    I feel on the biggest missing features is native support for Markdown. Please add native Markdown to Evernote.

    Feature Request: Add Outlining Capabilities to Evernote Evernote is great, but it's dying for the ability to create Notes that contain Outlines which are easily collapsed and expanded during creation and in use. One way to implement it would be a switchable editing mode, between standard formatting or outline mode. In outline mode, pressing the Enter key creates a new outline item, and pressing the Tab key changes the current item into a sub-item. Clicking on an item's action icon causes its sub-items to collapse out of, or expand into view. That's the way the Ecco Pro PIM did it, and something simple like that would be a good start for Evernote. The name Evernote implies a product that takes notes -and collapsible/expandable outlines are a huge part of note taking.

    I love Evernote, but it's preventing me from putting in sensitive content. For example, I can't keep a personal journal notebook, because other people (i.e. girlfriend, family members, etc.) could one day be looking at those notes, especially since they know that I use Evernote often for many purposes. Evernote already has the ability to encrypt single notes. This is useful for things like storing passwords or other temporary sensitive content. But it's not practical to encrypt many notes one by one. I wish I could password-protect a whole notebook. This way, I can do a lot more with Evernote. If I can encrypt single notes, then why can't Evernote just allow me to encrypt entire notebooks? If reason behind this is because Evernote thinks one could lose a lot of data if a notebook password is forgotten, then perhaps Evernote can help recover the passwords through email. In the meantime, I'm stuck with using other apps (i.e. Pages, Day One, etc) to password-protect my content. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    REQUEST – It would be amazing to have a feature where an image can be selected, and when you right-click (ie, the same way you rotate it, etc.) there could also be an option to override the "largest smallest-dimension" algorithm and set that image as the note's thumbnail. A little background –– One thing I use EN for very heavily is as an artist database for my job. I really like having both a photo of the artist and an example of their artwork at the top of their card. However, when I'm scrolling through snippet or card view, it would be really helpful to have the image of their artwork always be the one to show up. This usually happens but there are a few times where the photo of the artist is used instead. I've read up on the algorithm that chooses the image with the "largest smallest-dimension" (PS, see what I did there with the hyphen? Way clearer that way.) and I am actually OCD enough to try to amend the file sizes to have the algorithm pick the right one. However, even this doesn't seem to work – it's probably me because I guess an algorithm can't lie, but even when I resize the images, it's still not choosing the right one. So my question is – why would that be happening? Could it be that once EN's algorithm chooses an image, it always chooses that filename even when the size changes? But what would be SO MUCH EASIER is my *request* – could there be an override option to the largest smallest-dimension algorithm (which I agree does work at least half of the time for me) to choose a thumbnail? I'm not talking some fancy thing in the settings where you tell EN how to pick your thumbnails – that sounds like way more work than it's worth. I just imagine, like I've said above, having the image you want to be the thumbnail highlighted/selected, then right click (in the same way that you can rotate an image, etc.) and have something like "set as note thumbnail." Please?? Thank you!

    I think it's obvious, at this point, that Evernote users want the ability to select the default thumbnail for notes. I agree that it seems ridiculous that this conversation started in 2013 and 4 years later this hasn't been added to the application. As a visual person, the thumbnail helps me quickly find what I'm looking for. For example, when I'm looking for a recipe for pancakes, an image of the video (pertaining to the recipe) of two cooks doesn't help me find what I'm looking for. I need to be able to select the pic of the stack of pancakes. The whole purpose for using Evernote is to be able to organize things so that they are easily found/accessed. I'm confused why this isn't already an option. This seems so simple to implement. Can we get some love on this issue?!

    I think Evernote is a fantastic product, especially with the iPhone integration. I currently use a program called UltraRecall because of it's heavy use of subfolders. This makes organizing my data very logical. I was wondering if Evernotes has a way to create subnotebooks under existing notebooks to help group numerious notebooks together? Example Notebooks: Work Clients Customer1 Customer2 Customer3 Customer4 Personal Electronics Web Clips

    Hi all, Evernote is brilliant - could not navigate life without it!! A feature that I feel is dearly needed and would be tremendous to have is the ability to create an anchor point in notes. eg if I am working on a lengthy note and constantly referring to other notes at the same time I want the ability to specify a point where I am working in that note so I can go straight back to it. Also, when you open a note it goes straight to the start of the note. You always have to scroll down to the bottom of the note to add to it. Many thanks for any comments.

