  1. Howdy everyone, Following up my Is this a farewell ? post a couple months ago, I thought it would be nice to share why after wasting a gigantic amount of time, I am back in EN. Applications I tried to migrate too OneNote Synology Note Station Bear Obsidian Joplin Drafts Notion Also, I would like to outline my use case, so readers understand what I am looking for in the note taking app [Personal] Bills & Bills’ payments [Personal] Family’s documents [Business] Meeting notes [Business] Clients’ information and notes [Business & Personal] Knowledge base [Business & Personal] Saving web articles OneNote I was very close at transitioning to OneNote, but I eventually decided not to because of the difficulty finding staff and the crippled tagging system. What I liked: The iPad app, including its free hand annotating capabilities OneNote notebook databases are stored files Notebook > Sections > Pages give an extra depth of organization Ability to write anything wherever on screen, endless canvas Integrating options What I didn’t like: Migration tool didn’t work Could not find my content OCR not supported in attachments Crippled tagging Microsoft ribbon Sharing only available with a Microsoft account Synology Note Station Really awesome functionalities, being a proper Evernote copycat. It also has a tasks feature, that EN just introduced ! Despite not ending up in it, I am keeping it as a local backup of EN, sadly this includes manually exporting and importing notebooks. What I liked: Self-hosting The ability to create parent/children tags Part of the Synology ecosystem, meaning all my backup strategies apply to my notes too All functionalities I need What I didn’t like Limited shortcuts, very hard to discover Attachments were not inline, but hidden in a popover Tasks could not be viewed in a summary, but again hidden in a popover iPadOS app doesn’t work, it is crashing The app has a lot of annoying glitches 0 integration options Bear What an awesome app. Beautiful, amazing organization -only by tagging- system, full markdown support, amazing exports. Still keeping it as a markdown composer, but not as a note app. What I liked The UI Tagging Archiving Full markdown support Export to html What I didn’t like Deployment; The app is using a sqlite database syncing to iCloud Just a markdown editor after all No OCR to attachments Obsidian, Joplin, Drafts & Notion Won’t make the comparison, because I didn’t use the apps a lot. Mainly, I didn’t like the UI. I am keeping that Drafts app though, because it offers unlimited (no joking) integrating capabilities Why I came back While testing the other options, EN fixed its abysmal performance to a point that it is -almost- functional and introduced the Tasks feature, offering a functionality I need. The most important reason why I came back though is experiencing the hard way that keeping a lot of productivity apps is the biggest productivity killer. EN is far from great, but it is a one app fits most for me. Keeping 1 app ended up being my most important criterion, so came back to EN. Why I am frustrated, again Cannot create 2 filtered notes snippets in dashboard, because I am not paying the highest tier !! Cannot add 2 calendars, because I am not paying the highest tier !! iPad app is still crippled, including a frustrating issue where while being in a client meeting, EN locks my editing capabilities while writing in a note !!!! Only Google support for calendars and documents Tasks is great, how about focusing in other functionalities now that aren’t That’s it, from my experience transitioning is a painful and time consuming process and I strongly recommend analyzing the transition app a lot before moving forward. Most important thing to avoid is keeping multiple productivity apps, ending up in a situation where you don’t know what to use for what, searching where you saved what and struggling to find a way to integrate where most note taking apps are still crippled at that section. It’s sad for EN, because it was the most integrated app a decade ago. Happy note taking !

  2. Hi all, Over the last few months, we’ve introduced a lot of new features and enhancements to Evernote. Now that we’ve stepped up the pace of our app updates, here’s a recap of some of the highlights to make sure you don’t miss out on any recent improvements that you might find helpful: Get the Evernote that’s right for you - We released a new lineup of subscription plans to make it easier for you to get exactly what you need. Whether you want to be more organized, keep your home and family life on track, or be more productive at work, there’s a plan that’s right for you. Easily manage projects and workflows - The new filtered notes widget helps you turn Home into mission control for anything you want to accomplish. It does this by displaying notes based on your chosen criteria alongside related tasks, calendar events, and more—so all the info you need to move your projects forward is front and center. Capture important info, right from Home - Create new entries from your notes, tasks, notebooks, and tags widgets. Click the button in the upper right-hand corner of these widgets to add content, without having to switch your context. Find what you need, faster - Filtered searches help you find your notes based on their attributes, like when you created them or what they contain. Now you can save your filtered searches for future use. Evernote will also suggest filters after you perform a search or add a filter. A smoother note-taking experience - We’ve made enhancements to the editor, so it behaves more intuitively. The editor is now better at recognizing emails and URLs, turning these into clickable links. It’s also better at handling dragging-and-dropping and copying-and-pasting files to and from Evernote. In addition to releasing updates more frequently, we’re constantly discovering more ways Evernote can be useful to you. Check out these blog posts on how Evernote can help college students be more organized and how fantasy football fans can use it to get a competitive edge. This is a quick summary of what’s new. For a more detailed rundown, visit our blog. As always, I’m looking forward to hearing about your experience with the latest improvements. Take care, Shane

