How to make reminders more prominent (like alarms in iOS) on Android...the simplest way possible

I love using reminders, but I'd like them to be more prominent or be notified about them somehow. I see that (and remember from my iOS days) that you can set alarms within Evernote so that they show through the lock screen. I'd be happy with something that shows up as a typical Android notification at least, but the bigger the better. 

One option people seem to be to sync Evernote with Sunrise calendar. Other methods tried? Preferred? I don't want to get stuck in a loop of trial and error, etc. 

I looked a bit online and in the forum but couldn't find a good recommendation (other than to use Sunrise or one of the thousand other calendar apps).
