  1. Feature Request: Add Outlining Capabilities to Evernote Evernote is great, but it's dying for the ability to create Notes that contain Outlines which are easily collapsed and expanded during creation and in use. One way to implement it would be a switchable editing mode, between standard formatting or outline mode. In outline mode, pressing the Enter key creates a new outline item, and pressing the Tab key changes the current item into a sub-item. Clicking on an item's action icon causes its sub-items to collapse out of, or expand into view. That's the way the Ecco Pro PIM did it, and something simple like that would be a good start for Evernote. The name Evernote implies a product that takes notes -and collapsible/expandable outlines are a huge part of note taking.

  3. Hello everyone, I decided to spare the time to write this disappointment post. Let me note right here that the disappointments you will read in this post is just a small -but most recent- fraction of my 10 years awesome user experience with EN. I have been using Evernote for the past 10 years, maybe half of which are premium. Documents, thoughts, tutorials, web archives, book suggestions, recipes, code, everything I care about is on Evernote and I am still using and love Evernote Moleskine notebooks. Early this year and thanks to COVID (spare) time, I took the time to transition all my data from the cloud to my Synology NAS, firstly because I ended up paying >500$/year (excluding business) to cloud subscriptions but most importantly because I wanted to own my personal data and not pay rent for it. After a streak of subcription cancelling, I cancelled almost all -I am still left with Evernote and iCloud-. I will be cancelling iCloud too when I 've built the Photo workflow I want to. And.. last one standing: Evernote. After giving it a thought and despite the fact that Synology and OneNote both offer a seamless way to migrate notes from Evernote, I said "no". I will be keeping my Evernote subscription, despite the fact that my subscription cost almost doubled in my paid plan years. Why ? Because I got high value from Evernote and it was acceptable to have my data on the cloud but get instantaneous search, famous Evernote OCR etc. And then... v10 came along. Being a developer myself, I don't get judgemental on product changes. When my clients are going back and forth with features they themselves requested, how easy would it be to offer features that 225M users will love or at least find acceptable ? However, performance/productivity aspects are must-haves and there is no point keeping a productivity app that kills your productivity, and that brought me to: shall I cut the last man standing ? Before doing that, I thought let's share some of those reasons, maybe someone will pay attention: New version Performance/Productivity/Reduced Functionality issues. The new app is by far the worst transition I had in my 10 years using EN. It feels (and probably is) a rubbish web hybrid that builds to macOS app too. Don't get me wrong, the UI is great/clean, note composing tools are better than ever, but guys/ladies, creating a note, moving batch/1 note to another notebook are the essentials. Who cares about functionality #3475 when you don't deliver functionalities #1 and #2. Here are 6 reasons why it sucks + 1 inconvenience: When dragging document to Evernote icon, user needs to click on a notebook, wait up to 10 seconds so the import occurs When moving a note to another notebook, it may take up to 30 seconds to be able to select the desired notebook. There is a lock icon and notebooks are greyed out for up to 30 seconds ffs. See screenshot here. When in need to do a batch action for a lot of notes, maximum number of notes is 50 ! (Seriously, is this a joke ?). That's also why I believe the new version is a web hybrid built. Launching the new app in every client (macOS, iOS, web) takes up to 1 minute, when data is not in cache Both macOS, iOS apps "hung". They are stuck and either need up to 30 seconds to revive or they need to be quit. Truth be told, newest updates have limited this issue to a minimum, but yet existing occasions. Linking notes inside the app ! That functionality existed, can't say I was really happy, but at least it worked. Now if you link one note to another, it creates a link that only launches on web ! When searching, ⌘ A selects all notes (all=50 as explained in 1.3) instead of search text Cost commitment. That's why I cancelled Dropbox, they took me from 69 to 129 in 1 year. If not mistaken, I believe Evernote went from 39 to 59, which I find somewhat acceptable considering I am literally paying to accommodate the free user tier. The Moleskine partnership is really cool I have to say and I 'd love to see an update on that Palaeolithic API. EN's API is literally last decade. I attempted to use EN API, but the process is only intended for external vendors that need to integrate a product to EN. The documentation is so outdated and non-existing, that really makes me wonder how safe my data is on EN. Documentation does not include the plain simple cURL commands. Innovation Stopped. It seems like there is no innovation happening, especially after Phil took off. I get it, there is no way competing to notes.app when Apple is really investing in that, but I expect to see some new features in my note-taking app of choice. There is limited app updating (Scannable, Skitch, Penultimate) going on. Features and business strategies I would like to see in the future Performance/Productivity/Reduced functionality -> See issues above. After having composed this post, I tend to realise that all those issues might be related to my assumption that EN now uses a web hybrid. If my assumption is correct, we need native apps. Batch actions -> See 1.3. Why on earth would a functionality of that importance be removed ? I know, hybrid app, right ? Stable Pricing -> Either keep it same and offer more or reduce it and keep it as is. At the moment we are paying more and probably even more in the future for same functionality with performance decrease ! Where does this elevation stop ? Maybe reduce functionality for free users and offer paid ones the value/innovation their cost deserves ? Tagging AI -> Tag suggestions based on user use. For example, every month I import in EN a tax document and payment. How hard would that be to identify pdf pattern and recognise that there are 1000 similar notes with the same tags. Breath-taking iPad app -> Penultimate was great back when it was introduced, but nowadays seem somewhat outdated. iPadOS has brought numerous features on note-taking and there are apps on the App Store that do use those innovations. We need the Evernote iPad app to be as good as it deserves to be. Automations -> Not getting up to date with the environment has its cost: the environment will not update too. Automating note imports in EN should be part of the EN app, just like the EN email. I am not talking about Zapier stuff, but plain-simple automations. At least create a AppleScript dictionary we can use Tasks Management -> We got reminders that -tough truth- never reached an acceptable state of productive use. I literally remember 3 years ago, I needed to manually go to notes 1-1 and clear reminders to remove the clutter. Alright, that's 2 free hours from me to you @EverNote, a price I am happy to pay considering the productivity gain I had all those years. So, are you going to keep me productive or is this a farewell ? Best regards, Askaridis Stathis