  3. Hey y'all... this thread has diverged from complaining about why Evernote doesn't meet our personal needs and into political territory outside of Evernote's control! Can we please just refocus on demanding that Evernote build their apps to meet our particular needs so the product managers don't eventually quit in favour of drafting government policies? 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

  4. @Nygaard EN rolls out a completely recoded app. Now everybody has his pet functions, and cries „They ignore me“ when it does not show up. They probably ignore nobody - they follow the agile software development concept. They released a core app initially, and now add feature by feature with every release. Typically what is today in its design phase will be coded next, then follows QA and then release preparations (which include adaptation of help documents, tutorials etc.). So probably with 10.23 released they have internally already everything up to 10.30 defined and in the making. So just enjoy every release as a miracle package, I am sure there is plenty to come. Eventually your functions will show up as well.

  6. The ctrl-a shortcut for the OS X app is wrong. It should move to the beginning of the line, not select all. CMD-a should select all. Is there a way to fix this? It's not even listed in the shortcuts menu.

  8. Thanks for sharing, with a lot of well observed details that make or break workflows. I want to point out that thought: Before moving in, always check if moving out is an option. Many alternatives look less great after checking and trying their export feature !

  9. Just want to clear this that EN TECH support figured it out got me fixed and stated the bug was fixed in the next release. Things have been pretty smooth since.

  10. That's exactly the reason that I stick with Evernote because my data can be imported by most note taking apps that want to compete with EN. In the worst case, I can even write an importer myself because the ENEX format is very well documented and formally described in an XML scheme. Edit: I don't understand why you removed your FREE Evernote account ? Maybe, you still have an ENEX backup that can be used for the Bear import or to restore your Evernote account?

  11. Got the following response when I submitted a ticket. At least they know there's a problem. Raven B. (Evernote Help and Learning) Oct 21, 2021, 7:58 PDT Hello Eric, Thank you for contacting Evernote Support. I'm Raven, and I'll be looking into your concern. I understand that you're having trouble with clipping your emails with the Evernote Web Clipper. Please know that we are aware of this problem you experience and that our developers are working on a fix; however, we are unable to provide a definite time as to when it will be completed. In the meantime, you may try these workarounds until a permanent fix is implemented: The issue where the "Email" option doesn't show is usually the first time you click on the Web Clipper. A possible workaround is to close the Web Clipper box > and click on it again. You can also save emails to Evernote using your unique Evernote forwarding email address. I apologize for the inconvenience it may have caused, and hoping for your patience and understanding on this matter. Kind regards, Raven B. Customer Support Representative

  12. At this point I would rather have the option to preview documents and image files in EN just like with PDFs, PNGs etc. I guess a calculation table/ calculator could be added as a Home widget short term, for on the go calculations, either by Evernote or a third party. If Evernote finds the time to do a full calculation integration in the text editor at some point, that would also be great, but an image preview allows for so many other uses.

  13. I dream about this feature! I read this topic and see that many guys don't get it. They talk about encryption, hacker protection e. t.c. But we want it not to hide our sensitive information from Putin KGB officers When I talking about sensitive information I mean notebook with my journal and reflection about how ***** company that i work, or notebook in which I collect articles about best ways to please your partner in bed. Or notebooks with gift ideas for girlfriend. There is nothing criminal or illegal in this notebooks. I just don't wanna that on a work meeting when I show marketing proposal somebody bt chance saw this personal notebook, cuz I use Evernote for all my note taking needs. So all I need is ability to setup PIN code on personal Notebook

  14. I still have the line in my config.json file - in my case set to 500. I was just able to select 500 notes without any problem. The 'multiselectionlimit' variable doesn't exist in config.json by default any longer in Windows but adding it still works... "qa": { "multiSelectionLimit": 500 } However, I rarely need to select anything near the default 50 limit so it really isn't a benefit to me to have tweaked the setting. I just tried it as an experiment which interestingly continues to work on Windows (EN v10.23)

  15. +1 from me also. Tried other, always come back to EN. Its worth paying as you get central hub for all your documents, easy search options for them and OCR ( best in class ). Solid iPhone app, web access and desktop app. So yeah, def good purchase. Additionaly I have backup of all of my documents on NAS.

