legacy. I cannot use the newest version. It is really horrible... modern design? give me a break. I don't use Evernote to win beauty contests. I used it to get stuff done.

  13. Thanks.

    Progress so far:

    • DB is downloaded from servers.
    • unsync'd notes have been imported and now sync'd (just finished).
    • The unsync'd notes all lost their Notebook designation. I had hoped Evernote would have changed that quirk. I recall this from years ago. I guess the only way around this is to create a special tag for each Notebook that shows what Notebook it is associated with. What a PITA. That's 301 notes that I have to reassign now.

    Saroj

  14. @PinkElephant - again, thanks for your help. The db download is now at 17,227 and still cranking.

I don't own any Apple products... I have had too many apps that would only run on Windows-based computers (not that I'm any big fan of Microsoft, mind you) and iPhones cost too much for my budget.

sadly the G.S. passed on Friday... totally unexpectedly... no known illness...The White dog in the pic (also a Chi-mix - Jack Russell) died earlier this year after having dementia for 3 years. Now we're dogless.:(

  15. so it looks like the root of my problem is that my database was messed up. I had 301 un-sync'd notes going back to 2014. I was given instructions on how to rebuild the database from Evernote servers and then import my 301 un-sync'd notes into the new db (which I previously saved and set aside). It has been downloading my notes for well over an hour now... it is up to 13,006... I didn't think to note the total prior to removing the corrupt db, but I'm guessing I had close to 20,000.

I'll let y'all know the outcome.

  16. Thanks for your help, PinkElephant. I apologize for being so crabby... I've been on chat with Evernote support for well over an hour trying to resolve issues... just very frustrated and have a lot still to do today... plus really stressed out due to another of our family dogs passing unexpectedly on Friday... a gorgeous G.S. imported from Germany... the absolutely best dog one could ever hope for... beautiful, very very smart and had a absolutely wonderful disposition..His best doggy friend, my Chi-mix, passed away a month ago. so sad... again, thanks for your help.

There is a sync problem with the latest release version, 6.19.2.8555. I think it's especially problematic with large file sizes (lots and lots of 4k+ screenshots are crashing/freezing/losing data with my Evernote). This update changed something with splitting the save file and I think it's having problems with large files/photos. Small text notes seem to be fine.

Ask tech support for a previous version. 6.18.8489 still works correctly.

Tech support says the problem should be fixed on the next update. For now, uninstall 6.19.2.8555 and install an older version. Turn off update reminders to keep Evernote from pestering you to update to the 6.19.2.8555 problem version.

Thanks... I'll see about reverting to that version. This one is a royal PITA.