  4. Hello! Today we released Evernote for Windows 10.18. This is primarily a bugfix release. It is available now via the Windows Store and as a direct download version from our website. If you are already running one of these versions, we are progressively rolling out to compatible devices and the new version will be available on all supported operating systems within 7 days. To learn how Evernote delivers app updates, when you’re eligible for an update, and how to update your Evernote app, visit How Evernote delivers app updates to our customers. New to Windows 10.18 Tasks you create using the global create button (the green circle with the +) will now be added to the note you currently have open instead of the default task note. Fixed highlights: Now you can see a count of how many tasks you've completed out of the total number of tasks in a note. Occasionally, a task would mysteriously disappear from inside a note. This should now be resolved. Some PDF exports of clipped images would not include the image. If you hovered over an item in a scrollable menu, the list would suddenly (and annoyingly) jump back to the top. When attaching files to a note in Evernote sometimes the file extension would be removed. Let us know what you think and we appreciate the continued feedback. We will keep hard at work! Thank you!

  5. We're currently looking into how to better manage completed tasks. That might include an option to archive completed tasks (maybe after X days). We're also looking into options to bulk select/delete.

  6. I have been using Evernote - as a paid user - for just about 10 years at this point, and I am truly on the verge of leaving the platform entirely. I started a new job about two months ago, and brought Evernote with me as always. Due to the security requirements of my new role, I'm forced to use a Windows 10 laptop instead of my trusty Mac's. The laptop is new - a brand new HP zBook with 16 gigs of RAM, an i7, and 512gb SSD. I don't do a ton with it simultaneously - I'm a senior leader, so my time is spent on video calls, writing documents, presentations, and spreadsheets, doing email and taking notes. But Evernote... Evernote 10 is absolutely horrific on this machine. Evernote eats up RAM and CPU like Cookie Monster on a bender. It's come to the point where I now have to use my iPad to take notes during meetings or while working on projects because the application just shreds my resources and slows down my Windows machine. I've reinstalled twice in the last month to no avail. I don't wish to downgrade, either - the improved Dashboard is very convenient. To the heads of Evernote's Product and Engineering teams, from one head of Product to my peers at Evernote, please focus more on resource optimization and less on your new features. If you're asking me to pay you more RMR, make it worth my while. Fix this awful experience - and quickly. Thank you.

