  1. I've been a long user of Evernote on iOs, Mac, Windows, and web. I keep a weekly note for simple todos and such. Its organized with bullet points and has worked fine for a year+. Within the past couple days however I'm noticing that frequently the depth and spacing of bulleted items gets completely wrecked when I come back to a note. This Is How It Should Look But I'll come back to the note or load it from mobile, or from web (there's no set pattern as to the cause) And The Note Now Looks Like This And I can't just go back up to those bullets and tab them over. It's completely hosed in the metadata. I try to tab and it ends up like First line Broken indent Broken indent Example shots attached. This is an extremely breaking bug. For my usage of Evernote, this renders the product entirely broken. What the hell is going on?

  2. Hi - I'm in the process of switching TO EverNote from Microsoft Office 365's OneNote. I use it on a MAC so there isn't an "export" function, but I can access the cloud drive with the onenote files on it. How can I pull the two notebooks I have over there to migrate them into EverNote? Thanks in advance for any specific assistance. William Avon

  3. Anyone have tips on how to get out of Evernote. I've absolutely hit the wall of tolerance for the tool. The interface gets worse with every update, and my team is about to explode with frustration. Any thoughts on how to get out? I'd like to be able to export into something useful, but the XML and HTML export options aren't exactly easy to work with or useful. (Thanks Evernote - one more reminder that it's time to get out.) I might move to Google Drive, or just Dropbox for now, but I want the notebooks in something more useful. Anyone found an easy path?

  4. Just make a note with the information that you would want to collect. Maybe make it a two-column table. Now you have a template for a call note. Add tags to represent topics. Generating an Excel sheet? Well, you can export, on a note-by-note basis, to HTML, which Excel can read. That may not be convenient, though. I suppose you could make a note with a table that has rows for individual calls, and columns for each bit of information that you want to capture. You can't sort that in Evernote, but you can export the whole thing to Excel. You may need to use a dedicated call-logging app; it just might be easier all around...

  5. I don't think anyone has posted anything like that. Some people seem wedded to hierarchical filing, others are willing to adapt to tags. Evernote -by their own choice so far- only does tags. (Except - look at what 'Spaces' can do - that might be more your speed.) If tags don't work for you, it's possible you're using the wrong application. If anything the main argument here is like saying you love Pizza, but you just wish they'd stop putting cheese and tomato on it because you hate the taste. Best suggestion might be - stop buying pizza...

  9. Can anyone recommend an alternative to Evernote? It used to be the best thing since sliced bread. Now it seems the developers have abandoned its former staunch supporters. After months of wasting my time trying to follow suggestions on how to actually get something typed into a note with waiting for the endless blue circle and white screens, I'm about give up. Check this, uncheck that -none of this ever helped. (rebuilding indexes, etc, etc, etc.) This is the same on two PC's. I have almost 30,00 notes that I need to access and add to on a daily basis.. I could finish a sandwich by the time I accomplish anything now in Evernote. It used to be snappy, now it's a whale washed up on shore. Too bad, this app is no longer supported by passionate developers. Now, I just have to figure how to get out from under the pile of ineptitude. These are my thoughts. What are yours? -Bill Mozer, A VERY Disappointed Customer

  10. Hierarchy of notebooks/stacks should be a given. Currently the only thing keeping from using Evernote over OneNote is the lack of hierarchy. I really, really would prefer to use Evernote, but no matter what I try (hours and hours of experimenting) nothing is right for me. Yes, I have tried tag hierarchy. I like my notes to be in one place, one notebook, and for tags to be something additional. That is how my brain works and is the genius behind applications like Workflowy and Todoist. If hierarchical tags are enough for you, good for you, but everyone doesn't need to be just like you. There is no universal "right" way to take notes, what is right is what is right for you. A good app offers a variety of options to many different people who think in many different ways. I happen to be non-neurotypical and frankly the posts that are like "I can't see why you could possibly need this" frustrate me. Of course you can't, because it isn't how you think, but can you recognize and accept the fact that some people do think that way even though it isn't how you do? And yes, I have found another app to use. OneNote. It isn't perfect but I have weighed the pros and cons of each application over a few years, and have in general experimented with many note-taking platforms (I genuinely enjoy doing so.) I have found OneNote to be the better choice when I weigh the pros and cons, but that all would change if Evernote had notebook hierarchy. So yeah that's the reason I have come on here to comment, because I really do want things to improve with Evernote. Also I want to add notebooks don't necessarily have to be under notebooks in a hierarchy, it could actually just be stacks under stacks, with no sub-notebooks and only sub-stacks. Honestly either way would be nice if there were just true hierarchy. Also something that makes a huge difference when it comes to notebook hierarchy vs. tag hierarchy is that with tag hierarchy you lose the ability to share things as one notebook. Since Evernote prioritizes collaboration a lot you would think this would be important to them.

