QNAP and Synology are maybe the two biggest fish in the NAS pond - there are some more, like Terramaster. I would avoid WD Mycloud at all cost, and QNAP for the last 2-3 Years had a row of security incidents that make me doubt they have an eye on OS security.

Disclaimer: I run some stuff on Synlogies and know them pretty well. Of other brands I have more of an outside view.

hmmm good comments - thanks - maybe I will have another look at Synology - and also Terramaster

Synology note station can be useful for some users, but it doesn't cover all use cases EN offers.

Plus you keep in mind it's local storage. To access it from the road, you need to set up a safe remote access, knowing how to. And you need to run your own backups.

For Synology users there are possibilities to install a true DMS as well. But again, it won't cover all use cases. Storing documents, fine. But adding comment and mix content like it is possible in a note - no.

    yes true

I bought it just over 2 years ago. I had a small WD NAS that had promise, got me hooked on the idea of a good NAS, but didn't quite have the power for what I wanted. After a lot of time researching, I went with Synology, and happy I did. My main use has been to use it as a Plex server (an app that let me stream my video collection to any TV with access to the app). I can also watch video when away from home, on a TV, my phone or iPad. Second use is to backup from my computers. Not cheap, but was worth it, in my opinion. You can look and see if it's for you. Many, many apps run on it, depending what you want it to do.

Yep, I had a look at Synology - looks great. I also looked at QNAP - looks brilliant too. Wow, some amazing apps that comes with these NAS products including home security. I suppose I should look at what DAS's are all about as a compromise on cost to complete my due diligence....but really, I just love the idea of a NAS - as I say, I love  the look of all those juicy apps!!!

But I suppose we are getting off topic now - someone is no doubt about to pull us up on that - fair enough too I suppose...lol

That was the issue, choosing the app. I loaded Synology Note Station and quickly found that it did not show PDFs the way EN does. For me, that's a deal killer. Then Joplin. Better, but the view was cut off, i.e. the PDF image is there, but only 1/3 or so, instead of viewing the full page at a time. Raven, AppleNotes, a couple more, and no luck.

I realized, I should have listened to the advice to contact EN and ask what my renewal rate was. The replied quickly that my price will not change. I am at $45/yr. Every member seem to be getting different offers. In my case, I think I'll be with EN for a while. (And still just shaking my head that this one feature is so tough to find)

Thanks for the heads up re Synology Note Station. I had no idea that existed and based on what I have read about it just now I think that could be a good option - for me tagging and clipping from webpages are more important than how pdfs are displayed and Note Station seems to do that well.

Although I guess you need to have a Synology NAS to be able to have access to that.

It seems the leading NAS brands have their own note apps and they do appear quite good so this makes me think that EN is going to really have to lift its game as those NAS apps will obviously keep improving. And also more and more people will presumably go for having their own personal cloud as costs come down. Folk will like the idea of increased storage space as well as freedom from potential insecurity with traditional cloud storage as well as lack of speed (especially for video and multimedia), not to speak of ongoing costs

So since you first mentioned having a NAS setup I have gotten all excited about using one ...lol...but so many options and so much information it is doing my head in ...lol....but the pain could be worth it. And now, the Synology Note Station is yet another variable in the equation....eek!!!!!

By the way, I was paying AUD (Australian dollars) $9.99 a month and this has increased to AUD14.99 - an exact 50% increase. However, I have juts looked at the current EN pricing table and the month to month plan (which is what I am on - for Professional) is now $22.49!!!!! A 125% increase. And even if you pay annually it still works out at AUD17.50 monthly. So at $14.99 per month I suppose I should be happy. So yes you are probably right about pricing varying for each member and it probably depends on how long you have been a paying subscriber. It is interesting though that they told you your rate would not increase AT ALL

Actually,  you're not - there's no extortion here,  because at any stage you can downgrade your account to 'free' (being cautious of the limitations on note size and access),  so you still have access to your current data.  You could then open an account with any competitor and use that for all new notes,  manually copying across any history that you need for that particular transaction.  It's also possible to export all notes to ENEX,  HTML or PDF files to use the features of a new provider to import your original data to a new account.