    .. here are my thoughts/experiences. My first note was made 10 years ago June 2009. I've used it entirely for all my personal stuff - travel, finances, kids report cards, music, web clips and on and off I've used it for work stuff - reference materials, meeting notes and even GTD. However, with all the talk and rumors about EN sustainability, I decided to try out alternatives. Here's what I found. 1. Bear. I am an amateur musician (not a very good one). In music a common notation for a sharp is a #. Bear treats this as a tag. So storing your music in bear is a non-starter. You could use other symbols, but why? Also Bear is another company, with a subscription plan that's just younger than EN. Why should Bear last any more than EN? 2. Apple Notes. Pretty good and free. But web clipping is non existent. Scanning is hard. Sync can be slow over icloud. You can't tag easily. Search is limited. 3. Notebooks.app. I really thought this one might be good. Idea is you store your notes in dropbox and then Notebooks creates a little file with meta data (tag, due date etc) for the note. Your notes are in a native format - rtf , pdf, html etc so no proprietary system. People seem to rave about it and it has nice IOS apps. But - no web clipper. There's a script you can use, but it's not great. And the big issue - I imported 1000 notes from EN and while it worked OK ish on the mac, my ipad froze. Suggestion from the developer was - don't put all your notes in one folder. Not helpful. Oh and sync is very very slow because you're layering the app's work on top of dropbox's sync. 4. Devonthink. DT is great if you are writing your manifesto/dissertation/research project and you've got 100s of reference docs (pdfs, clips, notes). DT has OCR and advanced AI to search and find links in all these files. But if you just want to organize some travel details, it is complete overkill. Plus, it's clunky and the learning curve is awful. It's expensive, but there are no ongoing fees. DT is a research grade program. 5. Google Keep. Is a bit of a joke really. 6. Notion. If you like spending a lot of time arranging things on a desktop then it's great. But it's still a proprietary system (unlike notebooks and devonthink where your content is stored in open files). And again - how do you know Notion will be around tomorrow. 7. OneNote. On the Mac it is pretty bad. They finally added search for to-dos, but you can't really create tags. On windows it's pretty good. Exporting from Onenote is not good. For example pdfs get exported as multi page image files. So I am 100% back to evernote. It has issues, sure, it's not perfect, but it's a lot better (at least for me) than the alternatives. Here are a few of my most fave things about Evernote. 1. Drag a note onto another note to create an instant link in that note. This is so awesome - I create master reference notes super easily. 2. You can search for unchecked to-dos. 3. You can save searches. 4. It is fast. 5. Even though your data is in evernote format, my experience has been that if you want to extract it to other programs, you always can. You have an exit strategy. Sure it costs. But I pay for Dropbox, I pay for Lightroom, I don't mind paying for Evernote. If you think you can get a good robust app for no-money then you are kidding yourself. Anyhow, just my 2 cents.

    Dear All, I really would love to see a solution for archiving notes. I've been using for 4 years and now I have some notes that I want to keep in the system, but want to remove from my search. As time goes, my search are getting more difficult to separate valid information and archived information. Like we have Notes, Notebook, Tags, Atlas, Market and Premium button on the Mac version, I dream with an Archive button. Every note I move to this icon will make it not searchable, unless I'm searching inside the Archive View. You could even move a completely Notebook. I have many scenarios where this is valid, some of them here: You finished a graduation course full of notes and you want these notes in a place that you may need but normally it will not be part of your search or have a distract visual in All Notes ViewYou closed a company and want all the notes in a special placeYou may not want to have this Archive notes in your local hard disk, unless you click "Download"You prepare for a vacation and suddenly canceled. You want to have this hide in some place but not displaying all the time. I think it would be a great feature. Thank you, Patrick Santana