  16. Working for me - GDrive is no comparison, because EN is a complete package, doing a lot more than simply storing a file. I switched to EN some years ago when I went paperless. I have not regretted it since - I often surprise other people by being able to produce exactly the content needed, wherever I am, by a fast search. You get used to have everything you need available. EN is my information platform since. For feeding it I use an ix500 office scanner, a scanning app for my iPhone and the build in scanner of the app, depending on what I need. Scanner and scanning app produce already OCRed content, for example. Other important means to get content where needed are web clipper and forwarding e-mails. What is important for me: I can then annotate the information - this makes it dynamic, enriching the information copied by my own meaning. Different from others I use another app (Things 3) as my GTD hub. I will probably reconsider this when EN introduces recurring reminders - a feature I need for my GTD setup.

  17. Thank you @PinkElephant for the hint. I opened two support request with EN Support, one for the „Create New Note“ and one for „Append to Evernote“. After testing a bit more thoroughly I also realized that both create and append do not handle rich text well: hyperlinks get killed which is totally unacceptable in my use-case. I‘ll keep all of you posted on the responses by EN. KR - C

  18. The new version sucks. Evernote began to consume 3-4 times more memory (more than 1 GB with 4 notes open), which is why the application slows down. The old version consumes 200-300 MB for the same number of notes. Even in the worst of times, when everyone called Evernote "the slowed-down elephant," the notebook ran faster. Side panel! Seriously? I see only a few tags on the 13-inch display instead of 20 in the old version. Do you call this "making a spacious design"? The new panel was not created to work with information. Colored tags! They made it possible to work very quickly and productively with notes. Where is the color? Shortcuts! Do you know why they are needed? To always be in front of my eyes and help in my work. Why did you remove them? Why did you add a link to the source under the title? This is unnecessary visual rubbish. Hide it. 2\10 I am disappointed

  19. Hi, I just went through support (ticket# 3383733) to be confirmed, that Evernote 10 for Android has NO background sync capabilities. Back in the days EN 8.13.3 could be set to a specific sync interval for background syncing so that when you start the app you are good to go with the remote changes already being on your device. In 2021 we have push syncing cloud services. OneNote and Google Keep do real time syncing without even having to start the app. Let's look what missing background syncing means at the moment: - no remote changes on scratchpads are on your mobile when you fire up EN10 on the go (having to wait 20-60 seconds to load then) - no remote set or changed reminders are on your mobile so you are likely to miss your reminders (this happens to me regularly) - no remote changes in your notes contained in offline notebooks are downloaded to your device so you cannot rely on having the latest stuff on the device when being offline later. - when firing up EN for Android I have to wait around 20-60 seconds to have "home"-screen updated completely if EN did not run for some hours on mobile. Support seriously told me, to be sure to have these standards features you have to open the mobile app after every time you did a change on web or desktop. If you collaborate with others you don't know about the changes and are out of luck. I suggest re-adding a background or push sync Android service to EN10 that could ensure this basic syncing stuff by updating the database in the background (as back in EN8.13.3).

  20. My god. i used this app for 10 years in differnet Android phones without problems. With the last actualization all change. All is difficult, the notes needs a lot of time to be loaded and practically the app is not usable when you need ro read a note quickly. i dont undersatnd what happenend but as a client i need to return very quickly to the app that we haved before this. I see in different places a lot of people having the same issues that I have currently.. It is the first time in 10 years that I think in change the note app.

  21. It looks like the actual requirement has not been expressed properly. The real problem is that the list of stacks and notebooks can become cluttered with items that are not used frequently. Most of us would just like to reduce the size of the list without changing any tags or structures. A simple solution would be an option to tick any item in the list so that it is not displayed unless (a) a search reveals a note within the notebook/stack or (b) the option to "reveal all" is selected.

