  1. I've been living in a bubble, I guess and knew nothing about the "new" Evernote, and have been happily using the older version. Today it more or less forced me to upgrade to 10.4.4 and Holy $%^^ this is awful! The search seems better, but I cannot find a single other thing that I like about it. It's slow, my note fonts are suddenly HUGE, my tags no longer show the note counts, etc. etc. Went back to the legacy version which appears will only be supported for a limited time 😲 If the legacy app stops working for me I will switch to some other solution, and I have been a paying Evernote customer for 10 years! I suggest you scrap this version, restore the older one and go back to the drawing board.

  2. I guess the thing is I have always mostly used Evernote for filing documents and webclips. With good tagging its been a very efficient tool for information storage and retrieval. Now it seems hopeless. For example I just dragged a PDF into a filtered selection of files (filtered on a tag). It took at least 20 seconds to load up and it was not even apparent when it was done as the new file did not inherit the tag as it was copied over. Previously this would have been done in less than a second. Also this morning I have been searching for invoices and payments listed under the same tag. Firstly there was a delay to view the filtered selection, then it was taking up to 30 seconds to open each file. With the previous version this would have been a process that would have taken seconds not minutes. I'm sure if I mainly used evernote for just note taking then I would be super happy, but this update seems to have killed the value of Evernote for me. I hope these are issues that are already on the developers radar and that they are addressable?

  3. Just updated to the latest version of Evernote. Why is it so slow! Prior to this update pages opened instantly. Now its a wait so long that that is not helpful at all. I hope this is just a temporary issue - maybe the data is loading up in a new location on my HDD? If not then Evernotes usefulness to me has been significantly diminished. Also - previously I seem to remember being able to change the location of the local storage. I don't see that option anymore. Any reason for this. Evernote has for several years been a central part of my work organization and productivity - these new changes are concerning.. Any intel would be well appreciated

  5. This new version of Evernote is almost unusable for me. Less functionality than previous versions. I've used Evernote for about 10 years. Several of the previous updates have made it slightly less functional, but this update keeps all the frustrating features of the past, adds new ones, and makes life particularly frustrating. I use Evernote mostly for archiving and tagging pdf notes and clipping webpages. Any suggestions for alternatives ?

  6. I've been a loyal user of Evernote for many years now, eschewing the Microsoft behemoth for some more open source alternates. Evernote was a bit of a compromise, but at least it wasn't MS. So I await new developments with interest. This last one seems to be a disaster. So far I have found the following issues with Evernote 10 that render it unsuitable for my use. I use Evernote as my journal/to do lists/note taking application to pretty much manage my life, and as such ease of use is important, as is customisation and personalisation. It is the application in which I spend most of my time. And it has been brilliant. So far, after an upgrade to version 10, I find the product sorely lacking for this and am seriously considering alternatives (for Windows and Android). Even to the point of test driving OneNote, Joplin, Notion and a couple of others. Key for me is the ability to use my own fonts within the app - while I know these will not convert on Android, I deal with that. Most of my time is spent in Windows. Right now I can't even change the default font from the half dozen that are available. So, in no particular order : 1) while you have moved the ability to delete/rename/edit the notebook to the second column, why not retain it on the first column anyway? I'll live with it, but even so... 2) there are no preferences available. So I can't change my data location (might be important), defaul font, or, indeed, anything. Evernote is no longer flexible or customisable. Critical. 3) You've limited the fonts available. I use my notebooks to reflect me (as notebooks) not just to record data or clippings. So the ability to personalise fonts is hugely important for me. Critical. 4) You've introduced 'Recent Notes' on the left but with no ability to hide it - so a bit of screen real estate that limits the number of notebooks I can see at once has gone. Same for shortcuts - why can't this go back where it could be - at the top. Highly desirable. 5) You've removed right click from the LH column, but kept the drag and drop behaviour that often resulted in a notebook being moved to a stack where I didn't want it. Missing a trick there - a confirmation would be helpful! I'll live with it 6) We've lost 'Print Preview' so now the only way to preview a note is to save as a PDF via PDF writer. Critical. 7) What's more we now have a fixed format of printed note.. what if I don't WANT the header on the note ( I rarely do, and I had this turned off in preferences)? Critical. 😎 You've added an extra click to the process of viewing an encrypted note. Since the most likely reason for viewing an encrypted note was simply to view it, not remove the encryption, this should have been dealt with a different way.Highly desirable 9) Once decrypted we can't just edit the note. We have to decrypt the lot, then reencrypt it. Really hecking irritating. This is beyond disastrous. This whole release has just messed up a good product without actually adding anything of value beyond the ability to choose highlighter colour (we can do this but not choose our font?). You've stripped out some of the ease of use features and the things I actually liked. The more I use it, the more I find things that are either missing or have been made worse. So. I've reverted to 'Legacy' (a tacit acknowledgement that some users are going to be less than happy). I'm currently investigating alternatives to EverNote and will be leaving the paid programme if I don't get some assurances that these things will be fixed. Knowing that this is as good as my primary day to day application is ever going to get is a real downer. [Apologies if this is in the wrong place but you've got a very dissatisfied paying customer here, and I am not alone]

