  1. Feature Request: Add Outlining Capabilities to Evernote Evernote is great, but it's dying for the ability to create Notes that contain Outlines which are easily collapsed and expanded during creation and in use. One way to implement it would be a switchable editing mode, between standard formatting or outline mode. In outline mode, pressing the Enter key creates a new outline item, and pressing the Tab key changes the current item into a sub-item. Clicking on an item's action icon causes its sub-items to collapse out of, or expand into view. That's the way the Ecco Pro PIM did it, and something simple like that would be a good start for Evernote. The name Evernote implies a product that takes notes -and collapsible/expandable outlines are a huge part of note taking.

  3. I love Evernote, but it's preventing me from putting in sensitive content. For example, I can't keep a personal journal notebook, because other people (i.e. girlfriend, family members, etc.) could one day be looking at those notes, especially since they know that I use Evernote often for many purposes. Evernote already has the ability to encrypt single notes. This is useful for things like storing passwords or other temporary sensitive content. But it's not practical to encrypt many notes one by one. I wish I could password-protect a whole notebook. This way, I can do a lot more with Evernote. If I can encrypt single notes, then why can't Evernote just allow me to encrypt entire notebooks? If reason behind this is because Evernote thinks one could lose a lot of data if a notebook password is forgotten, then perhaps Evernote can help recover the passwords through email. In the meantime, I'm stuck with using other apps (i.e. Pages, Day One, etc) to password-protect my content. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  6. I think given the frustration of users from the preview, beta and now the general release about the removal of functions and sparse information about which may still be under development, I think it would be a good idea for Evernote to publish a full roadmap to show which features are coming and a list of those that have been removed for good. I don't think this would even need dates, just a list of features with a guide as to In Development | Coming Later | Removed Permanently and to show where the new client is going. I think this would give users a clear indication of what to expect and maybe a little faith back. Communication goes a long way with things like this. Personally I would really like to see this, especially as I feel a lot of the beta feedback has been ignored. My premium subscription renewed a little while ago so I am going to cancel my auto renewal, then if it improves before it is due again (and I really hope it does) I will consider re-instating it. I am afraid I cant see the value in paying for this when there are other products available that suite my workflow better than the current build. I have enjoyed Evernote for years but personally feel this is a step back in terms of product development. If you agree please think about giving this post a vote in the hope it is picked up by the team.

  7. I think it's obvious, at this point, that Evernote users want the ability to select the default thumbnail for notes. I agree that it seems ridiculous that this conversation started in 2013 and 4 years later this hasn't been added to the application. As a visual person, the thumbnail helps me quickly find what I'm looking for. For example, when I'm looking for a recipe for pancakes, an image of the video (pertaining to the recipe) of two cooks doesn't help me find what I'm looking for. I need to be able to select the pic of the stack of pancakes. The whole purpose for using Evernote is to be able to organize things so that they are easily found/accessed. I'm confused why this isn't already an option. This seems so simple to implement. Can we get some love on this issue?!

  8. I do like the new layout with larger thumbnails, except for one thing: Evernote seems to choose as thumbnail the largest image within a note. But it is rather annoying, for it seldom coincides with the image which would enable me to recognize a note at once. Can I somehow force Evernote to use a specific image as thumbail? Marcelo

  9. In order to be able to view tasks by context without removing it from the project (= note) it would be great to have tags for tasks. In addition to that I would like to group them by Tag in the tasks view.

  10. I think Evernote is a fantastic product, especially with the iPhone integration. I currently use a program called UltraRecall because of it's heavy use of subfolders. This makes organizing my data very logical. I was wondering if Evernotes has a way to create subnotebooks under existing notebooks to help group numerious notebooks together? Example Notebooks: Work Clients Customer1 Customer2 Customer3 Customer4 Personal Electronics Web Clips

  11. Dear All, I really would love to see a solution for archiving notes. I've been using for 4 years and now I have some notes that I want to keep in the system, but want to remove from my search. As time goes, my search are getting more difficult to separate valid information and archived information. Like we have Notes, Notebook, Tags, Atlas, Market and Premium button on the Mac version, I dream with an Archive button. Every note I move to this icon will make it not searchable, unless I'm searching inside the Archive View. You could even move a completely Notebook. I have many scenarios where this is valid, some of them here: You finished a graduation course full of notes and you want these notes in a place that you may need but normally it will not be part of your search or have a distract visual in All Notes ViewYou closed a company and want all the notes in a special placeYou may not want to have this Archive notes in your local hard disk, unless you click "Download"You prepare for a vacation and suddenly canceled. You want to have this hide in some place but not displaying all the time. I think it would be a great feature. Thank you, Patrick Santana

