hi it would be quite nice to support right to left writing direction for languages such as Hebrew, Arabic and Persian. it is really hard to write and read when writing in left to right in those languages. thanks.

My reliance on Evernote has obviously blunted (or should that be diluted) my wetware memory. Sorry both. I might have been channeling my STP (Sir Terry Pratchett) addiction too - "The significant owl hoots in the night." He doesn't mention anything about Ravens (?) though a lot of other people do... Anyhoo.

Sorry, @Nick L., I don't get why you would bother with even a Beta release that doesn't do much, and no details of the changes are provided. How can anyone test without knowing the changes??? And why would they bother, given all the issues that remain? Surely it cost time and effort to put out every release. Is this really a good use of Evernote resources?

I think @DTLow posted a link to another tagging item - https://zapier.com/blog/how-to-use-tags-and-labels/#pc (I Evernoted the link but not the thread!) As I said above, I'm not a natural fan of tags - my note titles include dates, names, keywords... all of which are effectively tags. It allows me to concentrate on getting the note classified by date / document / content / and extra keywords. I search on intitle:<keyword> to start most searches, then winnow through the list with more detailed content searches. I'm now using Filterize which can update Table of Content dashboards from the tags on notes so I'm revising my own system. I'll keep the titles going, but I now have a series of tags for Now / Soon etc for to-do's, which automatically populate the lists on separate notes. I can keep some more specialized lists going too - 'to be read' and 'locations' (places for photography or chilling out); a 'wish list' for the stuff I want to buy, local places ro eat... - and so on. The thing about a classification scheme is that it depends totally on your own preferences, the information you're handling, and the use to which it will be put. So I don't believe we can suggest anything that will satisfy you off the bat, but maybe you can string together something from the ideas in this thread.

It's already a 2nd major issue I'm getting with Evernote within last month. So, for some reason, the note I've been working on duplicated >20 times, and basically contains the history of the changes I've made to it. Some other notes, have the same issue as well. I don't remember doing anything differently this time. Did anyone had such behavious, and how can it be fixed?

Hi Folks, Evernote for Mac 7.9 Beta 1 is now available for download. You can get it here. Fixes and Improvement: Small improvements to the client. Known issues: Empty lines are eliminated when copying and pasting. Spotlight search in macOS Mojave doesn't work. Text appears fuzzy on non retina displays. Please continue sending us your feedback. Enjoy!

Help!!! For months I have been able to say "Ok Google note to self xxx" and Android would save a new note in evernote with xxx in the body. I love this feature. I bet I use it 5 or 6 times a day. But today, out of the blue, it stopped working. Now when I say that, Google Assistant saves it somewhere else. Where? I am not sure. I think it is saving the notes in google assistant itself. I can say "OK Google show me my notes" and it will list the notes and I can tap them and see them and edit them even, but they are not in evernote. The are in something else. Sorry to be so vague on that point, but I can't tell. All I know is that it seems to be entirely within Google Assistant and it's definitely not Evernote. Argh. Very frustrating. I spent an hour on a chat today with Google One support and they eitehr couldn't or wouldn't help me. Any one know how I can fix this so that I can save notes to evernote again? I don't care if I have to say something slightly different to trigger it. But I've tried a bunch of different variations of the phrase and tired adding "with evernote" etc and so far have not been able to get it working again.

In many discussions notebooks and tags are viewed as contradicting concepts. I want to share a view where within a workflow they are fluent, notes moving from a tag to a notebook back to a tagging-dominated perspective. My wife and I love to travel on our own. This means collecting many ideas about where to go, what to do, where to stay, what to eat etc. We have started to collect these snippets in a EN notebook “Travel ideas”, with some very basic tags. These are not related to the content, but only to find these nuggets in the database. All in one notebook, access through tags. When a travel plan gets more solid, I create a new notebook labeled with the destination and the year. There we collect everything related to this project. Here the notebook is the main criteria for holding things together. Tags move with the notes from “ideas” but are secondary, more notes join them (Tickets, Documents, Bookings and the like). Why a notebook ? Because it is easy to define a notebook with all its content as “offline”. When traveling it is always a good idea to carry everything along on the mobile devices. So we share this Notebook, and have things available wherever we are, no matter WiFi and roaming. While on the trip, more goes into the notebook, often scanned on the fly. Wherever there is a internet connection, it syncs to “home” and between the offline copies. Now we are back. Delete everything ? No, because it is there, contains memories, helps in sorting through the picture roll etc. But I do not want to have it hanging around as yet another notebook any more. Solution: I create a Tag named ZZZ_Destination_Year. ZZZ to move it to the end of the list (=tag archive), the rest is the selection criteria. Then I select all notes in the travel project notebook and assign them the new tag. This done, I move them all to a notebook “Travel Archive”, and delete the now obsolete project notebook. For us it works and took a lot of stress out of travel preparation and execution - because every information is always going to one place, nearly always available. Even when we are happy as it is, we are open to ideas to improve this further. The concept can of course be transferred to all processes that run through a planning-execution-followup-archive-cycle.