  7. I've been using the legacy version but decided to try v10 again for a week to see if it had improved. I think it has improved, but there are many issues that prevent me from adopting it. Slow performance - v10 takes at around 7 seconds to start up and fully populate on my laptop (which has decent specs). v6.25 reliably takes under 3 seconds. While not a showstopper, it is annoying especially when EN doesn't start with WIndows Slow performance - v10 sometimes lags as I type, v6.25 always allowed for full speed typing (I'm a very fast typer). This doesn't happen all the time but on longer entries I definitely notice a slight occasional "stutter" which creates a feeling that the editor is fighting me as I type. Not an enjoyable user experience. Strange issues with fundamental features - v10 sometimes loses keyboard focus as I'm typing. This seems to happen on longer entries when I'm near the bottom. I have to click the edit area to keep typing. Maybe this is some local issue but I never noticed this with v6.25. Combined with the laggyness it makes me want to avoid typing in EN. Global hotkey Ctrl-Alt-V works in v10 (yay!) but provides no feedback that it worked. v6.25 would pop-up an alert which I could then click and go to the new note, set its title, clarify the content, etc. In v10 I have to then open the EN client, locate the new note, etc. Much less efficient for my workflow. v10 EN does not start up when Windows starts. This does not play well with the previous point about the global paste hotkey since now when I hit Ctrl-Alt-V I have no idea if it worked since I may have forgot to start EN. I just want that paste to be there as an automatic part of working with my computer. v10 EN search is, at least for me, far inferior to v6.25 for getting the results you need quickly. Under v6.25, search results would update in real time as I typed. I could then keep an eye on these results and stop typing as soon as I saw what I needed. Under v10, you have to type in your full search first then hit enter and wait for the results to show. If you decide you need more search terms, you have to click on the search box again, and add additional terms. I makes me want to avoid search in v10 since it feels like search is fighting me. I still hate having no sync status. Other cloud services like Dropbox and OneNote show what's happening. This helps for example if I do a lot of work and want to wait for sync to complete before shutting down. With dropbox I can just wait for the green light and then shut down. With Evernote I have to just wait longer than I would have to to ensure that (hopefully!) it did its work. Seriously, bring back some indicator of sync state. When changing the notebook that a note belongs to, the list no longer shows my most used notebooks at the top. So now I have to search, every time, for the notebook I want in order to move the note to that notebook. Slows down my workflow a lot. Many other issues but I think the above are the most salient for me. I'm going back to v6.25. My conundrum now is whether to continue my subscription or not. I don't feel 100% comfortable supporting Evernote in this new direction with my subscription dollars, but the free option is too restricted to be a viable alternative. Even in this inferior state I think Evernote is the best product for my workflow - I've tried Keep, Joplin, Notion and they don't come close - as good as they are in their various domains. OneNote is a definite possibility, but even that would require a lot of workflow changes and the hassle of migrating everything over. Decisions decisions. Kevin

  9. Thank you, gazumped and PE. After being pointed in the right direction, I succeeded in submitting a ticket and being assigned a number, and am awaiting a response. I can only ascribe my oversight of that option to a lack of sleep after hours of struggling with navigation through all the information. I've been trying to learn about using a computer for a little while now, but still have a lot of trouble following directions. I am grateful for your patience with me.