  22. it's difficult to cut out all permission bundling. there is a certain balance to be had between broad permissions, fine-grained permissions or maybe even introducing a domain-specific language to manage permissions. OS developers don't want to add too many permissions because that just slows development and testing down. Customers don't want permissions to be fine-grained until they suddenly do. App developers don't want permissions to ever change because that means existing working software may break. in the classical windows and old mac desktop world every app could do everything with every other app and its data. Unix etc always had the concepts of users and groups and every file has individual permissions, but access to services had to be governed individually by each running service. Linux has had SELinux for 10 years now. This controls who can use what service (i imagine other Unixen and maybe even Windows has something similar), but configuration is a pain. permission lists tend to grow over time. for example, the current list of android permissions can be found here: https://developer.android.com/reference/android/Manifest.permission. Some probably mean very little to the average person (ACCESS_BLOBS_ACROSS_USERS anyone?)

  23. Some files - that I need quick, or on the go, or files for review, or captured files are in EN, the rest are on NAS. Link to files on NAS are added to EN notes and than I just open that file when I need it. All my business documents and private are in EN and NAS.

  24. I found a suitable fix. I opened REGEDIT and went through the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section searching for each of the file suffixes in question .docx - Word.Document.12 .pptx - PowerPoint.Show.12 .xlsx - Excel.Sheet.12 I then edited the default string value to give the entry in the second column above. Actually this is already a little hazy so take things slowly to be sure. I think I initially searched the registry for Evernote.Office and this located each of the file types I was concerned about. Changing the value as shown fixed the New context menu entry. The following website was my starting point although it didn't ultimately quite provide the answer I needed. The presence of the Evernote.Office default string value was the give away for me. https://www.thewindowsclub.com/remove-items-from-new-context-menu

  25. Export from OneNote (does not work with all ON versions !): https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/export-and-import-onenote-notebooks-a4b60da5-8f33-464e-b1ba-b95ce540f309 Import into EN: https://help.evernote.com/hc/en-us/articles/208314308 However, as @gazumped told the structure of OneNote is different to EN. To find the best approach you should probably start with a small volume of data, see what works best, and only then start to move larger volumes.

  26. Just a practical advise: Once you delete a tag altogether, all notes that were carrying it will loose it. You may have a hard time to identify these notes later. Say you have 3 tags with a similar meaning, and now want to join them under 1 of the tags. When you delete first, the notes are not showing any more. So sometimes it is a good idea to apply a temporary tag first, and then start changing things. If all temporary tags start with the same string, you can easily find them later, and remove them after the housekeeping job is done.

Suggested filters display at top of note list after searching. Added more options for handling hyperlinks in tasks. Tasks are now sortable by due date in the Tasks view. Bug fixes Fixed an issue with Chinese and Japanese words disappearing Fixed an issue where scans would sometimes not appear in the note

  31. AFAIK the only way would be to open a second account and move everything there you want to get out of sight. You could start it as Free, then subscribe for a month, move the content (monthly 10GB on Personal / 20 GB on Professional should be enough for a lot of content) and fall back to Free again. We have a long running request somewhere in the forum to be able to designate notebooks as „Archive“, excluding them from regular searches. You can search it and add your vote.

  32. I think you can assume that any suggested feature is on list somewhere, and will be referred to whenever the company is doing maintenance or considering updates in that area. Bear in mind that Evernote get thousands of feature requests, running from "I don't like the shade of green you use" to "why not add outlining and mind maps as optional layouts". Every suggestion has to go through a process of Is this even possible? (Bearing in mind multiple devices / screen sizes / OS's) How much will it cost? Of our 200M+ users, from students to astronauts - how many would actively use this? What will it cost in speed / bandwidth terms? - and even if it meets all these tests (and probably dozens more) a "minor" improvement may mean substantially rewriting a big chunk of code to add the extra links for the new bit to fit in. That might get put off until that particular code needs an annual review anyway - due in a couple of years - to get planned in to any other work that comes up in the meantime. So even if someone said "We'll look into this" - it may not happen for years, and if a different bit of development takes priority, or user needs change, maybe not even then. But for ever after: cue endless reminders of "when is this coming?" ... "You said you'd consider it..." I'm with @PinkElephant - I'd rather they just hide in their bunker and get on with whatever they're doing. If the app fits my needs, I'll continue using it. If there are glitches, I'll find work-arounds; and if it becomes unusable - I'm outta here. No dramatic flounces, no impassioned statements - just a faint smell of brimstone and a drifting tumbleweed...