    Hey gang - There is some useful feedback in this thread which I have read with interest. Thank you! There are also a lot of concerns raised, whether it be feedback to the specific content we showed, or all sorts of interpolations and extrapolations built off what we showed (and in some cases, what we didn't). I don't have time to respond to every possible angle raised in this thread, but here are a few quick responses: 1. Roughly 12% of Evernote usage is on web sessions. 2. No one ever said anything about making Evernote a web-only experience. Just because we demo a set of improvements to search on web (which is the least adequate search experience, btw) doesn't mean this is the only thing we are working on. In a series of videos that may well have a lot of episodes by the time we're done (depending on the response we get, I guess), we judged it to be a reasonably approachable initial subject for a first video. Why? It's relatively easy to understand. It's visual. 3. Following up on #2 above, we are NOT planning on eliminating Windows and Mac versions of Evernote with local stores, nor Android and iOS versions with local stores, etc. Being able to use Evernote whether online or offline is a major feature/benefit and in a million years that's not going away. Of course, having a local store would be even better if sync was fully robust. Working on that. 4. Having the kind of interactive search capability we outline here doesn't mean we're taking away your power search capabilities. It means we're trying to find ways to (a) more quickly get to the content you're looking for *without* needing to know quite as much of the search instruction arcana (b) give more people more powerful search tools (c) get there in fewer keystrokes. I'm sure we'll get some things wrong along the way, but we're trying to have our cake (improved UX, improved relevancy, more interactive search tools) and eat it too (powerful command line syntax) on this front. 5. As I said in the first video in this series, some of what we choose to show in this series won't relate to a problem you in particular are facing. Hopefully some of it will. I recognize it's frustrating if the first video we drop doesn't relate to your top pain point, but you can rest assured that there are others amongst our millions of users who do. Otherwise we wouldn't be working on it. We can only do one topic at a time. 6. One of the reasons we prototype a lot of new stuff on the web first is because it's absolutely the fastest way for us to design/test/validate/deploy something new to a limited set of customers in order to get a feedback loop going about a particular design direction. As I said in the very first video, we are trying to test - with users, live in the wild - as much of what we are working on as we can prior to release. If seeing what we're working on in a web setting disturbs you simply because we are showing a concept in a web build, I'm guessing that for your own peace of mind, you should probably stop watching much of the Behind the Scenes series of videos. 7. If you *do* get invited to participate in a Preview release of some kind, as part of that we will point out to you that Preview is definitionally pre-Alpha. Which means more than "it's buggy". It means it's not even close to feature complete. It's not performant. It's so early there isn't a proper name for it. But if there's enough in there for us to get directional feedback early in the process, we will do our best to put it in front of some users, live and in the wild. Because the earlier we get feedback, the better chance we have of being ultimately on target. All we will ask of you is not to pre-judge the eventual release of something by its Preview release, a release that may come months before we lock down direction, functionality or performance. Previews usually come along with non-disclosure requests, too, because they're so early. Which is one reason you (appropriately) don't hear a lot about them. I'll return to lurking now (and get back to my day job, which ultimately is where I have the best chance of generating value for you all). Thanks for watching, and for caring.     Two features to greatly improve the note writing and organization experience: Header Styles – Standard header styles, such as Title, Sub-title, Header 1, etc. Medium, Google Docs, and Slack Posts all are great examples of this. You should be able to select these header styles using a click of a button. The current workaround is painful: change font size for the header line, then change font size again to start writing in the smaller font. Note Outline – Once you create headers, these headers can then become a note outline that can easily be navigated. Look to Google Docs for a great example of this. This would greatly help my ability to navigate my more lengthy notes. Please see screenshots below. Hope you consider this! It would be awesome!

    I read Ian's introductory blog this morning. He said he wanted to hear from customers. I couldn't find an easy way to pass along my feedback. Ian, I hope you'll read this. I think I'm one of your earliest users. My first note is dated 1/3/09. I was using a Mac at that time but switched to Windows, back to Mac, and back to Windows. For a while I used a Windows touchscreen laptop. I have Evernote installed on my iPhone and iPad. I've tried OneNote. Bleh... As I think about the apps that make the use of a computer worthwhile, there are just a few: a web browser, Microsoft Office, an email client, photo editing software, an autocorrect utility, a screen grab utility – and Evernote. Rumors of Evernote's demise greatly concerned me. I am hooked on using Evernote as sort of a Swiss Army knife to use to write down my thoughts, keep notes on various things, capture snippets of information, etc. I use the Web Clipper all the time. It is very handy to capture a note on one device and look it up on another device. It's been hugely important to be able to load Evernote on a new computer and have almost 10 years of notes, thoughts, and information magically appear on it. But I've had my share of frustrations too. Only recently the dictionary function on Windows seemed to get fixed. Really? The UI is all over the place. Honestly, I never seem to remember how to use the iOS apps, both of which are oddly different. Touch on my Dell laptop didn't work because Evernote stopped supporting touch (maybe you do now; I don't have a touchscreen laptop now). I have lived through the Evernote Moleskine days and all of that distraction. In 10 years I've never really felt like Evernote truly knew what its center of gravity was. I hope that will change. Here are some thoughts... Make Evernote nice to look at and easier to use: It's been a while, but I recall that the Mac UI was really nice. The Windows UI is utilitarian. Hire some designers and UI experts and spruce it up. Create some consistency between the iPhone and iPad apps and allow users like me to easily move between them. But don't dumb Evernote down: If I want a dumb note app, I can use Google Keep. OneNote used to be overly complicated and now they have made it overly dumb. Easy to use should mean easy to use, not dumbed-down to the lowest common denominator. You probably should support Markdown: It's not my cup of tea, but why not offer it to customers who love it? I think there are a lot of folks out there would would prefer to write notes in Markdown. This is my cup of tea: I would like the choice of a more sophisticated editor. I don't want a Word clone, but some more formatting tools would be nice. One thing I would love is the ability to set my own paragraph spacing. I would love to have Styles. A table function that really works would be nice. How about offering three editor UIs: Document creation, standard (i.e., the one that is used today), and Markdown. Leverage your cloud: I've always wondered why Evernote didn't go in the direction of Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive. Evernote was the "100 year company" – I would have trusted my photos (30,000 of them) to Evernote. Now I pay Microsoft. That might be too far from your center of gravity but it makes more sense to me than Moleskines. Fire your brand consultants: Recently I read Chris O'Neill's blog article titled "CEO Notebook: Say Hello to a Refreshed Evernote". It read like a long-form Dilbert comic. "Engage with what matters!" "Extend impact!" "Explore What's Possible!" Evernote is a software product. It does stuff. It will not solve world hunger or achieve peace in the Middle East. For my photo editing I recently switched from Adobe Lightroom to Capture One because its features are better. I use Snagit instead of free screen grab utilities because its features are better. I could go through the list of the software I've selected and I suspect in every case I make a choice because of a combination of features, ease of use, visual attractiveness, and price. Microsoft office is the only thing I use because my company requires it. Stick to making the product better. Fire your brand consultants and hire some UI experts. Software quality has to be rock solid: The dictionary thing really got to me. How could a company in business as long as Evernote have such a flaky dictionary? There are other software issues I've encountered over the years. This is table stakes. In conclusion: Please don't let Evernote die. It is a pioneering product that is still very relevant. It has competitors but I think Evernote is still the best. You need to keep it there. You need to keep a clear eye on what you do well and avoid things that are peripheral. I think Adobe's strategy is a good one to watch. They are creating a cloud-centric model with a solid focus on the workflow of creative people and leveraging the power of tablets. Although I personally prefer a competing product, I think from a strategy point of view they are making some excellent moves. What Microsoft is to office apps, Adobe will be to creative apps. Maybe Evernote won't ever be a Microsoft or Adobe, but I think you should aspire to being identified as the King of the Hill in a core area of application usage. Good luck!