  12. * Not an EN employee. It's never coming back (I'm grandfathered into Plus user). I've been EN paid subscriber for about 6 years or so, and never really needed more than basic-free, but upgraded my subscription many years ago just because I thought the app was good enough to deserve my support. I have been unable to upgrade now since v6.7.. stuck at that version due to serious flaws in all subsequent versions, read the forums, you will see lots of problems. The kind of problems you will see I *never* have with all of my windows client software, word processors, local note apps, lots of other apps. There are many persistent problems in EN release versions since 6.7 up through 6.11 GA. Many of them don't get fixed. Version 11 some some of us (I don't know how many) have validated a issue where our notes can't be edited at all. This issue persists through the current v6.12 beta 2 as I checked. I would say a very serious flaw. Tech support said the problem has been confirmed and that "production" was working to find a solution. It seem pretty important to be able to edit a note. I have never had any issues with EN until the versions past 6.7. I would suggest you to be very careful here. Start basic, go through a few updates. See if you catch any problems. Don't invest too many important notes, because you can't get them back if something goes wrong with basic, with Premium you can access a history (carefully manipulated limitation to push customers toward Premium). I have a lot of important notes and have always had unquestionable confidence with EN, except for the last 5 versions. At some point EN is going to stop supporting Windoze 7 (understandable), which I plan to keep well after 2020, or at some point they will need to revise the dB and I won't be able to advance past v6.7.. Just my 23 cents I hate to sound so negative, but EN has always been on the top 3 list of most important app on my PC, after eMail, browser, EN .. and latest updates and failure to address some of the issues has got me starting to ask what options do I have. EN is a very nice app, But so many problems lately that I have never seen before in 6 something years

  13. I'm also a linux user, so I have no choice but to use the web version. And I can't install Safari either. A few moments ago, for the 20th time, I've witnessed a note with multiple pages of nested bulletpoints completely reformatted, with all the nesting removed. This is data loss, plain and simple. Completely invalidates the purpose of Evernote as a safe universal store of information. Anyone know an Evernote alternative that works on linux, supports rich text / HTML, and can import Evernote data? This issue has been known for a month and remains unsolved. I don't know that I can continue waiting for a fix while watching my data being screwed up on a daily basis.

  14. I've been having the same issues for weeks. I use the Evernote desktop app on my home computer (Windows machine) and the iOS app on my iPhone, but do not want to pay to have a third app on my work computer, so use the web version (Chrome) at work. Now, almost daily, I have to reformat every list I touch during the day when I get home that night. It's terribly frustrating. Why can't we get a fix for it? I almost stopped using Evernote when they started limiting the number of devices, and now this issue may force me to do just that.

  15. Can confirm this mirrors my experience. And unfortunately, I can't just fall back on desktop client because I'm primarily a Linux user and Evernote has no native Linux client...all the available apps are wrappers around the web client and all using Chromium as the backend So, yeah, my interface with Evernote is fully borked until they fix this. This might finally get me to switch off using EN.

  16. Hi, I'm having the exactly same problem, it's not a connection issue, it's a browser issue. That happens in Google Chrome and for what I look around seems that Google update Chrome and broke some parts of the Web Client, then Evernote team go back in time and revert the Web Client to an old version, because those bugs were already been solved in the past. I'm not from Evernote team and I deduced that for what I read. It's been a week this is happening. I tried in Firefox and that happens too, the only Web Client that I found that still works fine is Safari. An alternative is use the desktop client and apps, but if you change something in the note from the Web Client and save, the note will be broken again. It would be interesting if the Evernote team could confirm or not what I said and give us a deadline for the fix, because this problem really leaves the product totally broken. Long time user

  25. Adding my voice to the chorus requesting user chosen thumbnail selection across all devices. With the new plan changes (limiting my free account to 2 devices when I regularly use 3 but will get by with browser access on one of them) I am so, so very close to upgrading to Plus but I just can't justify the cost based on the way I use Evernote. The powerful text searching is great but I search visually as well. I have sewing patterns that display the envelope back rather than the front and recipes that show thumbnails of the clipped instructions rather than the money shot.

  28. I wanted to mention that Evernote selected an speaker icon for a thumbnail. There is audio in there but an icon for a representation of a note?I'm a little disappointed about this especially after spending $25 for this oversight. I wonder why the push back for user selected thumbnails? I'm glad I'm not totally invested in these notes because I'm going to cancel the account if there is no plan to change this.

  30. Yes, +1 to this request, it's rather frustrating as a premium user not to be able to select which image in the note becomes the thumbnail. I note that the previous thread/suggestion discussing this feature is now closed, after 300+ comments, so no way to add my vote there. Evernote - is this on the feature list? Thanks.
    1 point
  31. This is by no means ideal but I've found if you don't need the image shown at all, then delete this image from your note then Evernote may choose the image you want as a thumbnail. Like so many others I'd would also like to add my vote to this request - let us choose our thumbnail image.