  12. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back tabs! I use the Mac version, and tabs are essential (as mentioned by another poster). I always have several tabs open. I have a Daily Work List that is my main tab and I click on other tabs for doing other work. As a Premium subscriber, I believe that EN should have taken a user survey before making the incredible decision to jerk tabs out.

  13. Dear Evernote Dev Team, I am an long-time Evernote Premium user, fan and advocate. It is part of my daily workflow, for hours per day I might add. You guys have done a wonderful job with this product and my hat goes off to you... However, this feature would be HUGE to me, and apparently many others. PLEASE consider adding this feature sooner than later. As mentioned, I am loyal but I have begun to research alternatives that would offer this feature. I really don't want to switch though. just being honest You guys rock!!! Best Regards, Craig

  15. I`ve just installed the new v. 10 and I just couldn't believe my eyes: oh, no, they kept most of the horrible beta version they realeased a few weeks ago! I would't call it an upgrade. I see it as a new concept, a whole new design - and they turned the back to old customers, simple as that. I spend 90%> of my computer time at Evernote. It has been so for the past 11 years, my workflow is based on Evernote, I have thousands of notes. They messed everything up. My first shock (not yet recovered): they killed the local databases and syncing. Who asked me if I want to have all my notes on the cloud ALONE? I'm collecting a list of missing functions and I'll add to this node. For now, my statement is that the downgraded their own piece of software. They sacrified a robust desktop client in favour to an Andoid-like app: just the basics. Not my idea of a note taking software.

  16. This is a very, very, long-standing HTML feature, and oh so very useful for long notes. Two features I see essential for long (more than one page/screen) notes: Anchors/bookmarks Collapsible sections Both have been available in web pages since the early days of the web (late 1990's). ATTN: Evernote/ @Jackolicious, @SoftwareMarcus, @Justin Street: Come on, this is the very definition of productivity!

  17. It's unbelievable how such a good product can turn into such a bad thing that it induces a customer from years of using the product and the platform to start a process of mass migration of their data to the competition. How can a company do not make a market research, a survey among its loyal customers about what they expect or not from a new version. To me, if Evernote continues like this, it really died. And there it is to look for alternatives to other products, which maybe don't have all the features of Evernote but at least they don't charge us for what they can't offer, different from Evernote which keeps charging and at the same time has removed crucial functions for me. Let's go to the list of CRUCIAL functions that have been removed, and that for me disfigure the whole product: - There is no way to change the color of lateral toolbar from Dark. - There is no way to put shortcuts list in the top of screen. It will not move anymore - There are only FIVE Fonts. For me that store computer code in the notes, it is A TERRIBLE choice - Desktop App is a web based one, and notes are not synchronized anymore. Just turn off your Ethernet adapter and the program will not show notes anymore. The proof is that you are able to show "developer options" that show a web page render in the right side of the screen. Another proof is you can use the old classic version side by side with the new one, so the new version 10 is not using the database files that is stored locally. - I can't change the Interface Language. I like to use English Interface, since I can have a lot of info in foruns instead to get translated the Brazilian version to English one. - I can't create a Notebook inside the Notebook stack as I always did. You need to first create the Notebook, then move it to stack - I can't grab a screen capture anymore - I can't Paste text directly to Evernote note (CTRL+shitf+V) anymore - I can't import a folder anymore - I can't un-stack a Notebook from a stack using right click mouse. I need to drag an drop them. - I can't narrow a search inside a specific Notebook or Notebook Stack. Please, if you noted some another missing feature, feel free to contribute to this list.