  10. The resulting search from the Switch To command in v10 is WAY less useful than it is in Legacy. I can't count on it to find what I'm looking for. I think part of it is that it doesn't appear to prioritize notebook names like it does in Legacy. And, even when I have an exact match on the title of a note, it doesn't always find it. 2 specific examples/results presented below. Example 1: Switch to search for "Whole30" (my goal...I want to switch to/navigate to the notebook I created with that title) v10 Result (not notebook option...can't even search for a notebook...only notes...yet it clearly knows that I have a Whole30 notebook as many of those notes live it in) Legacy Results: Perfect Example 2: Want to Switch to a note that has an exact title match v10 Result: I have to perform a search to navigate to it (the note does result in the list even though it isn't at the top of the list as I would expect it to be with an exact match) Legacy Result: Perfect

  11. I'm an Android user. When I started using the Evernote about 3 years ago I gave a very good review in Google Play with a star rating of 4 out of 5. However, the other day I had to update my review to represent the current state of affairs with the new Android app. I reduced the stars to 2 and updated my written review as to why. Namely, it's slow. Painfully so. I'm running the app on a Huawei P20 Pro so hardly a low spec device. At the least it was able to smoothly run the older app. I'm not the only one. If anyone at Evernote looks at the Google Play store reviews they'll see that there's widespread dissatisfaction with the performance of the updated app. Most of us don't really care about getting new features when it takes up to 6-7 secs to open a note that only has text in it. In the old app it didn't take near this long. This is clearly unacceptable especially when it was promised the new app would be better. Is there a timeline as to when these general performance issues will be resolved? I do want to add that I also use the Mac app and it's running great. There have been some minor issues but overall I'm happy with how it is performing. But the Android app is a key component in my work and everyday flow so it'd be good if these performances issues can be resolved.

  12. This file format isn't read by Otter.ai which I use for all transcriptions. Makes the Evernote audio feature irrelevant to me. I agree wholeheartedly that the file format should be something that is considered a common audio format.

  14. We're getting well off-topic here, but just to end this mini-saga... My database backup is about 30GB all told. Evernote gets a daily run with a 7-day history, so 210GB total - and I get a weekly system backup including those folders to a different external drive so (in theory) I have a continuing daily history going back for 3 months or so. In honesty I doubt I'd find a backup more than a week or so old... but it makes me happy that I have the possibility! Plus it's all automatic - it would be more hassle to stop doing this and set up a different system.

  16. I was recently updated to version 10. I have been having large performance issues ever since. I have been an Evernote user for over a decade, since the early days of the service. Over that time I have accrued a large number of notes over several notebooks. I use Evernote on a daily basis for everything from GTD, archiving, technical notes, planning, journaling, and a whole host of other content-heavy applications. The offline client has served me very well during that time. When I quickly (!) needed an answer to a question I could pop open Evernote and find what I was looking for almost immediately. The new v10 client spins for up to a minute or more on many of my notes, regardless of whether I opened the same note just a few minutes earlier. I have a few rather large notes that have yet to respond at all, just spinning for multiple minutes until I get frustrated and close the application. This is making Evernote unusable for me. If the client cannot provide me access to my notes quickly then it ceases to provide a useful function. Waiting for minutes to access reference material that should (and was!) stored locally is a non-starter. When I open my notebooks or search, I need the material to be returned quickly. Otherwise, I have to mentally put down what I was working on when I needed the reference note in order to wait or debug the problem with the EN client. I have found myself copying and pasting my most referenced notes into other applications just so that I can access the information quickly. Having to maintain "quick reference note" copies in another application invalidates the whole purpose of having Evernote in the first place. Please restore offline caching functionality. The notes need to load near instantly and without UI-blocking spinners. Otherwise, the whole point of a handy nearby notebook is lost. Client version: 10.17.6-win-ddl-public (2775) Editor: v126.2.16348 Service: v1.37.8

  17. THere is no sync button in version 10 of Evernote. Sync is automatic. When you first upgrade there will be a delay while your notes sync from the serves. My recollection is that it was a few minutes. If you still cannot see any notes then you might have a look in the web browser version and check that your notes are still displaying there. One of the relatively common causes for Evernote appearing to be empty is that users log in with the wrong account so that is worth checking. If all else fails you can uninstall Evernote 10 and reinstall. Log out of your account and choose not to keep your data. Then uninstall and reinstall. If that doesn't work then open a support ticket.

