Third and final problem today, and now I am REALLY pissed off!

Recommended Posts

You want to explain to me why, when I check my startup programs in Windows Task Manager, I see the Evernote Clipper WHICH I DID NOT INSTALL!!?

At this point it is clear that Evernote is disseminating malware. I am tagging your software with McAfee as a trojan.  I don't know where you got the idea that it's cool to sneak software onto people's computers, but it's not, and I'm done with you as a result. I've had nothing but problems from Evernote's junkware today, and I'm sick of wasting time and then discovering things on MY COMPUTER that I did not put there.

I strongly recommend everyone in this forum to check their Win10/Win8 startup programs. See anything there you didn't install?

I bet it came from Evernote.

Feel your frustration of stuff getting loaded without consent.  However, clipper isn't malware, it facilitates clipping content to EN.

Anything that is installed on my computer without my express consent is malware. At NO POINT did I give permission for Evernote to install the Clipper. In fact, I've made it abundantly clear that I think it's stupid software and I have no intention of using it or installing it. The fact that I then find it, in my STARTUP PROGRAMS, where it consumes system resources, no less, means it is malware.

Any company that disseminates software in such a manner is not trustworthy and is unworthy of my funds. Evernote has been reported to McAfee for this act.

Good job in identifying Evernote components you don't use and disabling them.
No sense in using up resources for features you don't need.
Credit to Evernote for separating these functions out.

You are incorrect in your definition of malware and trojan, and I'm sure McAfee will ignore your tantrum.

You seem to be very unhappy with the Evernote software, going back years.  I'm amazed that you continue to use this product and pollute these forums with your rantings.

I use this product because I paid for it and invested 250,000 words into it.

Evernote gets NO credit for installing software without my permission.

I encourage you to look up the definition of "trojan" as pertaining to malware

It is calling customer complaints "tantrums" that makes me actively hate this company and the white knight fanboys who want to defend it. Let me be blunt:

You are not an Evernote employee. Shut up. I have absolutely no interest in your comments.

Absolutely adorable, by the way, that you went back to add a few insults to your original post after I quoted you here. I am not ranting, I am reporting to a company that their software doesn't work properly. I paid for that privilege. If that's pollution to you, don't read it. I didn't ask you for anything, and in fact told you I'm supremely uninterested in your replies.

I am under absolutely zero compulsion to justify anything I do, say, write, or use to you. If you do not have something constructive to add, do as you're told and shut up.

Evernote does not work and installs software without permission. These are facts. Your opinion of them is immaterial.

My my.

Not 100% sure, but I think clipper is the component of EN that enables screen clipping, a critical piece of EN functionality, for me anyway.  Typically the word malicious is attached to malware software, typically malware is not a component of the base product (except maybe for Adobe ;)). not the case here.  So I get your frustration with having something you don't want on your machine but you can just not use clipping and kill it.

But malware seems a a bit dramatic and a mite short of the definition.  As does telling @DTLow to shut up.

Well, as I am not an Evernote employee, certain people are going to ignore my comments. However, the link that is provided runs some kind of script that I did not request (I am perfectly capable of typing my own search terms into my choice of search engine - not G*****), so stop that already. The results do show that Trojan is software that is installed for a malicious (hence malware) purpose. The original Trojan horse was designed to allow the taking over of a city-state by force. Again, for purposes against the desires of that city-state. Evernote is not trying to take over your computer for malicious purposes. So grow up!

If you are opposed to any software being installed without your permission, I am surprised that you are still using a computer, especially one with an OS originating in Washington state. That OS installs a lot of software that I don't want or need. In some cases it is impossible to install. Sometimes you have to take a little bad to get a lot of good in software. No software developer is going to ask permission to install each element of their offering. Most users would get frustrated and abandon the installation. Most users of Evernote who care enough to know about the Clipper do like it. Those who don't want it figure out they can disable it from loading - end of story. There are other apps that have similar functions to much of Evernote - if you dislike the Clipper so much, go and play in their sandbox for a while.

I do not appreciate Evernote fanboys telling me to grow up. You know that thing you do where you make noise? Stop doing it. I didn't ask your opinion of my opinion, and I believe I made it fairly clear that I don't really care what you have to say. I am not required to justify ANYTHING I do with my computer to you, not the software I choose to run or the operations I decide to perform or even the links I use to make a point.

Nor do I appreciate intellectually dishonest debate tactics like changing the subject. We are not discussing the fact that I have a computer, or that I choose to trust some software developers and not others. We are discussing ONLY that I declined to install a piece of software and then found that software running on my system ANYWAY

I realize that you are emotionally invested in Evernote to the point that any insult to the software cuts you on a deeply personal level. That's your problem. When YOU open YOUR wallet and purchase hardware for me, you can f*ing tell me what to run on it and how happy I'm allowed to be. Until that moment, I will continue to consider ANY software running without my permission to be malicious. I have no way of knowing WHAT that particular piece of code is doing. It's not like Evernote hasn't established a six year history of lying to the users and punting out broken code. I don't want clipper on my system. Period. End comm. You don't need to know why and I have no intention of telling you because it is none of your business.