  21. I regret to have downloaded the new version of evernote, as now my notebooks are all organized in a list. This does not give a good overview - one has to scroll down + it is an extremely boring layout. The old book form (the little squares) where better in both aspects (going from left to right, it was possible to see many more notebooks on the screen.) My request is to allow users to choose for themselves if they want list or books (just add an icon next to "your list" => sort by => books (instead of only number of notes, etc., names etc.) , and why in addition (later, after this has been solved) do not also work on a version that allow users to add other distinguishing features, depending on their own preferences (shapes, colors,)

  22. I am using evernote for English and German content. My Windows operating system primary language is German. Since Evernote 10 it seems that only the system language is considered for spell checking. Now all English text are marked with the red line. For me it is not an option always to change the system language. Could you please bring back the multi-language spelling check option.

  23. Two features to greatly improve the note writing and organization experience: Header Styles – Standard header styles, such as Title, Sub-title, Header 1, etc. Medium, Google Docs, and Slack Posts all are great examples of this. You should be able to select these header styles using a click of a button. The current workaround is painful: change font size for the header line, then change font size again to start writing in the smaller font. Note Outline – Once you create headers, these headers can then become a note outline that can easily be navigated. Look to Google Docs for a great example of this. This would greatly help my ability to navigate my more lengthy notes. Please see screenshots below. Hope you consider this! It would be awesome!

  25. Hi all, Evernote is brilliant - could not navigate life without it!! A feature that I feel is dearly needed and would be tremendous to have is the ability to create an anchor point in notes. eg if I am working on a lengthy note and constantly referring to other notes at the same time I want the ability to specify a point where I am working in that note so I can go straight back to it. Also, when you open a note it goes straight to the start of the note. You always have to scroll down to the bottom of the note to add to it. Many thanks for any comments.

  26. I totally agree with the previous post : I have been using the Evernote Mac version for the past 4 years, and tabs are an essential part of my workflow, tabs and the possibility to open multiple, fully fledged, Evernote windows. Having them disappear will have a negative impact on how I use Evernote on a daily, if not hourly, basis.

  28. The new version sucks. Evernote began to consume 3-4 times more memory (more than 1 GB with 4 notes open), which is why the application slows down. The old version consumes 200-300 MB for the same number of notes. Even in the worst of times, when everyone called Evernote "the slowed-down elephant," the notebook ran faster. Side panel! Seriously? I see only a few tags on the 13-inch display instead of 20 in the old version. Do you call this "making a spacious design"? The new panel was not created to work with information. Colored tags! They made it possible to work very quickly and productively with notes. Where is the color? Shortcuts! Do you know why they are needed? To always be in front of my eyes and help in my work. Why did you remove them? Why did you add a link to the source under the title? This is unnecessary visual rubbish. Hide it. 2\10 I am disappointed

  30. This sadly doesn't seem to be a new version of Evernote. It is an entirely different product that has access to our Evernote data in the cloud, but bears little resemblance in functionality to the Windows version of Evernote. So many features missing. This is worse than the iOS version, which, after being in the beta for a few weeks, opted out, installed Evernote 8.x from the App Store, then turned off automatic updates. So much is broken. No import folders? No global note shortcut keys? This is unusable to anyone that has used Evernote for over a decade. ☹️