  32. I'd like to add my vote to this (old) request. Please, add a "Set image as Thumbnail" feature to the client. I can state my reasons, but I believe everything has already been said in this (and other similar) posts. It's basically a big convenience factor for people who use multiple images in the same post. Cheers.

  33. Evernote! Is anybody listening?? This is the number one issue for me (has been since the card view was introduced). I've started using ember for mac for this one reason alone but maintaining both services is a pain. I'd love to just be able to use evernote. For those of us who use evernote for primarily for images and screenshots, having half of the card covered with a title and text severely limits the user experience and effectiveness of the app.

  36. Has anyone actually ever seen a response from Evernote regarding this?? Seems a little disrespectful of a company who's paying customers repeatedly ask for a feature - and for years, to be completely ignored. If there's a reason why they can't do it or if they do plan to do it in some sort of near future, why can't they at least respond?

  37. Yeah, the danger I see with this already is that while the desktops of several computers I use shall be clean, and my google drive less messy -- I'll end up with a digital closet that looks like an episode of "Hoaders" with this. I ran into one glitch with copy / pasting some notes from a plain text file into an ever-note already but then on the plus side, I can already think of one scenario that would have been useful to me recently in regards to having quick access to some PDF files I typically need to find on their source web site(s) whenever I need to reference them, so I can see this being useful. I already keep most of my "notes" for things in a google drive, but this seems to be a step up from that. I read a couple of lifehacker articles about things people are doing with EN that were a little bit outside of the box and it inspired me to give it another shot. I tried it a few years back and just couldn't get into it.

  38. LOL -- I guess I am passionate about good UI experiences. I am going to give it an honest try because I think the benefits outweigh the things that "irritate" me before I slam the door shut. There is no such thing as a perfect system that makes EVERYONE happy in every way, and developer should make that his/her goal either. I'm a visual person and can agree with people in here who say being able to choose which image they'd like for the note will help them spot it in a list view (which is the whole point of having one). It would not be hard, since they already scrape the content to find all the images in the first place -- to create an easy way for a user to simply choose which one to use, or disable it. I know the goal of the "everything bucket" concept of having a place for "digital hoarders" to keep their stuff somewhat organized isn't to make eveything "pretty" -- but I think there's a wider benefit than being able to choose "eye candy" for your notes here.
    1 point
  39. Well, after looking at explanation of how the "largest smallest" dimensions determine which image becomes the thumbnail, it makes more sense from a development standpoint as that is a simpler approach than letting the user choose their image -- but from a usability standpoint -- who really wants to see a bunch of banner ads attached to their notes in the list views -- images that have nothing to do whatsoever with the content of the note? I am still shocked that nobody has addressed this with users for the last 3 years people seem to have been asking for it.
    1 point
  40. WOW!!!! I decided to try Evernote after having abandoned the idea several years ago. Within 15 minutes of starting to use it I began to wonder how I can change the thumbnail image represented on notes -- because web clippings are pulling in BANNER ADS to append to the note thumbnails. Then I started reading all these threads about how people have been requesting this feature for several years and being ignored. I'm done with Evernote now for good -- after a single hour of playing around with it. Just thought I'd throw that in there. It typically doesn't take me long to reject apps based on completely stupid UI decisions -- and this is just another example. I'm beyond shocked that the whole point of Evernote is to organize your notes -- and it doesn't even let you choose a thumbnail image??? I am a UI developer who maintains a very large web app. One of the features of this app is the ability to scrape content such as articles from sites and pull it into our system. We give our users a left / right arrow to CHOOSE which image represents their content instead of doing all this hogwash to have a ROBOT try and figure out what the user wants. How about just let the USER choose what the USER wants to do? It is much simpler from a development standpoint AND makes the users happy too. We even let them CROP the damn images before they are imported into our system. I mean, this is standard fare, considering that's also how FACEBOOK works. How the imbiciles who threw this app together can't figure THAT out just shows me this app will get on my nerves even more if I tried to use it for a week.

