Newbie with questions on upload limits

Recommended Posts

I don't even know where to start.

1. What is my upload limit vs. what I see in account info? Evernote says I used up my limit but the Account info says 10%. Evernote gave me another 5G but it doesn't show up in Account info.

2. I never got a message that I had exceeded my limit, is that normal?

3. What happens when I exceed my limit, are things stored on my PC until I can upload again?

4. I set up clipping so that it would go to a local box. I wanted to confirm that and when I go to the clipping options the box that shows where my clips should go is blank and I can't enter anything into that box.

5. I have clipping set up to go to Evernote desktop, does it go directly there or does it go up to Evernote cloud and then back to the desktop. I ask this as I have limited internet, with a 5g usage cap each month.

6. Why is there an upload limit?

7. Are local folders truly local? No internet connection required?

8. I can't look at any of the Evernote videos as I don't have enough bandwidth nor enough Gs to view them.

9. I just need some hand holding for a while, thanks.

Your upload limit / quota is the maximum amount you are permitted to upload to the server in one month.  New and changed notes affect the figure,  deletions do not.  Your usage can show differently on various devices.  The accurate figure is shown on your 'my account' page in Settings via Evernote.com.  Notes saved to Local Notebooks don't affect the quota.

How on earth did Evernote 'give' you another 5GB?  That's,  er,  unusual.

2. I never got a message that I had exceeded my limit, is that normal?

Yes.  You're expected to keep track of your own usage and save notes to a local notebook if you get close - or upgrade (even temporarily) to another subscription level if this is just a temporary blip.

3. What happens when I exceed my limit, are things stored on my PC until I can upload again?

It's a limit.  If you exceed it,  bad things can happen to your data.  If you still have the notes you clipped,  that's fine.  If you don't,  they're probably gone for good.

4. I set up clipping so that it would go to a local box. I wanted to confirm that and when I go to the clipping options the box that shows where my clips should go is blank and I can't enter anything into that box.

Where did you set these clipping options?  It is possible to clip to a local notebook on the single device to which that notebook has been saved.  To check whether clips are going there,  open the notebook to see what it contains.

5. I have clipping set up to go to Evernote desktop, does it go directly there or does it go up to Evernote cloud and then back to the desktop. I ask this as I have limited internet, with a 5g usage cap each month.

If you clip from the desktop,  the notes will be saved directly there and then (unless you saved to a Local Notebook) they'll be uploaded (synced) to the server.  If you clip from anywhere else and your upload limit has been exceeded,  the clips will be sent to the server,  but will not be saved or forwarded to the desktop.

6. Why is there an upload limit?

To avoid Evernote's servers being used as a dumping ground for backups,  music tracks,  films and other large files - and so they have something to offer when you decide to upgrade.

7. Are local folders truly local? No internet connection required?

A local notebook (not a folder) exists only on the device on which it has been created.  That device needs permanent storage - a hard drive - to hold the notebook.  Local notebooks aren't available on tablets or phones.  You can only access items in it from the host device.  It is not backed up in any way unless you do so (which is strongly recommended).

8. I can't look at any of the Evernote videos as I don't have enough bandwidth nor enough Gs to view them.

If your internet connection is that limited,  Evernote may not be an ideal app for you.

9. I just need some hand holding for a while, thanks.

She just gave it to me. I have been looking at my usage on my Evernote Program, not the web version. Totally different number.

2. I never got a message that I had exceeded my limit, is that normal?

Yes.  You're expected to keep track of your own usage and save notes to a local notebook if you get close - or upgrade (even temporarily) to another subscription level if this is just a temporary blip.

I had been managing it, just at the wrong place.

3. What happens when I exceed my limit, are things stored on my PC until I can upload again?

Nasty, a message would be nice.

4. I set up clipping so that it would go to a local box. I wanted to confirm that and when I go to the clipping options the box that shows where my clips should go is blank and I can't enter anything into that box.

I set up the clipping on my PC. But it always clips to my last used notebook, doesn't let me select a notebook. The options are part of the clipping pgm.

5. I have clipping set up to go to Evernote desktop, does it go directly there or does it go up to Evernote cloud and then back to the desktop. I ask this as I have limited internet, with a 5g usage cap each month.

I am getting the feeling I need to make 2 copies of anything I do. One for Evernote and one as backup.

6. Why is there an upload limit?

To avoid Evernote's servers being used as a dumping ground for backups,  music tracks,  films and other large files - and so they have something to offer when you decide to upgrade.

Is there a way to do an initial mass load. I have 2000 recipes and 4000 travel articles that I want to upload.

When I look at Evernote on my Droid phone it has a locals category. I haven't tried my phone yet, having enough of an adventure with the PC. Not ready to branch out.

8. I can't look at any of the Evernote videos as I don't have enough bandwidth nor enough Gs to view them.

It is not that it is limited but I have to pay for everything I use and am on a 5G plan. I can always go to Starbucks or the library. I want to be in control when something uses my internet.

9. I just need some hand holding for a while, thanks.

I go look but so far I have found there held doesn't seem to answer my questions.

Thanks for everything

Hmmn - "she"?

Agreed - I've complained about this too;  some 'soft landings' for when users step over the limit,  or at least a 'you're getting close' warning.

4. I set up clipping so that it would go to a local box. I wanted to confirm that and when I go to the clipping options the box that shows where my clips should go is blank and I can't enter anything into that box.

If this is the browser clipper,  you should have some options somewhere...

Shouldn't be necessary if you stay within the limits - the web server always has the final word;  see online at Evernote.com

You could subscribe to a Premium account for the first month - that has a very high upload limit;  or you could 'upload' to a Local Notebook and move the data across to a synced notebook (if you want to) as and when your limit allows.

7. Are local folders truly local? No internet connection required?

Your phone can store notes - subject to what physical storage you have available;  it cannot support a Local Notebook.

8. I can't look at any of the Evernote videos as I don't have enough bandwidth nor enough Gs to view them.

Try searching for terms like 'Local Notebook' - anything you;re not sure of - it will give you access to more information on that topic.

Thanks for everything

No problem:  good luck!

"She" is Customer Service. I didn't even ask, just upped my limit by 5G.

I have a premium account now with the thought in mind to upload and then switch back. I did not realize I was using up my upload limit since I was looking at the wrong report. Evernote should either remove the report from the PC version or have the correct numbers in it.

A lot of this seems "seat of the pants". Still like the concept but Evernote needs maturing, especially since it is a subscription service.

.

Clipping: I don't think the clipping options work. I used the option to always put in a tag and it doesn't do it. Doesn't allow you to select which folder either. That is 2 options that aren't working. I can live with this but frustrating again.

If you have a premium account,  your monthly limit is now 10GB and I haven't even come close to that over some years - you should be OK for your uploads.

The clipping options seem to work for me - maybe this is just a familiarity thing;  as you use the product you will become more relaxed and familiar with it's eccentricities...  :)