  31. I've participated in the Preview and the Beta programmes for this release. I've noted bugs when I've seen them, responded to the feedback questionnaires and posted observations to the Preview and Beta forums. I'm really surprised to see this release go live when the most recent beta didn't seem nearly ready. It feels as if this release has been rushed rather too rapidly. Perhaps to catch up with the iOS release? It doesn't even feel like a robust Beta, let alone a full release. I appreciate this is a "journey" and improvements can still be made, etc. etc. but shouldn't the app at least... you know... work? I made a list of some of the basic functionality that I was waiting to see fixed. I say "fixed" because these are all things that already existed in the previous release and have not been implemented in 10.0.10. Tabs! - Imagine using a web browser and the developer removed the ability to open more than one tab at a time. My mother only uses one tab in her web browser but I suspect she might be in the minority. This was highlighted early on in the beta programme and seems to have been ignored. Local links - Again, highlighted early on and seemingly ignored. Not only does it seem impossible to create a local link to a note, existing evernote:// links no longer work. Imagine if you were a paying Evernote customer (I am) who'd created a lot of links in other applications (I have)! No need to imagine, I guess. So all the carefully-crafted links are not honoured. Why take this functionality away? Or why send out a product before it has this basic functionality included? </rhetorical> PDF Annotation Summaries - I annotate documents, research papers etc. Previously, annotations were summarised at the top of the note. Really useful stuff! That's no longer available. Not only that, my existing annotation summaries have lost all recognisable formatting. Highlights in the wrong places, text annotations pointing to the wrong text. Web Clipper - I'm not sure what's happened here but the web clipper, which used to be excellent and so much better than any competitors' solutions, is now formatting clipped content in strange and unexpected ways. What was a predictable behaviour is now a lottery. Creating a Table of Contents from multiple notes - No longer an option. Why not? I could go on (and frequently do). There are a host of curious design choices that other beta users have highlighted. I'm not quite so frustrated with those things. I can live with a quirky new way of doing something as long as it works. Why do I need to click twice on a link to open it? Who knows? It's a behaviour I'm not familiar with and seems like a curious design choice but I'm really only bothered that the link opens. TL;DR? Evernote is broken. At least, it doesn't work in a way that will allow me to keep using it without employing a lot of "workarounds". This is true of the iOS release too. (The issue about offline notebooks is well documented in the relevant forum, for example.) Having been with Evernote for 12 years, I was happy to contribute time to the Preview and Beta programmes. I liked Evernote. I encouraged friends to use it. I pestered work colleagues to download it. I don't expect to be making such encouraging noises in the future! I'm sure a huge amount of work has gone into making this new Evernote release. Perhaps this is simply a bumpy start to an exciting journey but it's not one that I'll be joining. I just want Evernote to be what it used to be, a reliable, robust 'second brain'. This release, sadly, is not a step forward.

  32. Thanks for nothing. In one swoop you have completely destroyed my workflow and 7 years worth of an information database. Many moons ago with the idiotic limitation of 250 notebooks I was forced to go the tagging route. That took a whole weekend to re-organise 3000+ notes. BUT once set up it did work well and no longer a limit on a high level entity. Today that's all gone - colour coded tag tiles gone. AND when you go to a tag area and create a new note you are bounced to ALL notes - the new note is not kept with the tag set. OK so I thought I'd look at Notebooks again and moving notes within tag to a Notebook - oh no the data is lost - brilliant how can that possibly happen! This is a complete waste of space - and I am now looking at moving out of Evernote to something else - I just hope that the receiving software can read in Evernote data.

  33. Hi All, You may have noticed that all threads requesting the ability to use text collapse/outlining have been merged into this thread, regardless of platform specificity. This was done in order to better enable us to quantify and qualify user requests, and amplify their voice. While this does not mean this is a feature that will be coming, we certainly want to relay user feedback/sentiment to our various teams. Moving forward, please put all commentary and votes for the ability to use text collapse/outlining here!

  34. Right now it's a multistep-process to manually link two notes with each other. Coping the note link, inserting it in the other on and if necessary copy the link of the other note to link back at the initial note. With nearly 5,000 notes in Evernote it get's more and more important to build networks, otherwise a huge amount of notes never gets looked at. Maybe at the bottom of each note (where the 'context' section is) you could place a little search bar to enter other note (titles) to connect them with each other. This way it would be more easier to jump between related notes and manually add such connections instead of relying on the 'context' feature.

  36. A thing that's been bothering me in this great service ever since I started using it 2 years ago, is that it is not possible to set a sorting order for a specific notebook. To me this seems very basic, so I was very disappointed that it's still not available in the new beta. I mean, am I the only one who wants my receipts ordered by date and my recipes ordered by title? My family photos ordered by date and my art photos ordered by title? I do sincerely hope this can be implemented!! Once again, thanks for the great software.