In general, I agree with you. I don't see the Windows application to be 'tired' at all, and it fits like an old favorite pair of jeans, maybe a little frayed in spots, but comfortable and functional. I've never used the Mac, so I can't compare between the two desktop versions, but AppleScript sounds pretty cool, and I would like a better scripting solution than ENScript, which *is* a little old in the tooth. I've used it for scripting automated backups, where it works fine (though a bit clumsily), but not much more. Maybe Evernote should open source it. *sound of two hands rubbing in glee*

Which platform/device? I script this export using Applescript on my Mac. A comment on the note links. I use the classic/in-app url, embedded in the note title. >>So right now if I copy links from seven selected notes and paste into excel I get this. I use the Copy Note Links funtion. I have to paste into a note first, then copy/paste into a spreadsheet.

I second this. As a long time windows user I had seen comments about how great the Mac interface was. About a year ago I moved over to the Mac for home use expecting to be wowed and instead was underwhelmed. In addition to selecting merge order I like the ability to remove the fat header and instead have a horizontal line. I miss not having the color options in the left hand pane and lack of customizable toolbar. You have to go menu digging to get to some pretty common editing tasks. The Mac app should not be the gold standard and let's universally get rid of the green share button.

While I agree that Evernote on Windows could use some work, especially on the database format that simply is not up to the task, as both a Mac and Windows user, I much prefer the Windows version due to missing features on the Mac. Just some examples (no one respond with "well, I can do this with AppleScript! - 1) that isn't helpful for those that don't want to use a programing language to use their app and 2) windows doesn't have that so it is irrelevant): Notes created via the Table of Contents feature are populated with a "file://Table of Contents" string in the URL, making searching for TOC notes possible. Notes can be merged in the order selected. You you cannot do this on the Mac. You have to edit them in a specific order to trick the sytem in to modifying the updated date, and then merge, and then hope you didn't get the logic backwards. You cannot set up Import folders on the Mac where you can just drop a bunch of files info a folder and Evernote will create notes for all of them and optionally remove the files. This is awesome for personal and work workflows. You cannot set the Mac client to sync on demand, meaning I don't have to have my 8-9GB database of notes on my Windows PC, but do on my Mac. Here the Windows PC allows you to work like mobile devices. You can download what you want, and search all of it, but only download bodies as necessary. Windows lets you put the shortcut menu across the top as a separate toolbar. Makes it easy to select without having massive amounts of up/down scrolling on the left pane. Windows has an honest-to-goodness set of toolbar buttons to indent/outdent. On the Mac you have to hit Option-< or Option >, or option-shift-[, or ctrl-option-left-shift-key-{ or some such nonsense. Keyboard shortcuts are fine, but shouldn't be the only way to do something. Windows has a real toolbar for notes, not a mile wide swath of white space with a big green SHARE button. There are others, but those are the quick ones off the top of my head. Implementing the Mac model in any of these areas is a step forward only for someone in design that clearly isn't using the product to its fullest, or simply doesn't care what the user wants. On the other hand, I cannot think of a single feature on the Mac platform I wish Windows had. I am sure there are some, but I am not one of the ones to use them. We shouldn't move to one or the other model. We should get the best of both in a client sync'd up in the best features and designed with usability in mind, not prettiness awards that reward minimalism vs productivity.

A bit late to the party. I tag everything. My tags tend to be broad not specific in meaning. 400 tags across 41k notes, don't add many tags any more. Use the tag tree structure to organize tags, eg, Accounts is a parent tag for the tags representing companies with which I do business. Purpose of tags for me is to end up with a brief list of notes in a multi tag search. Occasionally have to add text to the search to refine. Use case is predominantly paperless, history, and my own version of GTD/TSW.