  7. I used to be able to select all notes and export to create a backup. The Version 10.4.4 build 2096 public does not allow this. How can I export all the notes? What conceivable reason would justify not permitting a 'select all' function? To backup several thousand notes I would have to perform scores of operations. I have found maybe thirty or forty individual problems since this new software was installed.

  8. gazumped, thanks for introducing me to Filterize. That may be the ultimate answer for me. I will definitely check it out. I'll also watch the video. I really appreciate your help. 10gallonhat, depending on what I learn from the video and Filterize, I may well use your idea. I may be able to select 50 notes at a time and paste their links into a new note I would call my new TOC. With luck, maybe Evernote will decide to fix this themselves. Again, thanks to you all. Len

  9. Evernote Gods, PLEASE reconsider the discontinuation of the outlook clipper! While I understand that this app wasn't perfect, it allowed for a very efficient work flow. I've been a user of this product since 2013 (premium user since day 1), and the outlook clipper is a daily part of my life. Unfortunately, the other options (add in or email) are not suitable as I'm on exchange on-prem and email doesn't work great when I'm offline as well as the fact that I need to remember to go back into evernote finalize the note. PLEASE listen to your users! we want Clipper back!

  10. Thanks for this. I will have a closer look in the forum to learn more. However, My first impressions of this new version of Evernote are that it is not an upgrade at all, at least for the way I use it. I guess I need to be patient for a bit but for sure I'm now looking out for an alternative platform

  13. I've been pointing people to 25guy's list of Evernote alternatives. The short answer for those happy to live in Apple's walled garden seems to be DEVONthink. For the rest of us our best choice greatly depends on the features we consider essential to our workflow. My use of tags and text formatting is rudimentary when compared to the way others here use EN, for example, so Joplin is at the top of my evaluation list. Others in this thread have found Joplin's lack of <X> to be a deal breaker and so are looking at other options. I have yet to hear of an alternative to EN that won't take some adjustment and/or compromise by the user.

  14. So, I received a letter from support. Basically a lot of copypasted yada yada without any meaningful answers (funny, there *is* a button to focus on a single note, which I finally noticed, but I did it myself; not a word about it from support). Still, I strongly believe that all of us should WRITE TO SUPPORT and TWEET with @evernote mention about our problems with new version. Do not write just here. If I understand anything about corporations, it's the only way for public opinion to get into their reports and/or their attention. I'm not talking about spamming. Write about your way to use Evernote, be constructive and elaborate. Tell them about your existed workflows they kinda forgotten.

  17. Why why why would you change a perfectly good user interface and totally complicate it? This new version does not make it easier to create a note or to change the notebook for the note. It makes it harder. It requires more touches. There’s also a massive White space in the main note View. Who made these decisions? Why don’t you consult your user community before you did this? Evernote used to be the easiest app on my phone to use and now it is one of the most complicated. I hate the new version. In addition to this, as I have stated before, it’s absolutely unacceptable that you allow foreign devices in other countries to login to people’s account without a challenge if the evernote account owner has not enabled two factor authentication. You should never ever allow a foreign device in a foreign country to login without a challenge. Totally irresponsible and you are opening yourself up to a major lawsuit.