    hi it would be quite nice to support right to left writing direction for languages such as Hebrew, Arabic and Persian. it is really hard to write and read when writing in left to right in those languages. thanks.

    Hi... Tried EN many moons ago, then went with OneNote but EN's cloud and accessible anywhere features are bringing me back...Enough kudos... Is there a way to mark a note as "read-only" so I cannot accidentally erase or modify it? Thanks. Alex

    Hi everyone - Dropping back out of lurking mode to provide some additional insight and to reflect on some of the threads above…. There is lots of valuable feedback in this discussion - thank you! I’m sorry if we have disappointed some of you with a perceived lack of responsiveness in the comment threads on these videos. As you would probably expect, our top priority is listening for input and watching for new insights that emerge from these forums and also from all the other community and social mechanisms through which these videos are distributed. During initial design, we focus on talking to and learning from individual users. When we move into preview releases, we engage one-on-one with tens and hundreds of users. As we ramp tests to thousands, tens of thousands and ultimately into millions of users, we start looking increasingly to quantitative data to inform how successful we are being because the conversation doesn't scale otherwise. That’s just the simple mechanics of how things need to work at the scale of Evernote. Concretely, the new note editor has been out in preview release with select Evernote web users for the last 75 days, ramping from a few hundred users trialing very early builds to now thousands of users kicking the tires in a larger-scale (but still early) beta. In the private discussion attached to that original preview program, the conversation around some of the same topics raised here has been intense, resulting not just in bug fixes but also in changes in design and implementation that we are still continuing to work on as I type this. Understandably, we have focussed our energy on going back and forth with and supporting users who are evaluating this build for us in the wild. (Some of you on this discussion are also involved in the private preview program discussion; thank you for your feedback and contributions there!) This is not to say that we don’t value your responses to these videos. As I said above, we read every one to look for new insights and observations. In general, I think that the early response to the first few Behind the Scenes videos has proven that our decision to start communicating with the community through this video mechanism has been a good one. However, I recognize that as we increase this style of communication out to you, it naturally bumps up your expectation of our ability to be able to engage both interactively and on a lot of fronts at the same time. We’ll do our best to engage as we are able, but our priorities internally are clear: First and foremost, we need to focus on shipping quality software that delivers the more coherent and consistent Evernote experience that I blogged about earlier this year. We are still relatively early in that process; we have a long way to go. When we are able to engage, we try to prioritize interactions that inform us of how to refine the software in flight, or to identify and eliminate bugs. That means we won’t necessarily be able to circle around to catch everyone up across all the different communication channels and all the threads. Apologies. And finally, I want to get us out of the habit of making promises we don’t meet. I am not a fan of making commitments we're not 100% sure we can deliver on. So unfortunately that means most of your questions about additional feature X, anticipated delivery date Y, and what about Z - no matter how reasonable! - are likely going to go unanswered until we can back up an answer with facts, or better yet, software. I truly appreciate your ongoing patience with us while we focus as much energy as we are able to muster on building a better Evernote for you. We are trying to test everything we are doing early and often. And we continue to listen to the feedback from those tests and to evolve in response to that feedback. Finally, for those of you who have stuck with this post this far… we know tags are super important to a significant percentage of our user base. (As an aside, we’re trying to improve support for them on Evernote implementations where tags are currently and inexplicably somewhat second-class citizens.). Tags in the modern Evernote web environment aren’t hidden behind a click. They have always been shown at the bottom of the note editor screen (a particularly observant s2sailor noticed this in the video - full points!), which is different than where they are on the Windows build or on the Mac build. There are advantages to this, and as has been observed in this thread, there are also clearly some disadvantages as well. This continues to be a source of ongoing discussion internally. Going back to lurking now. And probably shooting another video in my copious spare time... ian

