  1. OK, thanks, I will try that. I won't know if it works until the next time Windows updates but I'll do that now.
  2. Interestingly, it just happened again. I was definitely using EN this morning, then needed to restart Windows for updates. When it restarted, EN was gone again and i had to download and install again and now it's rebuilding all my notes. It's not my antivirus program as it's definitely tied to Windows updates.
  3. yes, I was able to re-install and it downloaded all my data. I just wondered what would suddenly cause it to be deleted? Pink Elephant - it was my home laptop that deleted EN so no IT involved, just me. My work one is fine, just did the auto-update thing. I looked for a way to turn that off but didn't see it. I generally do accept updates but often I'm in a hurry to get some piece of information from EN, esp at work, and don't want to wait while it downloads the new one, installs and then finally opens. I prefer to get my work done and then accept the update. most software will tell you there is an update and ask if you want to do it now or wait.
  4. Evernote suddenly deleted itself on my laptop. One day it was there, the next day it was gone with no evidence of having been there at all. The start menu link was gone and when I searched in programs, there was only an empty EN folder. I think I did have some Windows updates recently but it seems like I'd used EN again after that, as generally I'm in EN almost every day. Anyone else have this happen? On my work laptop today I tried to open EN and it immediately downloaded the newest update without even opening the old one and asking me if I wanted to, but the start menu button was still there. With my home laptop there was nothing to show EN had ever been there other than the single empty folder. Both are running Windows 10 with all the most recent security updates.
  5. Oh, that makes sense now! I was defaulting to using the top Move button since it was that way in the legacy version. I thought it was weird that EN would have changed multi-move and no one else had complained!
  6. And now, to make things even worse, I find I am unable to move more than one note at a time? I normally go through and select several related notes then hit move to send them all to a particular notebook. It lets me tag several at once but when I choose move, with more than one selected, it says "moving 1 of 1 notes" and moves only the first one. What is up with that?
  7. I guess I can see this, Dave, although it's very rare that it happens to me and I usually notice it right away. I rarely limit searches to a single notebook so it's not going to cause trouble retrieving it if I accidentally send it to the wrong notebook. I would still prefer the drop-down menu (as well as moving tags back to the top alongside the Notebook button)
  8. I am trying to retrain myself not to click on the notebook but to hover and find the move notebook button. However, can EN at least bring back the dropdown menu when you do click on the Move notebook? Instead it has to open up a whole mini-window with the notebooks listed, you choose it and then still have to click Done. With drop down it's one click to open and one click to choose and it's automatically done. That may seem petty, 2 clicks instead of 3, but when you have a lot of notes to sort it makes a huge difference. I import everything to an Inbox and then tag and sort them into notebooks (yes, I use both tags and about 6 notebooks)

  10. I"m not the OP but I have a similar question. I am using Windows 10 and EN 10.58.8. I checked the EN folder under Windows and it has over 7 GB. What is being saved locally? I thought everything was saved to the cloud unless you specified local notebooks? Within the EN folder both Temp Files and Local Storage list the same 7.11 GB I only recently upgraded to EN10, was using the legacy version until a month or so ago. Is this leftover from then and can I safely delete and/or do I need to something else? I am limited on SSD space, am down to 12 GB free of a 250 GB drive (older laptop) so will be moving more of my music and photos off once I can get my external SSD to upgrade its software and start working again. But I'd still like to not be using so much for EN if possible.
  11. LOL, fair enough! Still 3000 pages *seems* ginormous so I can certainly understand the appeal of being able to search it quickly using Evernote.