  18. Sadly I have v10 installed and can't 100% remember what the option was called but I previously had Evernote on my Windows 10 PC set up so that the main window only had 2 panes, the sidebar and the middle pane where you can select to see the note cards and I had the option set to disable the rightmost pane that shows the content of the currently selected note. I think that option might have been something like "Show note contents (or preview?) pane" or something like that and it was probably under the "View" menu in the previous release but I can't find it anywhere now. If I wanted to see the contents of a note on my previous configuration I simply double-clicked on a note card or hit new-note to pop up a new window for the note. Now all that the rightmost pane does for me is waste screen space and make my main Evernote window look cluttered. You offered the option to hide the note preview (rightmost) pane in the previous version so please, please (pretty please) implement that option in this latest version.

  19. First I really appreciate Evernote being such a great product. I'm thankful for all the time and effort in developing this tool. It's been great...until the recent update. Let's be frank: it's a complete *****. The new look is so awkward and does not allow the same amount of customization. When you magnify the note, it magnifies the panels too. Seems like the whole thing is on HTML!? I know little about software design, but this is more terrible than my grade 12 programming project. It's also slower than the legacy version, too. The shortcut keys don't work any more. I can't switch accounts quickly or use two accounts at the same time. I mean, it's fine for me cuz i know how to revert back to the old version. But there are a lot of people who don't know how to do that. It's so so irresponsible to release such a terrible formal version and ask people (many are busy business people) to update to it. Evernote. you are going to lose a lot of customers this way. You will also decrease your rating in app store. I don't know who decided to authorize this release. This is some of my opinion. Again, appreciate the effort though. Keep improving! It is a fresher look than the old version. I believe in you!

  21. I am using Apple operating system macOS Catalina. My mistake was upgrading to Evernote 10.4.4. When I went hunting for online help, it said that creating a TOC note in excess of 50 was not supported. I would love to find a workaround. I am using Evernote in a business setting and created a workflow that requires an updated TOC note every week. So it is not a matter of inconvenience to me, but a serious problem for the organization. I wish I had the legacy version back. It was supposed to save the old version of the app but did not. I also have the option of using Time Machine. Regardless, thank you, DTLow. I need to learn about dynamic note lists. I do know that if I accidentally pulled down Merge instead of Create TOC, it would be a mess. I also appreciate gazumped's interest in helping me. In probably the ugliest workaround ever, I shared the notebook with a friend using the legacy version of Evernote, and she created a TOC note for me. Ugly but it worked. Thanks, Len

  22. This is indeed very annoying for long term users - especially when you pay for the service! While I have robust automatic and manual disk backups in place for my Mac, no easy access to Evernote's databases is a ridiculous exclusion.

  24. I assume you are refering to this: I think that is actually referring to a different issue. In 10.4 if you filter by a tag and then remove the tag from one of the notes it will never update. You need to clear the filters and start again as there is no refresh filter function. The good news is that @Shane D. says in this thread that the issue is being looked at: The other thing for us tag users to look forward to in 10.5 is that clicking a tag in the sidebar filters by just that tag rather than trying to find (non-existent) notes containing the parent tag AND child1 AND child2 AND grandchild1 etc

  31. I am also facing the same issue. I'm using Evernote for exam preparation in which 'word limit' matters. I will like to request Evernote to kindly resolve this issue and bring that feature back (view menu -> status bar containing word limit information). That was a really handy feature for those who used it.

