download on Windows Vista, "cannot connect"

  I just downloaded Evernote onto my older Vista laptop via Chrome. Installation appeared to be successful.

  However, before I could 'open' Evernote it wanted to connect so, I assume, I could 'sign in'.  I keep getting a "could not connect to server" message saying "You need to be online to register...".

  I am online to post this message and was able to download the file

             Evernote_5.8.13.8152.exe

 

so I don't understand what I must do.

 I've successfully installed Evernote on two Windows 7 laptops and an iPad without difficulty.

  Can anyone advise?