So no, I'm not going to "grow up" and I'm not "throwing a tantrum", which is why I told @DTLow to stuff it. I'm telling you the same thing. You're not an Evernote employee, so your reply is largely irrelevant.

@DTLow was told to shut up because I don't appreciate my legitimate complaints and comments about nonfunctional for-profit software I have paid for being trivialized as "rantings" and "tantrums" and (my favorite) "polution" [sic].

If it's not already clear, fifteen minutes perusal of these forums clearly indicates that users are getting fed up with broken base functions while new features and icon designs are being constantly rolled out. We're not throwing tantrums and we're not being childish. We have invested time, effort, and in some cases money into this product and the development staff is ignoring us. We have the right to be angry. And if you want to see us turn incandescent then tell us to "grow up" or that we are "ranting." I won't suffer that ***** from the employee of a company I pay money to, I'm certainly not going to accept it from another customer who just can't handle seeing his favorite software disparaged!

If clipper, as you say, is a part of the base functionality of the software, and if it is necessary to run said software, that is something the development team needs to confirm. However, when I checked the software titles online, it seems to be the same as the Web Clipper, which I specifically chose not to install. If that is the case then I am wrong and I will admit it.

But I am not wrong to tell someone who is trying to silence my aggravation to shut up. I don't need anyone's permission to post on a public forum, nor will I ask for it. If Evernote really intends to fix these problems they have caused then they are going to have to accept the fact that longterm users are probably several miles past pissed off and still accelerating by this time.

Now, you, @csihilling, have always tried to answer my questions and take my aggravation seriously. I appreciate that, and I hope I've made my gratitude as clear to you as I've made my frustration with Evernote clear to them. You, I will continue to speak respectfully to, because you give that to me as well. Thank you.

It would be nice if a developer would confirm its exact purpose.  I am not sure if it is required for the screen capture functionality or not frankly.  If it is there to support browser clipping only then you can permanently disable by setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Evernote/Evernote/StartEvernoteClipper to 0.  FYI, whenever I view it in task manager it isn't eating any resources.

You are welcome.  Everyone has a right to express their opinions, the more fact based the better.  However, sometimes someone may get in one's grill, appropriately or otherwise.  This is a user helping user forum, so the less we have folks projecting their views on others and the resultant flaming the better, in my view.  The more of this is how it works, these are some workarounds. this is where the trouble lies the better, less of the you are a dumba$$ for doing it that way.  That and if someone really doesn't like it, maybe it is time to move on to something else.  <end of sermon>  ;)

i'm neither a windows user nor an employee, so please feel free to ignore my comments, but this is a user forum, so i'd like to encourage communication among users. if you only want to talk to employees, a support ticket would probably be best.

my understanding is that some browsers don't support plugins (explorer?), so the clipper comes bundled with the app. there isn't anything malicious about it. in gene

I think my issue is that, dang it, I want to like it. It's like seeing your perfect girl marry your best friend. Evernote, as claimed, is exactly what I want and need!

The problem is... I don't want or need some things, and some of the things I do want and need are broken while they put their effort and time into trying to roll out the stuff I don't want.

I disabled the clipper in startup and have noticed no loss of functionality. It doesn't seem to be doing anything, so I'll temper my irritation for the moment.

No need to ignore you, GM. You make valid points. My issue was that, if you dig through the forums (and you have, we've spoken before), any time someone posts an issue here, ninety-nine knuckleheads tell him why he is the problem instead of accepting that he has a valid complaint.

I am still not happy with the fact that this was installed on my system and set to run at startup without my permission. I will decide what gets to run on my computer. I'm already peeved because Win10 has some asinine Xbox thing I can't delete, and Acer adds their own junk that has to be removed. I don't want anything else snuck into my system. (Especially because this is a 2-in-1 tablet, and those aren't terribly robust with processor or memory. I don't want anything clogging this. I need it for work.)

Every piece of bloatware is pre-installed "for user convenience." That includes about 3/4 of the apps on my phone.

As for support tickets... let me be blunt. Evernote has a truly dismal track record of support responses. I stopped bothering with those some time ago. Part of the reason I post to the forums is that I noticed that when I did so, several other people would generally reply, "Hey, yeah, I have that problem, too!" When a thread gets too big to ignore, it (sometimes) finally gets noticed by the developers.

Anyway, I welcome your replies and comments.

Thank you. However, I see that, as per usual, users have been politely asking for a way to toggle this off without editing the registry since the year of our lord 2011!

How about you not install it at all unless the user makes the decision he wants to run Clipper? This nonsense of "We're just gonna sneak that onto your computer, stick it in the startup folder, no less, and then... you know... it'll make it more convenient if you ever decide that maybe you want it," is intrusive at best and unethical no matter how you slice it.
