  1. Hi all. I hope everyone is making the most of the latest features. I’m checking in today with an exciting announcement about a new widget that unlocks Home for many power users like you and a recap of the recent features we’ve rolled out that will help you do more of the things that matter most. First, the big news: We're making Home a destination for our power users with the new filtered notes widget. This is rolling out with Evernote version 10.20 (Mac and Windows) and 10.16 (iOS and Android) starting today. This widget (available with Evernote Personal, Professional, and Teams) makes it easier to see the content you need at a glance by choosing from a selection of filters, such as all notes with a task, all notes with a specific tag, saved searches and many more. It’s a new, meaningful way to keep all the content for a project, class, or workflow simultaneously front and center from the moment you open the app. We've outlined a few key use cases for power users, including GTD, workflows, and multi-project management in our latest blog post. To add the filtered notes widget, simply click or tap “Customize” in Home. Professional and Teams users can add more than one filtered notes widget. The filtered notes widget is our most recent feature designed to improve your Evernote experience. In case you missed it, here’s a recap of some other updates in Home we rolled out recently: Calendar widget - With this widget, you can connect Evernote and your Google Calendar to bring your schedule and notes together. Create notes for calendar events and access them quickly later, view your schedule(s) and event details, and open Google Calendar with a click —all from the calendar widget in Home. Tasks widget - Stay on top of it all by adding the Tasks widget to your Home dashboard. See your top 15 tasks, create new tasks, and edit or complete them—all in one place. Only tasks assigned to you show up in the widget. Add multiple versions of the same widget - One of your most-requested features is here. Level up your Home customization by adding multiple versions of the pinned note, filtered notes, and scratch pad widgets, with a maximum of 12 total widgets in any combination. Change the scratch pad color and title - By popular request, you can now change the background color (choose from pink, yellow, blue, and green) and the name of your scratch pad widget in Home. You can make these changes by clicking or tapping “Customize” in Home and then clicking or tapping the pencil “edit” icon on the scratch pad widget. Create new items directly from Home - The notes, tasks, tags, and notebooks widgets now have an icon at the top-right, so you can create a new entry with one click, right from Home. I look forward to hearing from you as you explore these new features. And, if you missed the latest from Ian Small, our CEO, you can read it on our blog. Take care, Shane Note: Different features are available with different subscription levels. Click here to learn more.

  2. In my understand a note taking app should assist me on the go. That means the UI should react and perform at the speed of the user (writing, clicking, drawing). In 2021 this is standard even on low end and middle class Android devices...and it was until EN8.13.3 with Evernote as well. But with EN10.X: Look at the Android apps of OneNote and Google Keep. Compared to EN10.X they feel like out of another universe regarding responsiveness and speed. As a user, I strongly wish Evernote for Android would close this gap in performance as soon as possible and to become the assisting app again I loved for years. I would encourage everyone not satisfied with actual performance of the 10.X app to give a vote as well. Thank you 🙂

  3. As a workaround, you can create 2 word processor documents, and use the file comparison of these programs. MS Word can do it, or if you want a free solution take LibreOffice.

  4. Checkboxes have not gone and in addition there are now checklists. The only problem is that unless you are careful EN will convert checkboxes to checklists. The check box is available from the blue + insert menu. However if you pit it at the beginning of a line EN will convert it to a checklist so you need to add another character first. I personally use the short cut <space><open square bracket><close square bracket> I personally like checklists for many things because I like the crossing out of text and the ease of dragging items around to reorder them.

  7. Updated to the latest version (android, mobile) to quit getting the notification but wish I hadn't. Not only is it buggy when I try to edit (freaks out and starts rapidly scrolling up and down, frequently won't allow me to select text, etc) but a new 'swipe to close' feature has made even trying to just read notes a challenge. I'll be reading a note and accidentally scroll the wrong way and the note will close, forcing me to reopen and scroll back through long documents only to accidentally close it again moments later. What's more is that this function is incompatible with template tables, rendering them unusable. Is there a way I can disable this feature?