To fix this, please install the latest version of Web Clipper today. This update restores Web Clipper to Safari 13, and is also backward-compatible with most previous versions of Safari. The update includes primary features such as saving screenshots, adding bookmarks, and clipping web pages. But in order to get a Safari 13-compatible version of Web Clipper to you as soon as possible, we’ve had to prioritize features, which means a few features aren’t yet ready. Below is a summary of upcoming releases to get you back to a fully-featured version of Web Clipper as soon as possible.     This is a very, very, long-standing HTML feature, and oh so very useful for long notes. Two features I see essential for long (more than one page/screen) notes: Anchors/bookmarks Collapsible sections Both have been available in web pages since the early days of the web (late 1990's). ATTN: Evernote/ @Jackolicious, @SoftwareMarcus, @Justin Street: Come on, this is the very definition of productivity!

    Hmm I counter this problem for a while. It seems to me that I can only change the color of the font rather than the highlight when I call out the "show colors" option under format. Does it mean there is only one color available for highlight at the moment?

    Starting from today, when hovering the mouse pointer to the top or bottom edges of the screen the note's text area automatically scrolls up or down accordingly. How to disable this "feature"? It's quite annoying to get your long note scrolled to the bottom when just want to switch to another window on the taskbar. Haven't found any abilities to disable in the settings.

    I'm ineligible for the contest (non-US Resident), but I'll still share I use my daily journal note as my home dashboard It's rebuilt each morning from a template The template includes info and links for frequently accessed information This includes Evernote notes, files, web sites, ... In addition to the links, I also insert screenshots In the Activities Log, I include checkboxes for daily reminders and copy my events from the calendars The calendar section includes links to the calendars/reminders I reference. I try to make sure my events are included in the first entry, my calendar app The Tasks section displays my task notes exported to a spreadsheet I also include a photo from my location. The mountains in the background are the Olympic Mountains in Washington state across the St >Is any of that information dynamic at all? Or must it be built from scratch, every morning, with a ton of copy/paste actions going on....? The links are static from a template; screenshots are a "ton of copy/paste" actions I include Task/Project lists generated by Applescript

Please try these steps to fix this issue: Select File > Exit to close Evernote Open the task manager to confirm Evernote is not running as a background process (select "Evernote and End task") Open 'regedit' (Windows key + R, then type regedit) Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER folder Expand the "Software" folder Expand the Evernote Folder Click on the second "Evernote folder" so that a list of Values displays on the right Right-Click "EnableHardwareAcceleration" Select "Modify" Set Hexidecimal Value to "0" Select File>Exit to exit the Registry Editor Reopen Evernote Please let me know if the issue continues after completing the steps above.     I don't understand why after almost 10 years this has not been implemented yet. Also, I don't understand why workarounds such as tags are considered a good solution. Is it that complicated to add more hierarchy levels to the structure?