  37. I use Evernote extensively on my Mac, iPad Pro, and iPhone. We use shared notebooks in my office and I have a ScanSnap Evernote Edition sitting on my desk. (I even have Evernote desk accessories sitting next to the scanner.) I'm pretty well immersed in the world of Evernote. However, I've found myself turning to other tools, most recently OneNote, with greater frequency. The main issue, and it is a big one for me, is the fragmented and inferior support for note taking and PDF editing in Evernote. I use my iPad Pro with Apple Pencil extensively. There are some great Pencil-compatible apps for iOS, including Notability, PDF Expert, and OneNote. Evernote, on the other hand, is stuck with a strange and fragmented approach: PDFs can by opened using the "Annotate" tool in Evernote, which I think is built around the remnants of Skitch. It's fine for adding arrows and icons, but terrible (unusable) for handwritten notes on PDFs. It really can't be used for anything more than simple highlighting -- certainly not detailed annotation or note taking. Drawings and notes can be added to an Evernote Note directly through the handwriting tool, but this simply inserts an image into the note. There's no way to use this tool to take notes over multiple pages, or to use it for annotation as far as I can tell. I've also found it to the buggy, with full pages of notes lost if you switch away from Evernote to another app before saving the image and returning to the normal notes view. I will say that that, though the tool is very limited, with very few options, the Pencil support works well and writing is fluid. This tool seems to have the most potential for future development. Finally, there is Penultimate -- a separate app I want to love but is just too buggy, too limited, and too walled off from the rest of Evernote to be truly useful. Again, no support for importing PDFs/annotation, yet another approach to handwriting, and, though the Penultimate notes live in Evernote, nothing can be done with them in the main app. Why, at this stage, would Evernote have three separate, incompatible and incongruous approaches to annotation/note taking, none of which begin to match the functionality of some of the other apps named? Attached PDFs can certainly be opened in other apps, such as PDF Expert, but there is no way to get the annotated PDFs back into an Evernote note without deleting the original attachment and reattaching the PDF. That's cumbersome, and annotation seems like pretty basic functionality that Evernote should offer. Evernote certainly has some broader advantages over OneNote, but really needs to explore something like the "canvas" style approach used by OneNote. The ability to "print" PDFs to a OneNote page and then markup the document itself and take notes/add text/etc. all on one page is invaluable. I've pretty much switched all note taking/PDF annotation to OneNote, with Evernote still used for project management and other organizational needs, which leaves me with my own fragmentation. Maybe I'm missing something in Evernote's approach, but I'm a longtime user that's completely frustrated with Evernote's inferior support for annotation and handwritten notes.

  39. I have lots of lists using the old checkbox feature and I especially like that the text does not change to strike-through after checking the checkbox. After upgrading to v10.4.4, Evernote for Windows keeps automatically switching my check box lists to checklists and changes all text to strike-through for checked items. This happens anytime I press enter anywhere in any of the items on any line. It is impossible to add a new line anywhere - in the middle, at the end, ANYWHERE, without the list getting switched to a checklist. PLEASE allow us to disable this new "feature". I can understand how some people might like checklists and I may even use them too, but please do not automatically assume that every list I have needs to get switched to a checklist. If I start with a list of check boxes, keep it that way. When I press enter for a new line, I want a check box on the new line, not everything switched to checklist. If I create a checklist, then keep it a checklist - that's fine. Just do not automatically switch everything to checklists.

  40. I gave up trying v.10 and am back to previous v. 6.25.1.9091 (last stable version). I use Evernote for work, not for leisure. The poor design and missing features affect my workflow. I just can't afford it. The whole situation is a true lack of respect. This release is an unfinished project - and a poor one. I'll stick to the older version for now.

  43. I'm a happy Evernote user, but I miss a feature many people have asked for and will greatly appreciate - support for LaTeX formulas. If may sound complicated, but integration should be actually extremely simple. Here's how it could work: 1) Similarly to URL-to-hyperlink conversion, a LaTeX formula could be automatically generated by converting text surrounded by specific characters ($ in LaTeX). For example, I can type "Today we will discuss how equations of the form $ax^2 + bx + c = 0$ can be solved" 2) Finally, the formula text can be converted to an image. Luckily, there are many online services that given the LaTeX source produce a PNG image (even with transparency and custom color by some services). So the only thing the Evernote team needs to implement is to provide the option to automatically and manyally convert a piece of text to an image by querying some well-established online service. So adding LaTeX math support boild down to implementing a simple UI feature! Now it sounds simple, but this could be a selling point to a huge amount of people (especially in academia). I'm not aware of any good note taking tool that has seamless formula integration and synchronization. Even in the current Evernote state the functionality can be emulated by dragging LaTeX formula images to Evernote. However, this is tedious and does not facilitate modifications. Therefore, it would be good after the image has been acquired, the source text to be saved along for future modifications. What do you think, Evernote staff? P.S. I just saw on your blog that you're supporting the use of Evernote in schools, etc. This makes the suggested feature even more prominent.