Because I was having unexpected search results in Evernote, I started to read https://dev.evernote.com/doc/articles/search_grammar.php I was especially interested in the section "Matching Literal Terms". The examples suggest that Evernote does whole word search (if no wildcards are used). This is not correct. Maybe it has changed over time? 'potato' (without quotes) matches "Sweet Potato Pie" AND "Mash four potatoes together" and "lotofpotatoes" See my annotated screenshots attached. Please correct the erroneous (therefor confusing) examples in Evernote's documentation on Search Grammer

Yeah, I get all that, EN plumbing, uniformity and reliability are job 1's. If that takes all of 2019, well that's another blog post. Though I do suppose if that stuff got fixed and all else stayed the same I would be just as happy without the shiny objects.

Please increase tags functionality for iOS devices: 1) We need *simple* multi-tag search. 2) We need auto-populate of tag names. 3) We need the tag library to reflect our desktop organization (e.g. order, nesting, etc), just as with Notebooks. The iOS apps are horridly crippled without these functions in place. Without them, you have only a few options: 1) Do without multi-tag filtering... Do you have something tagged for a person AND as an agenda item (something to talk about next time you see that person)? Too bad, you can only pull up EVERYTHING for that person, which may include years of emails, mtg notes, etc. OR you can pull up EVERYTHING tagged as "agenda", thus including large numbers of items irrelevant to who you are actually standing with. Insert your own example of useful multi-characteristic filtering, then accept that you can't accomplish them. 2) Utilize saved searches... This works perfectly, but causes, as it has caused with my Evernote, your Shortcut list to become monstrously long defeating to some degree the idea of a "shortcut list". In the end, you choose a few definitely needed multi-tag searches and resign yourself to option #1 above for most things. 3) Attempt to use complicated boolean search strings... This works in a highly non-intuitive way AND requires you to remember the exact wording of your desired tags, often difficult in situations where you are looking for a person for instance and don't remember if you listed them as Dan or Daniel. If you utilize an extensive tag list (a strength of the desktop Evernote applications) this works almost never, thus you resort to a few items under option #2, and mostly surrender to option #1. It seems quite strange that this is an unavailable functionality, especially because of how many people tell me it WAS available prior to 2011/2012. It's a very frustrating situation which is crippling the usability of the iOS apps for easy daily use. Please fix, or at least give us some idea of why this oft asked for functionality is still unavailable. Thank you!

I want to thank everyone who concentrated on this issue (including up-voting the top post) and Evernote for fixing 2 of the 3 problems originally identified (we still don't have the same desktop organization in iOS but that was the least important of the requests). Great evidence that Evernote is watching and responding where they can to user feedback! 👍👍

I was guessing that you might be channeling a bit of single malt, myself... Um, this is wildly off-topic. In re tags: I am a casual but persistent tagger, by which I mean that I tag early & often, but I don't have a rigorous tagging discipline in place, and don't use hierarchical tags; my tag tree is roughly organized but since I overload tag names with different meaning depending on context, there's no sense in making a rigorously structured tree. Just doesn't seem necessary to me. Tags are just a little descriptive language that I use. I don't take a lot of time organizing them, and don't make much effort to prune unused or rarely used tags, much as I don't black out word in my dictionary that I don't use. But I do tag, yes indeed. And if tagging / tag search in the file system were as simple as it is in Evernote, I'd use that there, too.

OK, I've been able to confirm that when running Sticky Password in the background, EN freezes from time to time - even in my Test account in Windows. This is significant because until trying this, nothing would make EN freeze in the Test account. I'm therefore reasonably certain that this is the cause, at least in my case. The first I noticed EN freezing was around 30/31 December, which was at least 10 days after the Sticky Password update to Build - quite a long time not to have noticed any freeze, but then again I'm only a light EN user so I simply may not have encountered one. I've opened a support ticket with Sticky Password to as if they know about any issue, and asking how to downgrade to an earlier version. @gazumped I don't suppose you use Sticky Password? Or have a Realtek sound card?