  8. Hi. First comment - you may want to change the tag line for this section: "If you have feedback related to the older version of Evernote for Windows, post here!" (my emphasis) - I think you mean the new one? Some questions arise before I update my current version 6.25... Is there a "step back" option? - i.e. once updated would I be able to revert to my 6.25 version if the new app is not performing well? Local (unsynced) notes are no longer supported - do you still store local copies of the notes synced with the server database? I ask because I use Backupery's app to export my notes to ENEX on a daily basis and I'd like to continue to do so after updating. For anyone wary of updating to the new version - how long do you forsee support for legacy versions continuing? Will there still be bug fixes and updates for those versions? Presentation Mode is something which is very useful for academic users - is there any prospect of this coming back / some sort of integration with a presentation app? Another service I use is Postach.io - will that app continue to be able to convert my notes to a blog? I can work around the Outlook Clipper no longer being supported (there's still email!) but the list of unsupported features in the help page says (again my emphasis) Can we expect an exhaustive list of 'no longer supported' features anytime soon?

  9. At first glance, I thought, meh. But after digging into it, I think it will be pretty good, especially after hitting my "Maximum Widgets." By using a "Home" tag, this widget could replace Notebooks, Shortcuts, and Pinned Notes. Anybody else have a use for the FNW? Edit: After drilling in a bit, it's not quite as flexible/powerful as I thought, but it does give me six "pinned notes" in one Widget.

  10. Not sure why this isn't persistent, but it would be nice if it didn't play the UX version of hide and seek.

  12. My data is not safe (at least to me) until I have a complete useable backup sitting on my HD that does not require Evernote to open it. And, Notion appears to be pulling in my Evernote data directly thus skipping to 1 Notebook at a time limit for exporting. (Although it it taking its sweet time on the notebook with 900+ records...) The HTML files was: 1. Choose the 904 record notebook. 2. Export as individual HTML files 3. 904 Sub-dirs were created with 1 picture in each. A few appear to have a file named "Evernote." (no extension) in them... ... and upon further review, 904 directories DOWN the list shows the HTML pages. OK, so the HTML export exported the pages AND also created a directory FOR each page where ... graphics and ... some other data was stored in a few of them. Yeah. HTML export is not going to be a viable backup solution. I will look into Notion and others... TY!

  13. I have used the "Move Task" just for the purpose @PinkElephantmentions. Since a "Search for note" dialog appears after choosing "Move Task", one thing this topic got me to try that I had not before - searching by tag vs. note title or note content. No luck.... perhaps in a future release.

  14. There are no tasks outside of a note. Either the task is inside of any note where you assigned it, or it automatically goes into the default tasks note where tasks without notes are collected. For tagging a task it o my makes sense when it is assigned to another note, not to the default.

  16. I don't want to repeat myself but: Have you done this?
    1 point
  17. Yeah, I agree. I have never had any problems finding anything in EN, and I've never used tags. The efficiency of the search fonction is such that I have never even considered the use of tags. I still like to see tree-categories, the visual aspect of it is nice. I don't blame EN on what it has, it is all super good. But since they have a place on the forums to suggest things I thought I just might use it, and it was a good idea cause now I've learned from DTLow that tags can be used as a "parent-child hierarchy", which actually does adresse the issue !

  18. Thanks for your help. I was trying to hold Ctrl and use the scroll on the mouse as this is what works in most Apps. Ctrl + works. Happy now - thanks.

  19. Yep that is the worst customer service... We want to know if you are working on this. It's okay if you need time, but we want to know that it's in the making and maybe what is the actual issue you identified.