It's entirely up to you.  My take on the new owners is that they're a dynamic team with some grand ambitions to improve Evernote - hence the price increase.  I have enough faith in their expertise to have ponied up the new cost of my Professional subscription,  and I'll continue to give them the benefit of the doubt for the next 12 months at least.  If things are as chaotic then as they are now...  well this might be a different conversation.  But assuming things have settled down - I'll be quite happy to have paid a reasonable rate to help the company keep on going strong.

Thanks for your comments. It's a tricky one to be sure. Certainly if the price had doubled I would probably still hang in there - but be actively looking for alternatives at the same time

The problem with "workarounds" lies on the tagging side. Tagging is at the heart of using EN - as the content is used for writing and research purposes. Even Microsoft One Note is a lot weaker in that area I think. AND EN is unquestionably superior in importing content from the web

The way I am feeling right now is that I may well have to give up one weekly cappuccino and keep EN ...lol. Having said that, I WILL be expecting some of the syncing and stability issues (not to speak of content vanishing!!!) to be addressed by EN as a matter of urgency - as well as clear and obvious ongoing product development

I can't help but wonder how many customers are at the free level? And what their cost is to keep these customers.

I've been paying for some time, $45/yr, and I don't even recall why I made the jump. Only that the paid version felt like it was worth every cent for what it offered. So in my case, using it for free for a time got me hooked. But, at $130/year, I'd have stayed with 'free' and kept looking for other solutions. Now, I own a NAS and self hosting my own cloud to replace Evernote leaves me enough $$ to also have real cloud backup to avoid a disaster. Asked, 'so, given they left the price the same for so long, what is a fair price today'? I'd say $75-$80, tops. Maybe it's an emotional thing, but cracking the $100 price point is tough.

That all sounds interesting. I like the idea of a NAS for use by home computers. I'm not sure about cloud self-hosting - a bit above my pay grade I feel.....lol------was it all hard to do? Perhaps you are a hard core techie?

And are you saying that with your new setup you can dispense with EN - but what app would you go to?

Not necessarily true.  There are several options out there depending on your OS that will import from Evernote.  There is a lot of information in the forums on alternatives and people's experiences with them.

OK - thank you for that - perhaps I should do some homework then to prepare for a possible defection from EN - something I never thought I would do - but as they say, "never say never"

  8. Super annoyed with this price increase - which I describe as GOUGING

AND considering that there have been so many instances of late of content that I type into notes simply disappearing - AND whole notes that do not get saved, AND Evernote not syncing properly with the Brave browser via the web clipper, that I am seriously considering ditching Evernote once and for all. It would be a drastic and wholly undesirable thing to do but when you have no confidence that your content will even be saved, what choice is there really?

The price increase is in essence extortion because it is not as if you can simply export your notes into another application. I have over 31,000 fully tagged notes. This means I am joined at the hip with EN for life whether I like it or not

  9. yes, I agree. This is probably Evernote's one big weakness as a company - they seem to live in another dimension - one divorced from its user-base. Ultimately it opens the door to more competition. No company will endure unless it engages with its customers and sets expectations properly

  10. To be fair, it was a good letter. The problem is - it was way overdue. But as he admits, their biggest error was in not alerting users to what was coming in the new release. This was just bad bad bad.......but at least they admit it and I doubt they will ever repeat that mistake.

it was like waking up one morning and finding ourselves on the moon - not a nice feeling

  11. This is an outrage. A few days after Evernote upgraded itself to the dumbed-down new version, I noted that a critical Exc el Spreadsheet that I have had completely vanished.

I have spent half a day starting to reconstruct this and I have just noticed that this has now disappeared as well!!!!

This is totally unacceptable. How on earth will I and other users know what OTHER information is vanishing as well?????!!!!!

And of course in the new dumbed-down version you cannot even do local backups - so I have lost my data - gone, finish

Just brilliant Evernote - thanks - NOT!!!!!!

  12. As of this morning it is FINALLY working for me again n BRAVE (I haven't checked the other browsers). This is within 5 minutes of turning on my computer. I have tested three Youtube videos and it worked each time. It may stop working during the day again but at least this is the first day this has happened :) :) Happy Days again possibly

  13. My Chrome is now ALSO suddenly working!! It must have updated itself in the last couple of hours although not sure how as I have not restarted my system).

The interesting thing that has come out of this though is that I now agree with CalS in that the new Edge seems to use a lot less resources than Chrome or Brave. So I think I may continue to use Edge until Brave becomes less resource-hungry