  44. Hello, I love the code block feature that was added. However, I think it has some down falls. Mostly, I think it is lacking in text formatting. An amazing feature would be for Evernote to recognize some popular coding languages and be able to color code variables and other identifiers. At the very least, I wish the code block kept my formatting when I copied and paste from a text editor. I often copy and paste code from SQL management Studio hoping for the color coding to stay, which it does not. If I copy into a normal section, it is fine but, the code block removes the color formatting. (I have tried pasting with match style, does not work). I think this would make Evernote more robust and be able to reach a larger audience. Mainly, extend reach to developers who would like a place to effectively store their code for reuse. Thank you for taking the time to consider this idea!

  45. Please, please restore the manual sync button. I have had enough sad experiences of changes not syncing properly across my laptop, desktop and mobile phone. Like many users, I switch between devices frequently. Having a sync button that gives users confidence that everything is synced upon starting up or closing down an instance of Evernote is a no-brainer. I'm sure your rationale for removing the button is "our new version is so stable and smart now, we don't need it, just trust us, it'll always work." If so, there's no cost to showing users a *confirmation* that it has worked. Please.

  46. Hi... Tried EN many moons ago, then went with OneNote but EN's cloud and accessible anywhere features are bringing me back...Enough kudos... Is there a way to mark a note as "read-only" so I cannot accidentally erase or modify it? Thanks. Alex

  47. PLEASE bring back custom fonts!! This was one of the many reasons why I love EVERNOTE . I LOVE Evernote but the lack of being able to choose a custom font on the new 10.0 Mac Desktop App is highly disappointing and frustrating!! Only having 6 fonts to choose from is SO archaic!! I can understand this update on the WEB version and even on the IOS versions but NOT on the desktop version!! I am a graphic designer and this is CRITICAL to my business!! One of the reasons I chose Evernote is because I had the freedom to choose my own fonts, colors, styles, formatting, etc. and I was able to import different file formats, audio, scans, handwritten notes, etc. This new update reminds me of an old archaic PC application with the lack of preferences and customizations. Ugh... And PLEASE fix the print margins!! SO much wasted paper if you ever want to print something... Also- we need to be able to export notes in other formats!! I would love to see an export option to .PDF, .TXT, Pages, Numbers, Keynote, .epub, etc. it would make EVERNOTE even more unique and functional. Yes, I can use other programs to convert my notes but having it built in would be AMAZING!! I am all for updates & improving but please don't take away things that make EVERNOTE the Awesome program that it is!!

  48. Evernote forces ALT-S shortcut for screenshot with no option to disable it. Alt-S is S-cedilla char in polish language on every single polish keyboard. Current Evernote 10 is NOT READY FOR POLISH MARKET. How to disable the shortcuts?

  49. REQUEST – It would be amazing to have a feature where an image can be selected, and when you right-click (ie, the same way you rotate it, etc.) there could also be an option to override the "largest smallest-dimension" algorithm and set that image as the note's thumbnail. A little background –– One thing I use EN for very heavily is as an artist database for my job. I really like having both a photo of the artist and an example of their artwork at the top of their card. However, when I'm scrolling through snippet or card view, it would be really helpful to have the image of their artwork always be the one to show up. This usually happens but there are a few times where the photo of the artist is used instead. I've read up on the algorithm that chooses the image with the "largest smallest-dimension" (PS, see what I did there with the hyphen? Way clearer that way.) and I am actually OCD enough to try to amend the file sizes to have the algorithm pick the right one. However, even this doesn't seem to work – it's probably me because I guess an algorithm can't lie, but even when I resize the images, it's still not choosing the right one. So my question is – why would that be happening? Could it be that once EN's algorithm chooses an image, it always chooses that filename even when the size changes? But what would be SO MUCH EASIER is my *request* – could there be an override option to the largest smallest-dimension algorithm (which I agree does work at least half of the time for me) to choose a thumbnail? I'm not talking some fancy thing in the settings where you tell EN how to pick your thumbnails – that sounds like way more work than it's worth. I just imagine, like I've said above, having the image you want to be the thumbnail highlighted/selected, then right click (in the same way that you can rotate an image, etc.) and have something like "set as note thumbnail." Please?? Thank you!