  21. I have both devices that can run Evernote 10 and devices that can't, so I often move between modern and legacy clients, especially with an older tablet I have that's stuck on Android 6 and thus is stuck with the legacy client. As such, I often go between the modern and legacy clients, sometimes forgetting to sync the legacy clients, and that's how I usually end up with note conflicts. So far, I've ended up with 2 note conflicts, and both are long notes that I have trouble comparing in split-screen on the desktop client on Windows. I can't show the notes in screenshots as they contain information for unpublished projects I'm currently working on. As such, I would like for the desktop clients to have some sort of comparison tool, not only for Note History, but for note conflicts too. (Edit: I forgot that the desktop clients share code with the browser-based version, so I feel that if this gets implemented for the desktop clients, it could transpire to the Web browser-based client too)

  26. Downloading 7.000 notes took 3 nights. Later I learned I could have taken it easy: iOS does not search in pdf (or other) attachments when offline, only note text content or direct web clips. Most of my content is attached pdfs, fully OCRed. Even this doesn’t help with searching. Even low expectations can be too high … But OK, we have a train strike at the moment over here. Maybe they stop the trains long enough for EN to add pdf offline search before we can travel again 😷

  27. So much this. A few years ago, I could open Evernote and instantly start capturing all sorts of stream of consciousness ideas, solutions, etc. Even with a few thousand notes. Now, I start it, and by the time I've updated and synced and can actually do something, I've already lost the train of thought. Oh, and a bunch of new notifications have arrived to distract me. Even without an update, it's painfully slow. And I can't leave it sitting open because of the memory leak issue I've experienced (bringing my 32GB system to its knees until I killed the Windows process).

29. I have been an Evernote premium subscriber for a number of years now. Evernote is becoming increasingly more aggravating to use. I am using it less frequently now, maybe once a day or every two days. Here's my perception: 50% of the time when I start up Evernote on my Macbook Pro, it immediately prompts me to download and install an update. I get it. I have worked in the software product industry for nearly 30 years. As a paying subscriber, I'm glad Evernote is actively being updated. As a fan of agile methodology, more frequent, smaller updates is more appealing than big bang releases, to learn if things are working and to get improvements out quickly to your customer base. Often when I start up Evernote, I get the spinning green circle that indicates it's doing something. For like 30 seconds. While it's doing something, I can't. This happens about as often (and may coincide with) when it wants to do updates. After updates, I am often forced to see what's new. Here's the thing, Evernote Product Management Team: When I fire up Evernote, it's because I want TO DO SOMETHING. Right now. In fact, I'm in the middle of doing something when I fire up Evernote, and I need it to be a tool that I use in context with the task at hand. I want to quickly enter or update a note to get something out of my head that I'm thinking about right now. Or I'm in the middle of doing something and I want to look up a note that I made for just this occasion, when I need to remember something that was important. Instead I stare at my phone or my Macbook Pro screen and wait. For 30 or more seconds, after the application has started. Evernote now looks like the chief product person thinks it's a destination, rather than a tool that I can quickly pick up while I'm in the middle of a task and use it to help me complete the task. It's missing the mark.

  30. Agree that not updating my card is on me. Completely. I still think that they ought ask "hey - we had a problem" before locking me out with Basic. They might have millions of paid users, but the failed payment number would be nothing like that. They could automate a nice email, and hold the downgrade for a few days while the customer could respond. Anyway - won't be a problem in a short while. Cheers

  31. The tag vs notebook argument has been going on since EN's inception. If you need multilevel hierarchy, you use tags. Simple as that. For my use with 12K notes over about 11 years, I have rarely used tags, have many notebooks and stacks, and have rarely been unable to find anything quickly. The search capability of EN is such that if you dumped everything into one notebook and used no tags at all, you could still find what you needed.

  32. The Evernote database uses a Tag table to store information for Tag records There are fields for: Tag Id Tag Name Parent Tag Id In the screenshot from my Mac Tag 3 is a "parent" of Tag 4 Tag 4 is a "child" of Tag 3 >>Is there a way to use tags a visual parent-child hierarchy ? The screenshot shows the visual tag hierarchy Tags 1,2,3,4 can be seen in visually >>If I missed something about how to use tags please do elighten me You mentioned being limited to Stacks and Notebooks Notebooks and Tags are fields in the Notebook record For organization purposes, simply assign a tag to a note As a bonus, multiple tags can be assigned

  33. Evernote 10 is an unmitigated disaster that was forced on users without any sort of consideration for how TERRIBLE it is. Electron is garbage and is known for performance issues.

  34. You have likely exceeded your device limit. Go to your account settings, tab devices, and revoke so many devices to get at 2. If you want to connect a new one, the count must be 1.

