(Archived) Couple of "Beta" Questions ...

Recommended Posts

On the EN web based portion, are you planning on making it a secure site?

On a side note, is the link between the EN client and the EN Web encrypted also?

Is there going to be a database backup function on EN 3 like there is on 2.2? Mainly for the people who do not use it on the web and for those of us who always want an extra backup :)

I know it's in beta and if I'm "jumping the gun" sorry I will shush then. Just curious as I dig through things ....

All good questions!

On the EN web based portion, are you planning on making it a secure site?

It's already secure in a sense that you need to be logged in to see your private notes. And all your notes are private, unless you specifically put them in a public notebook (Notebook -> Actions -> Settings -> [x] Publish). Also, private notes are not crawled by search engines like Google and Yahoo.

On a side note, is the link between the EN client and the EN Web encrypted also?

At this time only the account login information is encrypted - user name and password are sent over HTTPS.

But it's an important question for us, so let's do a little poll here: How valuable would be an option to encrypt all your EN/Web pages? Related question - do you currently use encrypted links to send and receive your email?

We don't do local backup ourselves anymore - there are many solutions for doing this at the system level, and we decided not to re-invent the wheel. We moved the Evernote .exb database files into "My Documents" directory to make it easier for you to perform backup using the same tools you use to backup your documents, email database files, etc.

Of cause all your server data is regularly backed up in our data center.

Please keep digging!

I personally think this would be a valuable option myself. I use EN 2.2 for a lot of different information, some personal and others just overall valuable (to me at least) and would not want it to get out. Privacy and security are important for me and my data, especially once it hits the web. Now I don't use encrypted links to send my mail, but then again, I normally don't put anything in mail that I would worry about, when I do, I encrypt it :D Maybe this can be one of the "Pro" or "Paid" options?

I saw that, works for me, NTBackup, Syncback, etc will all work fine. Just wanted to know where things stand since it was an earlier feature.

Thanks for the help! More coming, I'm making a list and checking it multiple times

I would personally ONLY use Evernote Web (or desktop with online sync) if the line is encrypted.

While doing a simple packet sniff during an Evernote online session, I was easily able to pickup data that I would not want co-workers or strangers to see.

As web security seems to be a more important issue day by day, this must be something that should be considered.

I concur. At this time I consider the EverNote Web (thus, today, all of EverNote Lite) to be completely public and insecure. That is OK, I have lots of applications for such (e.g. public notebooks to save me from having to repeatedly send out e-mails to many requesters). But for personal data and client data, I'm not using it; it is still early Beta code, so I'm not at all upset.

I think an option to encrypt is necessary. Like marcclarke I regularly work under NDAs. Almost all of them prohibit non-secure transmission and storage, and a few even specify no off-site storage via 3rd part services. One of them even specifies a weekly virus scan of our project engineer's laptop by the customer's IT department. I encrypt emails when required.

Just for fun I did try connecting to the EverNote 3 Beta "preview" web site using the secure "https://" previx on the URL (note the trailing "s" on the "https"). No joy. The connection was established as the non-secure "http://" type (no trailing "s"). Darn. I didn't think it would work, but I thought it was worth a try.

Yes, only the account login information is sent over secure HTTPS link.

(For those who are curious about this kind of things: If you look at the source of http://preview.evernote.com/Login.action page you can see https://preview.evernote.com/Login.action)