    I use Evernote extensively on my Mac, iPad Pro, and iPhone. We use shared notebooks in my office and I have a ScanSnap Evernote Edition sitting on my desk. (I even have Evernote desk accessories sitting next to the scanner.) I'm pretty well immersed in the world of Evernote. However, I've found myself turning to other tools, most recently OneNote, with greater frequency. The main issue, and it is a big one for me, is the fragmented and inferior support for note taking and PDF editing in Evernote. I use my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil extensively. There are some great Pencil-compatible apps for iOS, including Notability, PDF Expert, and OneNote. Evernote, on the other hand, is stuck with a strange and fragmented approach: PDFs can by opened using the "Annotate" tool in Evernote, which I think is built around the remnants of Skitch. It's fine for adding arrows and icons, but terrible (unusable) for handwritten notes on PDFs. It really can't be used for anything more than simple highlighting -- certainly not detailed annotation or note taking. Drawings and notes can be added to an Evernote Note directly through the handwriting tool, but this simply inserts an image into the note. There's no way to use this tool to take notes over multiple pages, or to use it for annotation as far as I can tell. I've also found it to the buggy, with full pages of notes lost if you switch away from Evernote to another app before saving the image and returning to the normal notes view. I will say that that, though the tool is very limited, with very few options, the Pencil support works well and writing is fluid. This tool seems to have the most potential for future development. Finally, there is Penultimate -- a separate app I want to love but is just too buggy, too limited, and too walled off from the rest of Evernote to be truly useful. Again, no support for importing PDFs/annotation, yet another approach to handwriting, and, though the Penultimate notes live in Evernote, nothing can be done with them in the main app. Why, at this stage, would Evernote have three separate, incompatible and incongruous approaches to annotation/note taking, none of which begin to match the functionality of some of the other apps named? Attached PDFs can certainly be opened in other apps, such as PDF Expert, but there is no way to get the annotated PDFs back into an Evernote note without deleting the original attachment and reattaching the PDF. That's cumbersome, and annotation seems like pretty basic functionality that Evernote should offer. Evernote certainly has some broader advantages over OneNote, but really needs to explore something like the "canvas" style approach used by OneNote. The ability to "print" PDFs to a OneNote page and then markup the document itself and take notes/add text/etc. all on one page is invaluable. I've pretty much switched all note taking/PDF annotation to OneNote, with Evernote still used for project management and other organizational needs, which leaves me with my own fragmentation. Maybe I'm missing something in Evernote's approach, but I'm a longtime user that's completely frustrated with Evernote's inferior support for annotation and handwritten notes.

    Hi all, We were recently advised by LinkedIn that they are making changes to their infrastructure. Unfortunately, this means that after mid-July, third-party apps like Evernote and Scannable will no longer have any access to LinkedIn data. What does this mean? Any LinkedIn profile information you’ve already added to a note will remain. But you won’t be able to see a LinkedIn user’s details, or connect with them, when you scan a new business card in Evernote. You’ll also lose the ability to add content from your own LinkedIn profile to your Evernote account, or see LinkedIn information using our Context feature. What will happen? Within the next couple of weeks, we’ll be rolling out updates for iOS and Android that will remove the LinkedIn connection. You don’t need to take any specific action other than keeping your app up to date. Mac and Windows updates are currently available. If you haven’t updated your mobile app by mid-July (or if you’re using a desktop app) you’ll still see the option to connect to LinkedIn when you scan a business card, but nothing will happen. Despite these changes, we want to be clear about one thing: business card scanning is not going away. You’ll still be able to: Take a picture of a business card and save it in Evernote Add the person to contacts on your mobile device Email your own info to the person Find the business card later using Evernote’s text recognition feature The LinkedIn integration was an awesome feature and we’re sorry to see it go. But we’re still committed to helping you work smarter and keep your life organized. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out to me directly!

    I have been an EN user since Beta, and became a Premium user as soon as it was offered. I do not understand why EN is lagging with simple security options, such as easy encryption of notes and notebooks. This really should be as easy as a Right-Click or selection in properties for a Note or Notebook. The existing method of selecting text in a note and then using a Right-Click option to encrypt it is cumbersome at best. Yes, it is a nice feature if one wants to encrypt only a portion of a note. That's fine. But there should be an easy way to (1) encrypt an entire note without selecting text and (2) encrypt an entire notebook. I would be willing to pay a few bucks extra a year for this additional encryption ability. Seems this should be a no-brainier for EN, both as a tech matter and as a business/profit matter.