For personal files such as your Schwab account or credit card statements, you could keep a copy of your ginormous pdf on your hard drive, append the new one each month and then save a copy to Evernote for searching, each month replacing the previous giant one in EN. For a giant database of business client info, seems to me that's what practice management software is for. But you could still probably work around in EN by doing the same thing I mentioned for personal files, except you'd have to combine them daily and add to your local copy and then upload, etc.
  13. I completely agree here. I was in on some of the beta versions and ended up uninstalling them b/c they were so buggy and lacked features I was used to using on a daily basis (import folder for one). Since v.10 was released I've kept with the legacy version on my PC but did use the web version to see what all the excitement about the home page is. I do think it's a big improvement over the previous web version, which I rarely used because it was so ugly. However, my android phone EN app says it's up to date yet there has been no change at all. I have the latest version of android so I don't know why it won't upgrade. I use EN much like the person in the video above - for my (veterinary) medical resources and most recently while working on my master's degree. I dread the idea of migrating but if they stop supporting the legacy Windows app and force upgrade to v.10 I will be moving on as well.
  14. I don't know about Mac, but my web version was still the old one. I had to click on something under my account to change it. Try looking there.
  15. Since I"m the one who asked about how long V.6 may be around, my main concern is that as they continue to develop the new format, my legacy copy on Windows might at some point not sync. I wasn't implying they would do it behind my back just that some link might break and I would lose notes I'd saved on the web client for example. I do 90% of my work through my Windows desktop version 6 at home but use the web more when I am at work. I have had Evernote lose a whole batch of about 60 notes a few years ago during an upgrade and after more than a month of working with support, never was able to retrieve them. Luckily they were not absolutely crucial but still missed. I am not at all tech-savvy as far as understanding API and wire and all the other things mentioned above, just going by prior experience. I actually kind of like the new home screen on the web client - the old web client was really ugly and awkward compared to the Windows version. I will be watching to see whether they bring back the Import folder which I relied on heavily for batch imports of pdfs and photos.
  16. I'm on the legacy Windows client so this may not apply but for me it's right click on the tag and it brings up the options. Have you tried that?
  17. Same here. Any news on how long 6.25.1 will still be working? I have avoided updating after trying out the beta version and not being happy with it. Already, the sync button no longer works, although the syncing does appear to be happening in the background. Not sure if the import folder is still working either.
  18. Yep, I did the beta testing and removed it after about a week. I'm back to using 6.25 with no plans to upgrade until I see a lot of improvement in the new version. The import folder and sync button were the big deal-breakers for me. If I'm forced to upgrade at some point due to lack of support, and it hasn't improved I will be moving to another platform, after at least 8 years of solid use.
  19. I have both Legacy and Roots Magic, the free versions, trying them out before deciding which works best for me. I tried a few others as well. I know they can do a lot of things but I haven't had the time to really delve into them well enough to do much. I just imported a gedcom that I saved from Ancestry, where my main tree is (trying to get away from depending on Ancestry) I'm on Windows and android, or I'd check out the Mac stuff you list.
  20. Just an update on how my system is evolving. While I still maintain my tree in genealogy software, along with attached media, I'm using EN more for research notes. Possibly I could keep all that in the software as well but I'm still not very familiar with all the facets of that, while I'm pretty used to EN. Plus, I have EN available on my PC, tablet, phone and even on the web from a friend's or relative's computer if need be. As an example, I have brick wall ancestors, my paternal gggrandfather and gggrandmother, who seem to have fallen from the sky on the day they were married, with no previous history on either one. So i have this page below with various notes I've made to myself and then links to websites or other notes which support what I have written:
  21. Actually that's a perfect example of why tagging works much better than nested folders. On my work computer I have my own C drive and the server's "P" drive. I make documents and save them in a folder on C but then have to copy them to P for others to view and use. To get to where I need to put it, I have to tunnel down through P:/spay-neuter clinic/animal care/rounds/2019/June. If I want to view a file in one of those nested folders I have to do the same thing (and many of them go deeper than just 5 levels). But if I use the search function it will usually bring up the correct document if I know the exact title. More often, I know part of the title and my search brings up pages of documents that may have a few words the same. Tags in EN enable me to quickly run a search for ONLY things with that tag, not things that may have that word somewhere in the title or document. No one is saying tags are the ONLY way to go and you MUST use them! But those of us who have tried them and given it a fair shake often find it works better for us. your mileage may vary of course and you are free to find software which does what you want. FWIW, when I started with EN years ago, I too wanted nested folders and made a ton of notebooks and stacks to emulate that. It didn't take long to realize how much time i was spending putting things in the correct notebook, or remembering whether I "filed" it in "Work" or "School" since that overlaps. With a few tags I can now find it for either purpose.
  22. I just let Firefox update and it's disabling nearly all my extensions, including Web Clipper. When I search for it in the add-ons and try to add it back Firefox tells me it can't download as I have no connection, which is not true. Did you have to re-add the Web Clipper or did it work automatically for you?

FWIW, I have done the opposite of what you were planning to do in the original note - I use Google Drive during the semester as it's an easy way for me to keep my notes for each week's module in Google docs and then in folders on the Google Drive. I also have a lot of articles I have to read as part of my courses, so those are also filed as pdfs in those folders so it's all together. AT the end of the semester I export each document as a pdf and tag it with the course name, semester and year and then put into Evernote so everything is searchable for the future. I have one notebook which is just for school work (my masters degree), one notebook which is a home/personal filing cabinet, and one for articles which I use in my work on a frequent basis. I don't keep the school work in separate notebooks by course but just rely on the tags
  24. Just thought I would post how I am using EN for genealogy research. I've been using EN for many years but just started with genealogy last month. While I keep my tree in genealogy software, I have been making a note for each ancestory that I am researching. The title of the note is the full name and year of birth and death (to easily distinguish between multiple ancestors with the same name) I have these in a notebook called Family History, and in the note itself I list research details I've found, along with their source (census, etc). I then save copies of those sources like birth certificate, etc as separate notes but then merge them together. I tag the note with just the last name, so I can easily pull up the notes associated with that line of descendants. I can take pictures of grave sites or documents which can't be scanned and also attach those.