  42. I'm a Mac user as well. I've tried too, doesn't seem to work for me either. Any word from Evernote on whether they are working on this? I'm debating finding another program to use as this is becoming too frustrating to deal with.
    1 point
  43. It's getting increasingly frustrating that this is not an option. I use images extensively for art projects and the thumbnails are the quickest way to visually identify notes - however, as reference photos are added the thumbnail changes and identification becomes confusing. Definitely a +1 from me!
    1 point
  44. YES! This would be so helpful. I use Evernote as a database to keep track of my sewing patterns. Each note has a image of the front of the pattern (completed item picture), and the back of the pattern (words/numbers). When the back of the pattern ends up as the thumbnail, it's pretty useless as a way to quickly browse through to see what I have. Hopefully that explanation made sense. It would be a lot easier to just pick which picture to have as a thumbnail than to have to manually go and resize images.
    1 point
  45. I've read some earlier posts about this problem, but I want to bring it up again and also offer another suggestion for a solution. I want to reiterate that it's really frustrating to not be able to choose a thumbnail photo. One of the things I use EN very heavily for is as a database of artists for my job. Each artist has a card and I like to have a photo of them and an example of their artwork. Both images are important to me and to the database's function, but it would be hugely helpful if the thumbnail for each card in snippet view was the artist's artwork, not their photo – since when I'm scrolling in that view it's the style of artwork I'm scanning for. I agree with the developers that the "largest smallest-dimension" algorithm does work a lot of the time, but it doesn't always, and it's a huge pain to try to resize images to get them in the correct ratio. I am super OCD about things like that and I've tried but actually have given up. I'm not suggesting a fancy option in the settings that creates a rule for how EN chooses the thumbnail – that sounds like way too much development work and I totally appreciate that (1) the thumbnail doesn't matter that much in a lot of cases and (2) it would cause a lot of issues with webpage banners, etc. My request is to create an option when the image is selected and right-clicked in desktop version (i.e. like how you rotate the image) that is something like "set image as thumbnail." I hope that this could be a good compromise solution to this issue that wouldn't pose the same difficulties as creating a series of complicated rules in settings, but would still allow users flexibility and control in selecting a thumbnail when it does actually matter a lot. Thank you!
    1 point
  46. REQUEST – It would be amazing to have a feature where an image can be selected, and when you right-click (ie, the same way you rotate it, etc.) there could also be an option to override the "largest smallest-dimension" algorithm and set that image as the note's thumbnail. A little background –– One thing I use EN for very heavily is as an artist database for my job. I really like having both a photo of the artist and an example of their artwork at the top of their card. However, when I'm scrolling through snippet or card view, it would be really helpful to have the image of their artwork always be the one to show up. This usually happens but there are a few times where the photo of the artist is used instead. I've read up on the algorithm that chooses the image with the "largest smallest-dimension" (PS, see what I did there with the hyphen? Way clearer that way.) and I am actually OCD enough to try to amend the file sizes to have the algorithm pick the right one. However, even this doesn't seem to work – it's probably me because I guess an algorithm can't lie, but even when I resize the images, it's still not choosing the right one. So my question is – why would that be happening? Could it be that once EN's algorithm chooses an image, it always chooses that filename even when the size changes? But what would be SO MUCH EASIER is my *request* – could there be an override option to the largest smallest-dimension algorithm (which I agree does work at least half of the time for me) to choose a thumbnail? I'm not talking some fancy thing in the settings where you tell EN how to pick your thumbnails – that sounds like way more work than it's worth. I just imagine, like I've said above, having the image you want to be the thumbnail highlighted/selected, then right click (in the same way that you can rotate an image, etc.) and have something like "set as note thumbnail." Please?? Thank you!

  47. At this point, I'm done, too. The most important issue is that I don't trust that my data is safe with Evernote. The webclipper issue - prior to a certain date (2015 I think), anything you've clipped from the web is a broken link. This destroyed so many important things, and I have no idea where to find the images (some were from a course website that I don't have access to anymore since graduating). I have seen no fixes. Missing notes - Now and then it's been relevant to search for an older note, and there are maybe a dozen that I'm unable to find no matter what I try. I'm sure a portion of these were my fault - perhaps I exited before the note was saved, or perhaps I thought I made a note but didn't. But there are some that I can visualize the exact wording of, especially if I uploaded an image that I remember so well, and I cannot find them no matter what search terms & synonyms I use, even if I go back to notes I know I created around the same time and scroll through a few hundred, I can't find them. I have 2,000 notes - that's a lot, but not so many that I'm just not finding these notes due to not looking hard enough. Unsaved edits - similar to above, I'm sure some issues were purely my fault, like exiting before the edit was saved (although usually Evernote is constantly saving changes so it's hard to predict when an edit would or wouldn't be saved). Other issues were due to switching between platforms, and unfortunately a conflicting version wasn't saved. Like you, I also have issues with bugs that take forever to fix or are still unsolved (bulleted lists being stripped of formatting when opened on a browser; having to double-click to continue writing a note if you clicked outside the Evernote client; fonts randomly changing when I go back to a note). And there are also some features that I want, but don't see coming on the horizon (symbols list for degree symbol, greek letters, accented letters, etc.; different highlighter colors; and so on). Considering all this, plus the maddening inability to create a ticket if you aren't a premium subscriber, I am planning to leave Evernote.