    Thanks for your request @s2sailor. Reminders are a hot topic across a number of different forum threads and social media conversations related to our efforts to converge the UX. Thread tone ranges from the productive ("what are you going to do with reminders?") to the understandably impatient ("why haven't you implemented reminders yet?") all the way to imminent doom ("oh no! they're going to take reminders away!"). In response to your constructive question - thank you! - let me provide the following update: 1. Reminders are used by a relatively small cross-section of our user population (about 1%, believe it or not). That's why it's not the first thing we've focussed on. 2. We believe reminders are important. Partially because some of those 1% are our most engaged users, but also because reminders is functionality that helps you do more than simply remember things, by asking Evernote to surface something back to you at a relevant time, they help you accomplishing something. And we think that is important. A better design for reminders might get more than 1% of users taking advantage of it. 3. Finally, as they are implemented today, reminders are one of the most divergently designed functional elements of Evernote across all the devices we support - both from a UX and a functionality standpoint. Reminders are implemented, displayed, and controlled very differently across Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and the Web. Part of our journey this year has been about trying to converge the UX across all our devices, so that Evernote users can expect to access a common set of functionality in a predictable and coherent way across all the devices on which they use us. Obviously, we are applying this as a design principle, not as a design constraint - mobile phones have built-in cameras, and so we need to expose functionality on mobile devices for which there is a less-than-obvious corollary on a desktop system. The same applies to OS-specific capabilities (eg. Siri, Android widgets, etc.). But as much as possible, we'd like to make common features - like reminders - work the same way with the same UX and the same functionality across all devices. The reason we haven't shown anything about reminders yet is because we haven't yet decided how exactly to do that, both for the functionality that already exists and in terms of future-proofing against where we'd like to take reminders in the long run. When we have a design for reminders that we think satisfies all the criteria we have for it, we'll be more than happy to put it in front of you. Given the timelines we are on, it's hard to predict at this point whether that will be via a video or through an actual beta release. And a quick word of reassurance to anyone focussed on the imminent doom scenario: No, we're not taking reminders away. We're just trying to get them right. Back to lurking ian

    Hi All, Starting with Apple’s upcoming release of Safari 13, many extensions will no longer be supported in their current form. Due to the nature of these changes, if you choose to update to Safari 13 it will affect your ability to use the Evernote Web Clipper extension until we are able to implement an update and publish it to the Mac App Store. Please note: 1. We are diligently working to update the Evernote Web Clipper to meet the new extension requirements for Safari 13. Until that time, users who upgrade their browser to Safari 13 will not be able to use the Evernote Web Clipper. 2. If you are not updating to macOS Catalina/Safari 13, you can continue to use the Evernote Web Clipper extension. 3. For a small number of Evernote Business users, it may be a few months before they are able to use Evernote Web Clipper in macOS Catalina/Safari 13. If you are one of the affected users, we will send you a separate email with more information. If you are affected by these changes, you can still clip/send content to Evernote by doing the following: Keep using your current version of Safari Use the Evernote Web Clipper on a different web browser Use our Gmail and Outlook email integrations Forward messages to your Evernote email address (Premium & Business only)

    Hi all - First, Shane's question relates to the new "checklist" feature which was demonstrated in the second Behind the Scenes video on the new note editor. (Hint: if you haven't seen that video, go watch it now, none of this thread will make sense otherwise! I'll wait until you're done.) Internally, everyone at Evernote can participate in testing by "dogfooding" new builds, so we've all had access to the checklist feature for a while now as our development and design teams work out the kinks in that and other parts of the new Note Editor. So for Shane, it was a reasonable followup question to ask me about one of the features we demonstrated in an earlier BTS video - a feature which created a lot of response from the community. Second, to try to help sort out the apparent confusion around "betas": The Evernote web beta - what I tend to refer to in the videos as the "modern web experience" - is broadly available to any Evernote user and has been in place for about a year now. We still label this build beta because we do not view it yet as feature complete - there are a few key features missing before we would consider it our GA web experience. Nonetheless, as you've seen in a number of the videos, the Evernote web beta is what we are using as the basis for our forward-looking web work. A preview release of the new note editor has been available by invitation only (and under NDA, which is why you haven't heard about it broadly outside of the relevant Behind the Scenes video) to a relatively small audience for the last several months. Over that period, we've been collecting feedback and modifying our implementation in response to that feedback, working on bugs, and converging on performance levels that we are happy with, all while continuing to work through the feature punch list which we believe (based on the feedback we have received to date) will constitute a complete version. At this point, the new note editor has been released as an optional beta to a small % of users who are using our modern web experience (the Evernote web beta). So, as some posts have commented above (and shown screenshots), if you are using the Evernote web beta, you may have access to the note editor beta in the bottom right corner of the window. Early versions of the new note editor have also been bundled into preview releases of an early Windows client, released to a very small number of users by invitation only (and also under NDA). At this point, there is no other way to get access to the new note editor. We are not looking for individuals to sign up to the note editor beta at this point. We have transitioned from small numbers of individual users invited one-by-one to the preview into small percentages of the entire Evernote web user population being given access to the beta. We still have a lot of work to go for the new note editor to be ready for broad release; we appreciate your patience while we continue to work on bugs, performance, and remaining functionality. Third, you can expect *more* betas, not less. One of the things I've been pretty consistent about in our communications is that we're adopting a posture of testing everything we're working on - from very early stages where we test design mockups with individual users, through to very early prototype builds that we test under NDA on an invitation-only basis (thanks to all of you who have been participating and helping in one or more of those), through to phased beta rollouts to larger segments of our audience - all of which happens before we go GA on a particular component. We have restructured the way in which we do development at Evernote so that multiple subsections within the product can be driven independently, which in turn means that we can beta different "parts" of the product independently. Our ability to beta subsections of any build independently of the rest is something that you will see more of in the future. It's part of what we need to be able to do in order for Evernote to return to innovation at speed. Fourth, with respect to tags, my Spidey-sense detects the beginning of a small-scale twister as members of the community, with the best of intentions, take two sentences I said in a video and start to extrapolate what they could possibly mean. If there is an actual twister, it's always wise to take cover. But at the same time, we should probably try to avoid creating man-made twisters when it's not really necessary. In order to attempt to defuse this twister mid-formation, let me re-emphasize what I said on the video: (1) tagging is super important to a big chunk of our users (2) tagging is supported in wildly varying ways across different devices (just try Android vs. iOS, if you don't believe me) and (3) we'd like to take the best of tagging from across various devices and make a more consistent, coherent tagging interface across all devices in the Evernote family. What I specifically didn't say: that we were somehow going to rework the theory of tags. No. Not happening. Fifth, one more observation that I suspect is generally applicable beyond this particular thread: if I say that one of the things we're going to focus on in an *upcoming* episode of Behind the Scenes is topic X, and that episode hasn't aired yet, it's probably a safe bet that whatever you can see in a production version of Evernote you have downloaded today regarding topic X is probably *not* representative of what we're going to talk about. After all, we wouldn't need a Behind the Scenes video series for that... we'd just point you at the software. Hope all that is helpful. First, we will be enabling a feature called Best Answer that will enable the person that starts a thread to mark a specific reply/comment as the ‘Best Answer’. This will then mark the thread as ‘answered’, and enable other users to quickly see that the question has been answered. To mark a reply as a Best Answer simply click on the 'check mark' icon in upper left hand corner of the post you're marking: When marked with a Best Answer, the thread will look like this: Then, you can see the 'Best Answer' clearly marked in list of forum posts: Our hope is that the Best Answer feature will better enable users who are asking questions to get the information they’re looking for, while also enabling users that have similar questions to find that same information more easily. Secondly, we’ve received a lot of feedback on the similarities between the FAQ’s and Best Practices sections. As there is a lot of overlap between the two, we’ll be merging the FAQ’s and Best Practices into a single forum under the banner FAQ's: Best Answers Moving forward, the FAQ's: Best Answers section of the forums will become a repository for the Best Answers we see in the other parts of the forums. Essentially, think of the FAQ's: Best Answers sections as a sort of best answers hall of fame.