  32. I have been a Premium Evernote user for years since I migrated from OneNote. When I first upgraded from 6.25.1 to the new v10 update I was excited for the improvements, many of which I had requested myself. But for the few real enhancements that I saw, the cost was a large number of unacceptable and puzzling changes that were major steps backward. On balance, I think the developers destroyed an otherwise solid application. It's so bad that I went back to v6.25.1 and have begun prepping for the possibility that I will need to move back to OneNote - not a pleasant notion. Perhaps worse, I tried to comment on some of these issues over a week ago, and apparently the moderators did not like my criticism. This does not bode well for Evernote. My observations of v10: Web clipping is now broken. Previous versions preserved formatted HTML well during clipping. This is important for content like legal statutes which rely heavily on indented formatting. V10 is useless in this area: "Article" retains formatting but clips into an HTML container which cannot be edited or highlighted whereas "Simplified Article" is editable but strips out all formatting. Unacceptable, since previous versions did not have this problem. Manually cleaning up missing formatting is an absolute No-Go. Search feature is now functionally useless. Previous versions allowed targeting searches to notebooks, folders and individual notes. V10 provides NO search controls. I have some 6,000 notes in my database, so this change renders the search utility absurdly worthless and entirely inexplicable. Who would design a database with only global search options? Sloooowwwww. As others have mentioned, the new version now moves at a glacial creep. Hard to understand why this is so. No manual Sync feature. This is a bigger deal than some may think. I do a lot of web-based research and use the web clip utility a lot. Previously, I could manually sync right after clipping an article to begin markup immediately. Now one has to sit and wait for the content to be available, which can take several minutes. Multiply that wasted time over several hundred articles and we are talking about significant amounts of time. Can no longer choose app to edit PDF's as in previous versions. 6.25.1 menu provides "Open" or "Open with" to allow user to decide which software to edit PDF's with. I run both Adobe Pro and Reader DC, depending on what I need to do. I can't understand the elimination of that flexibility. Others have noted many other areas which have seen a step backward, but I was so disappointed with v10 that I ditched it and went back to 6.25.1 a day later. The broken web clipping and broken search feature were plenty frustrating to convince me. Please, Evernote developers. Listen to your users. Implement the enhancements without breaking the core functionality which was excellent prior to the "upgrade." I hope you folks can fix these problems before you create a mass exodus from your software. Todd

  34. UPDATE: we've released a patch (v10.4.4) to address a few concerning bugs in 10.4.3. Hello! Today we are releasing Evernote for Mac 10.4 (v 10.4.3 build 2071). This release includes a top requested feature: top list view. Please find it in your view options menu. Additionally the view options menu has been added to search results to make switching there easier and a new column (URL) has been added for viewing note URL data via top and side list view. We're aware that most of the list columns are not sortable and are working on addressing that limitation. It is available now via the Mac App Store and as a direct download version from our website. If you are already running the direct download version, you will see an automatic update sometime soon as we progressively roll out the update and do not need to take any action. New to Mac 10.4 - Top list view - switch to a view that shows a list of notes on top of the note editor View options are now available from search results Add URL column to side-list view or top-list view Additional options added to Activity Logs - mostly helpful for when you are contacting our support team Fixed highlights: Keyboard shortcuts issue blocking shortcuts in editor. Shortcuts that worked in the note list but not in editor (edit tags, for example) now work when in the note itself Merging notes in shared notes would sometimes not be possible with full edit permission Notes with sketches were unable to be exported when offline Sorting by title was not defaulting to A-Z initially Copying and pasting images from other websites would not always paste the file into Evernote (previously, it would paste a link to the file's resource) Copying/pasting from the file system now pastes directly into Evernote Scansnap scans sometimes created a new notebook Coming soon: Quickly search and move to different note using a keyboard shortcut (Mac - CMD+J, Windows - Ctrl+Q) Create new audio recordings and playback audio file Dragging and dropping note links and tags directly into notes Global keyboard shortcuts Additional export options Import folder Let us know what you think and we appreciate the continued feedback. We will keep hard at work! Thank you!

  37. Not only is it two clicks, you have to click your link, then mouse over to the new link that appears, and then click that again. It's really unwieldy. Can there at least be an option on how to handle links? I have lists of links that I need to click on each day for separate classes and this really slows down my workflow.

  38. ‼️‼️ You can REVERT to the legacy version here: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360052560314-Install-an-older-version-of-Evernote +1 for tabs. This is a critical feature for me. PLEASE BRING TABS back!! I love evernote, but not tabs is a serious drawback. In reply to Evernote's CEO "we are not implementing tabs at this point... it was not a heavily utilized feature." That's because most people don't know how to use Evernote to the MAX. If they did, they would NEVER leave Evernote. It would help to add tutorial videos for this and explain WHY these features are important and how they could be used. As a Peak Performance Coach, helping people minimize COGNITIVE LOAD is key. Easy flow and movement around Evernote is KEY if we are to use it as a second brain.

