Request: Implement silent updates

I appreciate the aggressive release schedule, but almost every day I'm having to click through install popups and UAC confirmations in order to update Evernote, and it's getting to be painfully intrusive.

Would it be possible to allow Evernote to update silently, or automatically download updates, and apply them silently the next time Evernote is started, like with Firefox and Chrome?

I use Evernote Windows and Chrome

My 4 most recent upgrades were spread out over 206 days

  • September 10 - version 5.9.1.8742 (276742) Public
  • July 10 - version 5.8.13.8152 (276152) Public
  • April 4 - version 5.8.5.7193 (275193) GA
  • February 16 - version 5.8.3.6507 (274507) Public
That works out to an average of one upgrade every two months.

Yeah - I'm not exactly updating my installation every day - and the 'silent' option would have to be exactly that - an option - for those people who have decided they don't want to have anything to do with the new versions either 1) because a favourite feature has changed in the latest version,  or 2) they want the bugs worked out before they risk the installation.  Something for Evernote to look at anyway...

Odd, I've been getting update requests every few days. Maybe there's an issue with my installation - though it does seem to be up to date.

Do you have beta updates turned on?  There are many more beta updates than the general release updates.

I did think about that, but nope, that's never been ticked!

Well the latest actual update (excluding betas) was issued over a month ago,  and they're coming out at the rate of roughly one a month - except for June which had about three,  probably bug fixes or patches for something.  Here's a (more or less complete) list of issue dates (yyyymmdd) with links to the release post.  I'd suggest you check your current version number (Evernote > Help > About) and then again after the next time you update.  If the number doesn't change,  your system is throwing up false alerts for new versions.  It would be worth uninstalling and downloading the current version from Evernote.com for a clean reinstall.

Making a note here for next update: Currently on 5.8.13.8152 (276152) Public

Edit: Which appears to be a few versions behind, according to your list. Maybe the update installer wasn't installing properly, which might explain why it was constantly trying to update. I'll try uninstalling completely, clearing out any leftover files, and reinstalling.

Double edit: Uninstalled and reinstalled only for me as a user: Hopefully it'll mean any future updates don't need the UAC popup for admin privileges, at least. Now on 5.9.1.8742 (276742) Public
