Road_Trip 0 Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 To all, Perhaps someone can comment beyond the Evernote tutorials. If I export all notes to the Evernote file format, what objects get backed up? I'm hoping that it's a complete set of notebooks, tags, reminders, attachments etc - anything and everything that could possibly be in Evernote. Otherwise, it's not a backup if it cant be used to completely rebuild the account. This is needed in the event of a catastrophic loss, most often created by one's own actions such as the select all opps-ie delete :-) Really liking Evernote and its quickly becoming indispensable; now it's time to protect it's data. Thanks again.
Level 5* gazumped 12,236 Posted July 6, 2016 Level 5* Posted July 6, 2016 Exporting notes to ENEX does NOT preserve anything other than the notes themselves and (if you request the option) their tags. Notebooks are not covered. There are a variety of add-ins like Backupery which will add options and automation if you need them...

The Note Tag and Reminder information is included It looks very complete to me with the exception of - the note's notebook information is not included Some users do separate exports for each notebook - the note's internal id is not included If you import the note; it becomes a brand new note (this invalidates existing note links) >>Otherwise, it's not a backup if it cant be used to completely rebuild the account. The master information for your account is sitting on the Evernote servers You can not rebuild the account The best you can do is to recreate the notes i.e. import the notes from your export file
Level 5* jefito 5,598 Posted July 7, 2016 Level 5* Posted July 7, 2016 Didn't know about Backupery; thanks, gaz If you don't use internal note links, then you can export individual notebooks. I once wrote a Windows PowerShell script that uses the Evernote ENScript application to export individual notebooks to .enex format files, so you can preserve notebooks that way (search for PowerShell in the forums and you should find it). Stacks are also not preserved, from what I remember., I've long since forgotten any other details of what's not included in .enex files; I'd consider these to be a second-choice fallback for not losing your data; it's certainly not perfect.
Ex Employees Austin G 527 Posted July 12, 2016 Ex Employees Posted July 12, 2016 FWIW, while viewing the Evernote login screen, you can select CTRL+SHIFT+E to view a list of all accounts the client has accessed. Select a username, and Evernote will save a folder to your desktop that contains a separate .enex for each notebook. Each .enex file's title will match the respective notebook. This link from Code 42 is also a great resource.