  39. A lot of discussion here about the differences between Checkboxes and Checklists. Helpful distinction but I think there's a bug here that is creating problems. I have had a Checkbox shopping list for a long time. Everything seems to work on my PC Desktop version but my iPhone is where I see the bug. Using my existing shopping list when I start at the end of an existing Checkbox item and hit Enter I not only get a Checklist bullet (creates a strikethrough) but it changes the whole section to a Checklist. This is not what happens on the Desktop app. When I look at the Desktop app after I have performed the action described above on my iPhone, I see Bullets in front of all the Checkboxes that got converted to Checklist. When I use the Desktop app to select all of the lines and undo the Bullets and sync my iPhone it will display my original Checkboxes again. Last week I noticed that something was wrong but it was different then. The behavior described above was noticed just yesterday. Last week I would hit Enter at the end of my shopping list and I would get NO checkboxes at all on the next line - completely different behavior. I suspect they are trying to fix the bug but created a different bug. Also, I HATE that they have removed the down arrow icon to get rid of the keyboard. Now you have to swipe the whole screen down and then back up again to return to your place in the list. Like the arrow icon was SO in the way! Arghh! Does Evernote monitor this forum?

  40. I think they just don't want to admit that they totally botched their platform update, and fundamentally don't understand Evernote's value proposition. Think about it: 1. Evernote increased their pricing to exclude casual users. Their entire userbase consists of people who are damn serious about note taking and clipping. 2. They then release a major update across all platforms that removes all advanced features. Just try and wrap your head around how clueless the CEO must be for that sequence of events to happen.

  44. I for one find it useful to get others perspectives, and benefit from their experience. I'm in the same boat - I think v10 is fundamentally broken and I've reverted back to Legacy while I look at alternatives. I've been a rusted on (10 year) subscriber, but I've lost all confidence in the product with v10.

  45. I think it would be simpler to use a script program like autohotkey or similar, but if you must use ENScript, just copy the following 4 files from the legacy version: encrashrep.dll ENFatInk.dll libsqlite.dll libpcre.dll ENScript.exe I found it will run, but no guarantees, etc.

  46. Thanks for nothing. In one swoop you have completely destroyed my workflow and 7 years worth of an information database. Many moons ago with the idiotic limitation of 250 notebooks I was forced to go the tagging route. That took a whole weekend to re-organise 3000+ notes. BUT once set up it did work well and no longer a limit on a high level entity. Today that's all gone - colour coded tag tiles gone. AND when you go to a tag area and create a new note you are bounced to ALL notes - the new note is not kept with the tag set. OK so I thought I'd look at Notebooks again and moving notes within tag to a Notebook - oh no the data is lost - brilliant how can that possibly happen! This is a complete waste of space - and I am now looking at moving out of Evernote to something else - I just hope that the receiving software can read in Evernote data.

  47. Oh my god, I wish I hadn't 'upgraded' to 10.1.7 this morning. It's a really dumbed down version from what I had before. So many issues. Like, where is the Sync button? Why can't I have my note list at the top of the screen any more (crucial if you want to see more than a few columns in the list). Where are user preferences. This sucks BIG TIME. Evernote, you are alienating core (paying) users with this *****. And it's so SLOW! Aaargh, I hate this.

  48. Yes I'm having all sorts of problems getting anything out of EN. You can't copy and paste files or images and you can't drag and drop as you say. My best workaround is to drag and drop to the desktop and then drag and drop from the desktop into the other application. Consistent with the EN design philosophy of "why do it in one click when you can do it in three".
    1 point
  49. No, I’m not thinking about switching currently. Evernote’s custom templates, note merge, multi platform access and tags system are exceptional and there is no near level equivalent. I tried notion but it is so complex and tags appear to be specific to an area and not universal, even if there is a way to do that - a slight example of the complexity of basic tasks there. My Evernote subscription runs for 7 more months, I’ll see where things are at nearer that point. The launch of the new apps sure hasn’t been smooth and the silence of Ian and the team is a concern, I do hope they can turn this around though as it is a generally excellent product.

  50. Yes - please, add sub-folders / categories / etc. I am getting the feeling from reading these threads that the EN people are 'refusing' to add this? Is that really true? Why would a company alienate it's user base by refusing to add a feature that so many have requested? Well, my position is simple, if I find the program a burden to use, and I will if I cannot find a way to organize things the way I am USED to organizing them, then I will simply stop using it - it wont happen right away, however small frustrations will build up over time, and inertia will take its toll. Probably will happen in about - 2 or 3 weeks I imagine. Meanwhile I am looking for a different service - or unless I can get a different feeling from the EN development team. Also - I can add this feature if they dont want to - just give me teh codez.