  19. At some point a year or so ago, both Windows and iOS versions of the Checkboxes changed, so that by default, when you check the checkbox, it adds a strikethrough through the entire item. I truly hate that and wish it didn't do that. Think about a grocery list, which I've been using in Evernote for years. I want to check the items that I want to buy, and then when I've picked it up off the shelf, I uncheck it. Then I can scroll through my whole list and see what I still have to get. When they are on my list they are struck through which makes it much harder to read and is the opposite of my purpose. I also make tons of checkboxed lists of To Do items, and when they are done, I just want to check them, and not have them be crossed off. The easiest way to do this is to create the list, highlight them, and then click on Checklist on the toolbar. Or I would like to create one, press ENTER and have the next unchecked item started on the next row. I just want these to be checkboxes and not Evernote's "checklist." I also absolutely HATE when I have a grocery list that is formatted as checkboxes, not checklists, and I want to insert a new item, press ENTER, and it converts my whole list from checkboxes to Evernote's checklist. If I don't catch it right away it takes minutes later on to repair my document which is awful. I know about typing " []" to create a checkbox that is not a checklist, but again pressing ENTER messes it up. Just as it seems so many people say on these forums, can it go back to the way it was years ago before they were checklists? Probably not, so can you add an additional, perhaps optional toolbar option for checkbox? Or make a user preference for "checked checklist items strike through" that I can turn off. Thanks. Also I don't want to use the upcoming Task functionality as it also strikes through.

  20. Thanks for the update. Until I start seeing more positive reviews I'm not even going to try the new version - my 4-year old laptop isn't exactly top spec, so I don't know whether it would handle the new version to its full potential anyway. My continuing view - I have enough problems without borrowing more...

  21. I have just returned to Evernote as a task management system, and while I was excited at first, the lack of ability to tag tasks is making it less than useful. I literally have dozens or more tasks - things I want to track. I tried to make these each a note, and then link them into projects through tags and saved searches, but I found that cumbersome. Flag/no flag is not enough. Let me create my own priority system through tags and I'll be a happy camper.
    2 points
  22. I assume from the results screen that you did this by filtering for the tag - eg by using the filter menu or by clicking the tag in the sidebar. I think filtering is done locally so as @gazumpedsays there will be a time lag until all the notes are downloaded. If you search for the tag. ie type tag:Health into the search bar this will search on the server and should give you the same results as the web version.

  24. Good question. I decided to try it for just one professional project, the reason being the complaints of my co-workers who were staring at the spinning wheel in Evernote way too long. So I did not make the complete switch yet (I have +38 400 notes) and I would advise to go slowly. But it is very close to Evernote in features (with some added bonus). For the time being, I think Evernote Legacy is still unbeatable. And I think Evernote in Android is not that bad. But Nimbus... you know... it just works well. You try a feature and... ta-dam... it works.

  25. I don't really know if this helps but I've taken many of my non-essential notes and moved them into Gdrive. For example, I had notes in which 5-10 years of pdf files on various statements were all concatenated together. I used Acrobat to combine them all and moved them into Gdrive. I do the same for all my bills, scanned books, spreadsheets and other non-essential files. Since many of my notes were just depositories for files this helped to slim things down somewhat. I also had thousands of notes that were faxes from Hellofax that were being uploaded automatically to Evernote. Anything like that I sweep into Gdrive on an ongoing basis. Obviously this doesn't help much with normal notes. I don't know if any of this has actually helped with anything because I too experience a lot of lag but I'm still quite happy with Legacy.

  26. And I've not heard of Personal subscription comes with 'ads'... I'm personally, pun intended, not that disappointed with not upgraded to Professional tier, because I was not using anything but multi-device sync. What's annoying is that pesky 'upgrade to Professional' ads. I'm not interested in throwing more money on this disrespectful, dysfunctioning, and outdated company. I just want to keep my creations safe and stable, as all things should be, since 2014. Please Evernote. I'm paying you money. Why I have to see upselling ads? Paid apps should be ads-free, I guess.