  33. I wanted to ask, if it is possible to STOP closing a note by horizontal swipe, because you CANNOT work with tables inside a note or just scroll down normally, because the horizontal swipe is very sensitive and every time you swipe horizontally inside the note, table, etc. or scrolling down, the note gets closed by this horizontal swipe and it is really annoying when the note is closed every time, but you don't want it... So, I hope you can turn this horizontal swipe feature on and off, so that you can only exit the note by clicking on the back icon in the top left corner (for users who want it turned off like me). Thanks 😊 (A support ticket I submitted recently, I hope more people will take notice of this annoying "problem".... (I already found a few people who find it annoying too). It would actually be fixed quickly by a few lines of code...)

  34. Yes, there is a problem - it was already mentioned in other threads. It does not only happen to web clips, it was mentioned it happens to emails in HTML format as well. It seems something is broken with the HTML interpretation on iOS. Currently no fix, waiting for a future release. You could issue a support ticket.

  35. Who knows the big plan of life ? Me as another user not … Personally I don’t know the problem, my pictures from the phone are always available on my Mac, via iCloud sync. Apple does it perfectly smooth & fast. There are other services, both cloud based and local, that can do a similar job (not as smooth).

  37. There's a lot of automation stuff around - see my list earlier. I haven't had chance to start to look at individual apps yet, but if anyone has some suggestions or can rule anything out, I'm definitely in the market too. I have a lot emails going direct to my account, plus random clips and an ongoing tidy-up that kind've rely on notes being tagged, retitled and redirected to the correct notebook as necessary. Filterize is a fundamental part of my workflow! As Filterize are shutting down, maybe we could persuade Evernote that it's a useful service to buy into...

  38. I updated Evernote to 10.22.3 today and noticed the same phenomenon. Since this update, while Evernote is open, I see in Windows Task Manager that Evernote is constantly using my hard disk. As soon as I close Evernote, my hard disk activity drops back to its normal level as before this update. Have other people using Evernote 10.22.3 on Windows noticed this phenomenon ?

  39. The Home dashboard on the iPad uses the mobile layout. All widgets are placed one under the other. This wastes a lot of screen space, because no widgets can be placed side by side. Idea: Use a layout similar to the desktop dashboard for the iPad. Widgets can be selected to be narrow, medium or wide. In the basic grid, one wide, or one medium and one narrow, or three narrow ones can be placed side by side.

  40. I just discovered Evernote Legacy and it makes me so happy to have the old one back! I was dreading my evernote and looking at alternatives but the Legacy feels like such a breeze to be able to use again! Evernote, please just go back to Legacy (with bugfixes!) I need a local app at full speed, not this slow electron *****. I don't want the weird redesign and bulkiness. Evernote, if you want to grow your market or compete with Notion, etc, consider making spin off apps instead of messing with your core product!

  42. I use Evernote daily & haven't encountered this problem before, but while typing additional details into a note, it suddenly started overwriting previous text. So now I can only type new text. I cannot go back and add to what's already there or correct a typo. It is not the "Insert" key doing this. As you click a letter to place the cursor there, it no longer blinks, it highlights the letter. Normally, if this happened by accident, simply hitting the left or right arrow keys would resolve this and you can type away. But this now only highlights the next or previous letter. This is extremely frustrating as well as time consuming & I don't know how to make it stop doing this. Did I accidentally turn this feature on or is this a glitch?

  44. + 1 This feature-gap is even more annoying with the new / 10.# EN web version: If You delete the image which is automatically chosen and shown in the note's thumbnail/snippet view or even delete all pictures in the note and add a new proper one the new picture won't show up in the note's thumbnail/snippet view of the EN web version. Instead of this the unwanted old thumbnail sticks with my note in the thumbnail/snippet view ...

  47. I guess people don't understand that a computer is not just a computer, but also an entertainment center. Here's an example scenario. Lets say I use evernote kind of like a diary and write the most vile things in order to get if off my chest. Very small amount of entries. The rest are notes and ideas for projects. So I'm dating a new person who is nosey (pretty much everyone on Earth) and I go take a shower while my new girlfriend is watching netflix on my desktop. Guess what? Evenote is closed, but she opens it and starts to read my latest entry about something messed up. Thanks evernote. Now I will have to spend the rest of the night explaining what I wrote and why it's none of her business. Now here comes a handful of hypocrites telling me what I should do because that is what the internet offers. Advice from strangers and getting nowhere. Just add a passcode to the desktop Evernote and shut the front door. Or have an option to make Evernote log out automatically and bring up a window to log in again. How hard is that?

  49. I love the new templates feature—I've been looking forward to it for a while! When creating a new note from a template, metadata is not retained. Specifically, tags saved onto the template are not added to the new note. This seems like an oversight to me, since templated notes are likely to have many tags in common.