I found it helps to have a strong naming standard in place so the filter triggers when selecting tags I prefix my tagnames so the hierarcy is reflected in the shortlist presented when typing a tagname. For example colour tags are Colour-Red, Colour-Blue, Colour-White...; my types are Type-Receipt, Type-Project, Type-Actionable, ...

@mgpmul: Unfortunately, our dev.evernote.com website is woefully out-of-date. As was noted above, search functionality in particular has kind of fragmented with each client having slightly different behavior. Updating the dev website, our developer APIs, and having a more seamless UI/experience across all our apps is definitely part of what we're focusing on this year, as was laid out by the new CEO. I know this probably doesn't help with your current issues, but I at least wanted to let you know it is on our radar. We've got a LOT to fix to give our users a better experience.

Using the previous web app, when I clicked on a sharing link in an email, the browser would be activated and I would get a prompt whether I wanted to open the note in the desktop app. With the current web app, the note just opens in the web app. Is there a way to open the link in the desktop app from the web app, or do I just have to switch to the desktop app and hunt it down there?

It's 2019 and from my searches it appears this feature has been requested since 2014😥 Still can't add or modify a hyperlink in the android app. How hard is this? It should be a simple feature in any electronic tool. I like to have notes reference each other and am doing more and more things on portable tools like phones and tablets. Please add this feature. Without features like this Evernote is falling further and further behind giving more motivation to look at other tools.

I noticed a few days ago that when I use the Chrome clipper to Open in Evernote it is using an HTML link and opening the web client. Previously it would briefly open a web tab then the desktop client would launch. Anyone know if this is a by design change? It's a really annoying break in my workflow - about 20% of my clips I either want to further annotate or link to them from another note, immediately after clipping. The preference in Evernote Mac Desktop for Clipper is set to After clipping: Bring the clip to the front. Well it seems Evernote is not a serious product. I have been using the good Quickmemo app in my LG, but it's not compatible with other Androids. Thought Evernote would be the solution for writing notes, including pictures, sketching, etc., and started using it. However, the app is USELESS without RTL support. You just cannot work with it. Whenever you try to add words to a written text it puts them in the opposite side. It's a shame that an app like this does not support Hebrew, Arabic & Persian, even though the request was sent 6 years ago! You lose me as a user. I will look for a better app.

Hi, Please add back the native Evernote function, to scan directly to PDF docs. Why was this removed at all?
  41. 1 point
Hi All, You may have noticed that all threads requesting RTL (right-to-left) support have been merged into this thread, regardless of platform specificity. This was done in order to better enable us to quantify and qualify user requests, and amplify their voice. While this does not mean this is a feature that will be coming, we certainly want to relay user feedback/sentiment to our various teams. Moving forward, please put all commentary and votes for RTL (right-to-left) support here!

I also had this problem but have fixed it (at least for now) by creating a new shortcut to the program file (in program files (x86) folder) on the desktop. Then I deleted the prexisiting shortcuts to EN there. From the destop you can apply it to the taskbar and/or the start menu.

Yes. Select the note in Evernote you want to put a shortcut to. Hold down the CTRL key. this is important. In the note, select the Note menu, then Copy Note Link. On the desktop, Right-click and select New Shortcut. CTRL-V the note link. THat's it. If you don't do #2 above, you'll get a URL and the shortcut will open in your browser and not in your Evernote window. CTRL modifies the note link to an internal Evernote note link on your PC, even if you are not online.
  47. 1 point
Nice work everyone - many thanks. Has anyone figured how to include embedded images from your notes in Notes.app to the new Evernote note?
  48. 1 point
From your second link: I challenge that this behavior is "usually what a user wants." With over 20 million users, I just don't know how Evernote could know this. In any case, it is certainly NOT what I want. We have the wildcard that can be used if in fact that is what we want. So, if I want an exact search, I have to put the term in quotes? Much harder to do and harder to remember. So, if I have multiple terms, do I put each in quotes? Where is this formally documented? Of course, nowhere. This raises another issue: The terrible, out of date, erroneous documentation that Evernote offers. IMO and in my experience, the Evernote documentation is the worst of any software I have ever used. And although there is a lot if information in these forums, it has hard to find. I have been extremely frustrated with the forum search and with the EN KB search. A Google search with "evernote" and a few terms does a better job than either. Evernote has had a lot of funding for a couple of years now. Surely they could have afforded to put at least one competent technical writer on the job full time until the docs are up to date.