  27. To clarify this a little, now that I've been through the upgrade process, for me to move from Premium (paying the legacy price via Google Play with several months left until renewal date) to Personal (paying annually direct to Evernote) I did the following: Contacted Evernote support via chat and explained that I want to move to Personal but had several months left on my subscription via Google Play They told me that if I cancelled the Google Play subscription then I could sign up direct with Evernote and they (Evernote) would refund the unused months of my Google Play payment. They passed my details on to their support team. Support team contacted me and we agreed to go ahead. They cancelled the Google Play subscription for me - I got an email from Google saying that the subscription would be cancelled on my renewal date and no refunds would be given. Evernote support sent me a link to sign up for Personal directly with them, paying annually. Once I had signed up, Evernote then refunded me the amount corresponding to the months I had left on my Google Play subscription. All in all, I think it went pretty smoothly and Evernote support were responsive and helpful. Hope this is useful for someone else.

In addition to what Mike P said -- if your browser is set to clear cache/cookies upon exit (not uncommon, I always do that for security purposes) then it won't matter if the "remember me" box is ticked or now. 34. Sounds like a support ticket is the way to go. Many others are successfully accessing task in v10.18.3 - works here just fine. I don't wish to suggest you haven't thought this through but the good old fashioned re-boot the PC could be a solution and if not, then uninstall and completely remove all data directories then reinstall and allow EN to rebuild your data is likely to be successful. (To ensure you clean out the old installation use a program like REVO Uninstaller or just be sure that the %AppData%\Evernote and %LocalAppData%\Programs\Evernote directories are deleted after the uninstall process is complete).

  35. since last update on both ipad pro and iphone, the sidebar and full note list scrolling is bugged. Sometimes the cursor goes back to thr first, other times keeps scrolling in an erratic way, going up and down the list, while recaching previews; others simply visibly lags. Anyways, using the app has become a pain. and there’s not a support mail nor ticket for a paid product?

  37. Good if DS Note serves your use cases. Just for everybody who asks himself what this DS Note means: It is the Note tool integrated into the Synology NAS operating system. On the Synology it is called Note Station, DS Note are the clients. Which means: You need a Synology NAS to run it, you need to manage that NAS, and if you need access from outside of your home network, you have to make the content available on the internet without corrupting your home network security at the same time. The software itself is free, but you need to get the NAS, which will cost a triple digit amount in $/€/£, plus the hard drives. It does not compare to EN, especially the OCR and search capabilities must be build around it using other apps for the Synology. And even then is is pretty short of functions beyond the basics. Why can I tell ? I run 2 Synologies and have tested Note Station. I am still here ...

  45. I raised a ticket with support and they've emailed me to confirm that they have replicated it in their tests too. They are actively working on a fix for it, but don't have an ETA for its release.

  46. Come on man. Stop with this Evernote defending and Android "bashing". V10 simply deserves bad reviews on Play Store because of all the basic issues with the app on popular Android phones. The problem is Evernote and their slow android development. V8 works on more Android devices (below A10) and it works better, so this is no excuse. V8 works fine, the v10 doesn't, because clearly they need more time for v10. The problem is, that this "more time" is taking too long.

  47. I am in SW architecture. I can understand what happened. The Evernote Team wanted to line everything up from a clean and uniform new base, same for all platform etc... But no one considered the performance aspect, for legacy users being with more than 1,000 notes (not mentionning those > 10,000...). No one at Evernote considered that acceptable latency thresholds would be 2x or 3x crossed. No one at Evernote considered that the SW would become ultimately unusable. The issue is that there is generally no way back beyond this point, since the performance issue is intimately tight to architecture choices that were made. Unfortunately I don't expect miracles here.

  48. Please! I've been wanting Tabs back for awhile. I'm using the Legacy version until Tabs come back. Thank you

  49. Or better yet have evernot remember where you are in between editing notes, so you go back to where you were even if it's in the middle of a note.