  35. Just an atrocity that an important function like this one that was offered in previous versions of Evernote has just been removed in v.10. Now you have to search on both Spotlight and Evernote to locate your information. It is a blasphemy really. And this happened not only in macOS but also in iOS!

  36. I am now really fed up with this *****. It used to be a great note taking app with a ton of useful features & good performance. Now they are just adding more & more unnecessary features that has increased its pricing & has made it too much slow & laggy. It's just about yesterday when I was getting the error 'Sorry, we’re having trouble loading Evernote' & I had to uninstall & install it multiple times to get it work.

  37. +1 to what @PinkElephant said. Definitely appreciate the need for this feature, but we won't have it out in the next 2 weeks @Zach Rieker.

  38. I have the same problem with technical words that are part of my industry domain. Can you explain the logic why "learn spelling" works sometimes and not others. By your estimate it doesn't support 20% of cases, which IMHO 100% sucks.

  39. I am continuously bothered by spotlight not searching evernote. Slows me down and makes me have to hunt in multiple places whenever looking for anything. At least 10 times a day I have to fiddle around to find things I could find instantly when spotlight could search Evernote.

  41. For over 10 years that I have been using Evernote I have loved that you could come back fast to the notebook and note you were previously working on when opening the app. SInce the last update to v.10.8.2 you have decided that we want to start in Home when we open the app without asking us and even worst, without letting use choose if we wanted this change. Please give us the option to start the app in the latest notebook used as it has been since the start. Many of us do not use or want to use your new Home page. If you have decided to invest resources in things like Home that the vast majority of your user base didn't ask for it is your own (wrong) decision, but please don't try to shoehorn things like this into our workflow, the only thing you do is alienate your user base. It's puzzling how you dedicate resources to things like Home instead of working in really useful features like e.g., a way to create an in-note table of contents with internal note hyperlinks, something your user base have been screaming for almost since day 1 and that your competition offer years ago.

  42. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 6. I use the Sketch Mode to take notes. I zoom in and out using pinch and after a few pinches and and out, the mode freezes and I can ot take more notes. I can still move the image around and I have to close and save and open up the note again to continue. Please advise as this is not a workable situaiton for me.

  45. Yes, isn’t that sad, tags are one of the most useful and powerful features of Evernote Classic played down in this way, I felt they were belittled by Ian, virtually laughed at by him in that interview. We moved them down to the bottom of the screen to save screen real estate, rubbish, they take up more room down there and it’s inconvenient to have to look up and down, top and bottom just to process your notes, one after the other. Instead they should be elevating them, trying to get more users to find out how tags could transform their workflows into something wonderful instead of just using Evernote like one massive standard filing cabinet. I don’t think the current management know how to use Evernote properly, they are so new to the company.

  46. + 1 This feature-gap is even more annoying with the new / 10.# EN web version: If You delete the image which is automatically chosen and shown in the note's thumbnail/snippet view or even delete all pictures in the note and add a new proper one the new picture won't show up in the note's thumbnail/snippet view of the EN web version. Instead of this the unwanted old thumbnail sticks with my note in the thumbnail/snippet view ...

  47. The new Evernote for Windows 10 is an EPIC FAILURE! Just bring in more formatting options and headings to the old evernote and thank you. That whole HTML5 interface is a disaster and lack basic features like toolbar on the top, takes 10 seconds to open a note in a separate window, delete key doesn't work anymore, new note doesn't open by default in new window... Luckily I had the old installer saved on my desktop

  48. I'm glad @witherford found some kind of solution, as I note above. But this really should be part of the UI. One of the notes shared with me is from someone who I happen to know for a fact is no longer even an EN user. Kind of absurd that this note "sharing" relationship can be so involuntary to the recipient of the note. Seems more like Note Injecting, rather than sharing. Sharing implies both parties agree to the thing. And that should extend from creation all the way through to deletion. I'll have to see if this has already been a requested feature somewhere (if that's even visible. I'm not sure). Anyone know? If not I'll look later. This has already consumed too much time but I want to see it get resolved so I guess there's no stopping now.