    @emmgee I just wanted to let you know that I passed on your insightful post directly to Ian, and can verify that he personally read the complete post. If he wasn't super busy right now trying to come up-to-speed and meet with everybody, I think he'd like to personally respond to everybody on the forum and engage in a conversation. He may still if he finds some free time soon. But, I encourage everybody on here to continue to engage in these conversations. We might not always be able to respond, but we're listening.

    Have to disqualify myself right out of the gate as I'm Canadian... but... here's my current dashboard note. As you can see, it is setup with basically just a slew of 'note links' - I wanted it to be mobile device friendly too so no wide table columns where I would have issues with scrolling left/right too to get to notes - so the two left columns are the high important items that I can scroll and tap on with mobile devices. I have a basic image banner on the top of the page (I do this with a lot of other 'master notes' as well - just to add some splash of color/etc), then a basic 3 column table with some note links - each of those note links are for a master note too - I run everything from my grocery list to major multi million dollar project management out of evernote and the bulk of it starts right here (well, main work stuff has it's own dashboard). Example: my "scuba" entry under reference get's me into my scuba diver "log book" - which is a master note showing me all my current scuba diving certifications, planned certifications, tasks (rescue course re-certifications), and a link out to my scuba diving travel ideas note. Of course, my scuba log book master note wouldn't be complete without a link to my scuba diving log book - with details and photos from every dive - and yes, this is all in Evernote too. Evernote also is a CRM for me - so you can see a few people listed under "Important" - I have another master note that breaks down my people based on friends, professional, business, etc. Significant actions with "people" get tagged with their name and a "-chronology" suffix (ie ejohn-chronology) - my CRM section assembles all those notes into a chronological list so when I drill down to the person in the CRM (or the main dashboard) I get a chronological list of my communications with that person - and even other reference notes that I may have tagged with their info (ie assigned work projects, home projects, etc). Anyway, I could go on and on about this, but shall cut my rambling short here. Let me know if you have questions on more of my setup or want some 'secondary' master page photos. Thought I'd update my post and show a 'secondary' dashboard - this one shows up when I click 'health' on the main dashboard. All those other links on the primary go to a second 'dashboard' note like this one - just related to the topic instead:
